Before I became an author I spent 30+ years carving out a career in advertising starting circa 1985. This seems almost prehistoric!! The nineteen- eighties was an era of hideously permed hair, huge shoulder pads and Madonna. It was also long before women even had a sniff of equal pay, long before maternity leave entitlements were granted, while the #metoo movement was barely an embryo in the wombs of women’s rights.

My career as an ad-land story-teller and strategist afforded me a rare window into the international world of creativity; the study of human behaviour; and the resilience required to overcome obstacles as a woman and mother, working in a male dominated industry. So don’t be surprised to see these themes woven throughout my stories.

My first novel, The Eighth Wonder (July 2021 by Penguin Random House) is set in NYC’s gilded age of 1897 and tells the story of an aspiring female architect and her struggle to make her mark on the Manhattan skyline.

War of Hearts, my second novel (September 2023), is set in 1917/18 against the backdrop of a world convulsing under the twin stressors of The Great War and the Spanish Flu. It tells the story of a pioneering female reporter who must work with a Catholic priest to run intelligence out of occupied France for the British spy network La Dame Blanche.

In terms of books I love to read; I’m omnivorous! I love all genres, crime, suspense, romance, literary etc; but the ones that always have my heart are well researched stories that feature fearless females.

What other things are close to my heart?

Coffee, classical ballet, leg-warmers in winter, surf in summer, libraries, museums, travel. And of course my husband, my daughters, family and friends and fur-babies .

is another addictive historical novel from the pen of Aussie author .

Set in 1917, it’s a story of forbidden love set in wartime that is absolutely captivating. I highly recommend this book!

Investigative reporter turned spy, Grace Winter’s work has taken her to occupied France’s frontline working alongside an alluring Catholic priest known as Father Jude. Grace goes uncover as a nurse to gather intelligence for the Allies and she is also determined to solve a mystery surrounding a tiny silver music box. Father Jude is not without his own secrets, but what are they?

A beautifully written and moving story that’s meticulously researched. I loved Grace, it was inspiring how fearless and brave her female lead character was. The introduction of the Spanish Flu was an intriguing part of the story also.

This is a book not to be missed, a fine addition to any historical fiction lovers collection!

September 2023 marked the highly anticipated return of one of my favourite Australian historical fiction authors, Tania Farrelly. War of Hearts is a grand and epic tale. With themes of war, news reporting, faith, fate, forbidden love, peril and sacrifice, War of Hearts is a blazing historical fiction sonnet.

Tania Farrelly’s second novel revolves around a woman named Grace Winter, a female figure who is ahead of her time. Set in the depths of the Great War, Farrelly’s lead character is a fearless investigative journalist. This New York Times reporter has managed to make it to the trenches of the Western Front. Grace’s work has seen her bear witness to hundreds of deaths in warfare, along with an even deadlier attack, the Spanish Flu. Despite this pure destruction of human life, there are figures who offer some hope, peace and solace in a time of great darkness. Father Jude is a man of faith, but he is also a war hero. Willing to put himself out there on the battlefield, Father Jude’s life takes an interesting diversion when he is matched with Grace. Together, Grace and Father Jude embark on a dangerous mission. Amongst all this destruction of human life, a tiny sliver music box may hold the key to a locked secret and a life changing decision. How will Father Jude and Grace Winter change the course of the war?

Yet again, Tania Farrelly takes out the cover of the year for me with her second novel. However, there is much more to this book than the aesthetically pleasing cover. Inside, readers will find a moving story filled with moments of heroism, love, conviction and mercy.

I love a good historical mystery novel that is inspired by real life artefacts from times past. In the case of this novel, author Tania Farrelly spied a set of objects in a Brussels Museum that ignited her creative juices. A key, bracelet, lock and a crucifix all signified items retrieved from the battlefields of the Great War. Farrelly was then inspired to write a historical mystery around this regalia. A huge amount of research time followed and Farrelly’s second novel was born. It is glaringly obvious that Farrelly has devoted much time and energy since her debut was released to crafting War of Hearts. I was so impressed by the research, information base and the historical backdrop of this book.

Farrelly’s lead female protagonist is such a fine example of a female pioneer of the Great War period. I admired Grace Winter’s drive, determination, passion, bravery and pure heart. I found Grace’s role as a reporter and her work on the Western Front incredibly interesting, as well as inspiring. We need to continue to hear more stories of great female contributions to the war, especially the First World War period. Farrelly has succeeded in bringing us a character who we can learn from and appreciate for her fearless work in the war. Father Jude was a fascinating male hero. I found his presence both soothing and highly intriguing. I loved how Farrelly covered Father Jude in an air of mystery. I thought Jude was humble, earnest and very agreeable. War of Hearts is all about relationships, connections and human nature at its best and worst. With moments of exhilaration, utter despair, heartbreak and plenty of agonising choices to be made, this is an emotive read. With so much death, disease and trauma, Farrelly has captured the feeling of this era well. There are also moments of achievement, adventure and pure love that fill reader with overwhelming emotion. War of Hearts concludes in a beautiful way, ensuring that the audience is left gasping.

