Rosalind Lauer grew up in a large family in Maryland and began visiting Lancaster County’s Amish community as a child. Lauer attended Wagner College in New York City and worked as an editor for Simon & Schuster and Harlequin Books. She now lives with her family in Oregon, where she writes in the shade of some towering two-hundred-year-old Douglas fir trees.
.. A Simple Spring is the second installation to A Seasons of Lancaster Series by Rosalind Lauer. I truly enjoy reading a traditional Amish story because they usually include lessons in faith, humility, and amazing grace. These books are lengthy, but they do not disappoint!
Many people do not understand that being Amish is about family, customs, and faith. It is about trying to live right by the rules of the Ordnung. This installation certainly focuses on the double life contrasting the life the heroine is living, as she attempts to determine which suits her more than the other.

A CHANCE TO FOLLOW HER HEART,
A CHOICE THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME
Although Sadie King is blessed with the voice of an angel, she never thought that following the song in her heart would take her far beyond the strict boundaries of her Amish faith and away from the only home she’s ever known. But during her rumspringa, one road leads to another, and suddenly she’s secretly performing with a band. Now she faces an impossible choice between the music in her heart and the traditions branded upon her soul.
Mike Trueherz is a dedicated young paramedic who finds a kindred spirit in Sadie. Torn between family duty and his desire to pursue a life beyond his father’s rural medical practice, he is inspired by Sadie’s honesty and courage.
While spring unfurls rich colors and bounty through the countryside of Lancaster County, Sadie and Mike must reconcile their families expectations with their own callings. Ultimately, their faith in each other and the God that has brought them together will give them the strength and the peace to take a chance—and to make the biggest decision of their lives.
A coming-of-age story reflecting the deepest messages of love, A Simple Spring is music for the heart.
The feeling of freedom toys with the heroine's life choice and she has to learn how to stand on her own two feet and make a decision about the remainder of her life. "To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
Sadie found it difficult to choose between the Amish lifestyle and the English lifestyle since there were aspects in each that appealed to her strongly. Her struggle was difficult for her family as well, since her choice would affect their family unit as a whole. What will she decide in the end? That is the adventure of this story.
I enjoyed the audible version of this book, narrated by Cassandra Campbell.
I would definitely recommend this series to those that enjoy the Amish genre.
This is the third book I've read by this author. Now maybe I'm a little slow, but I for sure know, with no doubt, that this author is not for me. I usually like Amish fiction. My two biggest dislikes were: dialogue and constant repetition. A third thing is support for what I'm asked to believe. Things aren't so just because the author tells me so. It should be shown. I can overlook some things, especially if there are also things I love. However, for the most part, these specific things determine my enjoyment level.
This author writes stories that are sweet, as they probably should be in this genre. I don't dispute that. But there is so much more to a story than that.
Another amazing book in this series. I enjoyed reading more about the characters and their daily lives at the farm. I wasn’t sure what direction her heart was going to go throughout the book she has a hard time deciding wether to stay in her Amish faith or to not get baptised and to leave the Amish faith. Looking forward to the next book in the series and at the same time sad it’s the last book in the series.
An interesting look at the shows of a young Amish girl who feels called by God to sing - something frowned upon in the Amish society. Being a member of the Amish required true self discipline which I don't think could work for me. At times the book seemed simplistic and naive. It could certainly work for young adult readers. It is one of a series and if I run accross others I might read them to find ot about characters already introduced.
Book #2 in the seasons of Lancaster series. This portion sums up the book nicely “Sadie held her hands out, thinking of how she had learned to extend her fingers to reach distant keys on the piano. Manual dexterity, Katherine called it. She had learned that it was a good thing to reach out to new lengths. New places, new faces, new dreams. God willing, she would keep reaching out to the big world beyond this farm.
I like this book but not as much as I liked the first book in the series! It still had a cute Amish romance story but it was sad to watch the gifts God gave Sadie, pull her away from her family. I'm sure that happens in real life so I guess it was great of the author to help bring out such emotions from the story!
I did enjoy this book. I enjoyed the first book in the series, a simple winter, more perhaps because I didn’t know what to expect. After having read that one, I kind of predicted how this one would end, but I still enjoyed it. I read the first two chapters in the next book, A simple autumn, as they were added back to the end of Spring. I do look forward to reading that one also.
some paths we choose are not what other people want us to take. it's hard to follow what someone excepts you to do and follow the path your heart wants you to follow.
