Rules for Rule Breaking

Rate this book
Booksmart meets Never Have I Ever in this debut YA rom-com about two Korean American teens forced into a shared college visit road trip where they discover that the reasons they’ve been rivals their entire lives might actually be signs they’re a perfect pair.

Winter Park and Bobby Bae are Korean American high school juniors whose families have been friends since the kids were making crayon art. They, however, are repulsed by each other.

Winter is MIT-bound, comfortable keeping people at arm’s length, and known by others as responsible, though she has a desire to let loose. This probably comes from her rebel grandmother, who is constantly pushing boundaries and encouraging Winter to do so as well. Winter’s best friend is moving abroad and won’t be attending college at all, and Winter’s wrestling with what it means to be left behind. Bobby is as Type-A, anxious, and risk-averse as you can get. He’s also been recently dumped, which has him feeling disoriented and untethered.

That’s why, when Winter’s and Bobby’s parents insist that they go on a northeast college campus tour together, both teens find reasons to accept even though the thought of being stuck in a car together for 700 miles sounds unbearable. What awaits them is a journey of self-discovery where the only rule on their road trip is to break all the rules. At first, this happens in hilariously calculated ways (using lists and reason and logic!), but they soon abandon that, challenging each other to dares in Virginia, getting high and wandering around Philly for food—and battling the subsequent digestive distress—and crashing a party in Cambridge. And, of course, realizing that they’re perfect together.

4.5 stars ˖

i absolutely ADORED this book it was so cute!! i think its now one of my fav rom coms everrr
this was just so fun and cutesy so if u haven’t read it, what are u doing with ur life?? drop everything and pick it up rn 🥰

₊˚ෆ plot :

rules for rule-breaking follows winter park and bobby bae: academic rivals who have hated each other since they were kids. because their families are really close, they have never been able escape each other. however, their parents convince winter and bobby to put their differences aside and go on a road trip tg to visit some colleges!!

₊˚ෆ thoughts :

i really liked how this was book wasn’t like other rivals to lovers where the characters are overly immature or too petty. winter and bobby didn’t get along but nothing that either of them argued about truly upset them. their banter was so perfect and adorbs!! despite them being basically opposites, they both balance each other out and suit each others personalities SO well.

usually in most academic rivals to lovers books, the mmc is effortlessly smart and views the rivalry as a silly challenge while the fmc is more serious and tries sm harder but somehow does worse. however, this book was much more believable in the sense that both winter + bobby put in a realistic amount of effort in school so that was a nice change ig.

so i was originally considering rating this 5 stars but the ending ruined it ☹️. it was just so underwhelming and smth happened in the last 10% which just really annoyed me. however, i still think this book is so well written and i really enjoyed reading it.

₊˚ෆ characters :

winter is literally one of my fav fmcs ever!! she’s so cute and funny i loved her character so much mannn
she carried the conversations and i was never bored while reading her chapters.

she’s super kind and the sweetest girl ever. i love how she’s such an overachiever like omg queen i aspire to be like u!!!!

i also really liked how when her mistakes were pointed out, she didn’t try to deny them or get mad over it. instead, she acknowledged them and worked towards fixing them literally immediately.

“She’d always liked space because it made everything seem small, but it seemed that she had shrunk her world so much that she left no room for anything or anyone else.

what’s not to love about bobby (other than his name) ?? he’s the realest character ever and litch my twinnn. if something goes wrong, he cries. he’s angry? he cries. somebody hates him? he cries. who let him be this relatable??? someone find me a man like him who does skin care with me and braids my hair plsplspls 🙏🙏🙏

bobby is portrayed as this super organised and perfectionist character. he hates messing anything up
and is such a people pleaserrr.

bobby’s love for winter was the cutest and purest thing ever like omg i need a bobby in my life rn!!!!

”bobby, why do u have so many sheet masks?

₊˚ෆ writing :

this book is super fast paced and really easy to follow. if ur looking for a cute wholesome romance book to read this is perfect for u!! i want to write the perfect review to sum up my emotions while reading this book but i genuinely cannot. im so bad at putting my thoughts/ feelings into sentences and i don’t think any words can describe my love for it so please go read it for yourself!!

₊˚ෆ ‼️slight spoilers‼️ :

i wasn’t really satisfied with the ending. all that buildup for barely a love confession?? ugh it was just so underwhelming. i guess winter kind of told him she likes him but that’s pretty much it. i don’t think bobby even told her about his feelings. the ‘breakup part was also super annoying and unnecessary. everything was going great and winter just had to get mad over some little thing he did. other than that i enjoyed the rest of the book

₊˚ෆ quotes :

”You seem like nothing bothers you. Absolutely everything bothers me. Any little thing, and I crumble.

