Really CDs but I can’t be bothered to get this edition added. Yes I did enjoy this and find it funny. It was good to have a (slightly romantic) story from older people’s perspective, though they were in their 30s. I’ll definitely read another by this author.
The storyline at the back gave me the impression of a different kind of read. something more exciting- a little more adventure. I just expected more. I also kept skipping bits especially where i felt i had to read the grammar twice ir three times to make sense of it- honestly missed nothing of the storyline. I must admit however, Asheem was a complete creep!!!!!! wasn't he?
This story was okay, not nearly as good I had expected it to be from reading the back cover. It was supposed funny but for some reason I did not find myself laughing.
Mick and Pauline Watkins from the UK swap their house for 2 weeks for a house at Black Rock in Melbourne to try and jazz up their relationship. They got more than they bargained for - a huge executive house, a yacht, 2 BMW's to drive around in and new friend, Busty who met them at the airport in the guise of a woman - that was a bit different.
On behalf of her daughter and son-in-law Lorna and Greg McKenzie, June agreed to the swap with Lorna's permission. They have been invited to a family wedding in the UK. June knows what they are in for because she comes from this area and but Lorna (a solictor) and Greg (a property developer) are in for some shocks. Lorna wants to drag Greg away because she has found out that he is having an affair. They move into a house in Leister that is a lot smaller than theirs, they did not get quite a bargain here - to add to that Pauline forgot to give the dog to her Mum to look afer and after 2 days stuck inside the house - it was not a pleasant arrival. Throw into the mix Lorna's aunts and her cousin Melissa and her fiance Elroy, it gets even better. Lorna finds out that Melissa has worshipped her since she was a child, this made Lorna feel a little guilty because she had not given Melissa a thought.
I listened to this book as an audio book on a long road trip.
What I liked:
-It was thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. -I frequently wanted to keep going with the story! -The characters were likeable and fun. -The setting and atmosphere was great
What I didn't like: -There was some super corny parts, cheesey sayings and quotes etc. -Dialogue was often highly unrealistic -The ending was rather flat.
I am a big fan of audio books so I have not 'read' this but listened to it narrated by the author. For a kiwi to hear a Brit do an Australian accent so well is a delight. And as for her rendition of Busty a Go Go? well words fail me.
Now I liked this story. Full of human frailty, insecurity and a bit of daring do. Although I was surprised that Pol and her husband had not progressed past the missionary position in their marriage.
