#1 New York Times bestselling author KAMI GARCIA (Beautiful Creatures) and artist GABRIEL PICOLO, the creative duo behind the New York Times bestselling TEEN TITANS graphic novel series, are back with a first look at a new Titan!
Kori Anders summer job at a ritzy Santa Monica beach club is fun, but she doesn't feel like she belongs there. She never breaks the rules, she doesn’t care about keeping up with the current trends, and she can’t be bothered rushing around to make an appearance at all the parties—in fact, Kori avoids rushing at all costs because of her Ehlers Danlos Syndrome diagnosis. What she does feel is an inexplicable draw to the stars.
Her older sister, Kira, on the other hand, is the most popular girl around. With the hottest clothes, an even hotter boyfriend (the Tate Fairweather), and a take-no-prisoners attitude, she’s Kori’s opposite in every way. Sadly, Kori doesn’t think Tate is a good fit for her sister, and nothing she says will convince Kira to break up with him.
The summer heats up when Tate’s uncle, Lynch Fairweather, CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, asks Kori and Kira to participate in a clinical trial designed to advance treatments for EDS. During treatment, Kori begins to discover some strange powers that she has never had before…and she might not be the only one.
Can Kori uncover the truth about her powers and find a way to persuade her sister to trust her before it’s too late?

TW// ableism, mentions of death (including parents)
This graphic novel wasn’t bad, but it was definitely my least favorite in the series so far. I even considered giving it three stars. My problem with this one boils down to the side characters. A lot of them suck, especially Kori’s sister. Her sister was constantly getting on my nerves with her mean girl energy and how she ignores Kori’s advice when Kori is just trying to look out for her. The weird semi-incest relationship also really irritated me in this book. Kori’s sister is dating a guy who is the nephew of the man that Kori’s mom is going to marry soon. It’s complicated but a bit icky nonetheless.
That being said, there was still a lot that I adored about this book. Kori is another loveable character addition to this series. I know some of Starfire’s background from the Teen Titans tv show, so I know this book is only the tip of the iceberg to her story.
I loved getting to see Cyborg in this story. I wasn’t expecting to see him until later on in the series. The way his personality is written in this series works really well for me and it’s my favorite version of him from any DC media I’ve engaged with. I’m hoping that he gets his own book soon to explore more of his background. It would also be nice if Cyborg got a partner later in the series since everyone besides him has a clear endgame partner.
The pacing of this one flowed wonderfully. It’s truly one of the best parts to this series. It’s just the right pace where you can slowly learn new information about the universe but also stay engaged in the action.
I’m loving this series so far and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out next year.
It’s becoming a bit of a tradition to be here moments after the announcement of a new instalment for this graphic novel series. And I’m happy to announce the jawline on this cover is, once again, sharp enough to cut me. Starfire is gorgeous here!
I’ll be honest, Starfire is right next to Cyborg on the list of Teen Titans I don’t really care much about, but the announcement of this graphic novel still excited me. If anything, it’ll definitely be a feast for the eyes like all of Picolo’s works are. But mostly it’s cool to see DC actually sticking with a single writer and illustrator and making a series because this is one of their only YA graphic novel series and definitely their most successful.
⭑⤷ WAIT A DAMN MINUTE, THAT'S IT? THE STORY ONLY JUST STARTED AND Y'ALL ENDED IT W/ A FREAKING CLIFF HANGER WTF?!!
GIRL IM SO UPSET RN AFTER WAITING FOR SO LONGGGGGGG😔😔😔
I still loved it though, starfire & robin are MY NO. 1'S💌 --- {pre-read review}:. ⭑⤷ OMG SHE'S OUT NOW YESSSSS --- ISTG THIS BITCH CANT COME ANY FASTER NOV 5TH FEELS LIKE EONS AWAY
I love what the author did with Kori and Kira. They felt like young women going through college and had opposing personalities. I felt like I could relate to both sisters since they went from being best friends to being strangers. Kira wanted to be with her boyfriend and go out to party while Kori wanted to stay inside, look at the stars, or read her books. I liked how the author chose to go about their conflict. I hope Kira doesn't become a full-time villain as you can tell, she's seriously been manipulated by the boy she loves and sees people that she's admired hurting. Even her inferiority complex and jealousy issues felt real as I felt like most sisters have felt that between each other at least one time in their life.