“No, Bobby. You need to feed me.

“He’d always had a burning rage toward Winter but felt her absence in equal measure.

“You’re so smart, it’s infuriating.

“She was so beautiful with her nearly black eyes and parted pink lips. The ridiculous, neat braid he’d put in her hair had to go though.

“But after the tears dried, I decided to wait you out until the teasing stopped. At some point, I think I forgot to keep waiting, but now I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t have.

“Bobby wanted to keep her smiling, so he ran to a food truck nearby and bought her a shawarma with extra tahini sauce.

“It would violate every single one of our rules.
“That’s the point, isn’t it?

“I know, but I’ve always had this loneliness that was only for you.

Rules for Rule Breaking wasn't a new favorite for me, but it includes some fun elements that will be appealing to teen readers.

The story follows main characters Bobby and Winter who have known each other since childhood, but find themselves in constant competition that has developed into a bitter rivalry. Due to a recent break-up (Bobby's girlfriend breaks up with him), their parents decide it might be good for the two of them to take a road trip together to do a college campus tour. What starts off as a rough adventure full of rules quickly turns into a unforgettable trip and an unexpected romance.

What Works: Tucker did a good job bringing up familial relationships and expectations that are deeply connected to the Asian experience. Bobby and Winter both feel pressures that ultimately connect them more than divide them. There were also some really great points of banter between Bobby and Winter. They genuinely do not get along so it was an interesting experience as a reader to watch the evolution of their relationship and how they eventually begin to find common ground. The road trip element was also fun and I could see how that could be rewarding/exciting for readers that are on the cusp of graduating and attending college.

What Didn't Work: Unfortunately, I found this book to be underdeveloped/immature in the sense that it doesn't do much beyond scratching the surface. Tucker introduces some pretty complex topics (as mentioned in the previous section) and I wish that more time was spent developing those aspects of the book to provide a more well rounded narrative. So much time is spent on the romance between the two characters that the overall plot feels weak. It doesn't feel like much happened which is disappointing considering the potential. This doesn't mean it was a bad book, but Tucker had the opportunity to make more of an impact with relatable characters and experiences. Unfortunately, the story failed to reach that mark. Also, it's rather interesting because the authorial tone of this book falls on the spectrum of a younger teen audience, but the age of the characters and some of the content appear to target an older audience. Part me questions whether Tucker had difficulty in determining what age demographic of teens would be interested in picking this story.

Overall, a light story that missed out on some potential. As other reviewers have stated before me, it's a solid choice if a reader is looking for a light contemporary romance.

⋆˙⟡ "you seem like nothing bothers you. absolutely everything bothers me. any little thing, and i crumble."

my thoughts. 🤍
ㅤㅤthis was a pretty cute book, but it was nothing special to me. i have a list of thoughts in my notes app so i'm just going to do bullet points bc i'm lazy 😭
unfortunately this book felt pretty insta-lovey. the two characters randomly admitted to liking each other after not showing attraction in their thoughts/actions at all for like first like 70% of the book. they loathed each other for most of the book and it was definitely a quick switch-up
i really loved how winter (fmc) and emmy's (her best friend) grandmas had built such a strong friendship even though they spoke different languages. they made their own language of sorts and i thought that was so sweet. i wish that we could have gotten more of them!
i would have loved to read more about kai (bobby's best friend) and emmy as characters
i did end up liking the last five-ish chapters more than the rest of the book lmao

winter. 🥞
ㅤㅤi honestly don't have much to say about her. she's not one of my favorite fmcs but she's not the worst either. i guess she just didn't really stick out to me

bobby. 🧇
ㅤㅤhe was a little more complex with his family background and stuff and i wish we got a little more on that

bottom line. 💐
ㅤㅤi did like this book and i would recommend it if you're looking for something cute, fast-paced, and under 350 pgs. it wasn't exactly what i expected bc i heard that it was similar to ann liang and it wasn't completely. the only similarities were probably the trope and asian rep

I feel as though I read a rough draft rather than a completed novel. Rules for Rule Breaking had all the right variables that could have made it a spectacular read, but nothing was really explored in depth.

Bobby and Winter are both incredibly relatable characters. I think they accurately represent the more traditional Asian families. They had a lot of thoughts and feelings that I could relate to, from things like Bobby being ashamed of not knowing how to speak Korean, to Winter pretending that everything comes easy to her when in fact she works so hard. Definitely appreciated them.