Amish / English what will Sadie chose she is torn but has to make her own choices not just what her family thinks she should do and can she keep a promise to her sister?
This book is the second of three "Seasons of Lancaster" books which follow the same King family. The first was "A Simple Winter" and the third isn't out yet "A Simple Autumn (scheduled Fall 2012). This is the first "Seasons of Lancaster" book I've read and there is no need to read the first book before this as the characters are all very well drawn out and you will get the overall idea of who they are.
"A Simple Spring" starts out with the main character, Sadie King. Sadie is a young Amish girl who is in the midst of her rumspringa. Sadie has a God-given talent of a beautiful singing voice and in the Amish community there's no real way for a woman to share it. While in her rumsprina Sadie has been working in a hotel and she meets her first boyfriend of sorts, Frank while employed there. Frank sees her talent so he asks Sadie to sing for his garage band. Soon Sadie's job performance at the hotel suffers (mainly due to Frank's influence) and she gets fired. Sadie then lies to her brother Adam (the head of her household) and the rest of her family and tells them she is going to work, when she is going to sing with the band instead. She starts to wonder if God is calling her to something other than living Amish. To add to Sadie's confusion during this time she meets Dr. Trueherz's son Mike. She and Mike have a lot in common and they start spending more and more time together. Sadie starts to feel like Mike is her "Big Love", meanwhile Frank starts to show more and more of his true colors. To make matters worse the Amish bishops get wind of Sadie's singing with the band. Will Sadie have the courage to go on the path that she feels God is calling her? How will she know what to do?
There are also a few secondary stories going on during Sadie's confusion. Mike is having his own difficultly choosing his own path in life, as his father is insistent that he take over the family medical practice. Remy (Sadie's soon to be sister-in-law) is becoming inducted into the Amish community so she can marry Adam and Sadie's sister Mary's upcoming wedding.
I really enjoyed this Amish romance. It's not your typical Amish story and the characters are not stereotypical Amish with "perfect" behavior. The characters were all likable and had relatable strengths and weaknesses. This story had a lot of Biblical references and didn't keep from touching on Biblical principals.
The only thing I didn't like in this book was that I thought the ending felt very rushed, when Sadie finally made her decision. Everything else was drawn out well and the ending was just too rushed and quick.
Overall, though I really enjoyed this book and I plan on reading the first of this series and the third. I'm interested to see what else is going to conspire in the King clan.

A CHANCE TO FOLLOW HER HEART, A CHOICE THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME
Although Sadie King is blessed with the voice of an angel, she never thought that following the song in her heart would take her far beyond the strict boundaries of her Amish faith and away from the only home she’s ever known. But during her rumspringa, one road leads to another, and suddenly she’s secretly performing with a band.
A SIMPLE SPRING is the second book in Ms. Lauer’s Amish series, A Seasons of Lancaster. Readers will want to read the first book, A Simple Winter, first and then look for A Simple Autumn as the books all tie in together.
Sadie is struggling to find her place. It is time to join the church, yet to do so means giving up her music. She is doing things no Amish girl has done before, singing on the stage in bars. Plus she is dating an Englisch man, the leader of the band, although she knows she’ll never want to marry him. Mike is struggling with his choices as well. His parents are pressuring him into the medical field—a position he is born and bred to, but he just isn’t so sure that’s the right choice for him. When these two individuals meet and start becoming friends, it becomes complicated.
As other readers have said, this book is slow. Sadie makes some really bad, childish decisions. And she is argumentive—rebelling against her older brother. Totally realistic, but difficult to read sibling squabbles. I liked Mike. He reminded me a lot of my son. A totally sweet, caring man, that people automatically trust—a great trait for a doctor. Or any other career. If you like Amish fiction, the A SIMPLE SPRING is a good choice. $15.00. 400 pages.
Sadie King has always done her best to live a good Amish life but she loves to sing and most music is frowned upon by the Amish community. Her Rumspringa has given her the chance to sing in a band but she is facing pressure from her family to be baptized which would mean giving up singing forever. Mike Trueherz, an Englisher, is in a similar situation - his doctor father wants him to become a doctor and eventually take over his practice but Mike doesn't want to become a doctor. As both Sadie and Mike struggle with deciding which world they belong to they become friends and soon more than friends which leads to even more complications as Amish and Englishers rarely marry.