War of Hearts takes the lead for one of my favourite historical fiction titles of the year. A very easy five-star award to the triumphant second novel from the magnificent Tania Farrelly.

This beautiful book is a delicious page turner and a fascinating insight into WW1. From New York to the Australian Outback to the French countryside, it sweeps you into two stories and the lives of two fascinating characters, who find forbidden love amid the bleak and brutal landscape of war, and who are both hiding secrets. Tania is a very clever writer. Her use of language is delightful and her story is crafted to keep the pages flipping. Just wonderful!

War of Hearts by Tania Farrelly is great, long War Story which tears at the heart ❤️.

A Soldier, a child, a silver music box, a nun and a priest, a spy all make up the story of War of War of Hearts in this new, very different novel by author, Tania Farrelley.

It took a while for me to read this novel as it was very complex and involved. I had to piece it together like a jigsaw puzzle.

In the end all the pieces did fit!

I found listening to the audio that goes with the book really helped.

I loved hearing about the Orangie and Rose Gardens where Grace the main character had her reading nook and would sip on Russian tea with her mother.

It's a story of War torn hearts and precious love.

An interesting, brand new War Story set against the backdrop of World War I by Tania Farrelley.

Don't miss this one!

Historical fiction has never been my go-to. In fact, of all the commercial fiction genres it’s towards the lower end of the preference list. However, every now and then I’ll find one with an interesting premise, a story seeded inside real events and gladly launch myself into the past.

War of Hearts is as breathtaking as it is heartbreaking. Well-researched, beautifully written, wonderfully executed with two tales woven together so perfectly.

With a host of compelling characters, traumatic histories, a spy network, a war, a pandemic that brushes uncomfortably close to our own recent experiences, this book is sure to delight readers across many different preferred genres.

A beautiful story of a tiny music box that circumnavigates the world, the mystery and lives of the people it touches.

Grace Winter, a forthright and independent journalist is furious to learn that a fellow journalist with lesser skills and no foreign language skills has been chosen over her as the war correspondent for the paper they work for, a job Grace thought she had in the bag. The sensitivities of heritage and government policy are the determining factors, Grace (Wetten) was born in Germany, her mother English, father Prussian, she spent most of her early life in France before immigrating to America. Grace is fluent in French, German, some Dutch and Spanish as well as having medical training which is why she was sure of the job in Europe. Instead she has been relegated to the social pages. Unbeknown to all, Grace has been secretly writing for a clandestine paper.

Due to an incident on public transport where Father Jude O'Malley and Grace are travelling together, an altercation occurs whereby Father Jude is hurt and with Grace's medical training she attends to his serious wounds. It seems it may have been an opportune time for Father Jude, for in conversation he enquires about a music box which in turn is part of a mystery of a little boy reported to have been kidnapped for which Grace is obsessed about.

Grace is exposed by a workmate regarding her secret articles and she finds herself arrested as a spy and is in prison. Father Jude visits her and informs her he is off to France. Perhaps it's the connection of the man she had seen Father Jude with at a charity event for Belgium orphans that she recognises when she finds herself being addressed by an American Colonel and the other man in military uniform a Colonel from British Intelligence who explains to her that the American government want to charge her for espionage due to her articles published in the clandestine newsprint, however, he is trying to convince them that with his knowledge of her skills he wants to train her to be a spy for the Allies. The Americans at this time do not have a strong intelligence network, the British are skilled in this manner. Consequently, Grace finds herself being trained for this role and her life as a spy starts.

As events unfold Grace becomes the owner of a small music box, one that was won in a gambling bet by an American soldier from an Australian soldier who relinquished it to Grace and for which is later revealed its surprising origins.

This WW1 story is nourishment for the heart and head 💜

I always tell my children: 'Interested people are interesting people'. Tania Farrelly may be the most interested person I know.

She's fascinated by history, particularly the untold stories and especially those of women. Reading her work is like jumping into a chalk picture of history, a la Mary Poppins, and having Tania personally guide you around what made that time extraordinary. Her characters are almost always inspired by real people and she sets them against a rich backdrop of a significant moment in time. It's as though she is holding your hand, turning your gaze this way and that, saying, 'See here, look at this. And what about this? Did you know?'

Her prose is flawless, enjoyable and often surprising. Like an unexpected, effervescent tickle to the nose that you might receive while sipping a delectable drink.

She has a knack for breaking your heart though she never obliterates it before putting it back together again, somehow stronger for the experience.

