Sandra-Model

Rate this book
Sandra-Model follows the exploits of a twelve-year-old, non-nude internet model, based in Los Angeles. It is a story of ambition, money, and sex in the context of familial and peer-group relationships. It investigates the world of preteen modeling web sites in an edgy, objective, and dry manner. Its primary subject is adolescent girls and their search for friendship and acceptance.

I hate to even compare this book to the classic, Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov because the only link that connects these two stories is the presence of a child-adult sexual relationship. The subject of morality makes an appearance every once in awhile in this book, but mostly, all you see is budding sexuality, creepy male fantasies, and a tween/teen internet model named Sandra who manipulates men's feelings in order to get a rise out of them. Innocence is downplayed. Sure there's a side-story of how Sandra, AKA Sandra-model, has an internal coming-of-age struggle in which she must choose between remaining a child or emancipation and throwing herself into the adult world. And yes, there is another subplot regarding friendships she forms with other young girls her age as she pursues a fleeting interest in ballet. But as a whole, this book is rather awkwardly written and I found it quite unbelievable from Sandra's perspective.
