Red is definitely my color. Good thing, because in my line of work, I end up wearing it a lot.

Most people shy away from blood, but for an assassin like me Gin Blanco, aka the Spider—it’s just part of the job. Still, it would be nice to get a night off, especially when I’m attending the biggest gala event of the summer at Briartop, Ashland’s fanciest art museum. But it’s just not meant to be. For this exhibition of my late nemesis’s priceless possessions is not only the place to be seen, but the place to be robbed and taken hostage at gunpoint as well. No sooner did I get my champagne than a bunch of the unluckiest thieves ever burst into the museum and started looting the place.

Unlucky why? Because I brought along a couple of knives in addition to my killer dress. Add these to my Ice and Stone magic, and nothing makes me happier than showing the bad guys why red really is my color.

(ETA 6/4/13) Now with a fancy new spoiler section.

2.5 stars

I loved the Elemental Assassin series up until Widow's Web, I was really disappointed in Owen's character, so much so that he pretty much ruined the entire series for me. The only reason I decided to read Deadly Sting was because I enjoyed the earlier books and because I'm quite invested in Gin's character. Okay, I also read it because I was hoping Owen would somehow miraculously redeem himself. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. For me, Deadly Sting is the weakest installment of the series so far.

Deadly Sting takes place a few weeks after Widow's Web. Here's a brief rundown of where things are at:

*Both of Gin's enemies (Mab Monroe and Salina) are dead.

*Everyone in Ashland knows that Gin is the infamous assassin, the Spider.

*Ashland's criminal underground are gunning for Gin in an effort to become top dog.

*Gin is finally getting along with her sister, Bria.

*Owen and Gin have broken up because Owen was angry at Gin for killing his ex-fiancee, Salina.

I had a number of issues with Deadly Sting:

-The story was very simple and unimaginative. It was basically a hostage and robbery plot, led by new player, Clementine. It pretty much amounted to Gin taking down Clementine and all her underlings. There was no mystery, suspense or excitement.

-Most of the book was set in one night. I dislike books that aren't set over longer periods of times because I feel in such a short space of time that no significant or believable character progression and plot development can occur. And if the story and characters don't move or change, then what's the point?

-There was quite a few info-dumps. This has always been one of my main problems with the series but in the last couple of books, I felt like it wasn't as much of an issue. Sadly, there was a fair amount of rehashing and recapping in this one.

-Gin's dreams. I find it unrealistic that Gin is able to dream about past memories in perfect detail. It just really annoys me.

-Gin's character in regard to Owen. I like Gin when she's not around Owen or thinking about him. She comes across as very weak, pathetic and desperate when it comes to him. She lets him hurt her over and over yet she still fights for him it's quite off putting reading about a heroine who keeps begging for scraps of love.

-Owen. I dislike Owen A LOT. He's become one of my most hated UF heroes. At this point, I wouldn't mind if Owen was killed off. Actually, it's something that I would love to happen.

-Gin and Owen's relationship. I hate them together and I hope things don't work out for them.

What I did enjoy:

-The side characters (bar Owen). I love Finn, Rosaline, Jojo, Phillip, Eve and Xavier. They're such good friends to Gin, they never doubt her or look down at her for what she does that unconditional love and support is one of the best elements of the series. I'm still not a fan of Bria, though she's not as insufferable as she used to be.

-Gin is great. Well, except when it comes to anything Owen related. I love how she gets things done with little whining or self pity.

-The mystery surrounding the person who inherits all of Mab's money and businesses. There's the definitely the hint that said person will possibly be Gin's new nemesis.

-The McAllister arc was finally dealt with.

-Finn and Phillip The true heroes of the series.

Recommended for fans of the series and die hard Owen lovers.

**ARC from Edelweiss and Pocket books.

Note: I'll be adding a very ranty spoiler section (detailing why I hate Owen oh so much) once it's been released.

WARNING: This spoilery section will be ranty, repetitive and nonsensical.

Back to the great, interesting series I know and love!

I dunno how I managed to skip book number 7, but only when I was about half through this one did I realize that it's not 7 but 8.
I loved it! I kind of feel Gin evolving, not just in power (that's to be expected) but in her personality as well. And I like to see something different!

I dunno if I can get back to book 7, I got way too many spoilers... But still, it was fun and well, when the previous books were annoying because they kept repeating stuff from the previous books, in this it was helpful!

And maybe the most important thing, it made me so so curious about the next book! I can't wait to see who the next big "player" is!

What did I think of this book?

Well, I kind of like it and I kind of hate it.

To summarize:
Gin went out wearing pretty and met a she-hulk aka giant at the party who decided to rob the place.
Before she is rudely interrupted by she-hulk, she met her friends and ex-lover there.
To make things worse, she saw her lookalike and there's a fashion faux pas! *GASP*
Soon.. we hear " crack! crack! crack! " and the "party" started with more "crack! crack! crack!" & "pft! pft! pft!" & screams & bad jokes.
So our semi retired assassin turned back to be the spider to fight and rescue her friends and lastly "hulk-smashed"

And ruined her pretty dress. :-(

The Good:
- Didn't read much about the location of her silverstone knives. THANK GOODNESS!
- Didn't read much about how she prepare her food and yadda yadda.
- Gin gets to wear pretty.
- Gin knows that her friends will always have her back no matter what.

The bad:
- I didn't know bullets sound like "Crack! Crack! Crack!"
- All new lover looks like the ex.
- OWEN
- Gin constantly moping over Owen.

Oh Gin...