I adored this book from start to finish. The protagonist, Grace Winter, was relatable and gritty and I found the slow creep of the Spanish Flu into the narrative particularly affecting given our recent years. The romantic elements were a guilty pleasure I couldn't get enough of. And I wept solidly through the entire epilogue a final skilled flourish on an already perfect story.

New York Times investigative reporter Grace Winter longs to make her mark as a correspondent. When America enters the war in 1917 she sees her opportunity, but between rumours of the Spanish Flu and rising anti-German sentiments, it seems impossible her dreams will come to fruition. Soon her connection to enigmatic priest, Father Jude, catapults Grace on a mission behind enemy lines in occupied France.

But as the war escalates their friendship and loyalties take a perilous turn for the worse. As questions rise about her fated relationship with Father Jude, her life and those she loves are at risk. And when Charlie Ryan’s tiny silver music box ends up in her possession, the unsolved mystery tempts Grace to continue her investigations into his disappearance and further complicates her mission.

“Set against a backdrop of WWI and spanning three continents, this heart-stopping story of forbidden love and courage explores the nature of faith, the quest for redemption and the true meaning of grace.

This action-packed story will win you over with its fabulously drawn characters striving to survive with integrity amidst the backdrop of a war-ravaged landscape.

Tania Farrelly has a wonderful way with words: as in her previous book, there are passages of scintillating setting and sparkling and illuminating dialogue that vividly create the desired effect of sweeping the reader away in the storytelling.

I was immersed in the pages of War of Hearts from the beginning and its rarely told perspective makes for compelling reading. This delightful book is a fine addition to my historical fiction collection Grace’s tenacity and kindness shine through the darkness of the final thrust of WWI. What a wonderful gift this talented author has, to be able to so seamlessly draw on a unique passage of time in history and create such a captivating story.

I am always in awe of authors who write war fiction.
The research involved. Having to write in historical prose. It’s such a mammoth and I imagine, daunting undertaking. But they’re not the only reasons War of Hearts stole my heart. I used to steer clear of wartime novels for fear they’d be a yawn fest, but when they’re done right, oh my goodness! They’re such an incredible vehicle for providing a condensed history lesson that not only informs, but also entertains and moves the reader.

Tania Farrelly’s second novel delivers this magic from start to finish. It’s the story of a daring New York Times investigative reporter named Grace Winter who is arrested for committing a belligerent act, then trained to become a spy when her savvy street smarts are recognised. She is sent to work alongside Father Jude, a fearless Catholic priest, in occupied France where she goes undercover as a nurse to gather intelligence, while at the same time embarking on her own secret mission to solve the mystery surrounding a tiny silver music box sent to her by a dying soldier.

This story has it all. A forbidden love, devastating secrets, tragedy and triumph. And a cast of characters that I loved, despised and was enthralled by (including a dog who shares the same name as my dog Bruno). From the first page, I was swept up in another world a lifetime ago and carried along by the stunning storytelling, the sizzling chemistry between our hero and heroine, and the impressive attention to detail about the conditions and circumstances of this period in our past. I also learnt how to crack codes, hide and find top secret information, and treat various medical conditions with limited resources. How good is that! Five-stars good, if you ask me.

Another World War One book, I hear you sigh? You won't want to miss Tania Farrelly's contribution with it's unique perspective told from the point of view of Grace Winter, polyglot New York reporter, who becomes part of the spy network behind enemy lines in German-occupied France, disguised as a Red Cross Nurse.
Tania concentrates on the last year of the war, but also her heroine's search for truth and the missing piece to a puzzle she has been working on for a long time.

Strong and engaging characterisation is the hallmark of this tale. I particularly enjoyed the other key characters: a doe-eyed Australian country teen who takes up the call to arms; a resolute and enterprising Jesuit priest who is dedicated to protecting his flock; a cheroot-smoking nun with a fierce soccer kick; a gruff New Yorker editor who does his best to protect a girl caught in the machinations of war, she's too naive to understand.

Tania's writing flows so smoothly, you barely notice it at first, until you marvel at the way she has been able to write a pivotal battle scene that you actually want to read - a first for me.

Also intriguing, is the amount of in-depth research apparent in her description of what was to become known as the Spanish Flu.

I was mesmerised and totally satisfied by this tender, surprising romance set against an enthralling backdrop of uncertainty and madness. Definitely worth reading.

🩵💜💕💛War of Hearts💛💕💜🩵 by @tanifarrelly_author

Set against the backdrop of WWI and inspired by real life artefacts from a museum in Brussels (a lock, a crucifix, a key and a bracelet) this captivating, meticulously-researched story has everything readers look for in a historical fiction novel: settings that spring from the page, a smart + fearless protagonist, a rich + layered plot, mystery, forbidden love, vivid descriptions and unbelievable attention to detail 🙌🏽

The protagonist is New York Times investigative-reporter-turned-secret-spy📰🔎, Grace Winter, who we follow behind enemy lines.

