From New York Times, USA Today, and WSJ bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes the first novel in the delicious Not Quite series.

Waitress and single mom Jessica “Jessie Mann is practical to a fault. Even if she had time to date, which she doesn’t, she’d be determined to provide her son with a more secure upbringing than the one she had—and that would mean a husband with big bucks. When Jack Morrison—a sexy-as-sin, seemingly broke customer with a cowboy hat and a seductive grin—tries to flirt with her, she shoots him down. She doubts a carefree dreamer like Jack can provide the financial stability she needs. Yet with Christmas just weeks away, and Jessie not wanting to spend it alone, the charming Texan is proving hard to resist.

As the heir to the Morrison luxury hotel empire, Jack is used to being fawned over. But Jack needs someone who will fall in love with him—not his wealth. He’s set his sights on Jessie, though her hardened heart just might get in the way…To be sure, he conceals his true identity and offers to help Jessie find the rich husband she seeks. But Jack’s daring charade may rob him of the holiday wish he wants most of all

Catherine Bybee is one of my favorite authors so I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, it wasn’t exactly up to par with her other works I’ve read.

Honestly, it was good and enjoyable for the most part, but not quite my kind of book. The plot was too plain and predictable—a millionaire pretended to be the waiter in order to find true love. I didn’t mind how cheesy the story was because as you know, I never say no to cheese! My major problem was the drama. It did nothing but upset me! Moreover, I wasn’t particularly impressed by the execution of the story.

By the way, the next book in this series sounds promising. I’ll probably consider reading it one day.

WTF did I just read.

The premise is:

A billionaire who wants to find a soul who won’t love him for his money.

A single mother who wants to find a rich husband who will take care of her and her five year old kid.

And then he proceeds to fall in love with her and she will push him away repeteadly because he didn’t have said money/he was a dreamer.

But WHY did I think this would make any sense at all?

There was a moment she was judging a “cougar who wanted to sleep with Jack (H) saying she was shallow and using people, and then, she starts questioning (some thinking she did right there) if her intentions of finding a rich husband with the help of Jack aren’t as shallow as the cougar’s. WOMAN, YES. FFS. WAKE UP AND BE A DECENT HUMAN BEING!

No, I’m not angry, you’re the angry one.

Well, at least it wasn’t 500 pages long, there’s that.

I've had this book on my TBR list for quite a while and thought I'd give it a try. I listened to the Audible version and the narration for Jack's character was horrible! I almost just quit listening altogether because it was so bad.

Aside from the unappealing narration, the story was kind of cute. I did like the characters, even if I was put-off by some of the over-the-top "country bumpkin" portrayals of Jack. At times, it did feel more like I'd gotten ahold of a script for an episode of 'The Beverly Hillbillies' than a romance. However, the story did grow on me and by the end I wanted to see a HEA for them.

It was short, compared to most audiobooks, which was a plus for me. It also delivered a HEA and didn't leave me hanging with a cliffhanger. Although it is the first book in a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Overall, it was just "okay" for me. It was sweet and cute, but just not super appealing to me. If the narration hadn't been so bad, I would have enjoyed this more and might have continued the series. As it stands, I'm just not interested enough to continue this series. It was alright to pass a little time, but nothing to write home about.

★★★★ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Sweet and fun. Nothing new here, but I really liked it. Fast-paced, with a nice flow. Made me smile a few times. It was very pleasant to listen to while I did my weekly errands.

I haven’t read anything by this author before, but I’ll be checking out more of her books. Enough that I checked into when the next in the series comes out. (April, 2013).

For that matter, I’ve never heard Amy McFadden narrate before, and she does a nice job. I’ll look for her again, too. Hope she does the next one in the series.

Not quite much of anything really
Not quite of a reason why I would like this more than any other book I know of.

It's a pallete cleanser yes, but that's not something to appraise, isn't it?

Not quite enough brain cells either: Jessie is extremely rude and Jack is sooo bad at lying (and is sort of a man-child)

Pretty much comparable to "The Cheat Sheet"

Sometimes you read a book that, in that moment, fits the mood you're in perfectly. This was definitely the case with Not Quite Dating. Lately I've been reading books with so much angst, drama, and emotion in them that it was nice to switch to something a little lighter in tone. Not Quite Dating is a sugary sweet, easy read that makes you feel good. It's straight romance, and refreshing in it's simplicity.

