AFTER A BILLION PEOPLE WATCH YOU MAKE LOVE, WHERE DO YOU HIDE?
A fake persona with very real emotions...
As "Matt Jones," CEO playboy Michael Bournham has just stumbled into his wildest dream and worst nightmare while playing a middle-management employee role for a reality television stunt. Getting caught making love with his administrative assistant, Lydia Charles, on camera let unscrupulous Hollywood producers blackmail him before launching the video on YouTube. Fired from his job and ridiculed on social media, Mike needs to hit "reboot" on his life. Hiding Lydia away in Iceland with a made-up job, he sends his best friend Jeremy to watch over her. Meanwhile, he disguises himself once more and booked a cabin at Lydia's family's campground in Maine, to immerse himself in her world.
A best friend with deeper intentions...
After more than a decade of world travel and hedonistic fun, dot-com millionaire Jeremy wants more out of his friendship with Mike, but more than that he wants Lydia. Struck by her beauty and essence, he follows Mike's order and obeys, courting her with a friendship that quickly becomes a deeper bond, charged by Lydia's fantasies about him and Mike. Unable to resist, he becomes her confidante and bedmate, helping her to come to grips with her impulsive decisions and to find her way back home to Maine.
A woman torn by desire...
Lydia accepts the move to Iceland to become the Director of Communications for European Operations not realizing it's a sham position Michael Bournham created to help hide her from the firestorm of the viral sex tape. Living in a new country should be fun, but side glances and whispers from her new Icelandic employees dig at her. Ignored by her new boss at Bournham Industries, Lydia's disenchantment with her bold move is softened only by Jeremy's appearance. Wild and loose, he fills a void in her life and soon fills her bed.
When she decides there's no place like home, the new couple embarks for her family's campground and Jeremy's suspicious obedience will be revealed.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 5 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.
From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire in a rom com).
She also writes romantic suspense as Meli Raine, sexy shifter romances as DJ Jennings, billionaire shifters as half of the author team Diana Seere, and co-authors with Elisa Reed.
She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where she is the only person with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.
I felt like there was no point in this book. The sex tape is made public and Lydia takes the promotion in Europe but only to resign. What was the real point? I felt like I wasted my time reading this.
I'm wondering whether I read a different book than other people...
Part of the problem is that I didn't realize this was book two in a series, so I started off confused. I added a star to compensate for that mistake (otherwise the book would have gotten a one star).
So I'll try to overlook my total disbelief about any sane human being forgetting that there were cameras hidden all over his office. I'll try to ignore the fact that the world is apparently mysteriously obsessed by the sex life of a mid-level business mogul. (The only real-world business men I can think of who get much attention for their personal lives are Richard Branson and Donald Trump, both of whom clearly seek media attention like it's the only source of oxygen to sustain their lives, and both of whom would be pretty gross in a sex tape). Maybe all of these issues were somehow explained in book one?
So if I ignore all that, all I really have is a woman getting transferred to Iceland, getting groped by a guy in a bar and then sleeping with a man who casually refers to having "bitchslapped a transsexual" and who is also the best friend of the CEO who can't remember when he's in a room with cameras.
The book is stretched out with long chunks of wandering exposition and some 'banter' that makes no sense. And the only reason I can think of for the trip to Iceland is that the author wanted to visit the place herself and needed an excuse for a tax write-off.
Overall, this felt like it should have been the middle part of a regular length book - there just didn't seem to be enough there to justify a trilogy, and there certainly wasn't enough back story or cohesiveness in this book to make it work as a standalone. It feels unedited, not for grammar or punctuation but for structure and writing style. I was surprised to learn that this was from an experienced author, but not surprised to learn that it was self-published.
So this series has the dubious honor of getting me to add two new shelves to my tags list. The first new shelve is "Author owns a thesaurus" and the second is "Overdose of Angst."
I'm rating it as a series as each book has basically the same format of boy & girl meet, angst, angst, angst and one sex scene and book ends. Okay so the one sex scene is not true for book two... I think there was a whooping two maybe three at max.
The angst is so over the top that you would think that you were reading a teenage girl book.
This is another book/series that when I figure out which blogger I follow highly recommended they will be removed from my follow list. I am really getting tired of bloggers rating books four & five stars just to suck up to an author and/or publisher so that can get on more publisher lists and get free books.
