Proxy is an action-packed introduction to a world like nothing readers have seen before, and it sets a spark to the powder keg that will explode in Mindee Arnett's sci-fi thriller Avalon.

If you need something stolen from any star system in the Confederation, you need look no further than the Shades. Jeth Seagrave and his band of teenage mercenaries have been making a name for themselves for being able to steal anything—and for disappearing before anyone is the wiser. Their latest job, a jewel heist on Grakkus, should be no different. But when Jeth's boss replaces a key member of his crew just before takeoff, and Jeth discovers a betrayal within his own ranks, he begins to suspect that not everyone is going to be coming back from his job alive.

This is a prequel novella for the Avalon duology, and it does a decent job of introducing the set up and the main characters. I'm not sure it's completely essential, though it's sometimes hard to say in advance with prequels.

Proxy is supposed to be released BEFORE Avalon but I got to read Avalon before Proxy's release. What kind of cruel joke is this? I need this now! Better yet, I NEED book 2 NOW!

This was an okay story and I liked the action. I did lose interest after a while though, which is exactly what happened with the first book in this series.

Yet another freebie I've had sitting on my Kindle for ages. Entertaining prequel novella, might have to check out the rest of this series some time.

SECOND READ: December 16, 2014

THOUGHTS AFTER REREAD: It's still an impressive novella! Sets the stage for the series by introducing these characters, and letting them have a little adventure.

Proxy is a seriously strong novella. As it's set a little before the events of Avalon, it works its magic when it comes to building up my curiosity and investment in the series.

Proxy introduces us to Jeth Seagrave and his legendary teenage crew. It was really cool to get a chance to meet them, assess their skills and get an idea of what they're like. Even though readers don't really get the chance to go in-depth with these individuals, it still gives a great impression of what can be expected.

It's even better that readers get to witness the crew in action, as they're tasked to go on an extremely difficult mission during Proxy. Learning how their missions work, and watching how everyone contributes to its success (even when random shenanigans go down), is really interesting. I was certainly amazed by the sheer level of talent, ingenuity and intelligence demonstrated!

It really excited me to be able to read Proxy before reading Avalon. It was the perfect way to get to know these characters, see them in action and get fully invested. I enjoyed reading about Jeth and his crew, and couldn't wait to dive into Avalon right after.

Proxy introduces people who you'll see in book 2 so I recommend reading this before you read Polaris.

Very great addition to the series. Read it all with out taking a break. Not as good as Avalon but very well written and besides its shorter and if it was longer it would be just as good as avalon😊 I rated this book 5 stars because it is an amazing book and i love this series so far. I liked the suspense and future like aspect. The only thing i disliked is that its only 90 pages and I wish it was longer but its a great short novel for a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sci fi.

Fantasy Sci-Fi listening 🔰

Due to eye damage Alexa reads to me, a very will written thriller fantasy Sci-Fi adventure. The characters are interesting and family and friends. The story line is complicated, fast moving, violent, and about relationships between family and friends growing up. I would recommend this novella to readers of fantasy Sci-Fi adventures. Enjoy reading 📚 2021 😮

Proxy is a novella introducing a group of teenage thieves that star in this series while on a mission to steal a priceless ruby from an on-planet emperor. We get to know the characters as they get ready for their mission and run into unforeseen problems. Their biggest problem is being betrayed. This sci-fi adventure was fastpaced and fun. Looking forward to the main books in the series.

Oh man! I’m so sad to give this book such a low rating. I loved Mindee Arnett’s other books and was so looking forward to this one but I just couldn’t get through it. I kept falling asleep and the story was not gripping me, so I decided not to continue reading it. Bummer. I haven’t given up on Mindee though. I’ll read any other books she decides to write.

A quaint, quick, easy-to-read introduction to the characters and their backstories for Avalon. Not long, but chock full of the same level of action from Avalon. Pleasant prequel.

A spacefaring crew of teenage thieves? An exciting universe populated by monarchies, competing crime lords, a (possibly insidious) pervasive bureaucratic organization? A conflicted thief who wants nothing more than the safety of his sister and to regain ownership of his family’s spaceship? A beautiful, yet ruthless, rival?

