Description: When Annamarie “Jayla Howard is convinced to come work at a Scottish castle by her younger brother, she never dreams she’ll become embroiled in a tumultuous affair with its sexy-but-arrogant owner, Baron Alec Cavanaugh.
The Good: This book is a serious page-turner. The only reason I didn’t read it in two sittings was because I had to actually do my dayjob which I consequentially began to resent for keeping me from further reading. If you like soap opera and yelling, “Oh no, he didn’t! at your books (as I do), then you will love TAMING THE SCOTSMAN. It has well-constructed conflict, a compelling alpha male who loves soul music, really wonderful cultural details about Scotland, and somehow Ms. Mynx manages to keep things sexy even in between the actual sexing. I love the twist on the “taming of the shrew especially since this alpha male really, really, really needs taming. You’ll hopefully have fun getting mad at him before getting won over by him again and again. Also, the book is a more-than-good length for it’s price.
The Bad: Jayla as a character was a bit uneven, at times caving in when perhaps the reader would not. This will make her feel a little inconsistent and weak to some readers. Ms. Mynx sets up quite a few clocks, which become hard to track and don’t pay off. There are a few ill-advised italicized dream and memory passages that not only stopped the story’s momentum, but also felt completely unneeded. And the ending felt a bit rushed, not as firm as a reader might want.
The Naughty: Steamy verging on erotic. Sex on a train. Delicious blackmail.
Editing issues: Quite a few typos (over 10). Word misusage. Dialogue weirdly formatted on Kindle.
Quite an ENTERTAINING page-turner... Jayla and Alec complement each other PERFECTLY…Jayla’s SWEET, quiet and dignified innocence soothes Alec’s TROUBLED heart and the bullying beast that rears its UGLY head often...their opposite personalities DEFINITELY bring out the BEST in one another…although it’s not an easy road to love for this extremely PASSIONATE couple...it’s a WORTHWHILE journey with quite a few INTENSE and STEAMY encounters...however, that being said I still think the ending is a bit too RUSHED!
I am in love with a Scotsman! This book is perfect from beginning to end I would not change a thing. The romance between Jayla and Alec was wonderful I has everything you would want to read about. The passion,The anger , it was funny at times and oh so sweet.Sienna Mynx Has done it again this book have you smiling and on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. In the end you feel like I did this book is perfection .
Very good writing, character believability and interacting, and very much a page turner. I enjoyed this story quite a lot. There is a lot that happens in this book, and it keeps you interested the whole time.
This was my second book by the author and my first full length read by the author. I really enjoyed the read. Even though I have read a lot of interracial romance, paranormal or contemporary, a Scottish guy was different, good different. I look forward to more books by the author.
Edward has been living in England for the past year and a half. While home visiting his sister Jayla, he let's her know of an opportunity with a job, where the benefits were great . The only thing is, it's in Scotland, at the Cavanaugh ski restort. The only problem is Edward told them he was married and needs his sister to pose as his wife to get the job. A bit reluctant, Jayla agrees and moves to Scotland for 6 months to help her brother with a lie. Traveling to Scotland by herself, Jayla met Alec and spends one night with him not knowing who he really is. Alec is the owner of the Cavanaugh ski resort and Edward's boss. After his night with Jayla, he is shock to discover who Jayla really is.
I liked the story and the read. With the title and setting of the story, I was really interested to see what a sistah is going to do in Scotland and see how she will tame a Scottish. (hehehe). After Alec discovered that Jayla was married, the interaction became interesting between both characters. Alec being angry at the whole situation, hiredJayla to be his personal assistant, that was so wrong on so many levels. But made for an interesting and entertaining read. After reading more, there were more plots and twist of deceptions between the two. The beginning was ok for me but once the drama started my eyes were clued, and of course that also includes a trifling ex in the mix. Though to warn you, out of anger Alec could be harsh with his words at times.
I kept laughing to myself when they were at Alec's mother's cottage. Lol he was a dork in those scenes with the music playing and trying to sing with his Scottish accent the old R&B songs. But, he was a sexy dork when things steamed up. I did thought it was weird to end the story like that and to begin an Epilogue like that, but stilled loved it. Love the cover.
