Finally getting exciting!

The first half was pretty slow but then it all got interesting!
I liked the plot twist, it was a bit predictable but I stopped hoping for unexpected twists a long time ago.

Cady is starting to grow on me and so is her bf/fiancee/whatever. The character that I absolutely love though is Jude and I'm starting to like him more and more! Ah yes, and let's not forget the drug dealer (Hijo?), I'd be really curious to see him more!

Still, the series is getting exciting and I can't wait to see what happens!

4.5 's

This book immediately jumps into the "fire"...literally. Lon and Cady are at Merrimoth's house on Dare's orders to bind him because he's been demonstrating usually strong powers seeming to evolve from his knack. Naturally, things go awry and Cady instinctively used her powers to help save Lon. During that process, she thinks she has contact with her Mother which understandably freaks her out. Needless to say, Cady has her hands full.

Well, one of the main things that I've said in prior reviews is that I wish we would get more depth in these stories and let me tell you, we got it in SPADES!! So much is going on with Cady and Lon and with Cady and her powers that it left me speechless...but a happy sort of speechless.

So Lon, right? Yes...lots of Lon and lots of sexy tension and sexy innuendos and YES, some good steaminess...it added just the right amount of spice but I could've used more. (not that I'm greedy or anything!) And Lon and Cady's relationship does move forward even though the in-laws come to visit and yep, that includes the hot mess named Yvonne. I won't lie...Yvonne showing up made for some disturbing moments but I liked how everything worked out.

And Cady's powers? Holy Cow....impressive and amazing and awesome and just everything...even weird and a bit creepy. I have a feeling this is just the beginning and there is a HUGE surprise at the end. (I had absolutely NO clue but you know what they say about hindsight!) Who knows where things will go from here and what's permanent or not but I have no complaints...well, I take that back, I do have one.

What about Jupe you say? Yes...we still get a lot of Jupe and definitely some moments that will break your heart. Cady and Jupe both experience some new feelings and growth in their relationship but I have a feeling things will only get better and better.

There's some interesting development in Kar Yee and Cady's relationship as well. From what starts out as a robbery at Tambuku to Cady coming clean, their friendship is definitely tested. Things are left open ended but I have confidence that they will find their way.

And a certain someone is back...but oh so different and Wow, definitely feeling some sexual tension there but not on Cady's side. She just gets to deal with the awkwardness. We get more of Hajo too which I really enjoyed. I'm hoping that he becomes a bigger part of the story.

We also get more of Mick but it wasn't enough to satisfy me. I liked getting the glimpses of his relationship with Lon but I think things are a lot more complicated and I hope we get more of that as well.

The realness of the family problems really appealed to the emotional part of me while the drama kept me intrigued. The fantasy part kept me guessing and the ending? Well, that just blew me away. Like I said earlier, I was not expecting it and it was sooo amazing!! Well done, JB, well done.

The next book, Crossing the Æthyr, is going to be very exciting...I can't even begin to guess what all will happen. I hate waiting a whole year to find out! :(

That ending!
Gah! This really has quickly become a favorite UF series of mine. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with Cady, Lon, Jupe and even a few others. I love the family dynamic and that Lon and Cady work together, don't keep secrets (for the most part) and actually talk to one another. I so don't want the last book to be it. I think I just might mourn the end of this series.

Well done Bennett, well done.

This is the third of a four book urban fantasy series and it's brilliant. The entire series is one of my favourites and I find it original and extremely well done. There is a mystery behind the main character, Cady's, magical gifts, one we learn more about in each book. This book has left us on a cliffhanger that changes the gameplan. I have no idea how the series will end but I am dying to find out. Strongly recommended for urban fantasy fans.

I’ve long come to realize that most of my favorite Urban Fantasy series feature a steady, reliable, loving couple or even a family: Kate and Curran (and Julie), Mercy and Adam (and Jesse) and of course Cady and Lon (and Jupe). It is a perfect way for authors to both remove all unnecessary drama and make us care deeply about more than one main character. This works for me every time, and while the three relationships I’ve mentioned aren’t all that similar, I’m equally invested in them all.

In Binding the Shadows, things are coming at Cady’s little family from all sides: Lon’s extended family is in town, his ex-wife shows up to make their lives miserable, two teens rob Cady’s bar and hurt her partner in the process, and on top of it all, a strange drug is being distributed around town and Lon and Cady must get involved.