Ok. Yes. I want more of this, please.

Orphaned with his means of freedom leveraged over him, Jeth Seagrave finds himself leader of the Malleus Shades, a gang of thieves who do the bidding of the crime lord Hammer, while trying to earn enough to buy back his ship and get his younger sister away from the dangers of the criminal underworld. Their current job? Steal a sacred ruby from the Grakkan emperor’s bed chamber.

Easy peasy, right? Well, what fun would it be if everything went according to plan? And things definitely, definitely do not go according to plan. *cue danger, excitement and more danger*

This 90-page prequel novella does a great job at setting the stage for Avalon revealing fascinating glimpses of the characters, the world(s), the dynamics, the obstacles, the risks, and the consequences. It’s fantastic, and it made me want more of Jeth’s and the Malleus Shades stories. So, in regard to world and character building, Proxy shines. The heist, however, I found a tad oversimplified. (Put plainly, if the emperor’s security is that easy to breach, then he deserves to have his precious ruby stolen.) But even so, the plot has some fun twists and turns, sometimes becoming a bit darker than I anticipated (with some possibly very ominous foreshadowing), which of course, only increases my curiosity. All in all, I found it to be very enjoyable.

And because it’s unavoidable to draw a comparison, for those of you wondering yes. Yes, this story does have a bit of a Firefly-esque feel to it the over-arcing theme of family, semi-honorable thieves, an oppressive governing authority, a dangerous and sinister underworld, and an anti-hero hero who operates within the realm of the morally gray. That, and it has the potential to be both great sci-fi and an interesting character ensemble piece.

Overall, with the stage now set and the players in motion, I’m excited to see where Arnett will take Jeth and the Malleus Shades. Considering me eagerly awaiting Avalon.

In a nutshell...
- Necessary? I cannot say for certain, as I have not yet read Avalon.
- POV? Jeth Seagrave
-Where does it fit? It’s a prequel to the series.
-Prior Knowledge needed? No.

Proxy is a prequel Novella to a book called Avalon releasing early next year. In Proxy we learn a little bit about the world Jeth and his sister Lizzie live in and also what sort of work they do as members of the Shades crew.

What I liked about this Novella was how it set the world and the people within it without divulging too much about the characters in the process. For instance we learn that the Shades are compiled primarily by Teenagers and that by 20 most age out of the group. However, we don't learn the specific reasons why this is so. Another thing we learn about is Jeth's relationship with his sister. She's the greenhorn of the operation and Jeth definitely isn't happy about this. Yet, Lizzie is kept quite mysterious. We know she's tech savvy but not really how she became so since it seems Jeth is away from her quite a bit. Also it is implied she is favored by their boss Hammer but is it out of a Father's type love or are more sinister machinations afoot?

Another thing I liked about Proxy was the pacing. The suspense was kept all the way through while still providing plenty of action and drama in the process. This is certainly a credit to Mindee Arnett's writing as I never found myself bored while reading this even while being waylaid by technical jargon that could of easily killed the pacing of the story.

Lastly, I liked the characters. Jeth seems like a cross between Dean Winchester and Peter Pan. He's the older brother, the protector always looking out for Lizzie. Yet, by being older he knows his time with the Shades is limited and so he needs to seize life by the balls so to speak and make the most out of his time in the here and now while he can. I also liked Celeste. While the novella has absolutely zero romance I think that Celeste and Jeth might become something later on. Of course maybe I'm wrong and just seeing something that doesn't exist.

Final Thoughts
If you like Science Fiction mixed with action, adventure and a tiny bit of drama then I'd highly suggest picking this Novella up and giving it a go. After reading Proxy I am looking forward to Avalon when it releases. Speaking of which the Novella comes with a chapter preview and it is just as good if not better than Proxy. I can't wait to see more from this cast of characters. With that being said, I will be rating Proxy by Mindee Arnett ★★★★.