I mean... SERIOUSLY?
Bad-ass assassin who kicks butt and yet mope over a guy?
You should be saying

BUT NO....

This is so frustrating!
GIN...

OWEN..

I mean..

DUDE!!!!

I can't..

You know what?

Enough said!

Finn talks Gin into going with him to a museum showing of Mab Monroe's collections before they are sold. Of course, nothing could go smoothly for Gin...she runs into Owen, finds some personal treasures displayed and wouldn't you know it? The collection...and attendees are getting robbed by a gang of giants!

After reading Widow's Web, I had to read this right away and it was another book that I could not put down. Granted it didn't have quite the emotional drama that that book did but it did have the same ongoing issues.

The major difference with this book is that it followed a different pattern. Gin didn't get to plan and research her enemy...she was just thrown into the middle of things and had to figure it out on the fly and right from the get-go. Not surprisingly, it took almost the whole book for the issue to be taken care of.

I loved the ending and what happens with Jonah....karma baby!

description

Also, I loved the part at the end with Gin's personal treasure. I was hoping that was what had happened and it made it even better than it did. ~*~ There's hope yet...I just wish that Gin wasn't sooo needy about it. ~*~

Gin...

It will be interesting to see what comes of M.M. and I know it will be something good. JE just has a way of coming up with these amazing storylines that there's no way you can predict what will happen!

The Elemental Assassin series keeps delivering! I’m so in love. Every time I pick up a novel in the series I’m sucked in. I can’t stop reading. It’s full of action, suspense, and so much more.

Deadly Sting is the eighth book in the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep and this time Gin’s journey takes us on a fresh new take. Everything that happens in this installment takes place in one night. It’s overflowing with suspense and fast action packed scenes. Their is no dull moment.

Oh Man! Gin can never catch a break. I was/am heartbroken for Gin. The author showcases that assassins can have their hearts broken too. It made me feel so, much more for Gin. We really get to see something affect and hurt her. She’s been unstoppable and untouchable from the get go, but now she’s got to deal with emotions. As for Owen, I’m so not happy with him and how he handled things with Gin. Something is resolved in this novel and maybe they can fix what has been broken. Only time will tell.

As I said, the action doesn’t stop and in some cases, Gin is looking from the outside in, and readers get her narrative from the outsider’s perspective. I do have to say Gin is devious with McAlister and I loved how it was handled. He might come back and be a problem, but finally he is getting his comeuppance.

Deadly Sting is definitely a favorite. Well this whole series has been outstanding thus far and I can’t wait to dive into the next novel.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

My heart is heavy while I write this. Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series used to be one of the best urban fantasy series I had ever read. Up to and including Book 5, the author could do nothing wrong. I loved her writing, I loved her plots, I loved the setting of the story and most of all I used to love her characters. While I still love the first three aspects of her books, I have been losing respect for her characters.

First it was with Gin in Book 6 and her old flame. I didn’t like how she acted and kept things from Owen. But I got over it because she left her ex behind irrevocably. The next two books in the series have been devastating. Because I have just lost and lost any love and respect I felt for Owen.

I am disappointed in Owen. He realises how much he misses her when he thinks she might be dead. That just wasn’t good enough. It makes me doubt every sweet word, every promise he has ever made to her. A chance event like that shouldn’t be a major turning point for character’s emotions in a book. Because if it is, then it makes anything they feel shallow. Makes me, as a reader, doubt his feelings for her. Because what if that didn’t happen? Would he move on, find some other girl to settle down with, someone else to love. I love HEAs and fated couples as much as the next person, but chance events like that make relationships seem very fragile. That they wouldn’t have been reconciling if it weren’t for that single event.

And Gin. I love her. She is strong and keeps her head up even when she is knocked down. And knocked down she is. I could feel her heartache after seeing Owen with his date and I wished Jennifer Estep would find her someone else who can love her wholly and unconditionally. Yes ladies and gentlemen, a HEA with Owen won’t satisfy me anymore. I could never forgive him, even though Gin might and has. Actually, she doesn’t even think he has done her wrong, but it isn’t okay that he is so grieves Salina who was a psychopathic murderer but not Gin the vigilante. This constant tension between them because of her job makes me so angry. He wants her to change who she is, and that isn’t fair.

Throughout the book, Gin just hopes and hopes for signs from Owen but he disappoints her at almost every turn. It made me so sad to see her yearning for something from him. He doesn’t deserve her; she needs someone who will fight for her even when the going gets tough.

But no matter what, remember this: all that really matters in the end is protecting the people you care about, even if they don’t like how you do it, even if they hate you for it. Because I’d rather have somebody alive and hating me than dead and buried, with me knowing that I failed them.

Things for Gin haven’t been going so well. She’s broken hearted after Owen told her in the previous book he needed some distance and time to think. She keeps hoping that he would understand and forgive why she had to kill Salina, but after a month her hope has begun to dwindle.

Now Finn has asked her to be his date to the auction of Mab’s estate and even though she doesn’t want to go she does. But trouble follows Gin no matter where she goes, and Gin finds herself right in the middle of a heist, one that she has to stop by herself and save all her friends who has been captured.

I loved seeing Gin in action again. She’s such a bloodthirsty assassin and I love her for it. Despite being heartbroken she kicked ass in this book, and the fighting scenes were fantastic.

The drift between Owen and Gin seems to be bigger, and I was so disappointed with him in this book. I understand that what happened with Salina was hard for him to accept, especially his part in not seeing her for who she really was, but I still hate that he broke his promise to Gin. That he would never turn his back on her like Donovan did.