Bennett achieved the perfect balance between action and character development, blending the two seamlessly. To be fair, Cady didn’t need much in the way of personal growth, she was quite amazing from the beginning, but by facing personal issues in Binding the Shadows, her own insecurities and fears, she’s shown that she’s just as mature as her (much) older boyfriend.

Jupe is still the highlight of this series. Without him, it wouldn’t be nearly as heartwarming or entertaining. I love his relationship with Cady and Lon, the honesty and affection that pour out of every page. With the addition of a few more secondary characters, Bennett completed a picture of a large, loving (if slightly disfunctional) family that will find its place in your heart between one heartbeat and the next.

The only thing I didn’t appreciate was the giant cliffhanger we were left with. I. Do. Not. Like. Cliffhangers! I understand that it’s all part of a larger story arc, but I think it could/should have been done differently. With a whole year between installments, cliffhangers are unnecessary and a bit cruel to the fans.

Nevertheless, this is a series I count among my all-time favorites and Jenn Bennett keeps proving her worth as a writer over and over again. Crossing the AEthyir can’t come soon enough.

All I have to say is Jenn Bennett is freaking insane! Oh, my god! BINDING THE SHADOWS is one of those books where you go excited to mental meltdown! It is so good and engaging and I am loving every new book in the Arcadia Bell Series.

Cady and Lon are together and strong as ever and happy with Jupe! In BINDING THE SHADOWS, there is quite a lot going on in Cady's life right now. We have a mystery to solve as usual, plus Lon's ex's mother and sister come to town to visit and she has to show them that she belongs with Lon and Jupe and Cady is seeing her mom's ghost? I'll stop there! Just lots of drama going on in Cady's life right now, but I'm loving every minute!

I gotta tell you, the ending I didn't expect at all! Came out of nowhere. It's like a three part ending. I cursed and hit things a lot after I finished it and am still suffering major withdrawals. Just hurry and release the fourth Arcadia Bell book already!

A copy of Binding the Shadows was provided to me by Jenn Bennett for review purposes.

*No spoilers for any installments*

There are those kinds of Urban Fantasy worlds that are intricately built and detailed that you can completely envision and understand it. But then there are those kinds of worlds that are so easily envisioned that they are almost real. Sure there's a demon realm and magicians and all sorts of other craziness going on but you could swear it's really happening around you, Arcadia Bell's world is just that vivid. It's a world that manages to suck you in and make you a part of it all. That's the kind of world that Jenn Bennett has crafted in her Arcadia Bell series.

In my experience, the longer a series goes on for the less likely I am to continue loving it. Characters get old, story lines feel reused... I just prefer stand-alones more often than not. Well, that theory gets completely blown out of the water when it comes to this series. This series has managed to get infinitely better with each new story, and Binding the Shadows is the best installment yet. The character growth continues building, the relationships continue to get stronger and more involved, and I can only sit back and marvel at the complexity of the story lines.

I was in complete awe by the last page. Jenn Bennett isn't afraid to take the risk and inflict her characters with immense pain and suffering but I believe that risky chance paid off big. These characters may be fictional but they struggle despite their magical abilities and it manages to humanize them. Binding the Shadows leaves you with a jaw-dropper of an ending that will leave you desperately wanting 'Crossing the Æthyr'. Urban Fantasy fans: read this series, it won't fail to enthrall you.

Binding the Shadows was an EXCELLENT book. And this is an EXCELLENT series. The first two books were among my top three favorite reads of the year they were released and I am positive this one will end up high on my list of favorites this year. This series just keeps getting better and better.

And now that I’m done gushing, let me get to my actual review…which will most likely contain more gushing.

Binding the Shadows is the third book in Jenn Bennett’s Arcadia Bell series. I absolutely adore the main characters in this series. They are, simply put, brilliant. Arcadia (Cady), Lon and Jupe are charismatic and smartly written. They make you laugh. They make you smile. They make you wish they were real people because they would be awesome to hang out with. In fact, Jenn writes them so well you feel as though they were real. They are flawed and vulnerable, witty and clever. And so smart.