With her courage and grit she sets out to uncover and report back secrets, all the while haunted by the spectre of the Spanish Flu 😷

From a small South Australian outback town, to NYC and the battlefields of France, this book will sweep you up and transport you to a different time and place. Highly recommend for fans of historical fiction. OMG and that cover 😱🤩

If you are a sucker for books about courageous women at war then you will love this book by Tania Farrelly. She weaves a wonderful story about bravery, grief, loss and romance that spans three continents, Australia, America and France. Set amid the first world war not long before the Americans joined the fray, it is hard not to be captivated by her main character, Grace Winter, a journalist turned spy who teams up with Catholic priest Jude to undermine the German occupation. It's full of suspense and secrets that revolve around a miniature music box and a lost child that are slowly revealed as the story unfolds. Tania ties it all together beautifully at the end. It was hard to put down! I'm a bit in awe of the research that has gone into the book for it to capture so well the experiences of soliders on the front line of this horrendous war. It's really a great read!

Whilst I struggled to get into the story at first, by the end of the book I had enjoyed Grace Winter’s story and the complexities in the plot. Sure it was romanticised and perhaps sometimes a little bit far fetched- but I couldn’t help but be drawn into Grace’s adventures.

At times I paused listening to the book as I was getting worried what might happen next.

The details and reasons behind its development from the author showed the high amount of research and attempts to be authentic in the historical details in the book.

I loved how the author Tania so kindly acknowledged all that helped her in developing the book including visiting Europe and meeting with historians to ensure accurate historical details as much as possible.

Thanks for the book Tania - I would love to read more

War of hearts is a love story, mystery and history account of France in the 1st world war. The story also covers the impact the Spanish flu had during the war but it is primarily a book demonstrating the courage demonstrated by the people, both women and men, who put their lives on the line for the support of their country both on the front line and by implanting themselves in society to gather valuable information.
It is a great read for not only lovers of historical fiction with loads of interesting facts about the first world war in France but also for those who enjoy a little bit of mystery and a love story rolled into one.

This book had me hooked from the word go. Tina has a wonderful way with words you can literally see the characters and how they are feeling but also what they see around them.
I experienced every emotion with each character pain, sorrow, loss, love and pride!
The final chapter had me in tears but also a sense of peace in how the book ended. This was my first book of Tina’s I have read and I will be hunting the shelves for more of her work, because wow, I’m hooked.

War of Hearts is a great read. The author Tania Farrelly cleverly intertwines World War One events - trench warfare and Spanish flu with a love story, the perilous job of being a spy in the war, and a mystery surrounding a tiny music box. I loved how the story originated in Australia and then spanned to America and Europe and finally back to Australia. It was hard to put the novel down. So engaging from start to finish!

In the torrent of history, every individual is like a tiny domino, easily knocked over by war, pandemics, accidents, pressures, and various other factors. But it is up to each to pick themselves up. I really appreciate Tania’s delicate portrayal of individuals in this heart-wrenching journey, as if I experienced it myself - feeling deep sorrow and weeping, yet in the very end, regaining hope and moving forward.

In 1917 journalist Grace is writing for the New York Times. She meets Father Jude and they meet up again later in occupied France. It is a story of courage and a woman facing challenges of the heart and life during wartime. Inspired by true events I found the writing a bit jarring at times (maybe needed a better edit) but it was engaging once I got into it. The ending and resolutions did seem a bit rushed.

War of Hearts took me on a wonderful journey into the hearts of characters I felt I’d befriended; and also to New York, Australia and France during the WWI. I was transported and transfixed and couldn’t put it down. I feel sad today that I’ve finished this amazing book and envious that my husband has only just begun his journey. I learnt a lot and I felt a lot. 100% recommend.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down once the action started in Europe. You were instantly transported to Europe in WW1, which was fascinating because, like many people, I know more about WW2 than WW1. Interspersed with intriguing non-war plot twists, I didn't want the story to end. Highly recommended!

I love historical fiction that gives me new information. Hardly surprising, but I knew little of anti German sentiment at the start of WW1 , in America. I loved Grace's feistiness. The research into the experiences of people at war was well done. The story of Avery Love that is intertwined with the war experience is just so intriguing. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I was excited to read this, as Tania Farrelly’s debut ‘The Eighth Wonder was one of my favourite books last year. Her ability to create memorable, compelling characters that come to life in your imagination has not changed with War of Hearts. Such a beautiful story, set amidst WW1, Tania gives just enough of the heartache and harrowing disregard for life that those at the front lines experienced, whilst keeping your focus on the spirit and drive of the main character, Grace. I loved all the supporting characters, whose relationships I was so invested in (yes there were tears) and the storyline was weaved perfectly. Highly recommend for a great holiday read!