Gin’s friends were great as always, although for a majority of the book Gin was fighting alone, which I actually liked. The fact that Jo Jo and Cooper was on a date made my heart a very happy organ, and I can’t wait to see more of those two.

Oh and the ending with a certain prick of a lawyer - BEAUTIFUL :-D

Another great and action-packed instalment to a fantastic series. This series is a must read for all UF fans.

After the event’s of Widow’s Web I thought that maybe we’d jump into some relationship drama in Deadly Sting right away. But gratefully we didn’t. Instead we jump into Gin in a dress shop saving the day with Fin and getting plenty bloody while doing it. Feelings shmeelings we don’t need to talk about those.
“I have plenty of little black numbers in my closet at home, any one of which would be just fine for this event.
Finn snorted. “Sure, if you don’t mind wearing something that’s ripped, torn, and caked with dried blood. I couldn’t argue with that. Funny how killing people inevitably led to ruined clothes.

Gin needs a dress to be Fin’s date to an art exhibit of all of Mab’s works of art and eventually a reading of her will. That is where everything hits the fan and Gin is once again at the wrong place and the wrong time and has to save the day and most of the upper class of Ashland.

Think Die Hard but with a girl and in a museum instead. I liked the premise of this one and the enclosed space for the story. Gin is up against an entire crew and has to figure out what the real play is all about since it doesn’t seem as simple as just a heist.

There is a little time to talk to Owen and this is pretty much how that goes.
Owen: I need more time.
Gin: I understand.
Owen: I don’t know
Gin: I understand
Owen: I just don’t know
Gin: I understand.

Uggg. I was hoping that the speed bump in their relationship would add some character depth but for the most part they really stagnated here.

Overall though I liked the villain crew they were a little smarted than some of the other villains we’ve faced and the ending for the true bad guy was pretty perfect actually and intelligently done.

It is pretty clear that Owen and Gin will eventually find their way back to each other but we still will have to wait a little while to find out how and when. But plot wise this was one of the stronger books of the series.

Gin Blanco, Pork Pit owner and assassin, always seems to find trouble. This time it comes in the most unusual fashion. Gin is talked into attending a charity function with her foster brother and most of her friends...all of Ashland’s rich, famous and infamous have come out to see Mab’s art collection. The gallery opening isn’t really any trouble but the group of giants taking the attendees hostage and robbing them and the museum...now that’s definitely trouble. Accidently killing an innocent, that is down right abhorrent pushing Gin into action.

I love this series and have to say that I was a little hesitant after the Widow’s Web. Needless to say, I want Gin to find real happiness. I’m totally trusting Jennifer Estep to pull us through this love crises but I have to say I was a little disappointed with one specific hero.

Gin was fabulous as always, I really am loving her character growth and constant inner strength. Watching Gin do what she does best, out think the bad guys against insurmountable odds, always makes for a brilliant read.

Deadly Sting did not disappoint. Fast paced, action packed, thrilling adventure with fabulously witty characters and a totally original storyline, Deadly Sting kept me riveted to the pages!

I couldn’t resist another installment of Elemental Assassin—I need a regular supply of urban fantasy if I’m to be happy these days!

Estep continues to provide action-filled plots, consistent with the world of Ashland that she has created for our reading pleasure. Nevertheless, it’s the action between Gin and Owen that rivets the attention in book 8, as we wonder if these two star-crossed lovers will find their way back together again.

This time around, we see Gin doing the patient Griselda routine, while Owen tries to sort himself out. She’s not happy about it, particularly as it seems that Owen and his sister Eva seem to continually need her assistance to get out or stay out of the clutches of Ashland’s underworld. Owen is willing to accept the assistance, but not necessarily Gin.

Gin actually gets some self-reflection time in this book—time to realize that she does make very pragmatic, unromantic decisions mostly and that this may be hard for those closest to her to live with. But she certainly proves that she is a strong, independent woman—Owen may be “needing some space, but she continues to run her restaurant, take courses, spend time with her friends, and defend herself from all the opportunistic villains who want to take her down!

With her sister Bria and her pals, Jo-Jo and Sophia Deveraux and Roslyn Phillips, we are definitely getting into Bechdel test territory. Certainly they do discuss the men in their lives, but plenty more besides that. That’s what I like to see—a woman realistically surrounded by supportive women friends who are there to listen, support, and help when they can! More of this, please, Ms. Estep.

P.S. All the Southern cooking got to me--I ended up making Cornmeal Cheese muffins half way through the book so that I could concentrate on reading again!

This one was a lot of fun. I really liked that while the supporting characters were a part of the story, we really got a ton of time just us and Gin.

I need Owen to get himself together though. :)

This review will contain spoilers from previous books.

The book begins with a hilarious scene where Finn is taking Gin shopping for a new dress to wear to an event he wishes her to attend with him. The event in question happens to be a huge “gala exhibiting all of Mab Monroe’s fine art, jewelry and most treasured possessions, to which everyone who is anyone will most certainly be attending. (Side note: I absolutely LOVE and ADORE Finn and these books would not be the same without him.)
Of course, since this is Mab Monroe we are talking about, nothing will be as simple as a nice gathering and viewing of fine art. As it turns out, even dead, Mab still causes problems for Gin and co. and it seems we may never be rid of her completely.

The main conflict this time is in the form of a large group of giants that hold up the entire mansion full of guests and attempt to steal away with the house jewels. However, unlucky for them, The Spider is in attendance and has other plans for them.