Overall, I liked the story. It was your typical romance novel. The hero was brutish, damaged, but had some qualities that were redeeming. The heroine, who always seems to be so much younger than the hero, is sweet and innocent and pure. Her personality “tames him and they live..
I guess happily ever?
I felt the epilogue really should’ve been chapter 16 with the epilogue giving some kind of update on the couple down the road. The way the epilogue ended felt really abrupt and their story slightly open. I’m not sure if Mynx is planning a sequel to this book, but I doubt it, and therefore I needed a bit more closure.
Unfortunately, this book suffered from lack of or bad editing. There were a lot of missing commas, which distracted me from the reading a bit. With Jayla being 24, her brother would be 21 (since their 2-3 years apart), wouldn’t he be a bit too young to be headed-hunted and then running a major vacation resort? I could see it if Edward was in his upper 20s and Jayla just shy of 30. And since Alec was 38, I really needed Jayla’s age to come up a bit. Or the Baron’s to come down, since he didn’t come off as old as he was.
Back to Edward. He had some nerve. Every time he fixed his mouth to say something I wanted to jump in this book and punch him in the face. I’m not here for black men (real or fictional) shitting on black women, ESPECIALLY the ones that raised them. He was the epitome of “ain’t shit.
I liked that the “evil white woman character wasn’t all that evil. I thought she’d play the typical role that evil white women play in interracial romance where the heroine and the EWW catfight between each other over the hero. She did cause some drama between the two leads, but it wasn’t crazy over the top.
I liked how the topic of race was brought up in both serious and humorous ways. We weren’t bashed over the head with it, but it wasn’t swept under a rug.
The sex scenes were good, pretty decent. They seemed to be in missionary all the time, so sex-position-diversity would’ve been great. But I felt the passion between the leads and wished I was a fly on their wall.
Jayla has a lot on her proverbial plate with being everything to her younger brother. Things are about to change when said brother has a chance of a life tie to offer his big sister. Accepting 'baby boys' proposition, Jayla finds herself in a foreign country and with a strage man in her room. This chance encounter turns into a desire she has never known. Alec Cavannaugh has a history with woman always wanting something from him. So what is he to think when he finds out that Jayla is to be his new assistant. Suspicious rise and truth and fiction begin to mix but not in a good way.
Jayla certainly experiences a ride of a life time.
***3 years later and I still love this tangled read between Jayla and the Baron.
The author did a great job with the Scottish accent. I loved the relationship between the hero and the heroine. What I didn't like was the ending. It was rushed and felt incomplete.
I enjoyed reading this book and I liked the premise, though earlier reviews state that Edward and Jayla posed as a married couple. In the version I just read Jayla was Edward's personal choice as an executive assistant to work with him in Scotland. He asked her to hide the fact that they were brother and sister from Baron Alec Cavanaugh. SIDE NOTE: The guy on the cover art looks like Patrick Swayze.
After being introduced to Anne Marie known to him as Jayla, the Baron immediately suspects they are spies hired by his arch enemy. At times, Alec was a crude and cruel alpha male towards Jayla and the use of the word Whore is always a no-no to describe women. As times goes on Jayla's warmth & naivete/innocence helps to melt his harden heart and most of his defenses. I loved Alec's Soul Music fixation and I really liked the scene where he sung badly and later he made her sing and they danced together -- very vivid and easy to imagine. I also liked the sex game he convinced her to play and I laughed that Jayla thought she ever had a chance of winning.
The conflict was major (plus Jayla could use a review of the birds & the bees), but the lie she told him was heinous and almost unforgivable. After the lie he still came back to see her because what he found out didn't matter to him and that's when he redeemed himself in my eyes. Isn't that when you know you truly love someone? When what you thought you couldn't live without -- you can and you put their well-being and happiness before your own.
Learning about Scottish foods and treats was an added bonus -- I love it when I can learn something new. So despite some punctuation, grammar, spelling and incorrect word usage -- this was forgivable to me, but not the ending of this book. As many have said, it seem very rushed and ended abruptly and left readers hanging, which is not cool at all. It's the "sizzle" without the steak.
Steamy parts were steamy. Her writing was fine, but I think Ms. Mynx would benefit from finding a better copy editor, especially one who benefits greatly in knowing the difference between your and you're. Nothing more jarring than reading an emotional moment and having your brain go, "Shouldn't that be you're?!" It happened a couple of times in the book. I'm a firm believer in writing teaching people how to spell correctly and teaching them the difference in words that sound the same but have different meanings.
