Lily wants to get home. Her friends want to get even. Lily needs a ride―a fire warning in Oregon has cancelled her train home to California. Her ex-best friend, Natasha, has offered to pick Lily up on her way back from Portland, though they're barely on speaking terms. As it turns out, Natasha's also giving a ride to Elke Azizi, the girl Lily got expelled from their school four years ago. Elke hasn't forgotten, and neither has Natasha. It's getting tense in the car, and it's not just about the past. There's smoke in the air, and with the wildfires nearby, staying on the road is becoming riskier by the hour. When Natasha and Elke decide to take a detour, Lily hopes it'll get them out of danger. She has no idea, though, what her former friends have planned for her. But as night comes, the plans change again when it becomes all too clear that leaving the main road was a mistake. Now the three of them are trapped in the woods under a burning sky, with no easy way out. To survive, Lily must depend on Elke and Natasha―but after all that's happened, can she trust them with her life?

I love thrillers and, in particular, young adult thrillers because somehow, they always have the feeling of an Aesop fable to me. Lol - 10 Hours to Go gave me precisely that feeling with its short storyline and perfectly placed dramatic setting!

Based on a couple of recently graduated from high school young adults trying to escape the blazes of Oregon and trying to get home to California. Our main character, Lily, feels hesitant to take a ride from people she has 'beef' with from grade school years ago - she doesn't really see another option. Trying to make the best of a bad situation, Lily is all for getting home to her mom under less-than-desirable circumstances until things start to turn a bit deadly with childish games amidst the roaring forest fires.

THOUGHTS:
- At less than 300 pages, what I loved most about this is that the characters have to push through immaturity to find solutions to work together to escape a dangerous situation. They've all made mistakes, but it's time to leave those things in the past. Forgiveness isn't necessarily easy but is worth it - especially in the face of more important things.
- Discussions surrounding bullying so take care of yourself if you've been through some of that! <3

2.5 stars rounded up.

Lots of unbelievable situations throughout the book, like for starters that a teenage girl would agree to a 10 hour car ride with a girl she hasn’t talked to in 4 years and wasn’t on good terms the last time they spoke.

Three girls, lost in the woods, almost run the car out of gas, get lost, get out of the car for no reason, encounter some scary man with a gun and they later worry if he made it out of the area alive.cheesy at times. Wasn’t good for me. All three girls were annoying or just clueless, reads not even at YA for me.

Thanks to netgalley and Sourcebooks for my advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to Sourcebooks Fire and Keely Parrack for my copy of this book. It’s about Lily, a girl who wants to get home after her train was canceled in the middle of some forest fires. Her mom arranges a ride for her with an estranged friend, and Lily soon finds out her friend is also giving a ride got Elke, a girl Lily got expelled years ago. She knows this is about to be a tense car ride, and everything is made worse by the risky road conditions. But her former friends have much more in store for Lily than she can imagine, and are holding a grudge for revenge that they won’t let go of easily.

Thoughts: This book read like a long boring car ride that I couldn’t get out of. There was one single plot point that I felt was beat to death, and it wasn’t even something relevant or interesting. The premise sounded SO good, but ended up being pointless and overblown. Most of the book was just the girls wandering around in the forest and arguing about the same thing from the past.

I kept thinking there would be something deeper in this book or a plot twist that would change the story. Unfortunately it was just straightforward and I disliked all the characters and their petty drama. I finished the book, but can’t say I recommend it. 2 stars.

Ugh sadly this one was a swing and a miss for me. I had really high hopes for this one and thought I would have connected more with. Being from Oregon and having friends who fled the Beachie Creek fires and survived

But right off the bat it just wasn't very believable for the characters. Why would anyone agree to a 10 hour car ride with their two bullies. Who still were completely awful to her. The amount of times I read friendemies when they are running from literal fire.

I thought the atmosphere was the best part of the book. Although confusing and disorientating at times.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.

This certainly wasn't a masterpiece of Young Adult literature, and quite frankly it was a total mess, but I'm such a sucker for girls bonding that I ended up loving it anyway. Strangely, the start of the story felt like a different book to the end.

At the start, the story felt like a thriller, as Lily is stuck in the backseat of Natasha's car it really felt like anything could happen, murder, torture, kidnapping. But after Lily is left alone in the woods by Natasha and Elke, the story takes an odd turn and the three girls actually start talking through their problems.

The last quarter with the fire should really have had the same tension as the first but, it just didn't. I didn't feel worried about the characters because the tone change told me they would be fine, and the ending was almost a little to cute, but of course I liked it.

