Smith’s bestselling Stefan’s Diaries series, which reveals the backstory of brothers Stefan and Damon from The Vampire Diaries series. This paperback features cover artwork from the hit CW TV series The Vampire Diaries , starring Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder. Samuel has already ruined Stefan’s chances at a normal life, and now he’s framing Damon for the Jack the Ripper murders, too. With the help of Cora, a human girl, Stefan and Damon track Samuel from the glittering ballrooms of London to the city’s asylum, which Samuel uses for his own nefarious purposes. However, while finding Samuel is easy, Damon and Stefan quickly learn that stopping him may be nearly impossible. Full of dark shadows and surprising twists, the fifth book in the New York Times bestselling Stefan’s Diaries series raises the stakes for the Salvatore brothers as they face new loves, old treacheries, and unimaginable threats. Fans of L. J. Smith’s New York Times bestselling Vampire Diaries series as well as the hit television show won’t be able to put the latest Salvatore adventure down.
Lisa Jane Smith was an American author of young adult fiction best known for her best-selling series The Vampire Diaries, which has been turned into a successful television show. Her books, particularly The Vampire Diaries and Night World, have been in the New York Times Best Seller list and have been nominated for five awards.
This one picks up right where the last book left off and yep.. Stefan is still the most dramatic vampire to ever exist. But at this point we’ve just accepted that and we still love him that way. The story was fun and kept me entertained.
Omg this book was torture. Use a fucking thesaurus ffs. How many times can you use the word hiss??? The writing was terrible and I am so sick of this Jack the Ripper and Samuel shit. No wonder they only wrote one more of these books after this. The first two were great and it just went downhill from there.
:/ I have problems with this series. I love the show but WTF Stefan's Diaries are based on the TV series why did they change things in these books that didn't happen in the tv show? it doesn't make sense if the books are supposed to follow the show.
For the Damon fans Damon plays a bigger part in The Asylum . That was nice! The Salvatore Brothers are working togheters to fight against their mutual enemy.
Other things I liked: Cora! Such an amazing girl. London! The Benefit Ball James, who provides them with his wisdom and products.
I love Damon way more than Stefan, so how could I not love this book. Curious about the way the Serie will end. I hope it will be with the brothers defeting Henry+Samuel and after then both will stay for a while in London.
Yup, I'm done with all the Vampire Diaries books. Even in the ones not written by LJ Smith, the characters are poorly written and the dialogue is droll. I don't even want to read the last of the three London stories--I just don't care enough. And I'm usually a girl who feels obligated to finish any series that I've started.
I thought that this book was definitely better than the previous book. What disappointed me was that Stefan actually isn't Jack the Ripper. Kind of upsetting because I thought Stefan would have this dark side to him. There is still one more book to read so I guess we will see what happens.

This is one of my favourites out of the 5 I’ve read. It’s suspenseful, its characters deep. I really loved it so much. Going to be so sad when I finish the last book in this series!
I hate Elena but I love Nina Dobrev and Katherine, which means, when I look at this cover, I say to myself that this is Katherine and not Elena, or else I’ll dislike the cover. Just a point of view. Anyways, I love all TVD: Stefan’s Diaries covers, for some reason, I’m a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries font style *____*.
The storyline:
I got used to L. J.’s writing style. When reading her books, I embrace myself for a very slow paced beginning, a somehow intriguing middle and a very captivating end. I wish she would change that, but, well, I still love her books!
(p.s: I haven’t read neither The Vampire Diaries nor her new trilogy, The Hunters, books. I’ve heard mostly negative things about them but I’m going to read it anyway because I need to have my own opinion and I also need to read where my favorite TV show came from Smile).
What I loved:
The title perfectly fits the story! The Prologue and the Epilogue are very good. One of the best things about L. J.’s writing style. The non-stop fighting between Damon and Stefan is crazy good. I can see why they act like that now in 2012. They’ve been thru a lot. Cora, the female protagonist, is amazing. I loved everything about her. I liked how every now and then, we get to have a glimpse of Katherine. I really like her character because she’s unique and mysterious. The ending was breathtaking, as usual, and now I’m going to start the sequel immediately! What I disliked:
If there was one thing I would change about the book (all of the books in the series actually), it would be the pacing at first. It always gets boring that I wish I could stop reading it all at once. What keeps me reading is knowing that the best is yet to come. The characters:
Stefan is sweet and nice but too naïve. I used to dislike him before reading his Diaries, but now, I actually respect him. He’s been trying his best at everything but for some reason, he always fails miserably :s.
Damon is the impulsive, seductive and arrogant brother. Sometimes he gets on my nerves, the other times he’s just bad charming. Just imagine Ian Somerhalder reading his sentences and acting him and you’ll know what I mean Winking smile.
Cora is Violet’s sister from the previous book, The Ripper. She is very courageous and amazingly understanding. She kept the Salvatore brothers united and organized. A good friend to them.