How about we start with Lon. Lon is Cady’s boyfriend. He’s older than she is but you don’t usually notice unless it’s mentioned because they are an absolute perfect match. Lon is also an empath which causes him to close himself off most of the time. It also causes him to be a little closed with his emotions with those he cares for. So even though Cady and Jupe know where they stand with him, the actual words are not used. I think it is so cute how Lon and Cady, instead of using the word ‘love, say “you are my favorite person. I think that impacts me more than ‘I love you would in this series. Although there is one scene I may have jumped out of my chair and covered my mouth with my hand in shock. What I am saying is that this is not a book (or a series) filled with fluff or unnecessary emotion, but when the emotional scenes do come up, they affect you more than they normally would because of the nature of the characters. And there are a few great scenes in Binding the Shadows.

Lon has come some ways from the first book but the character who has grown the most is Cady. She is such a complex character yet you never feel confused by her. She is passionate and loyal. Vulnerable and strong. She is a magician and her magick powers are changing and growing. A lot. I feel we are just starting to see what Cady is capable of and I also feel that we got many hints in this book about what will be happening next and I can’t wait.

Jupe. He is Lon’s 14 year old son and is as adorable as ever. I don’t often enjoy reading teenaged characters. They tend to be dopey or off in la-la land somewhere or just too emotional for me to care. But Jenn writes Jupe in a way where you can’t help but love him.

There are two side characters that I want to mention quickly. They don’t appear in the book much but when they are on the page, they are so much fun! Hato and Priya. One is a drug dealer and one is…difficult to explain. But both are incredible to read and always manage to put a smile on my face. I really hope to see more of them in future books.

The story in Binding the Shadows is gory and awesome. Big things happen. That’s all I’m going to say.

Now, let me fill you in on a little secret. I was so excited about this book that I sat down to write my review when I still had about fifteen pages to go. I wrote it all gushing and woo-hoo-ing assuming I would enjoy the way the book ended. Well, when I finished writing the review I sat down and finished the book and let me tell you HOLY FRACKING HELL!!! THAT is how you end a book! My jaw hit the floor and my eyes were big as saucers. I even read it twice to make sure I read it properly. Then I did what I KNOW each and every one of you will do. I FREAKED out! I totally completely ‘mouth-gaping-open-eyes-bugging-out freaked out in the very best of ways. What an ending!

Overall, I adored this book as you can tell from the little heart beside my rating. The pacing of the book is perfect. And Jenn’s voice is superb. I love her writing. Love it. The world, where human-demon offspring live among us and are marked by halos which show us that they have a knack (special ability), is unlike anything out there. This is definitely a book and a series to check out.

Every time I pick up a new installment in a series I automatically expect it to be better than the last; and even though there have already been plenty of books this year that have fit that description, Binding the Shadows is their Queen. This novel is larger-than-life, full-to-the-brim, jump-off-the-page, made-of-awesome good. I loved this series before but I am infatuated with it now! If you haven’t discovered Jenn Bennett you well, should get on that but, if you have and haven’t pre-ordered Binding the Shadows yet what the heck is WRONG with you!?

The characters in these books are absolutely stellar; every time I come back to visit them, I feel like I’m returning home. They are just such a great bunch of people! On top of Cady, Lon, Jupe and Kar Yee; we also get to spend some quality time with the Giovanni’s and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed them. I guess maybe we bonded over out mutual hatred of Yvonne? Yes, the ex wife and the “new girlfriend finally meet in this installment and things go exactly as you’d expect them to absolutely terrible! In spite of all the chaos that happens in this book, and I do mean chaos, I loved that Cady and Lon’s relationship actually grew stronger. And Jupe, I mean, how can anyone not love this kid?

The main plot is relatively simple; it’s what’s happening on the sidelines that makes this book so interesting. In a lot of ways this story felt like a stepping stone, or a point of no return. Cady’s been working so hard to carve out a normal life for herself but unfortunately, her old one is finally catching up with her and no matter what she does, she can’t outrun her past this time. Arcadia is either going to have to embrace the changes that are upon her or get buried by them because she’s in too deep to be able to turn back now. I loved the sense of urgency and all the build-up in this book; it made for one heck of an intense read. The wait for the next installment is going to be pure agony. So many questions, and so few answers! Gawd!

I’m going to keep this review short because nearly everything I want to say about this novel is a spoiler is some way, shape or form. I guess that’s what happens when you weave a killer story the way that Jenn Bennett does! Arcadia Bell is one of my all time favourite Urban Fantasy heroines and she does not disappoint in Binding the Shadows. Magic, mayhem and romance collide! But watch out for the cliffhanger because it’s a doozy.

