The Fragile Tower

Grace Lane is a shy fifteen-year-old girl living in a small town in New York state. She has been looking for something to make her feel like she matters for most of her life. After a beautiful and exotic fair arrives on her street in the middle of winter, her brother vanishes during the night.
Grace realizes that getting him back is up to her, even if it means traveling to another world. She faces dark magics, the beautiful and dangerous sorcery of the Fragile Tower, and a Queen willing to risk anything to keep her world within her control. But in standing against her, she has to come to terms with the truth about her family, and her own feelings for the resourceful huntsman Afi who helps her in her quest.

Grace Lane, originally from Russia (or so she thought), had been living in High Peaks for a while now. She had been struggling to fit in ever since. Now, she has to survive being the new girl with newly found abilities in not one but two worlds. Luckily, she has creatures and friends to help her and the adorable hunter Afi definitely helped, too. And she must survive. There is no other option. Because her brother's life depends on it.
What happens if you have magic powers you don't know how to control and have to cross into a world you didn't even know existed? What will Grace do when faced with creatures with names and abilities that you don't even want to meet in broad daylight? Who can you trust when it seemed as if people around you are not what they seemed?
The story is engagingly written with prose and grace, full of humour that will never fail to make you laugh, powerful magic, mysteries and suspense with twists and turns that will keep you on your toes all day and all night, brilliant creatures of magic, love of all kinds and real bravery. The end is simply heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time and definitely will leave you wanting more.

Complex and moving, this book kept surprising me, and challenging a lot of (rubbish) YA tropes (while sticking with some of the classics - unknown to self, child is born to remarkably great powers, finds self in different world, does remarkably well, cue love interest who is an annoyance at first).
I believed in the characters, and felt real warmth towards them. None of the bad guys were cardboard cut-outs, and none of the good guys either.
Proper modern classic YA fantasy. Brava! :D

A classic adventure with an average teen who only wants to be important. When her brother is taken into a hidden world that her mother had kept from her, she leaves the safety of her home to go find him. A fantastic thrill ride full of great characters and the end will only leave you wanting more! This author did a fantastic job and I would definently recommend.
