In Conversation with God: Meditations for Each Day of the Year, Vol. 2: Lent and Eastertide

Rate this book
Author Francis Fernandez-Carvajal makes generous use of the writings of the great saints as he brings you focused and moving meditations on themes taken from the Mass readings for that day, the liturgical season, and more. This work is rich and extensive enough to serve as your spiritual reading for a lifetime, as it helps you relate the particulars of the message of Christ to the ordinary circumstances of your day. Each volume is small enough for you to carry it to Adoration or some other suitable place for meditation. The whole set comes with a handsome slipcase that prevents wear-and-tear on the individual volumes.

The last week is the best as we spent the whole week going over the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and we realize how Great God is to give us these marvelous gifts of the Sweet Holy Spirit! I was not so faithful to reading this as I wish I had been, but more faithful than in prior years. My prayer is that I may continue to have a few more years and that each one to come I will be better about attending to the Wisdom contained herein!

February 25, 2020: Will begin this tomorrow. Will also sign off Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ today and not return until after Easter.

Apr 03, 2011: I've always wanted to use this as a daily reading. I've got the complete series and I've dipped into it off and on at various times over the years but never stuck with it for any length of time. So far, now I am and I really feel like I'm “in conversation with God. I like it!

I have used this series for 20 years, ever since I picked up whichever book was appropriate for the liturgical time we were in. Even after so long, there is new food for thought and for "conversation." Also, I realize how much I have been formed as a Catholic by the overall message about living daily life by sharing our small joys and sorrows with Christ. One could do much worse.

I picked this up after a few years in the end of Lent and found the absence considerably freshened it up for me. It is of inestimable value as I proceed into Easter.

Sometimes when I start to read a book, I know it will be so good I do not mark in it the first time I read it through. This series falls into that category. However, this being my second time through these books for the second year in a row, I am now underlining, making notes in the margins and reading much deeper than my first time through last year. These books are an awesome devotional series of books and deserve the time and attention of a 6 or 7 page devotion each day. They will help you grow closer to Christ, and through that, to the other people in your life.
This volume spans the time from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost Sunday. Therefore this book will lead you through Lent, Easter and the 5 weeks of Easter leading up to Pentecost. If you cannot afford the whole set, start with this volume and the Advent and Christmastide volume, then add the others over time. It is usually cheaper to buy the boxed set but sometimes that amount of money is not available up front.

My review of the whole series highlights some of the aspects of the series as a whole. Here I will just give you some sample quotes:

"Each of us must draw up a specific plan of mortification to offer to God every day during this Lent."
p.5

"The person who abandons mortification is inevitably ensnared by his senses and becomes incapable of any supernatural thought."
p.8

"Let us make up our minds to keep close to Our Lord during these days by contemplating his most Sacred Humanity in the vivid and memorable scenes of The Way of the Cross. Let us see how, for our sakes, he wakes along the Path of Sorrows."
p.18

"It is not only the person who never falls who sanctifies himself, but the person who always rises again. Having defects is not what is bad - all of us have defects - but making a pact with them and ceasing to fight. Christ then, the Physician, cures us and then helps us to struggle."
p.22

"The devil exists and acts in people and society. His activity is mysterious, but real and effective."
p.31

"We are all children of God, and being children, then heirs. The inheritance is the sum of incalculable good things God has prepared, and of the limitless happiness He has willed for us."
p.106

"This is how we must travel along the way of self-giving: the Cross on our shoulders, a smile on our lips and light in our hearts."
p.160

Hopefully those few samples will draw you in and inspire you to work your way through these books.

(I have switched to the eBook versions that each volume is split in 2.)

I made this book (one in a series of seven that covers every day of the year, including volumes for solemnities, feast days, etc.) part of my daily spiritual reading for Lent, Holy Week, and Eastertide. About ten minutes of reading to consider holy things was a highlight of each day. The author does a wonderful job of exploring a different daily topic, relying heavily on Scripture, of course, first, and next St. Josemaria Escriva's writings (as Fernandez is an Opus Dei priest and St. Josemaria was its founder). But he also adds in quotes from plenty of classic and contemporary authors and Fathers and great saints of the Church. It is quite an amazing amalgamation of the author's personal reflections with many great works woven in. Ten minutes to read but enough spiritual fodder to last the rest of the day (and lifetime).

The series is just over thirty years old but it is already widely considered a spiritual classic.

The set can be a little pricey, but it is well worth the cost. You may find getting the individual volumes a less expensive option.

A wonderful devotional that follows the Mass readings during Lent and Easter. It provided wonderful insight in new ways of thinking about things. This book is part of a set for all of the mass readings for the liturgical year and I look forward to reading more!

This series of daily contemplative devotions coincide with the Catholic Mass Readings from each day. Many times the readers at Mass cannot convey the depth of meaning regarding the meaning of the scriptures and this series of books makes the scripture readings from Mass more meaningful whether I read them before Mass, or after Mass. I love this series. I am not good at practicing meditation but this helps me spend some time in prayer! The special season editions are especially helpful to me.

A little behind in finishing this and missed a few days in the book (it has a reading reflection for each day. It was very good, especially the bit at the end between the ascension and the descent of the Holy Spirit it gave a bit about the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
