Note: If you've seen this review before please don't think I've turned into a review bumper looking for votes. This is just one of those books I'll be revisiting and updating as I knit up patterns from the book. I knit even slower than I read so you'll probably only see it bumped once a year :)

There are some absolutely beautiful and charming projects in this book but there's some strange stuff too. But that's always the case with books like these, isn't it? I can't wait to make the fringed duster, the legwarmers, the gypsy petticoat, seedpod purse and the wishing scarf but I might have to pass on the antler hat and the dragon watcher's hood (seriously it's just a hood, it's cute but where's the rest of it?!). Some of these projects would be gorgeous for photos and costume parties or jaunts through the woods if you're looking for fairies while picking berries but I can't see them being worn daily and I'm too lazy to put that much work into something that my kid will only wear once or twice. There are enough projects in this book that I'm dying to knit up to make the cost of the book a bargain but I'm a bit strange style wise so you need to keep that in mind. I like fringe and flowy, nature inspired styles and this book has plenty of that. Your best bet is going to ravelry.com (but you'll need to sign up - it's free - feel free to friend me!) and checking out all of the patterns before purchasing. You can also check out the designers website at Tiny Owl Knits.

I'll write more and post some pictures of the projects when I knit up a few and have access to a real computer.

UPDATE Sept 2015:

I'm finally getting around to knitting something from this quirky little book. I started knitting up the "juniper wishing scarf" with some doubled up cotton yarn but have since switched to a chunky acrylic because the cotton/needle size was hurting my hands. This is how far I got before ripping it out. It's a super easy cable repeat so I can get it done while watching tv and not feel like I'm wasting so much time :)

This is what it may look like when I've finished. Would you wear it?

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2015

Here's mine, finally finished! This sucker is heavy. If I were ever to knit it again, I'd pick a lighter yarn. It's nice and toasty warm and it's FREEZING here today, so I'm pretty happy with it. It was super easy to knit but my hands hurt. I cut down the fringe a few inches from what the pattern required because that fringe was out of control :)

Currently working on some "Man Hats" (not from this book) but will update this review soonish.

“If I’m honest I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales and I like them best of all. Audrey Hepburn

Ah, fairy tales. We all loved them as a child, and now, as children at heart, who doesn’t love them still? Stephanie at Tiny Owl Knits harkens back to fairy tales with her book Woodland Knits and any lover of the lighthearted and fairy-like is sure to love this collection of fairytale knits. Why, you can even learn to make your own fairy wings!

There are 21 knitted beauties in this collection, and there is sure to be something here or several somethings for you to love, and which fit your knitting skill set! I am making O My Bear! right now (no, I won’t knit the ears, but the rest of it? You bet! I am using Plymouth Yarn’s Encore Tweed Worsted doubled, so it is working up quickly. The bear will be done in worsted weight as well, except for the brown/grey part of the bear, which I am using a “wooly yarn on to give it texture. Pics will show up when I am done!

Free Rapunzel! Is the next thing I want to make so cute! The Woodland Hoodlet is also on my list, but I am going to have to spin up the yarn for that before I make it. It is knitted with super bulky yarn (Stephanie recommends Rowan Big Wool but I have several pounds of a nice merino that I got from Holly at Blue Barn Fiber that I want to dye and spin up. Haven’t decided on a colour yet.)

The instructions are well written, the patterns are darling, and if you need help, all you have to do is email Stephanie and she gets back to you ‘quick like a bunny! If you like to knit, this is a great, fun book, full of everything from the simple to the more fiddly but realistically, everything is easy enough that, with a bit of thought there is nothing here you can’t make!

The first time I heard of Stephanie Dosen, someone referred to her as the Fairy Princess of knitting. I've been following her on Ravelry ever since and I was beyond thrilled to get this book from my brother for Christmas!

Yes, the patterns inside are different. They look like squirrels knitted them for wood nymphs to wear. They are beautiful, and interesting, and unique! I have already made a few of the patterns and I have found them to be clear, well organized, and easy to follow. I like that some of them are a bit challenging and may even include a little crochet (which terrified me initially, but I got through it). The overall quality of the book itself is impressive. I love that every single pattern has multiple full colour photos and include some variations.

I love tinyowlknits on Ravelry, so I'm not surprised that this book is so good. Everything in it is beautiful (even if some of it is too cutesy for me) all the photography was done outside (all the best stuff is), and it was printed on recycled paper. I could honestly just look at this book all day, it's so pretty. I think even people who don't knit would enjoy looking at it. I'm going to make the Birch Scarf right away.

my rating is currently only based on the ~vibes~ as I haven't yet made any of the patterns - there are a few I really want to create, once I can get hold of some yarn. the book is beautiful though, and very whimsical. the notes from author to reader felt very kind-hearted and encouraging.
the recommended yarns are all very specific and very intimidating - a lot of yarns I've never worked with before, like mohair and alpaca, as well as a lot of aran weight yarns. (I can never remember exactly how thick aran is, but I think its much thicker than any yarn I have in my stash!) there is also a lot of focus on felting, which I'm not too keen on doing myself, but I think there's still a lot of patterns I could work with and create some lovely pieces.
I would love to own a copy of this book, as it really is very beautiful, but a quick google search showed that it is very much out of my price range!