Thanks to Netgalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire for gifting me an advanced copy. Below is my honest review.

This YA suspense is an intense look into the flames of friendships and the sparks of old grudges. As these three girls start their ten hour journey home, old issues between them come cropping back up, but what starts as a potential prank is quickly swapped for a situation much more dangerous when local wildfires threaten not only their path home, but their very ability to make to through the night.

While I enjoyed the writing and think the author did a great job pushing the girls through the dangers of the night, I didn't love this one. It felt like there was a lot of hemming and hawing about past grudges, but then when it came down to it, the reveal was just meh. And while the fires definitely added a lot of tension and some great situational drama, but there was some wasted potential with the dropping of the "other people are dangerous" storyline. We got this whole situation with the scary guy and the disappearing people, but then it just got dropped completely.

All in all, if you enjoy some good character tension and environmental suspense with a YA spin, then you'll really enjoy this one. I think the author is great and will definitely try their next novel to see their growth.

Other than being kind of slow burn read, it wasn’t horrible and the ending was so cute. Such a beautiful read💕 (and terrifying at points too.)

I love a survival thriller and this one definitely kept my attention and had me flying through the pages to get to the end. The drama between these characters felt particularly immature and unrealistic (holding grudges since middle school that led to them literally risking each others lives and then waffling back and forth between whether they would actually make up or not). I also feel like I didn’t get full closure on a couple of plot points and story lines which makes me feel unsatisfied. Also, classic YA in that I was constantly asking “WHERE are the parents??? But even despite all that I can’t deny I was intrigued to find out what happened in the end. Not my favorite book or my most resounding recommendation but if the synopsis sounds interesting to you and you wanna dive in to high school girl drama, that’s what you’re getting here!

  1/5

i was under the impression this book would be this tense mystery, filled with suspense and plot twists. but it was just a repetitive, jumbled mess. and the ONE plot twist was literally so, lame? boring? i don’t know.

the book was advertised as a mystery/thriller. the cover literally says, “lily wants to go home. her friends want to get even. lies upon lies. the way they got “even was in a way my 10 year old cousin would behave.

i was just trying to get through it. none of the characters were likeable and i felt so detached from them if one had dropped dead i feel i would have audibly went “eh.

i liked natasha’s prius more than i liked this story, and all the car did was drive. anyway.

also the girls were just annoying, like did they even use their brains at all this entire novel????

Thank you Netgalley and Keely Parrack for the opportunity to read the eARC of 10 Hours to Go!

I was a bit disappointed in this book unfortunately. As someone that was bullied in High School, The idea of purposely getting in a car with those awful people on a road trip was a strange concept for me to wrap my head around. I couldn't find myself liking any of the characters and the dialogue felt flat. The situations that spring up in the book isn't enough to save the story.

I will post my review on Netgalley, Amazon and ŷ

Lily is catching a ride home with her ex-best friend, Natasha. Lily is surprised to learn that Natasha is also giving Elke a ride home. Lily and Elke had a big falling out years ago and haven’t spoke since.

Things are tense in the car and tensions are rising with the forest fires in their path. When Natasha and Elke decide to detour to get around the fire, they end up going straight into danger instead of around it.

As night comes, plans change again, and now the three of them are trapped in the woods under the burning sky. In order to get out they will be forced to work together.

This book was a lot of fun despite being extremely farfetched. This was one of those books that you just have to sort of suspend all sense of belief and just roll with it. I don’t live far from the area that this book takes place, so I think that is why it was even more far-fetched. Yes, we have forest fires, but not really like what was depicted in the book, but it sure created some amazing drama, and I ate it up. I really enjoyed all the tension in the beginning of the book. I will say that the tension was resolved really quickly though, I think that I wanted it to last longer to create more tension throughout the book. It just seemed that the majority of the book was a drama not necessarily a suspense or thriller like I was expecting. I still enjoyed this read overall, and had fun with it, it just wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. The writing was well done and on point and the author did a great job of being descriptive. I felt that I could easily picture the scenes in my head.

This was an interesting story but just wasn't for me.

Right from the beginning, it just felt odd. I had a hard time believing the car ride and why anyone would stay in there. I found the girls' conversations tough to read and just not believable. Since I wasn't invested, the rest of the story just felt long and I felt disconnected. I wish I'd liked this one more.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

It was a mind-numbingly boring read with predictable moments of suspense. None of the characters were interesting and I honestly wouldn’t have cared if they had all died in the wildfires. Author had some good descriptive moments but overall I felt like this book was never going to end.