Now the story is where the low rating comes from. The story was incredibly shallow. There were a lot of themes that could have been explored culture, family, friendships, responsibility, society but everything took a backseat to the romance. Normally, I'd be okay with a romance-forward, mindless read, but it seems like a waste to have all of these themes right in front of you, only to have them not be extensively discussed.

This wasn't one of the worst YA contemporaries I've read (it's definitely not bad, either), but there was definitely a lot of wasted potential in this. I just wanted it to be more than what it was.

one road trip across the country viewing colleges, two childhood nemesis turned academic rivals, what could possibly go wrong? turns out a lot can 😂

thank you so much talia tuck for writing this book, and giving me winter and bae, and thank you colored pages book tours for sending me this eARC and having me on this tour! i appreciate this a lot <3

💭 overthinking people pleaser mmc
🎯 responsible kid fmc
💖 the most realistic coming-of age-story
💌 wholesome friendships
🚗 an epic road trip

this debut novel is a perfect read, filled with fun, chaos, raw emotions, realistic characters and family dynamics, rule-breaking and imperfect people. a book where you might think they're annoying but honestly, they're just real characters like us who make mistakes and take time accepting them. i will protect these two for life!

☾⋆⁺₊🌅✨𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ winter park

"She’d always liked space because it made everything seem small, but it seemed that she had shrunk her world so much that she left no room for anything or anyone else."

our tea drinking, space loving girl. her best friend is her rebel grandma who is such a joy! winter is an absolute mood, especially with her ease of being alone. she has no qualms about being by herself, and yet yearns to be able to let loose. she's stuck in this rivalry against bobby (the only other asian kid in the area) and hates having to bow down to him. so obviously she does everything to be first, and wins :) but again she aint perfect, she's only human. she finds herself making everyone stay at an arms length, and doesnt know how to fix this.

☾⋆⁺₊🌅✨𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ bobby bae

"Never in a million years did he think he’d get advice that could potentially alter the trajectory of his life from someone who was using her sleeve as a napkin. And never in a trillion years did he think that person would be Winter Park."

this is the sweetest boy to ever exist on earth. i mean this boy is literally the boy version of me! anything goes wrong, we cry. anything bad happens, we cry. we need everyone to like us? check :( we definitely need therapy. and oh he just got freshly dumped! so he decides lets throw caution to the wind and do the college trip.

this boy was so in love with our winter, he literally does everything she asks. but he was just in denial to actually acknowledge it as love.

☾⋆⁺₊🌅✨𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ them <3

“What would you know about my relationship or any relationship for that matter? You’ve never dated anyone. You barely even have any friends.
“At least I’m not desperate for everyone to love me.

god put these two in the same room and knew they'd be the most chaotic existence ever and so made sure they interacted very less. but lets just say, they decided to take fate into their own hands and went on that trip. and that trip was just the thing the two of them needed! it became their adventure to finally break some rules and the rules they break were so hilarious 🤣

moreover, this trip helped the two understand what they were lacking in and maybe how to become better. the character arcs of these two are insane but realistic. i mean come on, a couple that heals together, stays together!

☾⋆⁺₊🌅✨𓍢ִ໋🌷͙֒ the writing

author, i need more! these two chaotic cuties were just so fun and lovely, i did not realize the pages flipping by. i did not even realize i was done with the book, until i flipped the page and was met with a blank page and i wanted to cry T-T like nooooo, i need more of this old married couple.

all in all this book is simply amazing, with such vivid writing that immediately transports you into that car along with these two about to take the most life-changing road trip of their life ;)

rules for rule breaking is out now! run to your nearest bookstore and grab your copy now.

༉ħ₊˚. "You want us to make rules for our rule breaking?

this was such a cute read omg! first of all, the cover?! so pretty. like look at the colors! absolutely stunning. i adored the writing soo much, it was so light and fun and fitted the story perfectly. there were so many aspects of this book, not just romance; and i deeply appreciated that. it spoke about culture, anxiety, pressure, familial drama, and platonic friendships. i always love a book that has a range of topics.

but the romance which was the main part of this book... oof, it was so good. childhood family friends who are forced together daily but are rivals in every possible way? not something i thought i needed until i read this. THE BANTER AHH!! I ALWAYS LOVE!! BANTER!!