I've read many Amish romances and "A Simple Spring" may be one of the best I've read. It is a moving, often heartbreaking look at two people who are trying to please their families yet follow their own hearts at the same time. Sadie's story is at the forefront and author Rosalind Lauer has created an achingly real character who loves the Amish way of life yet is lured by life in the city and her love of all kinds of music. Lauer does an excellent job of comparing Sadie's struggles with that of Remy McCallister's story in A Simple Winter: A Seasons of Lancaster Novel (the first book in the series) - of all the characters Remy understands the best the decisions Sadie has to make. Lauer never criticizes the Amish community but it is clear how strict Amish life can be and how strict Amish families and church members can be. Mike's story is in the background (a wise decision by Lauer as Sadie's story is far more compelling although Mike's story may be more familiar to readers) yet you still feel for him as he struggles to find the right way to tell his father he doesn't want to be a doctor. Lauer lets the romance between Sadie and Mike develop slowly and when it does develop it is a very sweet romance. I know there will be another book in the series and look forward to hearing more about Sadie and Mike and their families.
"A Simple Spring" is a moving, at times heartbreaking romance (keep tissues nearby while reading it). Highly recommended.
Author Rosalind Lauer chose to set her heartfelt Amish romance series in the changing seasons of the year in order to show the shaded complexities of the Amish way of life. The simpler lifestyle of the "plain people" is not lacking in color or variety--the elements are just painted with a more subtle palette. "A Simple Spring" is the second book in the "Seasons of Lancaster" series, and it focuses on the story of Sadie King, whom we first met in "A Simple Winter". Sadie has dreams of making the most of her natural singing talent, but pursuing her heart's desire would take her away from her family and her home and lead her beyond the boundaries of her faith. However, during her rumpsringa, the time when Amish youth are given greater freedom before their baptism into the faith, Sadie secretly performs with a band. Mike Trueherz is a young paramedic who is expected to take over his father's rural medical practice. When he meets Sadie, he finds a kindred spirit who inspires him to follow his own dreams. Will Sadie and Mike each find a way to make the best of both worlds, or will old traditions and family obligations keep them from true happiness? In matters of the heart, nothing is ever really simple.
Rosalind Lauer in book two of Seasons of Lancaster, A Simple Spring crafts a beautiful and thought-stirring story. Sadie King, raised in an Amish community explores the world outside while grappling with an amazing musical talent - her singing voice. What captures my interest is the way in which Ms. Lauer presents opportunities to develop this gift, unaccepted in her home community. Sadie strikes up a romantic relationship with band leader, Frank. While this friendship exploits her talent Sadie is restless, wanting to use her gift to draw others to God. Meanwhile she falls in love with Mike Trueherz who is going through his own quest to follow God's direction for his life, not his father's dream.
Sadie finds comfort in her faith and friend Remy, yet struggles to find her way in the Englisher world. Remy, her soon to be sister-in-law comes from the English world and is seeking to be baptized into the Amish faith and marry Sadie's brother. Both are lifelong commitments and taken very seriously. Together the women forge ahead trying to fit into each other's world while seeking God's guidance.
So, how does it all turn out? Pick up a copy, it's a God honoring, challenging and family read! Thumbs up!
There's nothing simple about Sadie's spring! Her story took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride the likes of which I won't soon forget. A breath-taking, poignant story about finding yourself and God's purpose for you. It made me sad and happy and sad some more! This book really tugged at my heart-strings.
It is the second in the Seasons of Lancaster County series but it's written so well that you don't need to read the first one to enjoy this one. Though Adam and Remy of A Simple Winter and all the King clan feature prominently in A Simple Spring as well. Maybe that's why I found this such an emotional read -- not only was I struggling right along with Sadie, but with her brother, Adam, as well since I knew how her actions would impact on him. You've got to love an author who can create such memorable characters that a reader can worry over them the way I did!
Of course, I can't wait to read the last book - A Simple Autumn -- which releases in October. But I fear that even then I won't be willing to let the King family go! They've made an impact on me.
I found A Simple Spring by Rosalind Lauer to be a bit disappointing.
Why? The plot was interesting and well constructed. Depicting the internal struggle of a young woman trying to choose her future in the Amish world she had grown up in or use her God-given musical talents in the English world.
The Pennsylvania setting was adequate and well done.
It was the two main characters. I could not ‘see; them as real people! Both Sadie King and her counterpart Mike Trueherz, in this story seemed a bit vague to me. There were moments when they came alive, but more often it seemed they were plodding along with little purpose.
I give this book 3 stars, more for plot idea and setting than for the characters within.
I am sure that many will disagree with my assessment, and that’s fine. Reading is subjective.