This started out really interesting, for me. I mean, even I was curious what we would find in notorious Mab Monroe’s priceless collections. Though, things started fizzling a bit when most of the details, and a lot of the action, seemed to be “phoned in through a bunch of sneaking around, numerous overheard conversations, and a long running flashback that we jump into quite a few times. And while the flashback ends up being relevant like usual, this one seemed to take up a LOT of page space.
The majority of the book also happens within one evening, which isn't bad, but is very different from other books in the series. Now, don’t get me wrong, Gin still has lots of kick-ass time in which she deals out plenty of beat downs, and shows the bad guys exactly who is in control, I just got the feeling this could have been chopped a bit and made into a really nice, action-packed, novella and I would have loved it so much more. It may just be me, though. :(

Oh, and we must discuss dear ole Owen. He really disappointed me in the last book and I was hoping for some redeeming conversations/actions to occur this time around, but it seems we are only just barely scratching the surface on that subject. It makes me angry that strong, solid, loving, understanding, accepting Owen of old has seemingly morphed into Douchebag Donovan 2.0. He no longer accepts and loves Gin for who she is and has pulled out the super- judgmental glasses and gouged out her heart with them.
Does he not remember how wounded she was by that other jerk and the emotional wringer he put her through? Does he not remember all the times he tried proving to her how much he loves her for who she is, just the way she is? Doesn’t he see how hypocritical he is now being? UGH, you dumbass, Owen!
However, I will say that it did end a bit more on the redeeming side, though he still has an extremely long road back that is going to require some extensive repaving. I’m just not sure if it will happen soon enough. I even found myself wishing Phillip wasn’t so hung up on Eva, there, for a little while. Maybe he could have thrown his hat in the waters and got some jealousy to ring Owens bell a bit. Sigh, a girl could dream, right?

I am, however, very curious to find out who this "mystery" person is, and I cannot really say much on the matter so that I don’t spoil things for readers, but I’m thinking it could be someone we already know. Also, I’m ecstatic that a certain someone we all love to hate finally gets some payback, and I look forward to more glimpses of their punishment in the future.

Overall, this was a pretty decent book and I still eagerly look forward to book 9, Heart of Venom.

This is my favourite book so far in the series. It is non-stop action that had my pulse racing and adrenaline rushing.

Gin reluctantly goes to a gala function with Finn and it is anything but the boring, stuffy event that she thinks it will be. She runs into her ex, Owen, right before the place is held up and robbed by giants.
In Gin's own words: There was just blood, dead giants, and a lot of awkward pauses.

Love, love, love Gin and Ms Estep brings her to life with her talented writing.
My heart pumped with cold, steady rage, and I reveled in the blackness, embraced it like the old, familiar friend it was, let it seep into every part of my being until there was nothing left but me, my knives, and my sharp, bloody will to use them on every enemy who crossed my path tonight.

My emotions felt as tangled and twisted as the briars around us. And every move I made, everything I did to try to make things better, just stabbed another sharp, brittle thorn deep into the desolate wasteland of my heart.

I'm loving this series, and so glad that I don't have to wait for the next book to be released so I can continue my 'Spider' binge read!

Our weekly buddy read with the assassins at BB&B!

What a ride! We reached book 8 in the series, things should be slowing down, right? Wrong!!! No flat soda for us here - the bubbles are jumping and life is just as eventful, albeit unnecessarily complicated and dangerous, for our retired assassin Gin. She is on the outs with her lover Owen, for whom she already has expressed her love and thought she was loved in return... However, making hard choices where the first love of your partner is concerned might leave some strong, not so positive feelings in him... So, Owen is brooding and has not called or contacted Gin in a month and Gin is in a funk, to say the least...

Enters gregarious, charming, larger than life Finn, who is going to do his best to cheer her up, something he considers himself being good at:):):) I love Finn and his charming way with women! He is a smarmy dude after my own heart! But I digress... So, he gets Gin to buy a &10 000 dress, one of a kind couture, and takes her to an art and jewelry auction of Mab's loot, which is taking place at the island museum of art in Ashland. All the ton of the town is there, a variable who is who of high society and underworld bosses, all dressed to impress and bling-blinged to the hilt! This already is not Gin's scene, but on top of that Owen is also there!!! With a date! And she is wearing the same "one of a kind" dress!!!! Whaaaaaaat?!?!?! Bummer is right... Gin chooses to go wonder a bit, to get herself under control, and things go to hell!!!

This is where Gin turns into Bruce Willis from all the Die Hard movies and goes on a solitary rampage to obstruct the heist-gone-hostage-situation operation led by a family of giants. The starry event has become the perfect trap for all the rich citizens of the city and the smart giantess with a merry band of 40 or so disgruntled with their fates giants, are more than happy to take all the bling off of their hands... All the museum art is being stripped as well... The worst of all, the people Gin loves are all trapped in there as well and she is going to do anything and everything to get them back safe... Non-stop action ensues until the last chapter...

“I shut the security-center door, stepped over the giant’s body, and went on my merry, murderous way.

I enjoyed this book! Despite all the wonderful and bloody action, there is still the cloud of personal issues that has to be resolved between Gin and Owen, but alas, we don't get all the answers here... However, I have faith and also know that there are plenty of more books already published, which might hold our desired outcomes:):):)

Which leads me to say that yes, I will definitely continue with the series weekly reading with the best group of buddy readers I have ever known, and yes, this book was fun and a solid, worthy addition to the series. It never lost its action movie vibe and it was refreshing :)

Now I wish you all Happy Reading and may all fictional assassins be as goldenhearted as Gin!!!

