As a die-hard fan of enemies-to-lovers and grumpy-meets-sunshine tropes, I honestly wanted to enjoy this book. However, I was surprised to find that I disliked the "sunshine" character and empathized more with the grumpy one. The heroine was really annoying, and I kept waiting for her redemption and to see things from a different perspective instead of acting like a spoiled brat. Her character development felt a little slow to me. Additionally, the enemies-to-lovers trope that was emphasized in the title wasn't the main focus of the book. It could have been executed more effectively, but instead, as soon as the characters spent their first alone time together, they just started liking each other, which felt too instant. I had a hard time getting into the story in the first half while I kept disliking Brynn Cornell (our not-so-sunshine heroine). I pushed myself harder to keep going and not choose the DNF option. Thankfully, the second half was a sweeter, more engaging little town story that I easily got attached to the other characters.
Here's a summary of the plot:
Cornell is the "Elle Woods" of the morning show, with a "Ray of Sunshine" persona. However, one wrongful comment disparaging her hometown tarnishes the entire image she has built. Her only chance to salvage her reputation and win back her viewers is to return to the same place she left 20 years ago and film an apology video, winning the blessing of the people. Her path crosses with Sebastian Sudworth, a brooding, retired famous journalist who is working odd jobs to waste his potential, with a mysterious reason for leaving his life behind to make a fresh start in Adelaide Springs, Colorado. He becomes the private chauffeur of Brynn, but as you can imagine, he doesn't like her much. Brynn realizes she has to win over the entire town, including Sebastian, to achieve her goal and return to her old job. Maybe she can do more than win him over—she may also make him fall in love with her.
Overall, I enjoyed the second half more, but I couldn't connect with the heroine. At least Sebastian was a more likable and attachable character. That's why I decided to give it three stars. This is still a good choice for readers who enjoy sweet, small-town romances.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson-FICTION/Thomas Nelson for sharing this ARC copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.
True story: I don’t know that I fully loved this book until I listened to the audiobook. I was proud of it…I believed in it…but writing it was hard, and I couldn’t really say I loved it. But I love it now. Now that I’m able to forget, at least while Talon David is reading to me, that I had anything to do with its creation, I really, really love Brynn and Seb. ❤️
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Audio for this audiobook in exchange of a honest review.
🌟🌟🌟/5
Brynn and Sebastian hate each other was an enjoyable rollercoaster.
Brynn is a host for a sunny morning-show and her tv persona is this sweet and kind girl that loves everyone when in reality she is much more opinionated (and to be honest a brat) than what she is forced to show. One a mistake uncovers her real personality and she is force to visit her tiny hometown she left twenty years prior to make amends. There she meets Sebastian, the only newcomer in the city since she left. Everyone seems to like him but the two immediately dislike each other.
For the first 57% of the book I HATED Brynn. She was disrespectful, unpolite and generally a brat, so much so that I wanted to slap her in the face every time she opened her mouth, but as the story unravels she begins to open up with the city, her old friends and Sebastian and I really enjoyed the last 43%. I think it is very unusual to have the main character so unlikable but all worked by the end. Sebastian, on the other end, was perfect since page 1 and I loved him instantly.
I think the timeline of this book was a little rushed Everything takes place in the span of a week and this should be ´enemies to lovers ´ meaning they are actually enemies for like three days.
👎 One thing I really didn´t like: Why Brynn chapters were written in first person and Seb´s in third?!? It didn´t make sense to me really.
👍Things I particularly like: - I´m a sucker for pop culture and I loved all the reference the author makes. - The author really makes you feel like you are in a small town in the middle of the mountains. The vibes were there and I know have the urge to go on a road trip in the middle of nowhere. - The voice actress was really good.
Overall it was a fun listen and if you enjoy small town romances this is for you.
Sebastian was definitely not the only one who did not like Byrnn at the beginning of this book. While she had moments of light clarity there were sometimes, my literal eye roll could not be held. I did enjoy seeing the progression of her character as well as her relationships with the others and especially Sebastien. I think I'm in need of a mountain vacation sometime soon after this read.
This book didn’t work for me! I’m a sucker for the grumpy x sunshine trope, but in this case, the sunshine character was a mean girl, and the grump was unnecessarily rude for most of the book.
