I’m a sucker for surprise endings, and Seitz delivers with “Secrets can’t be kept forever. What initially appears as a clear case of kidnapping and embezzlement turns into the much more complicated drama of a dysfunctional family. While crime reporter Ace Herron battles his own demons of his disintegrating marriage, he stumbles upon murder victim Vern’s recorded audio log. Vern no longer appears as a hardened criminal who took off with his employer’s money, but as a man driven by desperation. Married to a schizophrenic and abused by her equally insane family, he unsuccessfully tried to start a new life. Ace finds himself feeling nothing but pity for this man who was so clearly pushed to the brink, and is determined to bring his murderer to justice.
The plot moves along refreshingly fast with no long, dragging descriptions (which, quite frankly, often only serve to showcase a writer’s “talent). I enjoyed the read, and would certainly follow Ace Herron along on future adventures.

This book was a real find! It kept me guessing from start to finush. I literally couldn't put it down. I haven't been up past 2:00 with a book since college, but I was with SECRETS. Stephen Seitz is a master storyteller. The detail and vibrant personality he brings to the world of Ace Herron shows that this is a world Mr. Seitz has lived, not just written about. And it is one hell of a ripping yarn to boot! I make it a habit and custom of reading mysteries each summer while I'm on vacation, and I have a feeling Ace Herron and I are going to be beach companions for a long, long time.

My son gave me this book for my birthday since it was a Springfield, Vermont author. I felt that I should give it a shot, and to my surprise I really liked it. While bits of it could have have had some further editing, It was very engrossing and I was really caught up in it. Ace Herron is a great character. I hope there will be a sequel!

I only made it 20% in and gave up on this. There were mistakes in it plus I found the writing style to be pretty juvenile and it was starting to get on my nerves.
From the first page the newspaper report was dated Aug 27th then further down the page we learn the kidnapping occurred on Aug 17th. Bit of a difference !! Then the word was was in a sentence and not needed.
What annoyed me and I found all a little daft was Ginny's decision to start a relationship with a colleague and the description of this. It was akin to the thoughts and choices made by a fifteen year old girl as opposed to a wife and mother of twenty plus years. It was too unbelievable for me.
I did get a chuckle out of the name of the estate agency in it, though-Burke & Ayre !!

A book about a taboo subject, that isn't really all that educational or exploitative, or even entertaining. I really felt like the author squashed a couple of short stories together, and neither of them were all that great.