That said, I found her hero well rounded and definitely damaged. I felt she played up a bit much on the Scottish thing. As a girl who has married a Scotsman as well as having lived in Scotland, some of the phrasings and words were used to live up to the stereotypes of what Americans thought Scottish people should sound like. It's not a criticism, merely an observation.
Also, when I started the book, I had flashbacks to an old Harlequin Presents with the same theme - sister poses as brother's wife in order for him to procure and secure a job in Scotland. I can't recall the name of the book or the author, but I'm sure it will come to me.
I look forward to reading more of Ms Mynx's work, providing she has a new copy editor who can spell and knows basic third grade grammar. (Sorry, don't mean to sound so rude there, but it's true!)
Another gr8 read from Sienna Mynx. This book had such a different vibe and it was really refreshing. The whole Scottish man, and setting was really creative. I enjoyed reading about all the different foods, and actually found myself googling a lot of the terms Alec was saying to understand the meanings which was something different but nice at the same time. From page one to Jayla and Alec's first love scene which was very early on Jayla really surprised me. I had her pegged all wrong and in a good way. The steam factor was off the charts throughout the book. Although Jayla and Alec had a physical connection, their emotional connection could really be felt as well. Another truly enjoyable read.
Quite enjoyable. Jay and Alec were a perfect match for each other. She had quiet dignity, he with a heart hidden under hurt and bluster brought out the best in each other. The road to love was not easily found, but burned brightly once reached. And for those that need it, the steamy parts were steamy!
Lots of melodrama but I enjoyed it all the same. The hero is difficult but redeeming the heroine is to innocent and sweet for her good. In a romance novel they make for the perfect unlikely match. I couldn't put it down. Ms Mynx is a good writer and though there is some predictability she mixes things up enough to keep you reading on until the very last page.
Book Description: A chance encounter turns one night of abandonment into uncharted passion. Jayla needs a change. Tired of a life without choices she intends to make one. When her brother presents a chance for adventure she's hesitant at first over the deception they would need to pull off to achieve it. What harm could a little white lie do? Plenty. Alec Cavanaugh rather blame conspiracy for the passionate night he shares with his new employee. Afterall, he's had plenty of women scam him for his heart to gain access to his riches. And this doe-eyed caramel beauty is no exception. Or is she? His quest for the truth behind her lies becomes an obsession for him. He devises a plan to get even. But in doing so he only drives the woman of his desires further from his heart. Can these two fated lovers overcome a misunderstanding? Or are they doomed from the start?
Main Characters: Annemarie “Jayla Daniels my feelings were mixed about this character. There were times that she seemed a little bit too naïve about things, but then at times she could stand her ground with Alec and her brother and it made me want to say “You go Girl. But, most of the time it just seemed that she was a young woman that did not get the opportunity to really spread her wings because she was too busy thinking that she wasn’t quite worthy enough and catering to her brother.
Alec Cavanaugh now here was an “Alpha man. He had such a strong personality at times that made me want to hit him in the head. There were times in his treatment of Jayla that made me even want to scream. But when he showed that caring and loving side (and believe me there was a lot of loving going on! LOL) it made me forget all of his mistakes. Especially when he was trying to sing the “soul music with his Scottish accent (I could almost hear it in my head!).
Secondary Character: The only secondary character that really made me want to hurt somebody was Jayla’s brother Edward. He was one scheming and selfish person. To think that he cared that little for his sister that he would get her caught up in his mess, so that he could be on top was just cruel, in my opinion (you need to read it to understand what I mean).
The storyline of this book was not your typical he’s white, she’s black and we must fight to stay together. It focused more on the people and the social status, and race (color) was definitely secondary. The story flowed well, and I really truly enjoyed it. Now the sex scenes were hot! Hot! Hot! I have read several of Sienna Mynx’s books and I always enjoy the read.
I don't remember the last time a book had me feeling like going over the deep end. I knew Alec was going to be controlling and domineering, but I still was not prepared for the way he treated Jayla. Well I guess I could say people in general he was the biggest jerk that I have had the displeasure of reading about in a long while. Jayla really needed to get some backbone.