Jack is a billionaire heir to a large hotel empire who is growing weary of gold digging women. Jessie is a single mother working the grave yard shift at a local diner who has a past littered with poor "men" choices. She has a knack for attracting dead beat guys, and she is convinced that she will not make that mistake again.

The premise of this book is quite simple. Jack wants to hide his wealth and find a woman who wants him solely for himself and not his bank account. He decides to keep his real identity a secret and instead pose as a transient temp waiter.

Jessie is sick of picking broke and unambitious playboys that leave at the drop of a hat. The next guy she falls for is going to be successful and have money in the bank. The attraction between Jessie and Jack is immediate, but Jessie refuses to make the same mistake again. After making it clear that she has no intentions of dating Jack, the two decide to become friends.

This "friendship" is brimming with sexual tension, and I loved how the author takes the time necessary to make this relationship feel believable.

Danny, Jessie's adorable 5 year old son also plays a large role in this story. There were so many "precious moments" with Danny that I honestly lost count. The relationship that develops between Jack and Danny seemed so real and authentic, that there were times I wanted Jessie to get a clue and acknowledge what was right in front of her face!

Not Quite Dating was a strong 4 star read until the secrets and lies dragged on for a bit too long. Other than that one tiny complaint, I absolutely adored this romantic "rags to riches" story.

A copy of this book was provided by Amazon's Vine Program in exchange for an honest review!

Torn here between 4.0-4.5 stars so I just rounded up. Rachel Gibson came to mind while I was reading this. Think fans of hers will like this story. A sweet romance between Jessie, a single mom who’s struggling to make ends meet as a waitress and millionaire Jack who’s looking for love from someone who’s not just after his money. To protect himself, making sure she’ll love him for who he is and not what he has, he pretends to be a waiter at one of his hotels. Jessie’s 5 yr old son Danny is darling and Jessie’s sister Monica who’s often the voice of reason are two of Jack’s biggest fans. Jessie struggles between what her heart wants and what she thinks she needs as her friendship with Jack evolves into love. This is a feel good story and I would love to have read even more about Jack/Jessie/Danny as a family. This bk had my full atention, I flew threw it a day. I’m anxious to move on to bk 2 about Jack’s sister Katie and hopefully get another peak or two at how Jack/Jessie are doing.

6.21.18- Edited to correct a mistake.

1.5 stars

I'm so confused. A wealthy man wants to find a woman who doesn’t want him for his money. He sets his eye on someone who admittedly is only interested in a man with money, says to himself "hey, I like this one"? It makes NO SENSE. Plus with all the lying, I'm done. The stars I gave this one are for how much I enjoyed Bybee's writing. It's reminiscent of Laura Florand's and was very enjoyable to read.

OK, so I’ve read a few reviews saying that the ending of this book is predictable..

Um, so unless you’ve been living under a rock in Scotland for the past 472 years (oh wait, that’s a different Catherine Bybee series), you know exactly how this book will end. You EXPECT it to end a certain way, and if it doesn’t, well, you will be pissed off.

The fun is in getting to the ending.

And this book is fun. A lot of fun. Jessie and Jack are extremely likeable, cool characters and you have to root for them. Is there lying going on? Yeah, a little. But it’s for a very good reason (as in Jack wants a woman to love him for him and not his checkbook and Jessie is stating flat out she’s looking for a man with money). Is there a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING? Yeah, but it’s fixed pretty quickly. Is there a STUPID MISTAKE? Nope. No one falls into the “too stupid to live category. So no biggie, right?

Add to that an extremely sweet (though precocious) 5-year old kid, and you’ve got a great book.

And the ending? Oh, just read it and figure it out.

2.5 stars. Very blah. I think this is one of Ms. Bybee’s earlier books and it really is reflected in the quality of the writing. It’s not bad exactly, but it’s nowhere near the level of her newer books. This story was (for the most part) boring, predictable, and the premise was stupid.