This is the 8th book in the Elemental Assassin series. It was a decent book in this series, but again was a contained mystery of sorts rather than the start to a new story arc. It was a good enough read, but at times felt more like a novella than a book. The ninth book in the series is scheduled for a September 2013 release and will be titled Heart of Venom. Last I read Estep is contracted for 10 books in this series.

Gin is still on the outs with Owen following the events of the last book. Gin and Finn go to attend an auction of Mab’s treasures, when they arrive Gin finds out that a giant by the name of Clementine is trying to steal the whole lot. Somehow all of this ties back to Mab. Gin has to stop Clementine if she is going to save her friends and the city.

I was surprised that the whole plot revolved around the art/jewels being stolen at this auction of Mab’s. The story was so concise and straightforward it seemed almost more suitable to a novella. Initially I was thinking that this would be an introduction to a larger story and I was surprised when it wasn’t.

Gin has grown a lot as a character. She is learning to accept having people in her life that she cares about and who care about her. She doesn’t really gain any new powers in this book, but it focused on learning to exercise her current powers with more intricacy and finesse.

I enjoyed reading about all of the other characters as well. I continue to be annoyed at Owen for his childishness; he has really taken a step back as a character for me. Finn and Bria continue to be wonderful characters in this series.

There really isn’t anything new in this book that we haven’t seen in previous Elemental Assassin books. While it is a decent read I was surprised that there wasn’t a bit more to the story.

So while I enjoyed reading this book, there wasn’t a lot here that really excited me. It was very similar to previous books...except with less story. Additionally Estep continues to do a bit too much recapping in this book, this is something that she has done in previous Elemental Assassin books as well.

Overall this was a decent read, but in my opinion the weakest book in this series so far. There isn’t much to this story and it is more of a contained mystery than the start of something new and wonderful. I was left feeling like maybe this series is running out of steam. Gin is a great character and I enjoyed reading about her, but Owen remains pretty obnoxious. I guess I would recommend to fans of the series, but just don’t expect too much from this book. This series as a whole is highly recommended to fans of action packed urban fantasy.

To me this serie stopped when Gin killed Mavis, I mean she was THE villain of the story. I just don't see how you can top that. Now the books keep getting weaker and weaker, I don't understand.
What the heck happened with Owen? He was such a strong character at first, loyal, understanding of Gin, accepting all her faults and weaknesses... and now he's just an a**hole. Feels like he doesn't love her, there's no passion, nothing. He wouldn't fight for her, he doesn't get angry or anything either, it's so half-hearted. "I love you but I feel guilty, sob sob", why you little... argh!
And Gin is so pathetic, how come each time someone rejects her she's all like "it's my fault, I'm not good enough." For someone so strong she's surprisingly weak, no self-confidence at all.
I don't think I will continue on with the serie, sad but I'm going to pretend that it all stopped with Mavis' death, when the serie and the characters were at their strongest. Hate seeing them going down like this.

Weekly buddy read with the bloodthirsty crew over at BB&B.

The last book didn't end well for Gin. Sure the bad girl was dead and everyone was safe but the personal consequences were enormous. Gin's relationship with Owen hadn't been tested before. Not in any major way. Personally I don't count the little brush with Donovan in Blue Marsh as a test because he was never really a threat to them. But now Salina's death has driven a wedge between them that over the past few in-universe weeks has become the size of the Great Canyon. And the longer the silence continues the bigger it gets. Gin has some serious emotional problems and is deeply convinced that she doesn't deserve to be happy. This conviction prevents her from fighting for her relationship and leads her to suffer in silence. When she came across Owen on the gala that's the main setting of this book, her thoughts made me cry. This distance hurts her and thinking that Owen might have moved on makes her so miserable that the emotional impact on the reader is like a punch in the stomach. Personally I didn't think Owen had brought the other woman with him on a date because I think he has more honour than that. If he had moved on he would have at least told Gin personally. Owen has his reasons to want some space but this lack of communication won't solve his issues. But by his reaction to shows that he still loves her. Maybe he hasn't come to terms with Salina's death and Gin's actions leading to it but the connection is still there and that gives me hope that they'll be able to work through their issues.

From the things I said so far it would seem that this book is a straight romance and that the relationship angst takes precedence over the action. In terms of emotional impact that's true. But the biggest chunk of the book deals with a attempted robbery of the Briartop museum. There's a gala held in honour of the late Mab Monroe and on display are her many treasures. So everyone that's someone in Ashland is there. A perfect time to rob everyone blind! At least that's what a bunch of giants led by one named Clementine thought. The only problem is that the Spider is there and they had the stupidity to threaten the people she loves. I absolutely adore how she gets more bloodthirsty with each passing book but still retains her emotional vulnerability. And her great if rather dark sense of humour:

“Gin? Owen whispered, his face white and tight with shock. “Is that really you?
I grinned. “Isn’t all the blood a dead giveaway?

There was so much violence! So much dead! Gin personally keeps the Grim Reaper in business. She prowled through the giants like they were pigs for the slaughter. While wearing an evening gown.

Talking about gowns I have to mention Finnegan Lane. This guy scares me. He knows more about fashion and dresses than the average woman. At the beginning of the book he had dragged Gin out to shop for a dress and boy was that hilarious. And later when he was bitching that Gin has the same dress as Jillian I almost died laughing. But despite all of that he is still one of the biggest badasses in that world :) How cool is that?!