Talk about cliffhangers!!! OH MY GOD!!!!

I had my suspicions but as Jenn Bennett usually does, she wipes those suspicions away and waits until you least expect it, then pounces!!!

Cady is becoming more powerful in this book and we find out some of her magic ways and where they came from... However, we don't expect the things that happen...

A few stories going on, an elixir is being sold, one that enhances knacks and a couple of young demons who are high on this elixir are robbing places, including Cady's bar. Lon and Cady track down the dealer and when we find out who this is, it's another shocker!

Yvonne comes into the picture (Lon's ex wife with a knack that is extremely powerful, especially when she transmutes) and this side story goes off on another route...

Then as we draw towards the end, my suspicions from earlier on come alive and smack me right into my already gaping mouth! Woah!!!!

All I can say is "Thank God I have the next book"...

Jenn Bennett, I hate you so much right now!

Gah. Like, for reals. How am I supposed to write my own book when I can't get Lon and Cady and Jupe out of my head. And that ending. Woah. Totally didn't expect that!

*deep breath*

I love Lon.

Actually, I think I'm going to end this "review" right there. That's all that needs to be said.

Lon.

P.S. Okay. I'll add more. If you like urban fantasy, and you're not reading this series, WHY NOT? It's the best UF out there. The characters are real and fantastic, and I feel like I know them better than I know MY characters. I LOVE them! You'll love them, too. So, really, go buy KINDLING THE MOON right now. You won't regret it!

P.P.S. Jenn, you need a beta reader for book four, don't you????? I'll be the best beta evah, I swear!

Good plot with multiple story threads adding complexity to the characters and their relationships. Plus the the plot thickens! Book 2 had the best mystery, but BtS is focused on the character and preparing for book 4, the series conclusion. Binding the Shadows ends with a cliffhanger. It's going to change motivations, add higher stakes, and I'm anxious to read how Bennet will resolve everything.

Next up: (book 4 and final book)

Out-of-print! Very expensive mass paperback - $19 Amazon only! Used books cost from $9 (my ordered copy) - $138+. If you see this book at a used book store, get it! If you have it, keep it!

5 stars! This is by far my favourite book in the series, and that ending was amazing!

“You're my favorite person, you know...you're my favorite person, too.

I adore Lon, Cady and Jupe and I love them more with each book. After the way this one ended I'm seriously scared to see how this series turns out but I have no doubt I'll love it. There's only 1 book left, I almost don't want to read it, I desperately don't want it all to end.

This series was something I found on Scribd, I'd never heard of it before I started my subscription but I'm so glad I found it. It's a real hidden gem.

Renegade mage and bartender Cady Bell has had a rough year, but now the door to her already unstable world is coming completely unhinged.

This is the third book in the Arcadia Bell series and I liked it just as much as the two previous books. The bar is robbed while Cady and Kar-Yee are there by earth bounds who are wielding some extra suped-up powers, so there is the whole mystery to solve there. Then if that wasn't enough, Cady meets Lon's ex-in-laws who are still a big part of Jupe's life, Of course Yvonne (Lon's ex-wife) ends up showing up, and Cady gets asked by Yvonne's mother, Rose to do something unexpected.

The relationships between Cady, Lon, and Jupe continued to grow in this book and I still love the family interactions between them. The biggest negative is that there is a fair amount of swearing in this series. Unless it's constant, I can skim over and ignore most of it, but certain types of swearing I have a harder time ignoring. Swearing with God's name bothers me and this series has a lot of that.

This book ends in a huge cliffhanger and it's after something horrible happens and we find out something important, but - at least for me - not surprising. Needless to say I started the next book immediately.

LOVED. This series gets better with each book, and I am so happy to say it remains one of my most favorite UF series. Seriously, if you are a UF fan, you NEED to be reading this series!! Binding the Shadows left me feeling deeply satisfied with the character development and relationships further built upon between Cady, Lon and Jupe. Further, the overall story was very engaging, and the ending is one of those kind of cliffhangers that leave you dying for more. Arcadia fans are going to LOVE this book!!!