This book has you follow along with Lily, a girl who after visiting her dream college, needs a ride back home when her train is cancelled due to fires on the west coast. The ride she is offered is from one of her ex best friends who is joined by another ex friend as well. The three girls have tension between them and soon find themselves running for their lives as wildfires threaten to close in on both sides.

The book stays interesting from start to finish. It was a quick read for me, because I was so curious on how the story was going to unfold. It’s a rollercoaster of events, emotions, and flashbacks. It’s definitely a page turner that you won’t want to put down. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it! It’s a good, thrilling, wild read!

I did knock it down a star because of a few things. There’s definitely some plot parts that start and never finish. They didn’t really add to the story much as is, but especially that there was never any follow up on these plots. Which sucked, I would have definitely liked to see where a lot of those were going! Keeping in mind this is a work of fiction, there were still a lot of parts that were so unrealistic like it almost didn’t make sense. And there were definitely minor issues that aren’t really a big deal, but timelines and such didn’t add up. Like the ages, they were 12 at camp in 8th grade but now 4 years later they would be 16, but in the book they’re like 16 and seniors. Which I know is possible but definitely didn’t add up. Just a little nit pick. Also there were some minor like changes with the dialogue. Like stuff was abbreviated at times and wasn’t at others. Like at times when a character would talk it would be “cause or “cuz, which again doesn’t take away from the story just a nit pick to me. Overall, nothing I had issues with really took away from the book being a good, exciting read.

First off-did no one proofread this book at all?? The grammatical errors were so prevalent it was distracting. And look, I’m sure it’s difficult describing a wildfire differently every other paragraph, but it’s better than basically copying and pasting the same adjectives every time. I would get Deja vu reading certain passages. I don’t even know how the final copy went to print like this because it was SO BAD!

I saw this book on the new shelf at the library, and the summary was very intriguing. As someone who travels in Oregon often and lives in an area that always faces wildfires, I was looking forward to a tense YA read. But this book was just a frustrating slog that I almost gave up several times. The first part of the book hooked me, but the more it went on, the more laughable it got.

Look, I know the book is a YA read, and sometimes teenagers make bad decisions. But multiple bad decisions, while lost in the forest and surrounded by wildfires? Come on, that’s not realistic. Things such as: Getting lost more than once (especially after someone told you to stay in the car and wait for help) Bringing up an incident that happened in middle school and beating it to death multiple times in each chapter (especially while stopping to chat about it while running away from wildfires and barely being able to breathe?) My only silver lining can come with the hope that other young readers will read this and know what NOT to do in a wildfire situation.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for an arc of this book. All opinions are my own.

This was okay. I really liked the survival element and the different obstacles the characters had to go through. The characters themselves were a bit bland and didn't really have well established personalities.

The writing was otherwise fun, but some bits of dialog were somewhat unrealistic or flowed in an odd way.

I do feel like the plot was interesting, but I was waiting for the revenge element to have a bigger part in the whole story

I would recommend this still to people looking for survival stories or younger YA readers!

4.5 🌟

I bought this book. This was not an arc. But B&N sent it early and here we are.

This is a story about revenge, survival and friendship.

A story that takes off and never slows down.

A story that I think fans of No Exit will love.

The only reason it is 4.5 stars is there were some things that were slightly repetitive and the bickering between the girls was quite juvenile at times. Despite the fact that they were young, it felt “beneath them at times. But, I know how girls can be so.

I already bought another book by this author so go ahead and hit that preorder button! It comes out Feb. 6

Don't ever accept a ride from ex-best friends.

Lily, Natasha, and Elke used to be best friends, but a middle school incident turned them into enemies. When Lily is forced to accept a ride with them to get home to her mom, no one is thrilled with the arrangement. Natasha and Elke never forgave Lily for what she did and want a little payback.

I requested this because I love a good revenge plot, but that ended up playing a very small role. At first, I thought the revenge Natasha and Elke played out was not as devious as I wanted. When I learned why they wanted revenge, the prank immediately was too much. Middle school sucks for everyone, but the sheer hatred they had for Lily was overboard. As more of the story came out, I was on Lily's side, except for one detail. It was silly and childish, and the punishment did not fit the crime.

The revenge arc was short-lived, and most of the book was about the three girls trying to survive the wildfire. It was very descriptive and atmospheric, with the wildfires slowly closing around them. I think the sheer amount of misfortune was overplayed, and Parrack repurposed some plot points from her book Don't Let in the Cold. There was also too much making up and fighting again, interrupting the dramatic atmosphere created.