The hero of this book lies to the heroine, telling her that he is poor to see if she would be interested in him without any money. BUT the heroine said multiple times at the beginning that she wanted a rich man so she and her son didn’t have to struggle. It made no sense to have a hero trying to find a woman who doesn’t want him for his money but then picking a woman who specifically wants a rich man for her husband!! There are a lot of excuses made for the heroine’s desire to marry a man with money, and some were even believable. But I think that the author waited a bit too long to have the heroine picking the hero anyways. I especially didn’t like that she went out on a date with OM - what if he wasn’t a huge jerk? Would she have continued dating him??

Anyways, just not this author’s best work at all.

Safe; no virgins, heroine has a son but father is totally out of the picture, no ow drama, om drama from a man who asks the heroine on a date, she goes but nothing happens. No scenes with om/ow, no cheating.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I had no expectations for this book. I just saw that it was an audible available on my Kindle Unlimited account and I went for it. Yes, I can be very picky about what I read or listen on my Kindle because sometimes the recommendations can be quite ridiculous. However, I really liked this book and I was really happy that I got to listen to it while I was at work today.

Not Quite Dating was a really cute romance novel. I loved both characters, Jack and Jessie, and I definitely fell in love with little Danny. I didn't hate or feel annoyed by any characters - other than the narrator making Jack sound like such a hillbilly. I did laugh, I smiled throughout the whole thing, and my heart did break a little when Jessie, Danny, AND Jack felt heartbroken.

I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book. I also kind of want a love like Jessie and Jack's but without the whole lying thing... I'll accept all the loving though. And an accent.

This book was really sweet.

So far it is safe to say that I have loved every book I have read by Catherine Bybee. You know that her characters are going to have a good attractions with pits and falls before fully coming into the romance and a brilliant feel good ending.

Jessie is a young mum who works long hours late at night as a waitress in order that she can spend her daylight hours with her son in order that he doesn't miss out. Her younger sister lives with them rent free in order that she also helps with her son.

Money is tight and she often has to juggle her funds to the penny and would love to fall in love and marry a rich man to provide more stability in her sons life. She wants her son to have the best he can.

Jack Morrison is on his way back with his buddies from a stag do when they go for a meal at the dinner where Jessie works. He is immediately drawn to the waitress and becomes entranced when she tells him no. A feeling that he has never felt before has him deciding that for the first time he actually wants to chase a woman to see if she would fall for his as him, so he pretends to be a poor waiter. He is actually the son of a billionaire hotel tycoon and is rich on his own merits.

Jessie and Jack provide a brilliant chase where Jack is constantly kept on his toes and Jessie shows her loyalty to her family and her love for her son.

It is heart warming to see how Jack instantly connects with Jessie's young son and just seems to slip effortlessly into their lives.

Of course both Jessie and Jack hit a few bumps and have a few misunderstandings, which only makes the romance seem more plausible and endearing.

I already love this series and can't wait to read the next one!

If you read the blurb, you can probably put most of the plot together without bothering to read the book. Only then, you'll miss out on the fun characters. I just liked both Jessie and Jack and spending time with them was worth the investment. And thinking back on it, the writing was solidly unobtrusive (which I like) and the secondary characters did a good job enhancing the main story without taking it over—and that includes the kid.

A note about Steamy: Mildly steamy. Some explit sex, but kept short and relatively unobtrusive.

Eksik kalan serilerden.

(Review of Audiobook) Not Quite Dating is a first listen for me by author, Catherine Bybee. I typically don’t listen much to contemporary romances, but this was a first in the series for this author. Well with that being said, I can say this was one story I was totally captivated by the characters and story line.

Jessie Mann, a waitress working the graveyard shift has had enough of broke men or men wanting to use her for what little she has…which is practically nothing. She has enough trouble in her life and dating some guy she thinks is interesting and cute isn't enough. She is bent on finding her a rich man so that she can feel secure and find security for her 5-year old son, Danny. She also wants to help her sister, who lives in her tiny one bedroom while she attends nursing school. Jack Morrison is a deadbeat-looking cowboy who drives an old pickup truck and looks as if he has no future or ambition. He is tired of women wanting him for his money and not seeing the real Jack, the Jack with the rugged race, black Stetson, southern drawl and dippled cheeks. Jack was born into money and has made a life for himself on his own becoming a billionaire of hotels.