Bionic juice is making Earthbounds' knacks powered up. Lon's ex-mother-in-law and ex sister-in-law are coming for Christmas. Yvonne (Lon's ex-wife) is also showing up. Priya (Cady's Hermeneus spirit) returns as a boy. And on top of that, Cady's power is acting up, she is not feeling herself lately, and her evil mother might still be alive ...

---------------

The third book in Arcadia Bell opens up with an action scene -- with Cady and Lon trying to 'talk' to Merrimoth, and it doesn't end well. After that, the story just keeps on rolling. I am enjoying it IMMENSELY. There are so many things I love about this one

1) Cady's new power and the twist with her Mom

I am always up for something new in regards of a heroine's power in urban fantasy/paranormal series. Because it keeps the series exciting. I think the twist about Cady's mother's plan ( is frickin' scary and I can't wait to read how their showdown is going to be.

2) The bionic juice plot

I find this pretty freaky! Although the man behind it all couldn't be more cliché ()

3) JUPE JUPE JUPE

I just heart this boy so much. The part where he begs Cady not to leave just breaks my heart

4) Cady's decision

I truly appreciate that Cady tells Jupe first about her plan (of leaving). Most times, a hero or heroine just leave because they think it's the best, it's the way to protect people they love. It's a plot that I find boring after awhile. They need to gather resources with friends and family instead of going martyr or acting like lone-wolf all the time.

5) Hujo

This drug dealer friend of Cady is an amusing character. I want more of him, please?

6) Kar Yee on drugs

... is hilarious! *grin*

7) Lon's ex-in laws

While at first, Rose (Yvonne's mom) is acting annoyingly -- I am actually welcoming more family members from Lon and Jupe's side. I know that Yvonne is written as this manipulative b*tch but her interaction with Jupe and her confrontation with her own mom and sister is actually a delicious drama.

There are other plots of course that keep the momentum up and makes way for book #4 (). But I think one of the biggest is the one in the end... which actually why I can't give this higher.

CLIFFHANGER ENDING IN FICTION IS EVIL EVIL EVIL!!! .

Now I have to wait A YEAR to know

Although I enjoy this series very much, there is something that makes me love it even more-Cady and Lon's relationship. There are no love triangles, threesomes, moresomes, and what have you. No lying, cheating, or possibly two faced traitorous ex coming back into the heroine's life. Not that I have anything against them, b/c I have and do continue to read those, it's just refreshing for me. I love the fact that Lon's powerful in his own right and is given that sense of equality with Cady; that he feels like just a regular guy trying to do his best to be a great father to Jupe and partner to Cady-he keeps them grounded and gives both of them strength, stability, but most of all love. So of course I ADORE HIM.

Cady is such a wonderful character, I love that she's gaining confidence in herself with Lon and Jupe. That her yearning for family is being fulfilled by these wonderful people who always make her feel loved and cherished. In this book she's going through many changes; her powers are evolving, Priya is back, Mother Dearest is making her presence known, and she's getting to meet the in laws. There were several threads going on but I jumped with glee when at last a detestable character is finally dealt with. Cady goes through some tough situations, but her family won't let her face them alone.

I'm very intrigued and as soon as the next book is out, IT SHALL BE MINE! For now I think I shall go and pick a bone with Mrs. Bennett about that humdinger of a cliffie. She has some 'splaining to do.

The Arcadia Bell series works on two levels, both as a series with grand, sweeping plot points, and within each book, with the more intimate moments between characters. The cross series action is interesting, but not a motivating factor for me. It’s the personal bonds, the interactions between Cady and Lon and Jupe, that have me excited to go from one book to the next.

And in that regard, BINDING THE SHADOWS more than delivers. Lots of Jupe time, charming and hilarious and awkward as ever. Lots of relationship growth for Lon and Cady, meeting the “in-laws and slowly integrating two independent lives into one family. Even the action in this book has some “up close and personal moments, where the general mystery that Cady is trying to solve comes home to roost on her doorstep. And it’s those close to home, boots on the ground moments that I really loved. The threat of Cady’s origins and ever growing magic is intellectually very cool, but those events don’t feel like they’re growing from Cady’s efforts (they often just appear at moments of high stress), so I’ve always felt a little removed from that part of the action.

But regardless of whether you’re looking for action or character, the ending of BINDING THE SHADOWS covers both sides of the story. As magic bleeds into Cady’s relationships, I’m looking forward to seeing the Moonchild faced head on.

