Randomly jumped into Exposed for a challenge and it was a pretty fun spy novella. I never felt bored while listening to what was happening or getting to know the characters. Then there's the fact that it is such a short novella, I never once thought things were being forced on my or moving too fast in any way either. I do still wish that it was a big longer just so I could enjoy everything even more but it was a fun book to dive into.
I'll definitely have to look out for the rest of the series.
The second in Codename: Chandler series. I LOVE this series. It's my favorite. This novella is just long enough for me to think, are you sure it's a novella? Which is awesome.
This is about Chandler before she had to Flee. Which was the first book in her series. So this was before all of that happened. Gives us a glimpse into what she had to do for her country and lets us into what the kind of person she is.
Trained for deadly tasks she is rushed into an operation to save a girl from a sex traffic ring. Some things don't start to add up for her and soon she realizes things are not exactly what they seem to be.
Full of suspense, exciting fast-paced action, and balanced out by some fun, some sadness and even a little bit of loving. I couldn't ask for more from a story. It has everything. Plus, a kick-a** heroine. I love it and can't wait for more in this series.
in this installment Chandler is sent to save a young girl from a human trafficking ring. little does she know there's a lot more to the girl story. the book is action-packed and highly entertaining not to mention a very quick read.
This is the second prequel to the Chandler series and I mostly enjoyed the story. While I quite enjoy a good sex scene in a book when it fits the story I thought the very gratuitous sex scene towards the end was a bit much and was unnecessary.
My biggest issue though was the awful narrator, Angela Dawe, who delivers each sentence like an instruction or an order in a very staccato fashion. And she reads it so slowly I had to speed it up which made it seem like she was shouting or barking instructions. Adding her to my "narrators to avoid" list. Sorry but I have to deduct a couple of stars for her horrible narration.
Another short prequel to the original Codename: Chandler trilogy, this one introducing us to how Julie and Chandler initially met. Like Hit, this was fun, well-paced, and hard to put down.
I cannot believe I hadn't read this series previously. Konrath is my favorite author, and yet these somehow eluded me. I'm so glad I finally started the series.
I absolutely love this series! I sat down read this book and refused to move til it was done. Chandler kicks ass and takes no prisoners, can't wait to read what happens next in the series. . . J.A. Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson rock!
Strong characters and creative situations make this thriller a must read! Fans of Konrath will enjoy this novel, and if you are not familiar with this author, prepare for a treat! I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.
Okay so after the first book Hit was so dreadful, Exposed was great! Thank you for giving us Angela Dawe back along with another great story full of action. I really liked this book a lot.
Another superb Chandler story. I'm loving getting to know how she came to be along with Hydra. This is the story of her & Julie who I met in "Three". I recommend reading Hit, Exposed, Naughty, and then Flee, Spree, & Three so you know the backstory. Looking forward to the next one
This Kindle freebie was a relentless roller-coaster ride of non-stop action, with only a short breather in the middle, when the McGuffin is revealed. The first half sort of reminded me of the teaser sequences of the latest James Bond movies with their increasingly unlikely stunts. I don't think any of the movie Bonds has ever done acrobatics in the undercarriage of a helicopter yet, but I guess a Bond could do something like that; or if not Bond, then Nikita, who is somewhat similar to Chandler as character. There is no time for characterization, but the entertainment value is never in doubt.
Konrath seems to be churning out hundreds of books in dozens of series encompassing different genres such as mystery, horror, thriller and science fiction, either alone or with different co-authors, some of which are himself under his different aliases. Many of these offerings have been free at one time or another, and I have gathered a sizable library of them this way. Yet I have felt reluctant to start any of them; somehow this prolificity has put me off.
I might have been wrong.
There may be a kind of calculated feel in the way this short piece is put together, but it works even if it is not exactly great literature.
This short work was action packed and it sometimes seemed like the action scenes went on a little too long; for every twenty punches thrown, maybe just a good left hook and a kick in the shins would have moved the story along a little faster with the same result. I did enjoy the plot, though, even if the story was very short. This was an audio book for me, so maybe the next one will be the printed version so it will be easier to jump ahead when the shooting and fighting drag on a little too long. As always, I enjoy Konrath's writing style; I've never read anything by Ann Voss Peterson before but assume she is similar to Konrath since the writing did not seem to change in style at all, and read like a Konrath-only work. I will have to read a Peterson to see how that is different from this collaboration.