I’ve had this on my to be read list for years. Somehow it just never happened. Until now.

Ironically, I actually became acquaintances with the Author on Ravelry before she wrote this book. She’s originally from England, and I was moving TO England, so I was like ‘oh hey, a person with my type of vibe. Turns out, she was moving to the same place I was moving from. Yes, we just swapped.

Anyhoo. The book. Love the book. Love the patterns. There are a few that I would love to knit. And a few that make me so frustrated that I’m allergic to wool, because I wouldn’t really be able to make them in the non animal fibers yarns. But I love them anyway.

I love these knitting patterns, so cute. And Stephanie Dosen is just a really sweet person. Patterns are easy to follow and the little stories are entertaining. Even though I have probably knitted all patterns, I still grab this book time to time to look at the beautiful photos.

Woodlands Knits is purely about providing knitters with amazing patterns that can’t be found anywhere else. You know how some people can pore over a cookbook as light reading before bed, reading every detail and getting excited? Well, that’s me with this book. The patterns are gorgeous. The design of the book is eye-catching, and easy to navigate, and it would be a wonderful addition to any craft shelf.

Also, if you’d rather just look at the patterns and purchase the ones you’re interested in, Stephanie has also listed them on Ravelry. Really, ! (And also look at how nicely other people have knitted these up. That’s definitely my favourite part of Ravelry.)

Rated 3/5 because I wouldn't use most of the patterns in this book, but the ones I like, I really like. :D

More like 1-1/2 stars. The woodsey-fairy theme and cutesy copy were too much for me. I like my knitting books to less fanciful, as hand knits take so much time and expense. I don't want my work to quickly become an old trend. There are about 20 some projects in this book - only one sweater and one poncho, the rest being accessories (hats, scarves, mitts, hoods...). Despite the plentiful photos, the duster, poncho, and sweater are lacking photos of the back sides.

Very interesting patterns, and stays true to the theme. I like the fox scarf best, but there's a lot to enjoy for nature lovers or boho fan

A book of very creative and unusual knitwear designs. This gal is inspired by nature and a playful spirit for sure. Some of the patterns are a little too...froofy...for my taste (Moonbeam Duster, Faerie Wings, Oh My Bear!) but there are others that I can't wait to make (Dragon Watcher's Hood, Spirit of the Birch, Garden Gate and Ivy.) The author has been selling patterns successfully for a number of years so I anticipate that the patterns will make sense (and the ones that I've looked at certainly do.) The book is beautifully put together, my only complaint is that I might not be able to make working-copies of the patterns without risking breaking the spine.

I just received this book today in the mail and I am going on a yarn high right now! This book is so adorable because of all the knit projects they've added. I personally love tiny owl knit's patterns and ideas. I was rather surprised when they released this book because I didn't want to buy individual patterns! When I looked through, I absolutely wanted to try out all the patterns at once. The patterns involve a forestly feeling to add to any wardrobe. It's a dream come true! If you are a big knitter (I'm just a beginner)and crocheter then this is the book for you!

I've followed Tiny Owl Knits on Ravelry for a while, so kinda knew the sort of pattern I'd be getting here. There's a lot of whimsy and cute quirks in her designs which mean I either REALLY want to make them or can't imagine ever considering it. This book hit both!

Beautiful photographs and fun comments from the designer. Seem like clear instructions, though I haven't had a chance to make anything yet.

Patterns I'd personally make:
Woodland Hoodlet
Meow Mitts
Catching Butterflies - LOVE this one
Spirit of the Birch

The patterns in this books are just darling! And although I wouldn't actually wear a lot of them out in public, they are quite a pleasure to look through, in this collection. From a Deer with Little Antlers Hat to Faerie Wings and a Dragon Watcher's Hood, these items--as knitted gifts--would likely go over fantastically with a younger audience.

I loved some of the ideas and patterns although some of theme seemed a little cliché - I definitely have a couple of new projects in mind. I was not so into the layout of the patterns and found that although the patterns are not overly complex it felt that all the energy went into the ideas, graphics and layout - which was amazing but I also wanted a bit more technicality

The original idea of this knitting pattern book was good, but just not my style.
The one pattern that I will be knitting up is the 'Catching Butterflies' a sweet butterfly themed open market mittens. The rest are a little too weird or hippy for me.
Beautiful pictures and generally a lovely looking book.

Most of these were wonderful projects! I really like the hat from the cover! And there's a great hoodie/scarf thing. I think there was only one or two things that I thought "seriously, there is no way I would ever make/wear that!," which is awesome compared to some knitting books.

Haven't attempted any of the knits in the book, but I'm a sucker for themed books. I acquired this from the library to look through, there's a couple of patterns that I could see myself doing in the future, so I might pick it up for my collection.

Mental note: Must re-review AFTER I have knitted patterns in knitting pattern books. But in the meantime - delightful patterns, and cannot wait to start knitting Mr. Fox/fox stole. But given my busy schedule, I probably won't be able to get started on that until the autumn.

This is a beautiful, whimsical little book. It has some of the nicest intarsia patterns I've seen. In general that's not something I'm very inspired to knit but the the kitty mitts are pretty adorable.