.☽༊˚ ❄️ winter first, the names of the characters in this book were so interesting haha. i liked her as a character; she was a driven fmc who strived towards her goals. some of the things she felt regarding platonic friendships, and moving away from everyone you know were so real to me.

.☽༊˚ 🗒 bobby ahh bobby. our little picture perfect little boy. he was truly such a funny and interesting character to me, like the little notebook he always carried around, or the way he just HAD to stick to the itinerary. truly very funny and interesting. but dang did he say some swoon-worthy stuff. but i'm sorry i just couldn't with his name, bobby bae 😭😭 i know his name is robert and everyone calls him bobby but like... i just couldn't.

.☽༊˚ 🎀 side characters i truly loved every single one!! KAI IS MY LOOOOOOOVE THIS MAN!!! I WANT HIM AS MY BFF HE'S AMAZING I LOVE YOU. emmy was fun, i liked looking at her and winters friendship and all the aspects around that. i marked up some quotes of theirs that i liked their really funny friends, but kai and bobby in my opinion are just everything. ALSO THE GRANDMOTHER?? OMG FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN THIS WHOLE BOOK!! SHE DESERVES IT ALL!! we literally wouldn't really have this book if it weren't for her. be my grandmother please and thank you 🥹

Her mind was always on another plane of existence, and he didn't want to bring her down to his level. In fact, he wanted to elevate himself to hers. we love bobby bae in this household.

''This isn't a competition.'' ''Isn't it always with us?''

i'm an academic rivals to lovers girl till the day i die, and this book just gave me exactly what i want. i couldn't be happier 🥹 (ann liang fans, this book is for you!!)

''I can have fun after school, when I get the job I want.''

our fmc, winter (her name is so unique and cute wth) is what you call an academic-machine. she is EXCELLING in high school, ap classes, strives to study in MIT in the future, etc. she's also a reader?? i want to be her friend fr ''At lunch she always had her nose in some cozy mystery novel..'' (she's who i want to be tbh)

her relationship with bobby bae (i know, his name is- different?) is hilarous. i have never smiled so much when reading (except when reading ann liang's books), and their banter was so well done, where it didn't feel forced, or that they were just saying things to ''bully'' eachother. i also LOVED bobby. his people pleasing nature?? twins. we also see a part of his panic attacks, anxiety, so much more. i appreciated that because it is so rare to see a mmc with issues like this, yet they are PRESENT. we need to talk about it more.

''He didn't like to admit it, and people rarely saw it, but it didn't take very much to get a tear or two out of Bobby Bae.''

i was very close to rating this 5 stars, but the ending was really dissapointing. 150+ pages for nothing (ifykyk.) i would've loved it if the ending was more satisfying, and we got the full thing (if that makes sense?) nontheless, i really enjoyed this, it was like free seratonin in a bottle <3 (if anyone knows books that have the same feels, please send them my way.)

We Asian girlies definitely won with Talia’s sweet debut ya romcom about two Korean American teens going on a 100-mile road trip. The catch? They have hated each other their whole lives. Never Have I Ever meets I Hope This Doesn’t Find you in this coming-of-age story where we’ll see what could possibly go wrong with breaking the rules Winter Park and Bobby Bae have in writing, and the possibility that they may just be the perfect match.

I genuinely indulged myself in this book! This was the first romcom I have read that really served banter and hilarious forced proximity. The main characters had great chemistry and inevitably allows the reader to relate to their story. I also appreciated the fact that teenagers were finally written to act their own age, with all that immaturity and stubbornness. Not only that, but this book tackles family and the growing pains of friendship and young love. We have characters who are sensitive, and equally smart and strong and are trying to make sense of their place in a world that’s suddenly too overwhelming for them to navigate. Rules for Rule Breaking shares a heartfelt message with its readers.

If you like:
- academic rivals
- college tour road trips
- breaking rules for the first time
- nerds with dry senses of humor

Then you absolutely have to read Rules for Rule Breaking by Talia Tucker out on 3/19!

I truly have not had so much fun reading a book in a while. Rules for Rule Breaking had me laughing out loud, tearing up, and rooting for these two awkward nerds.

Winter and Bobby are the most lovable main characters. Their flaws were so relatable and well developed on the page, I could feel their struggles. I absolutely fell in love with their little quirks and passions. The side characters Kai and Emmy were also such vibrant characters. I really enjoyed the tension in Winter and Emmy's relationship and how they resolved it in such a healthy and understanding way.

Tucker's writing absolutely stands out. Her sense of humor was so deadpan and well utilized, I highlighted so many interactions. I truly am just enamored with her writing style, I need more books from Tucker asap please!