I’m giving this two stars because I did enjoy the dynamic between the characters in the last few chapters. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wasn't expecting much when I started it, and I'm glad, because it was just an average read.
I liked that the plot was interesting, the hometown descriptions vivid and the overall vibes were very Hallmark-y. That's about it though.
I tried with the characters, but both weren't exactly likable. Brynn was rude all the time and Sebastian mean for basically no reason. Then poof they're in love...yeah no. I don't buy it. They had no chemistry, not even as "enemies".
The audiobook was okay and helped me get through this faster than I thought I would. At first I didn't like the narrator, but since Brynn is in her late 30s it makes sense why a more "mature" sounding voice was chosen.
2.5⭐️ Brynn was very unrelatable to me and was extremely unlikable for most of the book. Sebastian was fine but I didn’t feel much from his character. Clean and no language but the characters did nothing for me and I skim listened for most of it.
Fantastic romantic comedy novel, that had everything I could ask for, a heartwarming plot, relatable characters with their own flaws, clever and amusing conversations, and a small-town Colorado setting. This sweet and clean romance is full of funny, emotional, and heartwarming moments, including swoon-worthy kisses that will have you laughing and crying along with the characters. You'll find yourself falling in love with the story and its depth and realism.
The story revolves around Brynn, a morning-show host, who gained a reputation as a mean girl after a bad moment on air. She returns to her hometown of Adelaide Springs, Colorado to redeem herself and show viewers that she's not who they think she is. Along the way, she meets Sebastian, a former big news reporter, a grumpy with anxiety issues who now lives a quiet life in the small town.
I really enjoyed reading this book with the enemies-to-lovers theme, which was well executed. Brynn is a fascinating character, she is real, and despite her occasional sarcasm and disconnection from current trends, her ability to overcome adversity and discover her true self was inspiring. All things considered, the story did not disappoint me. However, I felt that there were too many references to pop culture, which was my only criticism. The storyline had some great side characters that added a lot of fun and variety. I especially enjoyed the witty banter between Brynn and Sebastian, too delicious! Overall a great read, Exceptionally smart and entertaining, and I highly recommend it!
Content: Clean Romance, kissing only.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for providing me with an eARC. I would like to clarify that all opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved this small town in Colorado romance. It had so many hilarious moments that I laughed so hard. It also had some deeper, more emotional moments. I love the enemies to lovers trope, so I loved everything about this one. I listened to the audiobook of this, and the narrator did an amazing job and portrayed the characters. At first, I didn't really like Brynn, but she definitely grew on me. I enjoyed the climax and ending as well. It's such a fun romantic comedy!
I received this book in audiobook format by NetGalley and Thomas Nelson to listen/review. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully listening to this audiobook.
Thank you to the author 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳, publishers Thomas Nelson, and NetGalley for a digital review copy. All views are mine.
This is a cute closed-door romance with a lot of miscommunication and a great deal of forgiveness and grace given. This isn't always a winning combination, but turns out to be here, despite my resistance. Please find below my honest reactions as I read.
Three (or more) things I loved:
1. Third person from two perspectives. First of all, I like the third person style choice. Also, it works here with the alternating perspectives. Alternating first person gets confusing as the narrative voice is often difficult to distinguish. ...
3. Mr. Fielding and his tree and what they say about growing up in small towns and going home again. ...
Three (or more) things I didn't love:
...
3. I didn't love how this book talks about childhood trauma: I'd spent twenty years trying to rid myself of Bren. Brenda Cornell wasn't bad or weak, but her life and her mind were chaos. She was full of regret and sadness. She was lonely. She's a fighter, but not the right kind of fighter to survive in the world I had chosen to inhabit. Ch15

What a title! That's what initially drew me towards this book (I was expecting Ten Things I Hate About You vibes). And they did, really hate each other. So much so that three-fourths of the way through this book I was wondering where the turn around would be. Then there it was, very sudden and very late in the game. It seemed forced and a bit awkward. For me it was too much of a build up for too little of a happy ending. The ending was thrown together very quickly and haphazardly. A lot was in the last few chapters and it was too little, too late.
Brynn is an interesting character. At surface level she is bratty and unlikable. But, as you peel back her layers you see the reasons she is the way she is and she has depth. I like that she's not a typical FMC that you would find in this type of story although I don't think she will be well received by most. I really didn't start to like her until almost the end of the story.