I really liked the closed setting in this book. The tension of an approaching deadline. The fact that the majority of the book develops in just a couple of hours. It's a nice deviation from the usual structure of the series. And it was pure pleasure to read :D

I still love you, Jennifer Estep. And I still love the Elemental Assassin series. But Owen... I feel like my longstanding and overwhelming love for Owen Grayson has suffered irreparable damage with this book. Which makes me both a little bit angry --and sad.

The following will contain spoilers for anyone who has not already read Widow's Web.

As the story begins, Owen and Gin are still apart, as he deals with the fact that she killed his ex-fiance. Nevermind the fact that Selina tried to kill his sister. Nevermind the fact that she was going to kill Gin and was obsessed with the idea of getting him back. Oh yeah --and let's not forget her big evil plan to kill all those folks with her big revenge plot. But still, he's off "thinking about things." For three months now. Gin is hurting (which I hate) but she is trying to soldier on.

Finn gets the bright idea to drag Gin to a huge party to showcase all of Mab Monroe's treasures at an art museum. He even talks her into getting a fancy new dress. But nothing is ever simple for Gin. First of all, Owen is there. With a date. Then the party turns into a huge hold-up as a group of giants plot to steal Mab's fortune for themselves. And Gin must find a way to take them all down before any harm comes to her loved ones who have been taken hostage. Kind of like Die Hard. In a red dress.

As always, the action was great. I love that Jennifer Estep is always coming up with new ways for Gin to kill people. While many of the last books focused on her ice magic, this book was more focused on the stone. There were tons of cool fight sequences and big stuff with Jonah MacAllister. Plus --a great setup for where the series is likely headed next.

If you're anything like me, however, what you really care about is what's happening with Owen. Sadly, this was the only part of the story that I didn't enjoy. Owen was one of my favorite characters in a series filled with amazing characters. He came around on the heels of weenie-toad Donovan Caine, who made Gin feel damaged and unworthy --and he loved her for who she is. He accepted her. And now, HE is making Gin feel small. And alone. He is indecisive. He is a wuss. And a stupid-head. And honestly, no matter what happens in future books, I question whether I can ever see him the same way again. Scratch that. I know I can't.... which really stinks.

Where do they end up? You'll have to read the book, of course. I will tell you, though, that it is not a fun ride. At least, it wasn't for me.

This all leaves me with mixed feelings at the end of the book. The parts that weren't about Owen were everything I have come to love about the series. I liked the plot, the villain, and the growing overall arc. But the romance.... fail.

...Another fantastic book by Jennifer Estep!!!

I think Deadly Sting has a slightly different pattern to it compared to its past companions, here we see Gin (I freakin love this gal) working her way through a hostage situation where things have gone terribly wrong, whereas I feel in prior books, Gin works her way through many situations because of one opponent or so...

This book, nonetheless, was just as superior as the others... I found myself turning pages and hoping... turning pages and praying... turning pages and holding my breath... and Owen, I love this guy so much, but he needs to get over the past!!! (still love you though Owen!!!) Fin is just as obnoxiously, adoringly, lavishly god-dammed handsome and cute as he ever was - lucky Briar...

Love the way this book played out, heart in my hands now and I'm looking to the next book for answers but also with a nervousness... we just don't know what's coming!

Deadly Sting is a very interesting addition to the Elemental Assassin series. You should all know by now that this just happens to be my favorite series. If you haven't well pay attention! ::grin:: At times it's a little over the top because Gin is a dual threat and powerful Stone and Ice Elemental who just happens to own the Pork Pit BBQ Restaurant, has defeated numerous threats to her personal body, and has tried to retire as the assassin known as the Spider.

At other times, Gin slips into a dreamlike state and has flashbacks about her time with Fletcher Lane who trained her to become an assassin and was later killed in the first book of this series. She also believes that there is something dark and dangerous stirring that will eventually take her down. We can only hope that dream does not come true and Gin can walk away into the sunset and finally find piece of mind.

Deadly Sting begins a month after the infamous situation between Gin and Owen after the events of Widow's Web. If you haven't read THAT book yet, please don't attempt to read this one until you do. Seriously. Gin is experiencing emotional turmoil and of course, Finn attempts to break her out of her doldrums. This includes taking her to a gala at a museum showing the stolen and collected goods of Gins' former nemesis Mab Monroe.

The cover to Deadly Sting, except for the lack of blood, actually does this book justice for a change because it is exactly what Gin looks like after having to fight for her life and that of her friends at a Gala she didn't want to attend in the first place. Yes, there's lots of bodies. Yes, there's a new villain named Clementine. Yes, there's even a reunion, or sorts, between Gin and Owen that leads to some emotional moments. One can only hope that after the ending of Deadly Sting that we can expect to see more of Gin and Owen in the near future since they are, after all, perfect for each other unlike that asshat Donovan Caine.

There are a few surprises along the way involving a possible replacement for Mab Monroe, and Gin's revenge against a certain lawyer who has been out to get her since she killed his son. Like I said before, Gin has A LOT of enemies that she's made along the way. All of them want the eliminate her and become Mab's replacement.

Overall, Deadly Sting is a fast paced book that leaves you wanting the next book (Heart of Venom) so we can find out what happens to Owen and Gin and who the next villain will be. Definitely recommended to those who love a kick ass heroine who takes no prisoners while protecting those she loves.