Sexual Content: Kissing, references to sex and prostitution.

Dare is now officially an asshole. If he had been doing things out of the goodness of his heart it would be different. But he's not. He's an asshole and now we know why his son Mark is such a tool.

In this latest installment, Dare's blackmail backfires and Cady basically tells him to fuck the hell off. His lies are incredible.

Whilst Dare is a thorn in her side, Cady has bigger issues. Issues like Lon's ex-wife waltzing in with her bloody allure knack. And, Cady is coming into her own power and it's pretty fucked up. Some of it is physical.

Her reaction to a new addition - what the fuck is that behind me?

Yes, Cadybell is not exactly human but what is she? NO one knows except her dead mother. Wait, her mother's not dead?

Things just got a lot worse. Without giving spoilers, basically Cady's fucked up shit creek without a paddle (or boat). What to do?

This was a fast and enjoyable read. A 3.5 star for me. I guess the shiny newest of the series is starting to fade. I still like it and specifically the twists, but I can't really say it's a 4 anymore. Off to the next book! Recommended for PNR who enjoy drama and crazy shit constantly happening.

Well I just finished up all three (and a half) of the Arcadia Bell books by Jenn Bennett (Kindling the Moon: An Arcadia Bell Novel, Summoning the Night: An Arcadia Bell Novel, Leashing the Tempest and Binding the Shadows (Arcadia Bell)) and I completely agree with other reviewers who said that the series got better with each book - and this one, wow.

In Binding the Shadows we get to see Cady begin to discover the pluses and minuses associated with her moon child powers and we find out something really cool about them as well. Plus, just when Cady finally feels like she's gained a family of her own, the bad seeds from her own and Lon's families step in to threaten that.

My favorite parts of the previous books have been the parts with Cady and Jupe and Lon. One thing I loved about Cady and Lon's relationship this time around (aside from some really nice steamy moments) was that Lon's knack meant that Cady's fears never turned into big misunderstandings - there was plenty of angsty stuff without that - so that was a nice change of pace for someone who reads a lot of paranormal romance (PNR is synonymous with dark and angsty relationships.)

I was prepared for the cliff hanger-ish ending, so I was okay with it but... I am really looking forward to finding out what happens even if I am not looking forward to waiting until next Spring to see what comes next.

Second review after second read-through, October 12-15, 2016:
I will write a new review, but I HAVE to read book four first. ;-)

First review after first read-through, October 15-16, 2013:
This third book in the Arcadia Bell series was a solid five-star read for me. It was amazing! I was really wowed by this fantastic story. :)

It got off to a fiery beginning (literally! Cady and Lon were in a house on fire, lol!) and never lost that pace. I loved it!

One of my favorite parts was on page 69, when Cady was thinking about Jupe and the car she and Lon got him for his last birthday. I could have told them that buying Jupe a fixer-upper would be a bad idea, but they didn't ask for my opinion. I adore the kid, but I so knew he'd be gung ho and go overboard. :)

The ending had me practically in tears of frustration. Cady was with a healer, and found out She was too hurt to talk, though, and the book ended with her about to go under so she could be worked on! I was so upset! I don't want to wait until May to find out what happens next! I need to know now! Argh!!!

Anyway, I really loved this third installment in the Cady Bell series. I plan to add the books to my collection so that I can read them again and again whenever the mood strikes. :)

Some series meander along and some just get better and better. This is one of the ones that just keep getting better.

Cady is trying to come to terms with her increased Moonpower, but something just isn't right. Jupe is fabulous and Lon is delicious when a magical crime wave hits Morella and even the Tiki Bar is robbed, and its right before Christmas.

Cady & Lon are on the case as to why the kiddie robbers have suped up knacks that should be impossible. Added to that Lon's in-laws are coming for Christmas and Cady is stressed out even more when she thinks she's seen her mother, who is supposed to be dead.

Of course, Cady & Lon solve the case, but the dead bodies are piling up and even a reincarnated Priya isn't able to assist Cady as much as he'd like.

And then there is the cliffhanger and lots of questions left hanging.

Can't wait for the next one.

Things pick back up with Book 3 in the Arcadia Bell series. Arcadia investigates a mystery potion that is intensifying the skills of Earthbound demons, contributing to crime and general chaos. Her own abilities are expanding, which raise questions about what really happened to her parents when they crossed into the demon plane at the end of Book 1. Meanwhile, the extended family arrive to celebrate the holiday, which Jupe's deadbeat mom decides to crash. The characters and relationships are the strongest elements in the series.