All that being said I ended up liking the story anyway. Once I felt that I got to know him. They were all lying and keeping secrets, but out of the all Jayla was the most honest, but she was far from innocent.
I think more than anyone though I was the most upset with Edward, because this is the sister who took care of him and made it so that he could have the life he wanted by sacrificing everything for him. His behavior was worse than anything that Alec did because Alec didn't really know her and once he did he treated her better, but Edward has known her his entire life and he still treated her in the most despicable way.
I have to say that some of the things that were done and said were shocking to me, but overall the story was pretty good. I was glad anytime I say Jayla stand up for herself. I just wish she would have done it more often.
This was my first book read by this author and I must admit she is a good writer. The concept of the story drew me in so I just had to read it and I completely forgot that this was a free read. Those are the only reasons I have given this story 4 stars. It could have been a great story but I thought she could have take any other route then the sexy Scottish Baron verbally abusing our heroine. It was to a point were the story was just uncomfortable. He didn't just abuse her but had a total lack of respect for women. Our lovely heroine was protrayed as having such little respect for herself that she not only kept coming back for his spontanous verbal attacks but could convince herself to be physical with him as well. In my opinion she just gave women a bad name. No self respecting woman would ever look at a man let alone allow him to touch her again after he said the horrible things that he did. The dumb female wasn't even using protection. I mean I could go on and on. I just say that it's sad because it could have been a great book. But sadly she ruined with a tale of what kind of guy you should never date. Either way its a decent quick read.
This really was a pretty good IR novel. It took a bit for me to get into because Alec really does start out as a jerk. The initial coupling of him and Jayla I didn't care for at all. Yes, it was mutual, but it didn't really start that way. It was out of character for Jayla and she didn't start out wanting anything even if she did feel attracted to him. It was until he poured a couple glasses of wine in her and pushed her kind of hard before he gave in. Not very gentlemanly. And then when he is upset because he thinks she is married, he because a major jerk. So for the first part of the book, it is Jayla that keeps you interested in keeping with it. She is a wonderful, compassionate, and strong character. Then, finally, when Alec comes around and starts acting more like real man, that's when it picks up and I started to enjoy the novel. It's hard to find a good IR novel that is of a descent length and has good character development. As such, I'll add my little bell curve and push this review up to a 4 start when compared to the IR Genre.
I had great hopes for this book. I knew by the fifth page, things were going to end poorly.
My first major issue was the heroine. It's my pet peeve to ensure whiny, weak lead female characters. Jayla was all over the place. One moment she's meek. The next she's assertive. One moment, she's crying. The next she's "I am woman. Hear me roar."
I'm all for owning your sexuality, but she gave it up awfully quick.
Let me not forget about the hero. He was way too liberal with the word "whore." A man only has once to call me that name. Someone's going to jail or hell.... I tried to like him, but Alec came across as a childlike little brat.
I just finished the book and I must say it is probably my favorite of Sienna's so far. (I'm working on reading everything she has written xD). I loved Jayla and how she wasn't the typical female lead character. I loved how much she loved Alec, despite how cruel he was to her. I love Alec's realization of his affection towards Jayla. I also really liked that he wasn't as possessive as many of the typical male characters Sienna pens. I just love it so much. I couldn't put it down. I disliked the ending, only because I wanted to know what would happen after they reconciled. But I guess that's the beauty of ambiguity.
I felt that I should put 3, but it was more than that so I graded up. Alec was a complete Butt to Jada. How horrible he was almost seemed unreal, but then women let men talk to them like that all the time and fall for the losers. It's the transformation that he makes because of her, and the changes he makes in her that made the story heartfelt. I can see the ending being extended a little more before cutting to the epilogue. I've read a short and this book by Ms. Mynx and that seems to be her style which I don't really care for, but it was good overall.
Alec was a bastard. Ooooo I wanted to strangle him at times :D.... Ok, ok. It was a great read. I really enjoyed it. He was that way only because people in his life hurt him. Jayla broke him down, even though he was mean to her at times, but he did change... Eventually. Edward used her, but when he said he wanted his Jayla back, I really felt for him. I wish we could seen more in the end but all in all, great story.
Now I know the name of the Scottish dance. Ceilidh.