Samuel is definitely Klaus <3. I don’t hate him at all, in fact, I’m liking him even more. He’s rich, mysterious, very well positioned, a blond vampire and Katherine’s running from him Does that remind you of anything?! Yep! I’m like 75% sure he’s Klaus.
Henry is Samuel’s younger brother. He’s impulsive and dead at the end of the book, which sparks the anger of Samuel. But it makes me wonder, if Samuel is Klaus, then who is Henry? Could he be the mysteriously dead younger brother?
Violet was human at first, but now she’s a hungry and immoral vampire. She was turned by Samuel and he keeps her around like a pet and she likes it.
James is a new character introduced in this book. He sells witchy stuff to anyone who pays. He helps Damon, Stefan and Cora thru the story and has a very good since of logic.
Favorite quotes:
“May I see? Cora asked, holding out her hand expectantly.
Damon ignored her. “They could have run a better picture of me, at the very least. That illustration doesn’t do me justice at all, he said sulkily as he settled onto the bench next to me and crumpled the paper into a ball. But I could see his hands shaking—the faintest of tremors, so subtle, they would be invisible to the human eye. This wasn’t the confident Damon I knew. --- Chapter 1.
I’d thought we’d have to protect Cora, but it seemed Cora was protecting us. Did this dependence on a human to lead us to safety mean we were worse off than we thought? Or was Cora the good luck charm I’d asked for? Either way, I trusted her. --- Chapter 1.
“Thank you for the etiquette lesson, brother. But I don’t need to go inside. All I need is to speak with Samuel, man to man. Or, should I say, vampire to vampire, Damon explained. --- Chapter 4.
The more steps we took into the basement, the hotter it became. Damon had been wrong. The tunnel wasn’t the closest we could get to hell—the basement of the Magdalene Asylum was. --- Chapter 7.
“Samuel thinks he’s so clever, but we know all of his moves now. And that’s encouraging. My guess is that we’ll kill him and his brat of a brother before the week’s out. And then, brother, the city is ours. Or”—Damon scratched his head, as though he were deep in thought—“the city will be mine. And maybe, if you don’t annoy me, I’ll let you live here, too. --- Chapter 8.
“Really? Damon’s eyes widened. “That’s their blood supply. That’s brilliant, he said.
“It’s awful! I retorted.
“Right. Of course it is. But just think. No hunting, and so many girls available that they don’t feed enough to kill them. I hate to say it, but Samuel knows what he’s doing, Damon said grudgingly. “If they weren’t trying to kill me, I would probably join them.
I grimaced. I knew Damon wasn’t saying it to shock me—he actually would have. --- Chapter 10.
“I’m all in, I said calmly. “And Damon I’m sorry.
Damon nodded. “All right, he said. In Damon’s vocabulary, “all right was as good as “apology accepted. I decided I’d take it. I had to. --- Chapter 17.
Conclusion:
This is definitely a favorite book of mine. It has action, friendship, family, horror and vampires!
If you love the TV show, I really do recommend this one, but you’ll have to start with the first book, Origins, first or you’ll be in the unknown in this one Smile.
From the title, I was not expecting The Asylum to be a home for wayward girls? lol Warning! This one ends in a huge cliffhanger! Plus, we got excerpts from Stefan's Diaries #6: The Compelled AND from The Vampire Diaries: The Hunters Vol. 1: The Phantom (which I've already read). Okay, now that you know that, I have questions about where Stef's Diaries is going. SPOILERY! If (that's a big "if") they manage to just kill off Samuel, how will they ever clear Damon's name of The Jack the Ripper accusations? I had always kind of thought of Stefan as more the "Jack the Ripper" *ahem..Rippah* brother, but they've gone the other way in this series. This book brought the witchy ju-ju element into this story...anyone else wish they'd just mash-up all these books and write ONE series? Looks like Cora may talk Stefan into drinking the people blood again, just so he's strong enough to get his brother back. I think Cora has finally thrown in the towel on her sister, Violet. Oh, well, now to wait for another book!
Another book in the series from the show's creators and based on the mythologies behind The Vampire Diaries's show. As always, a better read even if in a more compact manner, than the original series. Damon, seems a bit flatter in personality than they have been betraying him, and of course more so than the reader really knows from watching the show, but the stories are told through Stefan's pov and echo well to the character's in the show. Good, quick read on a week when the show is on hiatus.
this was a really good book, i loved how the relationship between damon, stefan and cora was worked out, it was well written and interesting and what a cliff hanger at the end
well—this is what i for not being physically able do dnf anything, ever. it's so funny to me that i'm reading “the vampire diaries of all things in the year of our lord and savior 2023, but i had stefan's diaries laying around the house—yes, still unread, after all this time—and way too much time on my hands, today in particular, so i was like—why not? people who know me will know i was, am and always will be—proudly—team stefan. it's undeniable that i should have read these books years ago when i first purchased them and my hyperfixation with the series was at its highest peak, considering that in the meantime i am well over my early twenties and surely not of the appropriate age to be reading them—but i have to say i didn't fully dislike the experience. if anything, it was like coming back home—to a place that no matter what, no matter how much time passes, will always feel familiar and comforting. i felt pretty much the same when, a couple of months ago, i spontaneously decided to watch a couple more episodes of the series.