If I'd read this when it came out last May I'd likely transform into a demon myself. Thankfully for my quaint little neighborhood, I'm very much still human as I've got an ARC of Book 4 right beside me. So far, however, this has been the best book in the Arcadia Bell Series. Not only were my emotions flailing all over the place, but I fall deeper in love with Cady's family every time I read about them - Lon and Jupe, by the way. Moreover, this novel incorporated the previous mysteries quite cleverly, setting up for what promises to be an explosive conclusion. And, Lon Butler, do the female population a favor and get yourself cloned. I'd like one of you very, very much. ;)

4,5 stars

All I can said is....what a ride... what an emotional roller coaster ride! The book start with a BANG and end with a BOOM. Warning first, its kinda end in cliffhanger of sort and this book can't be read as stand alone. Better to start with the first book, Kindling the Moon.

CW/TW first, contain very detailed graphic violence. Your mileage may varies, but consider I've warned you :P.

What I said with the book start with a bang, it's quite literal. Something malice make Earthbounds demon's knack (aka supernatural ability) amped up, and its come to Arcadia "Cady" Bell, sassy magician, and her Earthbound boyfriend, Lon Butler to solve it. But what make Binding the Shadow for me is way way better compared to the two previous installation is I feel that Bennett already find her writing tempo and ho boy, she didn't give Cady a rest. Problem after problem come to our girl, it make me feel almost sorry for her. But, despite all her predicaments, Cady still going forward. Sure she have her mental breakdown, but I like that its make her feel humane. I mean, you can't go all badass and asskickin' everyone. Human have limits, and so do Cady. Cady is not sure of what she is -with her Moonchild ability- and to add cherry on top of her problem her mothers might be alive and want to continue her megalomaniac plot.

The family drama with Lon's in laws might be too drama for some, but I quite surprised to see that I kinda enjoyed it. It's not that I liked to see Cady squirming when she met Lon's mother in laws from his previous marriage with his ex, Yvonne, but what I like is the dynamic. Rose sure can be intimidating, but I'm glad her other daughter, Adella is very welcome to Cady. In the end, the in laws come to Cady side and they know that Yvonne is beyond saving. Poor Jupe, though. He's still hyper and motormouth, but it's apparent he want his mother to back to him. Bennett show that sometimes it's us who choose what kinda of people that we want as a family and Jupe clearly want Cady to be his family.

I won't tired to said that I really loved Cady-Lon relationship. You can said Lon is quite a "catch" for Cady. He's hot for a 40 something guy (despite his pirate mustache, heh), successful photographer and have a knack that come in handy. But what make me like him is, he's so supportive of Cady. Sure he grunt, angry when Cady seems to danger herself again, but he support her. I like that even Cady is a UF heroine protag, she didn't push Lon and go "nah, I can solve everything. By myself." She let Lon help her, and she help him back. A very healthy and sexy romantic relationship is what I loved the most and Bennett sure can deliver.

Like I said with the book end with a boom, yep, Binding the Shadows have cliffhanger. This book also have one petpeeve of mine with , but this is one pet peeve that I willing to let it pass. The mystery of the substance that make demon's knack amped up might not be too mysterious, since the plus point of this book is how Cady's relationship with people around her work. Also, did I mention that Priya is back. And he's a boy. Also snarky. I like this version of Priya though, lol.

With the end left hanging like that, of course I will proceed into book 4. Good thing, I already have my copy ;).

The Arcadia Bell series has always been excellent and tightly paced, but Binding the Shadows takes things to a whole new level. The story, the mystery, the characters, the revelations... everything is amped up to 11 here and coupled with a killer ending. Jenn Bennett has definitely cemented her status as one of the most talented writers in the Urban Fantasy genre. If you are a fan of Cady and Lon, you must pick up this book immediately. If you haven't read any of this series, what are you waiting for?!?