I don’t know what to say about this book other than it was slow and predictable. There was no cliffhanger or mystery about what is going to happen in the third book. I don’t even know if I’ll read the final book when it comes out.
I'm writing my review for this three book series as one review because it should have been a stand alone.
Apparently there's another series about this threesome but I won't be reading it.
This series is in desperate, desperate need of an editor. I'll say that again. It's in desperate need of an editor.
I repeated myself because there are chunks of these books that literally repeat themselves. For instance, there is a conversation about anal sex that happens for the first time, twice. Yes, you've read that correctly. A first conversation that happens, word for word, twice.
The beginning of book one is rushed as though it's overdosed on caffeine. The endings of book three take so long it's like it's being dragged through treacle. Sticky and uncomfortable but not in a good way. I got angry. Not motivated by plot but by the repetition, lag and wastefulness of the plot.
I've read Julia Kent books before and they weren't as awful as this. I've read multipartner books before and they weren't as unfocused or uncomfortably unbelievable as this.
Also, the hero worship of Fifty Shades of Grey is never ending in these books. It's extremely over the top and leans away from flattering, fangirling to stalker, obsessive, annoying territory.
It is far and away lazily written.
For instance, in book one the second guy, Jeremy, is introduced into the romance as Matt/Mike's friend who lifts weight with him. They don't do it in Mike's building because the building gym is like Barbie toys. Dinky weights that will do nothing. As Matt/Mike is in disguise, he can't be seen at their normal gym, so they go running instead.
Lazy plot leads us back to Jeremy and Mike doing heavy, full weight workouts in his Barbie like, building gym in book three. Cause, that's a thing now. Just annoying to read especially after seeing so much lazy editing throughout the three books.
I don't like this series and I may never read any more of her books because of it. Which is a pity because I quite liked her characterisations in previous ones.
Ooooh no, Book 2 in the Series went down a star! What happened? This is honestly at 2.5, but I round up.
Well, that's what I'm still wondering. What happened? Not a whole heck of a lot.
I just got so sucked in by the first book, I'm kinda irritated at this one. Not to mention I didn't realize there was a THIRD book. I know, silly me, I should have checked once I figured out there was a second, so I only have myself to blame for that.
I loved the Lydia character in the first book. She was strong and opinionated. This book, she is a bit wishy-washy and unsure of herself. Yeah, there is a sex tape out of you, but it could be worse. Someone else has fessed up to it taking public blame off you, hot billionaire still wants you, friends don't hate you and your family always wants you home. What happened to her?
And Jeremy. Oh don't even get me started on this kid. I'm pulling a Michelle from Full House with the expression "HOW RUDE!". Because honestly, how rude can you get. Does he only ever have the hots for a girl his friend already likes? Especially when Mike lets it be know this could be "the One". Is 'please check on her to make sure she is okay' really guy code for 'here's the love of my life but by all means, go eff her silly so she forgets about me'? Everything in this guys head is about him, him, him ... some friend.
Yeah, I'm a little irritated with how this progressed and ended. I prob will read the third book just to finish the series, but ugh. I hope it gets better.
The Premise The second entry in the Obedient series, Lydia Charles and and Matt Jones, aka Michael Bournham (CEO of Bournham Industries) have been caught having sex in the office and their sex tape is about to go viral. Michael tries to protect Lydia by shipping her off to Iceland in a hastily made up position as Director of Communications, and sends his best friend, Jeremy to follow her and protect her, and let’s face it, hook up with her, since they’re into that.
The Good I think I like the individual characters more than the whole storyline, and I definitely liked Lydia’s family for the most part more than her.
The Bad My main problem with this series continues to be that there wasn’t a strong enough reason for this to be divided into multiple books. I think it would have been much better to have created one really good book instead of dragging it out over three smaller books.
If I put aside my annoyance at it being three books, then I have to review each one on its own merits. This entry in particular was weak because there was no resolution at all to anything - it had no real beginning or ending. Lydia and Mike spend the majority of it bemoaning what happened in the first book and Lydia finds herself intensely attracted to Jeremy in the space of a couple of days, even knowing that he’s Mike’s best friend, and possibly involved in the deception. The trip to Iceland is random and weird, and serves no purpose other than to set up Jeremy and Lydia for sex away from Mike. Also, for a series that seems designed to end in a triad relationship, I believe in the romance between Mike and Lydia way more than Lydia and Jeremy.