Overall, this story was hard to get into because of the slow start, very fast finish and unlikable characters. There was too much hate and not enough romance for a romance book.
Ooof. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me a chance at reading this one.
I expected something cute, fun, and sassy. Whatever I read or attempted to read felt like a repressed Christian's version of 'romance'. There was no bite. The bickering / banter felt absolutely forced. The characters themselves also felt very thin - no depth. It was like someone could only see surface level and wrote them as they saw them not as they felt them to be.
I have read better enemies to lovers, and the plot itself sounded like it had the potential to be fun. But honestly, with this writing, no.
Cohost of the morning show Sunup, Brynn Cornell is known for her sunny, girl-next-door disposition. But when her career quickly goes downhill after unknowingly bashing her former Colorado hometown on-air, Brynn is forced back to Adelaide Springs to (hopefully) clear her name.
I could see some readers struggling initially with Brynn. But keep an open mind. Ex-reporter and current resident of Adelaide Springs, Sebastian Sudworth is there to put her in her place—he had absolutely zero sympathy for Brynn and her self-centered attitude. Their bickering was so fun!
With a great slow burn and plenty of emotional discussions along the way, the romance was very sweet. I especially enjoyed seeing how the endearing town of Adelaide Springs impacted each of their lives in opposite ways.
Unfortunately the pacing just fell flat for me in places. And this is purely a personal preference, but I don't like too many pop culture references. The constant nod to our world—like Brynn mentioning she dated John Mayer and once kissed a member of One Direction, for example—took me completely out of the story.
A quippy and fresh enemies to lovers story that I gobbled in one sitting on a flight. Turner's smart humour undercut with resonant emotional tones of self discovery and belonging play out in a wonderfully tropey way. Fans of Tessa Bailey and Emily Henry will love this atmospheric new Turner read!
*Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a copy of this to review!*
This is my third two star book in a row someone please save me lmao.
Brynn and Sebastian hate each other and if we’re being frank, I kind of hate them too. I am so so disappointed because I picked this book up expecting to break free of my slump with some feel good fun romance, and wow was this just so very underwhelming. It reminded me so much of The Simple Wild in terms of plot, tropes, and vibes, and that’s another book that fell a bit flat for me so I’m not surprised this one didn’t blow me away. Though I suppose if you enjoyed that, you may enjoy this!
I do think this is a book you kind of have to not look too closely at if you want to fully immerse yourself and have a good time. I found the plotlist and setup of the book a little silly, which in consequence made the ‘enemies to lovers trope that it was trying to pull off fail completely. I just didn’t think her saying some minor comments about a town, and then everyone in the town going on an absolute rampage and smear campaign was soooo extra. And then for our male main character to be so vexed about it and treat her snootily because of it just gave me the ick. The beginning of their ‘enemies arc just felt really forced and immature. This coupled with the really cringe repeated mentions of kissing members of One Direction was just a little bit too much for me to be honest.
The story itself felt okay but the two main characters had absolutely no chemistry really, and there was no real effort to try and build any either. By the 52% mark they’d still barely spoken or formed any sort of romantic chemistry with each other so I just wasn't buying into them as a couple, and I wasn’t rooting for them and honestly couldn’t have cared less about their relationship. For an enemies to lovers dynamic, this was terribly handled unfortunately. By the time we get to the character getting together and admitting their feelings and attraction for one another, it feels really random and nonsensical. I guess it was kind of sweet, but I didn’t care either way.
While the female protagonist wasn’t exactly my favourite person in the world, she was at least leagues ahead of the bland man that was our supposed love interest. He was so bland, which I could have lived with, but the things he was saying were so bizarre to me. His whole story arc and his ‘trauma that we have to unpack is literally him witnessing a genocide and several war crimes and prioritising his journalism and getting good video footage of it over helping people? I just think that’s a crazy thing to write about a character and still make me want to root for them as a potential romantic interest. There wasn’t nearly enough nuance to this discussion to even begin to cover it. He also says that when he was reporting on the genocide he always tries as a journalist to report things in neutrality reporting on a genocide in neutrality? So people can ‘make their own minds up? Crazy lmao. He literally made the whole situation about him and it sounded oddly like a white saviour/white guilt complex somewhere in there that was very poorly handled, and then brushed under the rug. And we had about four sentences on PTSD randomly before our happily ever after. It was just all over the place for me.