Cady is put through the ringer in this book; she goes through so much and grows exponentially. She has to face issues with Dare and the Hellfire Club, a burgarly at Tambuku, uncertainity with her parantage and her Moonchild powers, and a deepening familial connection with Lon and Jupe. Poor girl never gets a down moment. She does her best to keep her head above water and tries to do the right thing, but she is constantly weighed down by her secrets and keeping those she cares about out of harm's way. Long-time readers will have been waiting for a confrontation between Cady and Lon's ex-wife and, trust me, you won't be disappointed. Though I love all the characters in this series, it's really Cady that makes them pop and I love seeing her interact with everyone. She is such a complex character and I can't wait to see how her fate plays out in the next book.

Lon and Jupe were wonderful in this book. Lon is always there to support Cady and they have true respect and love for one another. Every girl deserves a Lon Butler in their life! I've never been a fan of facial hair, but the devilish Mr. Butler makes me re-think that. Jupe is absolutely hilarious and I think his role gets better in every book. He has grown so much from the debut and is becoming an integral and needed part of Cady's life. I love the quiet moments between the three of them; they feel so real.

The minor characters were also completely "on" in this novel. Hajo makes another intriguing appearance and I would love to know more about him. Bob and Kar Yee are very funny together, and we finally meet Jupe's grandmother and aunt as well as Lon's good friend Dr. Mick. This world is populated with wonderful characters and I'm looking forward to seeing who pops up in the next book.

Binding the Shadows has a doozy of an ending. The pace is quick and you're at the end before you know it, but holy moly, that ending! Ms. Bennett has some of the best writing and characters out there today and Binding the Shadows was a five-star read through and through. I highly encourage everyone to give this series a try today! I am eagerly awaiting the next installment through I think I will have plucked my hair bald by the time it comes out next year. I can't stand the uncertainty! Why Jenn, why?!? But seriously, do yourself a favor and pick up this book, well, today.

Thank you to Pocket Books for providing an ARC copy of this book! Check out our interview with Jenn Bennett and enter the giveaway .

I love the part of the blurb that says, Renegade mage and bartender Cady Bell has had a rough year, but now the door to her already unstable world is coming completely unhinged, because it's so damned fitting.

In Binding the Shadows, Cady faces many different challenges in all areas of her life. Professionally, her bar gets robbed by some Earthbounds with tricked out abilities and she's had it with Dare's (the head of the Hellfire Club) demands. Personally, she's about to face the in-laws (Lon's former mother-in-law and sister-in-law), her Moonchild abilities are strengthening (which excites and scares her), and her relationship with Lon and Jupe is closer than ever.
"Show me what's wrong and we will fix it."
This series gets better and better with each book. The family unit Jenn has created between Cady, Lon and Jupe is one to be envied. The action throughout each book is interesting (without a doubt), but it's the relationships that keep me coming back and wanting more.
"Sometimes you do stupid things for people you love."
Everything changes in Binding the Shadows. There's a major cliffhanger ending, but it fit. It didn't feel forced or intentionally cruel. That doesn't make it any less painful though, especially when we have another 11 months to wait before book 4, is due out.

Things to remember before starting Book #4: (Warning: BIG spoilers!)

My interest in UF has waned over the years because for the most part (there are always exceptions) the genre has gotten repetitive. Kick ass heroine that everyone wants to f*ck, hot alpha dude who runs hot then cold, lots of angst. It's all very predictable.

Then we have Arcadia Bell. This is the third book in this brilliant UF series and I went into this one terrified for several reasons. First being the third book in a series is usually when the predictability kicks in and things start to happen just to stretch things out. Then there have been a few things looming in the background that I was SURE were going to come to a head in this book. They did.but not in any of the ways that I was expecting. This book blew me away.

I'm not going to get into the spoilery details. If you haven't read the series start now with book #1 Kindling the Moon. You'll be hooked.

I bow to Bennett's brilliance with this book. She could have gone several ways here with Cady, Lon and Jupe. It would have been fine. Interesting, Heartbreaking even. But predictable. Instead she flipped the whole thing on it's head writing a deeper story about family, relationships and the human condition rather than taking the easy way out. Every time someone tells me they need such and such trope to create tension/drama, I will point to this series.

I'm so completely in love with and invested in Cady, Lon and Jupe at this point. I've just never read this type of dynamic written so well. Their relationship leaves me warm and hopeful.

Jenn Bennett has upped the stakes for Cady and company in Binding the Shadows, adding new characters seamlessly while shocking us with new information that will spin this series on it's head once again. I can’t recommend this series enough.

All I can really say is.wow. Job well done.