This is the second book that tells the story of Stefan and Damon fighting against a powerful vampire, Samuel. Of course, his hatred for Damon and Stefan is related to Katherine. Again, the book starts with both being on a train, going back to London. Have to say I was little disappointed that we have to read another book about Samuel. I don't think this story deserves to be prolonged that much. I was used to reading single story per book. I don't care about him and it doesn't make sense why they haven't killed him yet. I know they had a reason but that reason is not good enough for me. I also noticed that the writing is got worse. It's very repetitive. There is page where Katherine and Samuel's names are repeated 5 times each. Easily could have been replaced with him/her. This story is more interesting but the ending was just disappointing.. I don't understand why the writer didn't finish the story and had to end it with cliffhanger in the worst possible way. P.S I am so done with those meaningless tunnel scenes.
I think it was great because the writer of this story really made me feel I was there in the book, and made me feel I was one of the characters in the story, and when I read half of the book, I think it was very creative that the writer said there was a secret space in the London tower where there was a wizard! And some chapters has really dramatic scenes like when Stefan's friend Violet after turned into a vampire, she thinks that it's fine to be a vampire and when before Stefan meant that he wouldn't choose to be a vampire, and Violet was angry, so she took her sister Clare and forced her to be a vampire and locked her up, that was a very good way write about how would you write that scene about, arguing that it was not good when you turned into a vampire to talk about.
This is the sequel to the "Ripper" part of the story. Still on the trail of Samuel Mortimer who is pretending to be Jack the Ripper and thereby frame Damon for his crimes, the Salvatore brothers and Cora who is desperate to find her newly turned sister Violet are determined to finish it once and for all. This includes installing Cora in an asylum for girls as bait to lure out Samuel and his brother Henry when they come to feed on the inmates. In an epic fight to the death who will still be standing at the finale? Who will live to fight another day? Another great instalment of Stefan and Damon's exploits in London.
idk if i'm just used to the kind of formula of these books but i really didn't note any complaints as i usually does, doesn't mean i LOVED it just that it maybe didn't have the same annoying bits the previous ones have
and hey a human woman connected to stefan has (so far) survived that is astounding bc i was sure she was gonna be dead by the end and was gonna be like "at what point is it just straight up misogynistic to write the same story of stefan meets human and gets attached and she dies over and over" but we'll see in the next book huh! samuel and henry are boring villains also but what else is new in tvd tbh
This was a quick read. It was odd in places though. How can Stefan give Damon a 30-second headstart, Damon be running at full vampire speed (and obviously well-fed), and then Stefan who lives on rats and pigeons, catch up to him? How?! And Cora puts vervain in all the girl's drinks at the asylum, so that if the bd guys drinks from them it will hurt him, but doesn't drink any herself? I mean really? Why wouldn't she have taken some too? She left herself completely open to Samuel, and it doesn't make sense that she would do that.
I really love the show , so actually reading the books makes the show more interesting with more details. The Asylum is about an old vampire named Samuel , who wants to take revenge towards them which it would affect their current lives and ruined. Which as you know the Salvatores brothers would not let this happen so they would joined forces to defeat Samuel with the help of a human named Cora.

A totally worthy sequel to "The Ripper", in this story we see Damon, Stefan and Cora going back to London to look for the girl's sister, Violet, recently turned into a vampire. Living in the shadows of an underground tunnel, they have to skip more traps from Samuel and his men, as different feelings awake among the three of them. A tale of love, friendship and sacrifice which brings us breathtaking scenes and all the action The Vampire Diaries have us used to!!!
Another amusing quick read for the series. The story explored more familial relationships with Cora and Violet as the sister parallel to the Salvatore brothers. Damon is selfish and stubborn and Stefan has a hero complex and is also stubborn.
I still haven’t figured out if the Stefan Diaries series is supposed to align with the TV show. There seems to be differences but this could be an attempt at telling the brother’s story before they TV plot line picks up years later.
I much prefer it when Damon and Stefan work together. How else do we get to feel the extent of Damon's sarcastic and flippant seeming attitude while seeing signs that he really does care deep down inside and that it is all a show for self preservation?
This book ended in a cliff hanger! So I must read on!
Bello come sempre, e interessante. Qui le cose si mettono davvero male, anche sul finale. Ma sappiamo tutti anche senza aver visto la serie oppure letti i libri che Damon e Stefan non moriranno di certo nel prossimo libro. Speriamo solo che il loro problema si risolva.