Proxy is the prequel novella to Mindee Arnett's new sci-fi novel Avalon. This new space thriller is a great introduction to the the sci-fi world of Avalon and it's characters. There's plenty of action, snappy dialogue, and a pace that's warp-speed.

In Proxy we get to meet Jeth Seagrove, his younger sister Lizzie, and the rest of his crew, a group of ragtag teens with a knack for thievery, known as the Shades. These young mercenaries each have a special talent that they bring to group, and Mindee Arnett does a great job of giving each of them a unique voice and personality.

The story and action takes off immediately, this sci-fi thriller has no dull moments. I enjoyed learning about Jeth and the back-story behind the ship Avalon, the loss of his parents, and how he came to be working under the infamous crime lord Hammer Dafoe. I loved the immediately sense of camaraderie among the crew and their space adventures. It was fun having the story told through Jeth's point of view, and I was immediately drawn to his character. There's just something about being inside a male characters head, hearing their perspective on things that I find fascinating- especially when he's a young teen and the setting is a science fiction thriller.

I can't wait to read Mindee Arnett's novel Avalon and continue the story of Jeth and the Shades in Avalon. I gave this novella 3.5 stars. I liked the story and I'm totally excited for Avalon, but I had a hard time rating it any higher due to it's short length.

My Rating: 3.5 Stars. I liked it!

I wasn't sure I was going to read this short story, despite wanting to for over a year. But then I finished Polaris today. And I had to read it. I had to know more about Jeth. And the new character, Aileen. I'm glad I read this. Proxy takes place before Avalon starts, and I enjoyed reading it so much. It's exciting.

I don't want to share too much about this short story, as it isn't very long, but I really liked it. Had a few smallish issues, which is why this is a four star, but mostly I loved all of it. I loved getting to read more about Jeth, whom I've grown to love. Sigh. And his little sister Lizzie. She's all kinds of amazing. Adore her.

While this is pretty short, we still get to know a lot of things. I loved getting to read more about Jeth and his crew. And I might like them all a little bit more. Maybe. We also get to meet Aileen, and I do wish there will be something more about her after Polaris. Such an interesting character. Crossing my fingers. <3 The story in this short is pretty exciting. It's fast and fun to read. There is a party and awesome clothes. There are betrayals. And more space. And just yeah. I enjoyed getting to read more from Jeth. I'm so glad I decided to read this short story. If you've read Avalon and haven't read Proxy yet, I really think you should do so. As this one was pretty amazing :) I enjoyed the writing and the characters a whole lot.

A good quick read with a nice glimpse of what's to come- or what has been if you're reading this post-Avalon as I am.
I liked getting to see them on a job again. It was fascinating seeing how Lizzie broke in with the crew, but I almost wish it had the old tech person on the job so that we could see how they worked in that circumstance. It also would have shown Jeth when he was more reckless which would have been fascinating. I really loved how it brought emotion out of Jeth though. Avalon being set almost two years later Jeth has locked down his emotions quite a bit and doesn't let things like his affection for his little sister leak out. Seeing that side come to life was refreshing and also a good indicator for the book to come.
More than just a nice quick heist story. this short story has all the indicators of what is to come in Avalon and is a good test to see if you want to read the series. Or, if you've read the first book already, it's a fascinating read about what came before.

UPDATE: Having just read Polaris it turns out this is a bit more of required reading to the series as a whole. Read it either before or after Polaris, but an introduced character becomes important to the whole of the story in Polaris. Also, Arnett does not do anything to setup the character in Polaris, she mostly relies on your knowledge of her from Proxy. So, if you are interested in reading this little series, make sure to include Proxy!

maybe I am getting the YA categorisation wrong, but really, I thought this was, even for a young audience, quite rubbish...

In fact, it only got two stars, because it doesn't hurt: style, description of characters and the overall plot are, though lame, not what I would call 'bad'. They are just boring and lame.

Yes, a YA interested audeince might read it, but really, can't we be a bit more intelligent about these things?

Also, I felt that the author didn't really know what this book wanted to be: teenage thief-heros, with highly sophisticated and expensive tech, who get beaten up and who's fellows get turned into computer controlled zombies by their evil boss, but who, at the same time, don't dare use their weapons and kill someone? I mean it's nice that they don't but the way it is presented just doesn't work in the context.