I really didn't like how things ended with Gin and Owen in the last book. I hated that Owen couldn't see how bad Selena was and that he held Gin's actions against her, even knowing how much Selena hurt his sister and friend. So when this book opened with them on the outs I wondered if they would be able to get past it. I was pissed at Owen when he and Gin first met up again. I couldn't believe the choice that he made, even if it was with a friend, he had to know better. In some ways I was a little happy with what happened to the friend, as it allowed Owen to know what he really thought about Gin, but another part of me was sad because they didn't have anything to do with anything and for the most part were forgotten. I am torn with the last conversation between Owen and Gin. They were able to talk about the whole Selena thing, but the core issue is still there. I don't know that there is hope for them beyond friends and that makes me sad.

I found it somewhat odd that for most of this book Gin was by herself. We did get the funny opening shopping trip with Finn, then a little with the others of the group. But for the most part Gin was on her own, doing her thing to save those that she loved and considered family. I missed how they all work together to bring down the bad guy, how the planning pulls them in and how everyone works to their strength.

I liked the flashback with Fletcher. I love how this character that died in book one is such a presence and even though I shouldn't, I love seeing Fletcher train Gin, molding her into who she is today.

I loved what Gin did to Jonah! He has been a boil on her ass for as long as he has been around. I agree with Gin that the repercussions of what he did and she did is better than if Gin did what she is normally known for.

I do wonder how the events of this book will effect her legend as the Spider and what that will mean to her everyday life. I look forward to reading more to find out.

Deadly Sting
4 Stars

When a gala showcasing Mab Monroe's possessions is the target of a heist, Gin Blanco AKA the Spider finds herself in the unenviable position of being the only person not taken hostage. In an attempt to protect her friends who are amongst the hostages, Gin sets out to discover the motives and plans for the crime and comes up against a foe who might just be the death of her...

It has been a while since I read the last book, but it is easy to get into the swing of things with Gin and company. The robbery caper storyline is different from the previous storylines and it is good to see Estep branching out in new directions. The final showdown is a bit of a mixed bag with some of the culprits meeting their end very easily and others battling until the bitter end.

Aside from the action packed plot, there are interesting developments in Owen and Gin's relationship as they attempt to put aside their differences and work together. It is clear that Owen is still struggling with the events of Widow's Web and needs to find a way to reconcile his own feelings of guilt and Gin's actions.

There are one or two problematic issues and the most significant is still the repetitious phrasing and Estep's tendency toward underestimating her readers' ability to come to their own conclusions based on the clues provided in the narrative.

Estep's use of flashbacks is also awkward as they don't appear to serve any function They would make more sense if they were connected to what was going on in the story.

All in all, an entertaining addition to the series and it will be interesting to see where Estep goes with the intriguing twists.

This was really good and a bit different. Largely set over one night, Gin has to rescue all her friends from a heist. Here the action is centred on Gin and there is less food involved!

And here comes the aftermath. Widow’s Web left us with Owen Grayson channelling his inner Donovan Caine after Gin killed Salina Dubois, his ex-fiancée. Okay, she was a sadistic bitch from hell and had it coming but Gin “finishing her by cutting her throat right in front of Owen while she had Finn holding him at gunpoint Well, let’s say that it didn’t work wonders on their relationship.

So here we are now, Gin gave Owen all the space he needed and she’s trying to act tough as always but inside she’s a total wreck. Actually it’s funny to see how she’s changed since the first instalments in the series. Back then, she never would allow herself to become emotional or feel anything, much less get attached to anyone so this new situation is particularly heart-breaking for her. She gave in and let herself care for Owen despite her better judgement and now the nitwit “needs to take a break. It doesn’t seem to matter much to him that Gin keeps saving his and his sister’s asses and that by killing Salina she was actually protecting them Anyway, I’m pretty sure he’ll come to his senses sooner or later. Well, that doesn’t happen in this instalment, which I’m actually grateful for. It would be too fairytale-ish to have this issue resolved right away and I give Estep credit for taking things slow here.

About the story itself, I have to say I just loved it. It seems that many readers didn’t enjoy the closed setting but I really enjoyed the change of format and of pace. It was a refreshing departure from the rest of the series and gave it a much-needed breath of fresh air. I also liked that this instalment focused on Gin and only Gin. The other recurring characters make small appearances (apart from Finn at the beginning of the book and then Owen when Gin rescues him from the vault) so we really get into Gin’s head. The book is action-packed but it is also more reflective. There is a lot of character growth here and I love the way Gin is evolving. She is allowing herself to feel more and at the same time she seems more ruthless than ever. Once again, she reminded me of Kate Daniels but this time for all the good reasons. When I first started reading this series I often used to compare both characters and thought that Gin was lacking in some way. Well, I don’t think so anymore. Alright, she is no Kate Daniels (the most freaking awesome, butt-kicking, snarky heroine of all times) but she’s pretty cool and getting better with every new instalment. Oh and did I mention how gruesome the fights are getting? Blood and gore and violence, I love it all! :)

Deadly Sting is definitely one of my favourite book in the series and I see it as some kind of turning point, with lots of new developments to come in the next few books. I can’t wait to see what direction this series will take and what surprises Estep has in store.

Off to read Heart of Venom!

3.5 stars Predictably, Gin kicks butt.

Nothing ever comes easy for Gin Blanco, aka the Spider. From purchasing a formal gown to attending a gala event, peril finds this restaurant owner and ‘retired assassin. As we’ve seen throughout the Elemental Assassin series Gin is very skilled with silverstone knives, and since she is the protagonist we, know she’ll rise to the occasion. So, what keeps us reading? Gin’s personal growth, emerging abilities, love life (Owen!), family dynamics, and special brand of justice bring us back for more. Deadly Sting gives us all of those elements, just without as much action and tension as we’re used to, but of course I shouldn’t speak for everyone.