A side note that there are a number of niche New Jersey jokes in the book that absolutely warmed by heart (excessive cursing, jug handles, pumping gas).

I cannot wait for this book to come out so I can have a copy on my shelf!

First of all, Ms. Talia Tucker, how did you take my boyfriend and turn him into a character? 😂 Seriously, I kept sending him parts of the book and saying, “This is you! Both Bobby Bae and my boyfriend love waffles because the pockets evenly spread syrup and butter (he’s literally told me this lol), collect expensive/name brand pens (he’s got a small box full of his collection), are lactose intolerant yet milk-obsessed, and would 1000% explain the difference between paper and parchment while inside a stationary store (the other day he was explaining yarn types to me). It's uncanny!

"Rules for Rule Breaking" is the cutest frenemies-to-lovers story. Bobby and Winter have known each other their whole lives but can't stand each other—until a road trip to visit colleges changes everything. Their banter was so spot on that I found myself bookmarking nearly every page because it was so funny. There were so many adorable moments that made their relationship and it’s progression special.

I also loved how Talia Tucker added in important topics like friendships, college, family relationships, and growing up Asian in a non-Asian community. These subplots matched the overall fun vibe, while still playing an important role to the development of the story. I also think it is important because it reflected real life in the sense that important aspects of our identity might not always dominate our thoughts but still shape who we are.

This story is a perfect summer read, especially if you're heading to college or starting something new. It validates that feeling of uncertainty because the world around you is changing, while still providing a lighthearted romance 💖. AND thank you Talia for hosting a giveaway for your book! I’m so thankful that I was able to win the absolute cutest story!

I am here for an academic rivals romance!! Winter and Bobby were a great pairing and I enjoyed their development throughout the story. Learning more about Korean culture was also cool and I enjoyed that representation. As an oldest child, I felt the pressure that both of them put on themselves to always be right and perfect. It was great to see them flourish and break out of their shells on the road trip. Speaking of road trips, I love that type of plot. Talia executed it so well, too. The friendships and shenanigans were cute and I liked where the story ended up. Also Halmeoni was a fantastic side character and I loved every time she was present in the story. The rules were so cute and I like how they introduced each chapter. Overall, this was a cute read! Thank you to Penguin Teen for sending me an e-ARC to read and review!

“Her cheeks puffed out as she chewed on the grass jelly. Bobby was deeply charmed and overwhelmed with the sheer cuteness. He didn’t know what was wrong with him. It was like a dam had broken inside of his own body, and all that discipline he’d been restraining himself with for years wasn’t enough to stop him from grinning like a fool.

૮꒰ ˶ •˶꒱ I ABSOLUTELY ATE THIS BOOK UP IN LIKE ONE SITTING LMAOO
it was a super cute short ya romance and I loved it sm 😍😍

⪩⪨ things i loved...

I LOVED ALL OF THE CHARACTERS.
the depth and character development was through the roof and I was shocked to find out this was a debut novel! I also loved the funny-but-realistic portrayal of Asian parent expectations and what it means to grow up in the United States as an Asian. There were a lot of cute moments between the main characters that made me actually laugh out loud and the book was impossible to put down! ❤️❤️

⪩⪨ things i didn't love...

I honestly didn't really understand why the mmc was so hung up over his ex. especially when he already established that he never really liked her? and the fmc suddenly doubting her abilities to get into her dream college when she was so confident before? the misunderstandings also made me rage but I say that for every book so ig it technically doesn't count 😂. I also didn't like how long it took for them to get to the actual road trip part, the whole intro was just them elaborating on how much they hate each other. the ending was also pretty similar, it took them a pretty long time to accept their feelings for each other and that didn't really make that much sense to me but who am I to judge.

⪩⪨ overall review...

though this book did have its flaws I enjoyed it A LOT and recommend it to anyone who loves a quick read with a lot of swoon worthy moments!

also the amount of times I giggled while reading this book was a little unhealthy-

Finished the audiobook in pretty much one sitting, and this is such a cute YA romcom! I'm honestly a bit tired of the enemies/rivals to lovers trope, but it felt fresh and fun here.

2.5* this was very cute and i love road trip plots (+ the forced proximity in this), however I’ve been in such a slump during this, that I dragged out finishing it, despite the very short chapters unfortunately i included this into my rating, but i do think if you enjoy ya romance novels you’d like this<3

There were probably two lines in this book that I actually liked. The entire story felt nonsensical