I considered giving this book a middle of the road three but when I sit and think about it, I think it missed too many marks as a romance novel for me.
Oh my stars, I adored this book so much! This was my most anticipated read of 2023, and it most definitely did not disappoint! I’ve read all of Bethany Turner’s romcoms, and I am huge fan of her writing. I LOVE the way this talented author writes stories that go deep and touch my heart, while simultaneously making me laugh! Brynn Cornell is a broken character in desperate need of healing, my heart broke for all she had gone through, and as I watched her grow and change I came to love her! Sebastian Sudworth is an amazing hero and I fell head over heels in love with him the first time he appeared on the page! And I would be remiss if I did not mention Murrow, this super sweet dog completely stole my heart! To be honest enemies-to-lovers is not one of my favorite tropes, but I absolutely loved this one! In my opinion the way the romance developed was utter perfection! BTW, this book contains one of my all time favorite kissing scenes! And without giving spoilers let me just say that there were two other scenes, one involving a tree, and the other featuring PTA night at the local bar and grill that will forever be favorites of mine, but you’re just gonna have to read the book to find out why! I had been eagerly anticipating getting to visit Adelaide Springs, and I quickly fell in love with this adorable fictional Colorado small town, and it’s quirky and all around amazing cast of secondary characters! Bethany Turner is hilarious and I lost count of how many times this amazing book had me laughing out loud! Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other: A Love Story is a delightful feel-good romcom that brilliantly balances humor with some tough topics. This is a deeply thought-provoking book about second chances, forgiveness, and what love truly looks like. This book will deepen your understanding of the incredible power of our words, which is a power to be wielded with great care. And it just might cause you to ask yourself, “Am I being authentic with others? and “Am I using my words to tear others down or build them up? I loved absolutely everything about this book, it is one of my top 5 favorite reads of 2023, and I most highly recommend it!
TW: mentions of past child neglect and abuse (not detailed), PTSD, brief mentions of war violence
I received a complimentary Advanced Reading Copy of this book from the author My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other by Bethany Turner is a fun loving romantic-comedy. Brynn Cornell is a morning show host who has made an error and must go back to her home town to make it right. Sebastian Sudworth is an x-reporter in hiding who used to cover breaking news stories internationally. They both meet in tiny Adelaide Springs, Colorado not particularly fond of the other.
I am a fan of Brynn and Sebastian. I enjoyed their banter, love story, and backstory. The characters in Adelaide Springs were funny, quirky and enjoyable to get to know. It was fun to get a peak into the world of television morning shows and news reporting. The author has an amazing way of bringing in pop culture and making me smile! The lovely setting is in a small town Colorado was fabulous and I just happened to start this while in a small town in Colorado. Destiny!
Brynn and Sebastian Hate Other is a delightful romantic comedy with fun pop culture references, a great small town setting, and sweet romance. It was the reading pick me up I needed. I recommend!
I was given a copy by the publisher and not required to write a positive review!
This was such a fun and compelling read. I love Bethany's voice -- as an author she's perfected the contemporary rom com, but what I appreciate is the way she layers in such heart. It would have been easy to leave this as a superficial gal-who-left-town-and-didn't-want-to-return v. the guy-who's-trying-to-hide-and-protect-the-town-that-adopted-him. Instead, the heroine and hero are rich, three dimensional people with reasons that motivate their actions. That carries through to the supporting characters, too. I read this at the same time I was reading another book that stayed on a surface level, so the contrast was so stark.
At the same time, don't think this isn't a fun read. There's all kinds of pop references and just plain fun zaniness. I really enjoyed the trip to Adelaide Springs and the sparring between Brynn and Sebastian -- all the way to the last page. Such a great romance. And one I highly recommend.
