Splat the Cat - I Can Read

Splat the Cat Takes the Cake

Rate this book
In this Splat the Cat story for beginning readers, Splat loves watching his favorite superhero, Super Cat, on the family TV, but when the set breaks, Splat has no way to watch his cherished cartoon. Splat asks himself, "What would Super Cat do?" and decides to save the day by winning a brand-new TV. The only problem is that winning the TV requires Splat to enter a cake-baking contest . . . which turns out to be a little trickier and stickier than expected. Splat's messy adventures will delight beginning readers.

Splat the Cat Takes the Cake is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it's perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences. This book focuses on the phonics sound ake. Phonics teaches children the relationship between letters and the sounds they make. A child who has mastered these relationships has an excellent foundation for learning to read and spell. According to the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, a child who has learned phonics has a method to recognize familiar words and "decode" unfamiliar ones.

Snore! Truly--how do these books make it through the publishing rig-a-ma-rol. They are colorful and shiny but I found nothing but the most fleeting substance on the inside. My children weren't impressed either.

I'm finding this book quite annoying, but I'm not exactly the target audience. My son thinks it's great and has made me read it every night for the last week.

I read this to Julianna tonight. She gives it 3 stars. Not her favorite of splat the cat books.

SUMMARY: Splat is pretending to be his favorite TV character, Super Cat and causes an accident that breaks the TV. He finds out there is a best cake contest and the prize is a new TV. Does Splat have the winning the cake?

The story wasn't good or bad, but I could see a kid really liking Splat and his pet mouse Seymour (which goes everywhere that Splat goes). I especially liked the part of Splat's unruly tail being a snake that needed to be tamed.

Based on the Splat the Cat character created by Rob Scotton; but this story was written by someone else.

I like the illustrations of Splat the Cat, especially the wildly crooked tail that quivers at times when he is worried or excited; however, sometimes the over done smiles are a little on the scary side. I thought it was unusual that all the other cats in the story had clothes, except for Splat. However, in this story he is wearing a superhero costume for most of the story and when he is cooking he does have on an apron.

An I Can Read Book -- Level 1 -- Defined as Beginning Reader (short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own) It seemed the story was written in words that a beginning reader would be able to read on their own.

I read this title in a hardbound copy of five (5) stories in this sentence; however, THE ADVENTURES OF SPLAT THE CAT was not listed in the Good Reads database; so I have reviewed them individually.

This book is good for those who haven’t been reading for very long. The story is about a cat who loves watching his favorite superhero on television. His parents get upset that it is all he wants to do, so they take the TV away from him. With nothing else to do, he decides to bake a cake for a competition he sees on a flyer while riding his bike. If he wins the competition, the grand prize is a new television that he can watch his favorite superhero on. When his first cake fails, he comes up with a clever new idea that may, or may not, get him to win the contest.

The rating I have given for this book is three stars because although the concept of the book is easy, the way that it is written seemed a little difficult to follow at times.

Only Splat could break his tv watching Super Cat, and then win a new one presented by Super cat, after blowing up a cake in the oven. Such fun Splat has.

OK so I don't even get this book. How was his cake more special than others? I guess Splat fans will enjoy it and won't question it, but, uh, no. Not really a winner.

A cat is incentivized to bake a cake to win a tv from a rigged contest after parents said no more tv. Not the greatest lesson for beginning readers to learn.

This was one of the first books my daughter ever read out loud. I still hear her voice saying the words as I read them.

Splat se sent un peu mal d'avoir brisé la télévision. Il est grondé et... ne peut pas regarder la télévision. Que décide-t-il? De participer à un concours pour gagner une télévision.

Bof.

Splat the Cat bakes a cake in the hopes of winning a new television.

As with many of the Splat the Cat books, this one contains humorous destruction, which I don’t find humorous as either a parent or an individual.

This early reader teaches words ending in -ake. The 10 words in the -ake sound family found in this book are listed on the inside front cover.

Although it is designated as a Level 1 beginning reader, this book is longer and wordier with more complex sentence structures than most Level 1 beginning readers.

Splat and Seymour, his little mousie buddy, decide to enter the cake baking contest - and have a little bit of trouble. Okay, more than a little...

Splat is watching his favourite television show, and accidentally breaks the television. Everyone is upset. But Splat has a plan. The first prize for the cake baking contest is a brand new television! Splat just got to win it! He tries, and tries, but nothing goes right. He just winds up making a bigger mess. Poor Splat! But things turn out all right in the end.

This book teaches to keep trying, even when things seem hopeless, and to follow your dreams. Good advice for anyone, no matter their age!

I read this book to one of the 6 year olds that I baby sit. She was laughing and rolling around on the floor. Splat the Cat as become a favorite to make children. Personally to me, it was not one of my favorites. The words were confusing and sorta complicated. My six her old would as me "what does that mean"I feel like when children read a children books, they should enjoy it not constantly ask a meaning of a word. The illustrations and to "die for". So funny, and really do capture the attention of the audience. This book felt more of an enjoyment book, then a book you would teach in a classroom with.

Splat gets overexcited while watching his favorite TV show Super Cat and ends up breaking the TV and making a huge milkshake mess too. His parents send him outside for some fresh air and Splat sees a poster for a baking contest for the grand prize is a TV! He tries his best to make a cake, but makes another big mess. The night before the contest Splat has a dream that not only helps him win the contest, but also the praise of his hero!

Recommended for grades 1-3.

Splat the Cat rules over all!!! So does Super Cat, his favorite hero on TV. But when he accidentally breaks the tube, his parents punish him with no more TV...and NO MORE SUPER CAT!!! Bummerrrrr! So Splat finds out about a cooking-cake contest that could redeem him somehow...only he CAN'T COOK!!! Yet how he pulls thru and makes the bast cake in honor of his hero...that, to say the least, is "the icing on the cake"! How sweeeet!!! And, of course, so is Splat!!! MORE SPLAT ON THE MENU!!!!!!

This series really seems to be trying to cash in on a winning formula, rather than creating a bunch of interesting stories. The characters are cute, but the story really seems to fall flat. Still, I'm sure it could appeal to beginning readers. Our oldest read this book aloud to us tonight.

Splat breaks his family's TV, so he enters a contest to win a new TV. The contest is a cake baking contest. Splat ends up going through some adventures, but he wins the contest. This book is good for young readers and the sentences use repetition. The sentences are simple, but the books is exciting for students as well. There is a series of Splat the Cat books.

Great book for my kids ages 2 and 5. The pages are illustrated very nicely, big and colorful. The text is large and very easy to read. Overall very cute book. The concept of the story keeps childrens attention and leaves them wondering what kinda cake will Splat come up with.

This book is not a favorite of mine, but it does great at capturing the appropriate audience's attention. Children seem to enjoy this book because it is fun and silly. Though it would not be used to teach a lesson in my classroom, it is a great book to have for children to just enjoy.

My granddaughter and I have always enjoyed Splat the Cat books. This one is full of rhyming words like Cake, bake, take etc. So for a beginning reader this would help them recognize those type of words along with a super fun book.