I also feel for Kori. While I am the eldest sibling, Kori really tried to be different for her sister in order to fit into her lifestyle, and I felt sad not seeing Kira make the same effort with Kori's hobbies... Kori really tried looking out for her sister, and it seems like they only really had each other as their mom was practically non- existent.
My favorite part of the book had to be when Dick and Kori finally met. Hehehehehehe.... I felt like a school girl with a high school crush. Seeing them interact and meet was the CUTEST THING EVER! I hope to see their relationship develop even more in future books as the author really made both characters seem into each other which is really nice when you compare it to old comics or the old animated teen titans show.
However... as much as it pains me.... I will be knocking off some points because of how dirty the author chose to introduce cyborg... or Vic.... Bro didn't even get his own book... I hope the author will give him a proper solo book in the future, but they literally just slapped him into the book and said, "Here... be happy with these raggedy bread crumbs." LIKE NO... JUSTICE FOR MY BOI CYBORG.
I love Damian, but this is the WORST version of him. It's so out of characters it's not him anymore. Damian being soft? Damian on a girl's lap? Damian saying he's not enough for his girlfriend? Damian doubting himself and his abilities? Are you sure you didnt forget to introduce us who this new character is? Because he is not Damian Wayne!
Starfire is the fifth comic in the Teen Titans series.
This story is about Kori and Kira, two sisters who are just discovering their powers. I really enjoyed so much about this book. Them working at the beach club was fun. And seeing Kira manipulated by her boyfriend Tate and seeing how much Kori disliked him was interesting.
Unlike other readers I don't know much about the Teen Titans series. So I can't speak to whether the author did justice to the characters. However I have read all of the graphic novels in this series. And the character of Kori (Starfire) is probably my favorite. I loved that her Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is discussed. And I really enjoyed the relationship with her sister.
My least favorite part was to do with the creature. That just didn't interest me (although it was very short). I am excited that there will be another graphic novel as it was nice to see all of the teen titans together at the end.
Starfire is my favorite from Teen Titans and I enjoyed the story, even though it was a bit lackluster and rushed. The art is gorgeous and I hope the final installment of the series will end with a bang!
I’m going to preface this by saying, I had been waiting for this book to come out for over 6 years. My expectations were VERY high, and while it delivered in some ways, it fell short in others. Starfire is my favorite superhero for several reasons. 1. She’s a badass alien princess. 2. She gets her powers from her emotions. 3. She has a bubbly and kind personality. This book didn’t portray her as any of these things.
In the Teen Titans cartoon (2003), Starfire/Kori is an alien princess from the planet Tamaran who seeks refuge on Earth, while struggling to assimilate to human customs. Her superpowers (starbolts, flying, and strength) originate from her being an alien. In this book, she is a portrayed as a regular human teenager (at least so far), which makes the discovery of her powers feel random and clunky. This book also portrays Kori with EDS, a connective-tissue disease. While the representation was nice to see, it felt a little slapped-on. I would rather have seen an extraterrestrial Starfire/Kori trying to fit in with humans, which could’ve been a parallel to how immigrants feel trying to live in a new country.
My favorite part of the book was easily the artwork. Gabriel Picolo draws the Titans so beautifully, and every page was stunning to look at. I also really liked the book’s portrayal of Blackfire/Kira and Starfire/Kori’s sisterhood. Usually Blackfire is depicted as a villain, but in this book she was a caring sister, just misguided.
Overall, this book’s characterization of Starfire strayed a little too far from what I think makes her so special. And I am very bummed that there will only be one more in this series (Teen Titans: Together) and there will not be a Teen Titans: Robin Loves Starfire. The series feels kind of rushed at this point and I wish Starfire, Robin, and Cyborg got the same development Beast Boy and Raven received. Still, I really enjoyed the artwork and will definitely be re-reading this book. And Starfire will always be my favorite. ⭐️🔥💕
A lot of new characters were introduced in this novel but I didn’t feel like the plot moved forward very much. I love the art in this series and this was a quick and entertaining read.
Another very good piece of the puzzle that will become the Teen Titans. The modern twist on the origins story continues. Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo's love for these characters is obvious.
Sisters Kori and Kira Anders, for all their physical similarities, could not be more different. Whilst Kori is the shy and quieter younger sister, Kira is a mean out going party girl. Kira wants her younger sister to be like her just as long as Kori is not quite as good as her. Could the hooks of H.I.V.E. already be too far into the sisters already?
A good story of the team coming together, though there are a lot of emotions and wedges to still work out, and an evil organisation and assassin to deal with. It is all leading into the final to come. Are the players all in place now, or are they not?
