The art by Alex Toth: brilliant. Beautiful compositions and drawing style. I'm amazed this was done in 1957-61 (I think), the style is very much ahead of its time.
That said, the stories? at best pedestrian, at worst, utterly boring and lazy. To be fair, the stories target a young demographic, but still, I've read plenty of things geared for younger audience that were written with great skill and interesting cleverness. And I do think the stories could have benefitted from more "bite" but being a Disney property at the time the depiction of violence and zippo romance make sense. A few of the stories (longer ones) were a bit more interesting but overall meh.
Recommend for Alex Toth fans and fans of great design/figure drawing. And story-wise I do think it can still possibly be entertaining for younger readers.
Avoid the Hermes Press color reproduction, they really botched it up big time! Find the Eclipse B/W print instead with grey tones laid in by the master himself.
This was better than I went in expecting. I assumed the Alex Toth artwork would be good, but I've never been a huge fan of Zorro, but this volume may have changed my mind. The stories are light-hearted and clever, with plenty of action and humor.
I also never realized how much Batman and Zorro have in common. Both are rich and pretend to be useless fops, both have butlers that help them out, and both even have caves for hide outs.
This is a collection of what I think were the very first Zorro comics from the 1950s, and really, they hold up pretty well. If you're a fan of Zorro or Alex Toth you'll probably like this one.
Personally I think Alex Toth is a bit overrated, he can compose a scene well and does action in an interesting way but the actual detail and clarity of the art isn’t there.
This is an adaption of the Walt Disney TV series, usually prefer new material, but Zorro is a good character in like any form.
Toth's artwork is amazing, of course. It's thrilling and deceptively simple. The Complete Classic Adventures of Zorro is worth having just to flip through and marvel over the drawings.
The stories are good, too, but they're mostly adaptations of episodes from the Disney TV series in the '50s. That's not a problem for readers unfamiliar with the show, but fans of it may wish for something new. There are some short tales included that weren't adapted from TV and they ended up being my favorites.
The Zorro comics by Alex Toth have some great compositions and designs. Toth excels at silhouettes, so the portrayal of the swashbuckling Zorro is handled very well. The many stories collected in here are pretty entertaining, but also not very sophisticated or creative. Perhaps it was Toth's intention to play to a younger audience, but that doesn't necessarily mean they should lack novelty. This can be enjoyable for those who just want to enjoy Toth's layouts and linework, but the stories themselves are pretty forgettable.
Alex Toth is a true master, whom many great artists of the comic book medium have a lot to thank as inspiration. This collection of his Zorro stories is a perfect example of his way of drawing, but also telling a story. Everything is marvelously explained in the introduction, which I suggest very much to read. Simple but great stories, as told and drawn by a master.
Fun collection. The stories are pretty standard—adventure tales laced with humor and aimed at younger readers—but the art by the incomparable Alex Toth is majestic. His perspectives, compositions, shading…just brilliant.
Done during the Disney TV show, these comic stories are very light weight, but very pretty to look at. Fun, pulp-swashbuckling reads, which work best when they stop talking and have Zorro running, jumping and fighting.
One of the best collection of comic book Zorro stories available. It is my only hope that Dynamite retains this realistic storytelling with their Zorro lineup this fall.
Mostly dull to mundane advneture stories, but the art is fantastic and the storytelling skills of Toth shine through as always. Recommended for study for cartoonists, or for (very) light reading.
This was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I was excited to find the issue -- the exact frame -- that started my 40-year-journey of loving, learning, teaching Spanish.