The story is about a popular morning-show host, Brynn Cornell, known for her positive and humble personality. However, during one on-air mistake, she insults her hometown and its people, and it's revealed that maybe her sunshiny personality isn't real. Now, Brynn has to return to Adelaide Springs (the insulted hometown) to apologize and capture some wholesome content for the viewers. There she meets Sebastian Sudworth, a super-known reporter, who's been living in Adelaide Springs for the last six years. He loves this little town and its habitants, and it makes sense that Brynn and Sebastian clash. Let's start with the positive aspects. I enjoyed reading the last half of the book because it's where the meaningful interactions between Brynn and the people she used to know and love happened. These scenes were sweet, and some of them even moving. Also, the author did a good job of capturing the essence of the little town and making it very atmospheric. Now, to the negatives. The first half of the book was a slog to read. I didn't care about Bryn's "cancellation" and the "hate" between Brynn and Sebastian felt forced and uninteresting. Besides that, I really disliked the mention of real people's names since, at least in one case, the text literally insults those people. How dare you call Julie Andrews self-righteous, rude, and insufferable??? All in all, I would recommend this book to people who enjoy Hallmark movies. It matches their energy perfectly.
** I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. **
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free e-copy in exchange for an honest review.*
Let's just get it out there. Brynn is a really difficult character to like for nearly half of the book. But I think in the end that's why this story worked for me. I wanted to write her off as easily as the townspeople of Adelaide Springs, Colorado did when she insulted them on national air. I had trouble liking her because she didn't fit the typical "sunshine" mold in a "grumpy-meets-sunshine" trope. I wanted her to be sunshiny. I wanted her to be likable. But initially she just kept coming across as shallow and selfish. Then I hit a point right around the midway mark that turned it all around for me. It was a moment between her and Doc. The moment I realized she wasn't shallow or selfish. She was extremely wounded, and this is how wounded characters behave. I started seeing her though Doc's eyes from that point on, and you know what—I absolutely fell in love with the story.
It's a really good plot with great character building! We follow Brynn who at first is a little grumpy about her situation but we grow with her seeing her work through things and fall in love in the process! Like who doesn't love enemies to lovers?? The romance is so cute. Every single character was great, it was easy to remember who everyone was! There's something so great about a small town vibe in romance books that just adds to the cuteness.
if you're looking for a cute grumpy x sunshine, enemies to lovers, clean romance I would totally recommend this!!
Thank you NetGalley, Bethany Turner and Thomas Nelson for providing me with a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
4.5 ⭐️ Brynn and Sebastian Hate Each Other is a thoroughly enjoyable clean romance (and this is coming from someone who says she’s not a romance reader, mind you). The book is published by Thomas Nelson, who seem to still consider themselves a Christian publishing house, (although I’m not sure I do, but that’s a story for another time). There isn’t a faith element in this book, as there is in many of Turner’s other books, and that’s one thing I found lacking in BASHEO.
The book summary describes Brynn as a “sunny morning-show host, but that’s a bit misleading. While Brynn’s work persona IS that of sunny morning-show host, that isn’t her day to day persona. In actuality, she’s insecure, judgmental, and sometimes downright rude. When Brynn returns to her hometown and immediately sticks her foot in her mouth, it’s Sebastian, a guy with his own issues, that her life becomes entangled with.
What I like about this book: -It’s clean in terms of both language and sexual content -It showcases two imperfect characters who experience great character growth yet aren’t magically “perfect by the end of the story -It allows Turner’s authorial voice to show through, including pop-culture references from previous decades, which is one of the things I love about her work.
In terms of the audiobook, the creators chose a perfect narrator. Her voice was a great fit for the characters, her inflection lent authenticity to the story, and she pronounced words correctly. (Is anyone else bothered when audiobook narrators mispronounce words??) Overall a great quality audiobook that I definitely recommend.
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I really liked the redemption arc in this story and how I could definitely understand how Brynn became cold to her hometown. I actually watched a Hallmark movie this past winter that was a very similar storyline😃 (3.5).
I really enjoyed this enemies to lovers, small town romance that sees a big shot morning show host trying to recover her reputation after accidentally bashing her tiny Colorado hometown live on air.
Brynn hasn't been back home in YEARS and doesn't even know if anyone there will welcome her return but she has one chance to redeem herself if she can convince the town to forgive her. She gets off on the wrong foot right away though when she keeps saying the wrong things around Sebastian, the man acting as her chauffeur.
Slowly Brynn and Sebastian start to warm up to one another as she tries to convince him the town should revive a beloved Festival tradition. While I felt their romance went from zero to insta love a little too fast for my tastes the two did have great banter and chemistry and helped one another realize happiness is possible if you take a chance on trying something new.
Good on audio with a fun epilogue. This is perfect for fans of authors like Sarah Adams or Courtney Walsh. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