(2.4) I was really looking forward to a valid Starfire origin story this was not that. More than half the story was nothingness feat Starfire and Kori constantly at each other’s throats about HIVE. It was very underwhelming. I mean Cyborg did not even get a proper introduction The highlight was as always the artwork.
In typical teen titans fashion, we get introduced to cyborg meshed into someone else’s story. And because the next book is “teen titans: together that means that cyborg is the only member who didn’t get his own book. Which is really, really disappointing. Especially because I know Gabriel Picolo loves cyborg. It feels so unfair that his character didn’t get to be as fully fleshed out as all the others. However, I guess if I had to choose I’m glad it was within Starfire’s story, because I love their friendship. BUT, it also just made me feel like her budding romance with Robin really illustrates how much of a third wheel he is. Anyway, I’m giving this book three stars because I actually think the pacing and writing has improved this time around. Still not great, but not horrendous. My other main issue is Blackfire. I take major issue with the fact that she’s evil because of a Boy™️. Blackfire bows before no man and would never let that punk little bitch Tate manipulate her. She’s just a bitch and selfish and that’s that. Although I know the setting is in a modern world for this story line so I guess it makes sense. Still upsets me though.

A book where Kori doesn’t have a tragic ending AND gets together (by the looks of it) with Dick? It gets 5 stars just for that since DC is as stubborn as a mule.
But in all actuality, it was by far my favorite of the series. I’m of course biased since Kori Anders is easily one of my top 5 favorite characters in the universe, but this was everything I wanted it to be and more. I wish Vic got his own book, but I’m also so excited to get to the climax of this story.
I will not ever understand why DC doesn’t capitalize on the nostalgia and popularity of this team. A publishing house with a whole multiverse and it simply refuses to give people what they want: this group of Titans being happy and living their best lives. It sounds like the next book is the last one, and it is sad if that’s the case, but here’s to hoping Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo can work on this universe more.
Teen Titans: Starfire is a solid intro to one of my favorite Teen Titans characters, but honestly I was really hoping for more even though it was still nice to see some of her powers develop on the page. I was also hoping Cyborg would get his own story but he's introduced here. Vic's just kind of there and no one seems at all surprised by his whole cyborg thing. No one even bats and eye! Oh well, I'm still looking forward to seeing what's coming finally in their team up with Teen Titans: Together which is due for release in the Fall of 2025.
I was SO excited when the last installment hinted at Starfire and now we have it!!! And now you're telling me the next book is Teen Titans Together??!?!?! I might just dieeeee.
There's a part of me that never wants this series to end because I enjoy it and love all the characters so much. The camaraderie, the gorgeous art, the action and adventure... woohoo. It does a wonderful job in slowly introducing us to each character while being a fun page-turner.
This is found family done right, y'all. Btw it's sooo cute how smitten Dick is with Kori hehehehe I need more pls!
👩🏻 cherreading mood: Got this from the library, brought it to a cafe and finished it in one sitting, then returned it. Like I couldn't even wait till I got home.
This is probably more of a 3.5, which isn't bad. As always liked the art, the concept wss interesting and I really like Starfire as a concept. But for instance the conflict to set up her and Kira's estrangement kinda had me like 🙄🙄🙄. I could tell some differences were there in the beginning but it didn't connect for me to be 100% convinced. Also in any other universe I'd be all over the Dick x Kory pairing but here I kind of wanted it to be Kory x Vic (Cyborg) but we can't have everything I guess.
Also what do you mean there's no Cyborg book, wait WHAT DO YOU MEAN 😭😭😭
Honestly, I only keep reading this series because I want to see how the characters are told compared to the childhood show I grew up with, you know, the one and only great Teen Titans. (Obviously, the one from 2003, duh.) Overall, though, this series is not memorable, nor much connection with characters. And the writing is cliche, overdone, and some panels are not well structured, plus could use a lot more panels to add depth and character development.
fell in love with Gabriel Picolo’s illustrations when I was a teenager and still love them now, many years later. absolutely would kiss the hand of the angel/mastermind at DC who gave Gabriel and Kami their own graphic novel series. 10/10
This series is far better when reading the comics back to back which is how I read them. I’d probably loose my mind having to read these at the time of their release dates because of how slowly the plot progresses but I still want to read these next one once it releases.
Felt like this one could have had a few more pages. I wanted a bit more in the interactions. Some scenes without words where the characters just connected. Felt rushed but was still beautifully done. Excited for the next installment.