In walks Jack and his buddies after a night in Vegas celebrating Dean’s upcoming nuptials. After being seated, Jessie spies the men but then is gravitated to Jack. The chance meeting between the two has Jack wanting to do everything in his power to win Jesse over..he is totally smitten with her. Jessie has responsibilities, and she knows a loser guy like Jack can make life tougher. He is completely a big turnoff for Jessie, however she doesn’t know that Jack is a billionaire in disguise. Jack plays up his act of being just the “average joe. Jessie doesn't want anything to do with him, and that's okay which. He's determined. After she shoots down his offer of a date, he asks to be friends and help find a rich guy. What does she have to lose.

Their friendship ends up with Jack fixing and then buying her a new car, dress, shoes and diamond earrings. All under the pretense that he has friends that owes him favors but all along he is rich as Croesus. What began as friendship ends of with the two having a heavily heated attraction for one another. Even her son and sister a drawn into Jack’s circle. Unable to control their attraction, they end up becoming intimate and that is where Jack fails. He jumps head in first and asks her to marry him and puts her on the run. To makes things worst, she sees him on the television all decked out and that he is in fact a very rich man and was set to get married. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know that the person is her.
The HEA in all this is that they both made mistakes, make amends and head to the alter. It doesn’t hurt to have his father, sister, her sister and son backing them up.

Bybee has a knack for reeling you into her story and it doesn’t hurt to have a cowboy looking like Jack. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and look forward to the next book in her series.

4 Prince charming stars!!

I really enjoyed this, such a nice romance story with great characters.

Jessica is a single mum struggling to make ends meet, working a dead end waitressing job. It's while doing that job she meets Jack and his friends after they've had a huge bucks weekend in Vegas. Jack is instantly interested in Jessica but wants to see if he can win her heart without her knowing he is filthy rich, he is over all the gold diggers and just wants something real (Yes, this causes all sorts of drama later in the book).

A solid read that kept me entertained the whole way through. It felt a little like a fairy tale retelling. Jack comes off as the perfect prince charming, just with a cowboy hat instead of a crown.

...and it started off so well.

The beginning was promising but then it got annoying really quick with Jessie's constant denials. THEN, if that wasn't annoying enough, there was just...so much damn drama in the last third (all of which was due to Jessie's overly dramatic reactions...chill girl -- I don't know why someone would expect to be proposed to be a guy upon a reunion when the last time they'd met she'd rejected his proposal and told him to get out) that was followed by an overly syrupy happy ending.

Oh and this nonsense:

Oh, yeah...trust IS important. But what does that have to do with Jack's situation? I feel like the author just threw that in there to make over-dramatic Jessie sound wise or something because all the man did was avoid telling you that he was loaded. I hardly think that's testing the pillars of trust in a relationship.

And this nonsense too that Monica was spouting:

I'm sorry...what? Why the hell does Jack have to be the one to come and prove his love for her?? He's the one who put himself out there and proposed and she callously rejected him (doesn't matter about what the reader is reading because that's not what Jack was hearing) and now he has to be the one to come back and prove himself worthy?

Oh and when Jack agreed to friendship:

Ok...what? He was relentlessly pursuing her even though she cut him down continuously and was basically telling him to get lost...and now when he agrees to her terms he's suddenly not all that into her? Oh, my...this character...

Jack. Jack! Listen to me, Jack. You can do better.

Lettura adorabile.

Feb. 3, 2014 Catherine Bybee is a new author for me so when I purchased Not Quite Dating I hoped that it would be as interesting as the book description the publishing company supplies. I was not disappointed. The story really draws you in after the first few pages and never lets you go. Jessie is a struggling single mom who works nights as a waitress at a dinner supporting herself and her son Danny who is five years old. She lives in a small two bedroom apartment with her sister, who is going to school to become a nurse. While working her shift she meets Jack, a billionaire's only son. This is their love story.

Re read on April 23, 2015 still a five star read. love this story of poor single mom finding a handsome wealthy soul mate. sensual level is a very strong 7 with a strong story and likable characters how can you go wrong. I strongly recommend this story.

Artificioso.