In this novella length story, very special operative Chandler is given a mission to rescue a young woman from slavers. However, while carrying out her mission, she uncovers something even more sinister than human trafficking. Only immediate action will prevent disaster, and the stakes are about as high as they can get. Chandler is fantastically competent and improbably lucky -- and she needs to be. The action is practically non-stop in Exposed. Remember Daniel Craig’s opening sequence in Casino Royale? String several of those together with barely time to draw a breath between and you have the pace of this story. I quite enjoyed it. (Evidently, this is sort of a prequel to Flee, which now goes into my to-read list.)
Fun story, with some exciting superspy antics. Chandler amounts to a female James Bond and is an engaging character. I've not (as of this reading) read any of the main Chandler series (FLEE, SPREE, etc.) so this is my introduction to the character. I'm intrigued enough to check out the books eventually.
MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW:
Having just come off a binge read of Konrath's technohorror thrillers, I'm a little burned out on yet another black budget government funded renegade scientist conducting unethical and deadly experiments to create an ill-conceived superweapon. Also a little skeptical that such an operation would be so lightly staffed and underguarded as it proved to be. These guys never learn!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In "Exposed", trained killer for hire Chandler must rescue a young girl from the hands of some sex traffic network, or at least it's what they told her, get in and get out, just a easy job, but Russian secret agents and some South American mercenaries with license to kill join the party and chase the poor little and innocent girl (I wonder who she really is, if she is that innocent and why suddenly everybody wants to get her...)
Much better than the first installment "HIT", the story on this one is great (a stand-alone, you can enjoy it without having read "Hit") and this time there's only one explicit sex scene and not as hardcore as in the previous book!
Exposed was non-stop action. It is a thriller, which isn't what I usually read. Lots of violence, at times gratuitous. Gritty characters -- and a really badass point of view character in Chandler. This novella definitely got me interested in the other Chandler books. The close calls and plot developments really kept the book moving straight through. It was also a good book to share with my husband. Our reading tastes don't often overlap, but we had fun racing each other through this one.
Chandler's assignment is to find a Julia and to deliver her unharmed. The stressing of the unharmed part seemed slightly odd to Chandler, but as usual she didn't question her orders. Julia is carrying a secret that Chandler isn't aware of which changes her approach to the job. Will she be able to protect them both and come out alive?
I kind of enjoyed this story but also wished it would end all at the same time. Curious to see what another story is like before I pass a final judgement.
I liked it. Clever story. Great plot. Unexpected twists. Engaging characters. Lots of action. A very enjoyable read. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was I didn't see anything wrong in the first setup until it kept getting repeated that something was off. Maybe it was me, but it felt like I was being told rather than shown before the first twist. 4.25/5 stars
I didn't think I would like a character as delightfully flawed as Jack Daniels but Chandler is a robotic, by the book, killing machine who, on occasion suffers from being human. I thought this book was incredibly action packed and grabbed you from the start and took you for a heck of a ride. I truly enjoyed it and moved right to the next Chandler novel I could find.
This is a great book! You can read this book before Flee but I would say to go to know the characters better read Flee first. However, just keep in mind that Exposed is a prequel. I love J.A. Konrath and I love Ann Voss Peterson. Both write extremely strong and kick-ass female charaters which I love. Chandle definitely kicks some ass in this book. A must read and its a novella to boot.
I downloaded this unsure as to whether I would actually bother to read it. Two days later I had finished it.
This is a great little book that is fast paced right from the beginning. The action and suspense doesn't let up and the plot is engaging. My only criticism is that the love story contains some pretty cheesy lines but aside from that this is well worth a read.
This was my first introduction to the Chandler series. It has all the excitement one might look for in a story about a kick-ass femme fatale. Just when the reader thinks he has the story figured out, the plot will take a twist. I look forward to reading more from this series.
This book was full of action and suspense, not too realistic but quite entertaining. A superwoman type belongs to a super secret agency and is charged with finding and protecting a young lady. Unfortunately, everybody else has the same idea and most of the others are bad. If you don't take the story too seriously, you'll enjoy it.
It's a novella, a short novel, so I'll give it a short review. Fun, fast paced, exciting, action packed and engaging characters. Konrath and Voss Paterson gave us another entertaining Chandler story, this time a prequel to Flee, can't wait to see what they have in store for her in Spree.