And what is it with overly protective men or brothers? I mean seriously? I thought everyone had established that if you wanted that you'd be reading Shades of Grey (ok, wrong audience), but really do we constantly have to warm up these Victorian view of men and women? Oh, sorry I forgot, there is the US mid-west. Apologies...

Just a very shallow read...

Proxy is a prequel novella for the new science fiction series by Mindee Arnett.

In Proxy we meet all the main characters that we will be following in Avalon, the first book in the series, Jeth and the rest of the Shades. We are introduced to them and what they do for a living. We're thrown right away into the action and we get to know the characters by the way they act.

I was quite excited about Proxy cause it is an introduction to the world of Avalon and I'm happy to report that I'm already in love with Jeth and his band of smart misfits! I am a lover of science fiction and if Avalon is like Proxy, it is quite promising! Full of action, with enough development to make you care for them and look forward to read more about them. There were no hints at a romance at all, and I wouldn't be upset if there was none in Avalon. Not that I don't appreciate a well done romance, but I feel like I need a bit of a break and reading some adventures in space without romance taking over the plot sounds great.

There's also the first chapter of Avalon at the end of Proxy and damn, does it leave you wanting more!

4 well deserved stars to this introduction to the Avalon world.

This short novella Proxy introduces us to the Avalon crew: Jeth, Celine, Shady, Lizzie, and Flinn. Chronologically, this takes place before the start of the novel Avalon.

Our protagonists are working for Hammer and have an assignment: steal a ruby from a royal palace. Teamed up with Jeth's former team leader, the group will encounter betrayals, set backs, and sheet bad luck. What seemed like a difficult but straightforward infiltration of a royal party soon turns out to be much more.

We're also introduced to another set of characters who will show up prominently in the second book in the series, Polaris. Because of that, this is definitely worth the download.

At only 100 pages, this is a 1 hour or so read that flows smoothly and resolves completely. It can be read before or after Avalon but for most impact, I do recommend reading it before Polaris.

Man, it has been a minute since I last visited this world. But lately, I’ve been really into sci-fi and I figured I’d try and finish off this duology. BUT I read this like 8 years ago so I was definitely going to need a refresher.

So Jeth and his crew work for this crime lord and they’re on a mission to steal this giant ruby. Except things go all sorts of wrong for the crew.

This was a really fun story to revisit, especially considering that I pretty much forgot everything about it. Lol. But I really liked the main character Jeth and his sassy sister Lizzie—I loved their relationship! I really enjoyed this novella overall—the story and the action. It was fun!

I'm going with the 2-star here because, according to ŷ, 2 stars means "it was okay" and that's all this was - just okay. It's not terrible, but it's nothing special either. It's supposed to be a prequel novella to , and I think it was released before that book to give readers a "taste" of the world. Which it kind of does, but it's also not terribly interesting. I'm actually glad I read first, because if I had started with this I don't know if I would've been interested in continuing with the series.

If you're a big fan of I would say this is worth reading, but otherwise I don't think you'd miss out on much by skipping this.

I don't know what to think about this book. I am interested where the story is going but at the same time I wish there was more to the characters. It was just a sneak peak to what the characters are and I know there will be more developing in the noble.

I do like the relationship between the brother and sister. Also I do like the setting. The only thing it's bugging me is how young the characters are in this setting. I hoped they would be older.

I do see the whole comparison with Firefly which that is what got me interested in the book. I see some of the characters in these.

I may pick up the book once it's release.

Great prequel to lead off "Avalon"

I did things a bit backwards and read the novel "Avalon" before I read this prequel. I wish I had read "Proxy" first. It filled in some thin spots of the novel.

I actually enjoyed this novella a bit more than the book that follows. It is fast-paced and the momentum never ebbs. Plus there is more character development in this prequel.

But both "Proxy" and "Avalon" have fun storylines and characters I want to get to know better. I will be keeping my eyes open for the next book in the series.