This will work for younger teens just starting in the YA thriller genre, but anyone with more experience will find it lacking.

Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire for the advance copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

2.7 🌟!! This book is so overrated!! Tbf the plot is kinda stupid, like why go on a 10hr+ journey with your enemies? By CHOICE. Though it was pretty good. I honestly loved the idea of wildfires and stuff I’ve never acc read abt them so it was pretty new.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Loved the premise, wasn't a huge fan on the execution.

10 Hours to Go follows Lily as she navigates getting home from visiting colleges when a fire warning cancels her train. She has to get a ride with her ex-bff Natasha as well as Elke, the girl Lily got expelled when they were 12. What starts as a tense and awkward ride quickly turns to one fraught with danger as the wildfires grow nearby. The three of them are trapped in the woods with fire all around them as they try to deal with their lingering hatred of one another.

I think a lot of teens and tweens will enjoy with book. It's dramatic and petty and vicious in the way tween/teen girls can be. It keeps you captivated as you're reading as the tense situations grow and it leaves you curious as to what is going on and who you're supposed to root for.

That being said, it wasn't really for me. I thought the girls were a bit too petty and dramatic, especially considering the age of the main characters. And, as someone who has read a fair amount of books in this thriller/survival genre, the twists were really predictable for me.

Overall, not a bad read and one I would recommend to students if they like survival stories with tense, dramatic, action with girls lost in the woods and a huge threat looming over them.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Fire and NetGalley for allowing me to read an eARC of this title.

Another nail-biting survival story from Keely Parrack. Lily just wants to get home to find out the results of her Mom's tests. but after her train was cancelled due to a wildfire, she accepts a ride from a former friend.

Natasha only agreed to drive Lily home so she could finally get revenge for the incident that ended their friendship. She brings along Elke, who was also involved in the incident 4 years ago, to help in her revenge plot.

The trip is supposed to last 10 hours, but there are delays due to the wildfire.
Natasha & Elke decide to leave the main highway, hoping to go around the delays, but instead they get lost

Now, with the wildfire closing in, the three of them must depend on each other to survive, but can Lily trust the others?

Lots of twists & surprises in this one. I will definitely be purchasing this one for my students.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Sourcebooks for giving me an arc in return for an honest review.

I would give this story a 3.5/5 stars. I've been in a reading slump and this book brought me out of it. It is a fast paced, easy, thriller read. The plot kept me entertained the entire time and something was always happening. There was not a lot of filler going on which I enjoyed. The only two things that I would day could be improved were that the characters in my opinion were pretty unlikable. They also mentioned the same argument every few pages which started to get really annoying but it passed about halfway through. As long as you can push through them having the same argument, this will be an easy read.

I would definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to getting a paper copy when it releases!

I received a free ebook ARC from Sourcebooks Fire via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Lily needs a ride home and her mom arranged a ride with an old middle school friend, Natasha. Lily’s 8th grade friendships ended horribly after the authorities got called to a big party. Now Lily is stuck in a car with people she doesn’t get along with AND there are forest fires that aren’t helping with their route home.

I wasn’t sure where this was going to go and the middle got a tad slow, but the end was very exciting and had me flipping pages quickly to the end. Part friendship story, part thriller - I’m glad I picked this up. A good YA read for those on the cusp of adulthood and overcoming issues from growing up.

Four years ago: a friendship torn apart by mistakes, accusations and jealousy that almost ends in tragedy.
Present day leads with the ringleader seeking payback/revenge with a somewhat well executed plan until a statewide fire evacuation throws the plan sideways.
Petty arguments, jealousy once again rearing it’s ugly head, Alison with crushed feelings, during the payback, the girls start to realize that revenge really won’t matter if they all burn to death.
Feelings of failure, claustrophobia, being caught in the dark woods, with no sense of direction, the trio must lean on one another, if they’re to survive.
Do the girls make it to safety? Are they able to let their past regrets stay in the past and move forward?
A fast paced adrenaline induced ride, maneuvering through mistakes, maturity, trust and survival.
Well played!

It kinda feels cruel to rate this book as low as I want to just because it is 1000000 times different than I thought it would be, but this book let me down so much. I thought this was going to be a scary YA thriller, and I suppose it was suspenseful, but it was mostly about teenage friendships. Now I usually don’t rate YA books poorly for quite literally being YA books (that would be silly), but it felt like this book was pushed to me as a really exciting epic thriller, and it just wasn’t. At all. It wasn’t BAD necessarily, but it wasn’t GOOD (which is my baseline for 3 ⭐️s).