What I Wanted to See

Easy answer: Owen

He’s definitely present.

What I Saw: A Checklist

 Personal Growth
+ Emerging Abilities
+ Owen
+ Family Dynamics
+ Justice

Mayhap I missed the personal growth. There were times I wanted to shake Gin and tell her to stop moping. Owen, Owen, OWEN! How high I placed you on a pedestal! I still don’t understand him. It’s frustrating.

Bria and Finn provide excellent back-up. They support Gin through the heartache and assist with the killing. I had downright disliked Bria in By a Thread. Gin’s sister has come a long way and I love her character. Finn and Bria make a terrific match! Jo-Jo and Sophia’s presence is minimal. Xavier and Rosalyn presence is stronger than the Deveraux sisters. There’s a certain point in the book where I wanted a peek into Jo-Jo head. What does this gifted air elemental foresee? Why let Gin struggle? Hmm.

Then there’s the killing! No one one’s how to slash throats, tendons, and stomachs open like Gin! The Spider is not a vicious killer. She’s cool, calculated, efficient. My favorite thing about this series is Jennifer Estep’s characterization of Gin. To me, Gin is what a heroine/assassin should be.

Deadly Sting has action, but not as much as I’ve come to expect. Most of the time Gin seemed stuck in her own head - dwelling on Owen and feeling guilty about envying happy couples giving the story a sluggish quality. Knowing Gin’s gift for overcoming apparently insurmountable obstacles diminished the amount of tension to the story’s only major conflict. There is closure to one ongoing thread; it’s a fitting end.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed Gin’s latest exploit. There’s someone new (I think) coming to Ashland. Whoever it is, he or she is sure to stir things up! I look forward to the next Elemental Assassin book, Heart of Venom.

SUMMARY (60 words or less)
I really like this series. I think my disappointment is that I thought we would get resolution from the cliffy in the last book. But alas At this point even I was ready for Gin to move on. Not quite sure why she doesn’t. Add to that this book takes place for the most part in one day.

Lauren Fortgang is awesome. I mean she does the best reading for this book. If I’d dreamed up Gin’s voice and candence, it would be this. I can only hope she continues.

Why I Read this Book: Gin FTW!

What I Liked: Things were done a bit differently in Deadly Sting than in the other books in this series. There is a clever and interesting setup that puts a different spin on things. Things like the main setting, where majority of the book takes places, to more minute details such as Gin's dress. Clever, clever, clever. (Seasoned readers will see what I did there.)

I have always found it fascinating the way Gin’s past correlates with the present and we get to see that again in Deadly Sting through her flashbacks. I was just as anxious to find out how her flashback was going to play out as I was the current story arc.

I love me some poetic justice so I was very pleased with the karmic ending in Deadly Sting. Someone gets their just deserts and let me tell you, it was quite satisfying. Well played, Gin. Well played.

I like being kept on my toes and that's exactly what the introduction of this mysterious MM Monroe character does. Questions are raised concerning this person and I'm anxious to find out the answers.

What I Didn’t Like: I am finally caught up with this series and now I actually have to wait five months for the next installment. *pouts*

Memorable Moment:

“What are you waiting for? Let’s dance, bitch.

“You wanna dance? Clementine asked, her hands closing into fists as she slowly advanced on me. “By the time I get done with you, there won’t even be any bones left to feed the fish.

“Come over here and say that again, sugar.

Overall Impression: Jennifer Estep brings something new and different to the table with each new installment in the Elemental Assassin series. Every. Single. Time. This author is full of new and unique ideas and does an amazing job at continuing this series at impressive pace. And with Deadly Sting, it was no different. I was blown away, yet again. I never know what to expect when reading this series, except to expect the unexpected. A solid 5-stars for the entire series, thus far.

Why do men fear women who are strong? Owen has been a complete jerk. Yet Gin is still in love with him. Gin seems to pick only men who are not capable of handling her abilities. In Deadly Sting, Gin is still stuck with a very large target on her back as the underworld bets on who will kill her. It must be completely exhausting to constantly watch out for killers. Gin's luck continues to hold as she escapes yet another near death.

One would think two things would happen to Gin. Either she burns out from the constant fight mode she's in, or she hones her skills to a level where no one can take her down because every single way to end her life has been attempted. This story could be a rather tediously long tale of Gin fighting off death threats. Instead, a new player is introduced. Gin also proves she's still on the top of her game. This is cleverly done by Ms. Estep and will perhaps breathe new life and focus to the Elemental Assassin series. It's definitely piqued this reader's interest.

Ms. Estep does another good job of weaving a web of misdirections in this paranormal suspense tale. It keeps the reader engaged and wondering what will come up next. It also ties a few loose ends nicely and gives a way for a new story arc to begin. Hopefully in the new one, Gin will finally meet a man who is her match and will partner with her. Owen didn't do enough in this book to redeem himself.

Gin's flashbacks to Fletcher were a wonderful addition. It gives Gin a more human feel as well as show a young and frightened Gin. The contrast yet comparisons of young to old Gin give a lovely rounded view. It makes Gin more likeable. It also makes a reader feel sorrow for the hardships Gin went through, in order to become the woman she is today. Her hard lessons make the decisions she makes now, completely understandable.

This paranormal suspense is recommended to readers who love Gin and won't give up on her - unlike the men she dates.