The Bottom Line Yeah, I don’t know why I’m going on with this series but out of all of them, this is the weakest book.
This is the second book in the Obedient series and it when it starts Lydia and Matt/Michael are "finishing up" in the office and he manages to get her out of the office and down the stairs (yep stair since the elevators have cameras close to them) without any cameras being able to see her face. She has no idea that everything has been caught on camera so off they go to dinner. Michael figures he has one last night with the love of his life because he knows he already is in love with her. So he takes her out to this really high dollar place to eat then back to her place and of course makes love to her. Nice and sweet right, Well, then he cuts out by sending her a text when she falls asleep saying he did not feel good and works on sending her clear across the world before the tapes release for all the world to see.
This book is more about Jeremy his best friend and Lydia. We get to see them come together and fall in love. We see how life falls apart for Michael. Yet at the same time his life is actually not falling apart, he just doesn't know it. I see so much that is to come in book three so why not go there on to... Deliciously Obedient next
Love this series Full of humor, angst, super-hot romance and a few twists!! 4.5 stars
Lydia has taken a job in Iceland of all places to get away from Matt, no make that Mike the CEO who was playing on a reality show and was so enamored with her he forgot there were cameras rolling. Yikes!
When Mike sends Jeremy to keep an eye on Lydia, she discovers he is more than a familiar face; he is witty, charming, relaxed and had a special way of looking at her: “Those were the eyes of a man who wanted her. Pure and clear. There was no ambiguity. No disguise. No fake green eyes. No fake human being.
I was a little worried reading the book blurb about Lydia starting a relationship with Jeremy. But this is so well done! He is the perfect foil for her current place in life. I love these two as a couple. Jeremy brings up Mike and the fact the recording was unintended no matter what social media states.
You will want to read book #1 before this one and definitely book #3 afterward. The rapport built with all the characters is undeniable great reading!!! Gotta run book #3 is calling!!
*** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book ***
The referencing of Fifty Shades of Grey right from the get-go and even mentioning how they wished they were characters from that "book" (I use the term loosely.) was a turn off for me. But many people like that, so complain I did not because the story still pulled me and made me want to read more!
Then again, I'm not the typical audience for this type of book. Yknow, being a guy and all. :P
Julia Kent is a wonderful author who writes realistic characters. Her heroines aren't the type to just wilt and die like a wallflower. They will fight back against the deliciously flawed heroes. That's what makes her characters fun. That's what makes her characters realistic and makes the plot all the better.
If you're a fan of sassy women, bosses who drives their employees wild and Fifty Shades then this is for you. If you're not, at least give it a try. You won't regret it.
We met Lydia, Mike, and Jeremy in Maliciously Obedient where we got left in a bit of a precarious situation. That book featured Lydia and Mike,or was it Matt, no wait Micheal Bournham - well whoever he was. Jeremy was there as more of a secondary character.
In Suspiciously Obedient Jeremy gets to come into the spot light. I adored Jeremy. In spite of being as messed up as everyone else, he also seems to know who and what he is and what he wants. He doesn't put on airs. He is so down to earth, open and honest - mostly. And you want to talk about layers? He can give Shrek a run for his money. I would so be on Team Jeremy! *sigh*
Things get interesting and a bit - well okay a lot - complicated in this book. There are those you want to hug, and those you want to punch. A very nice mix of conflict to spice this contemporary romance.
After the cliffhanger from the previous book I couldn’t wait to start the second book. But know I have a problem I need Part 3 NOW!!
This one is even better than the first one, to start to learn more and more about all characters, the bond between Jeremy and Lydia has funny and steamy parts.
Mike thinks he did a good job by sending Jeremy to watch over Lydia, but boy is he in for a threat and I don’t think he is going to like that.
Jeremy on the other hand has made a great job of filling the void in Lydia’s life and bedroom, now he understands why Mike was so caught up in his feelings for Lydia. But he wants her for himself.
Now Lydia and Jeremy are coming home what will happen if she finds Mike in a new disguise at her family’s campground?
Loved this series. You have to read the series in order. Book two leaves right were book one left off. Mike has damage control. He needs to get Lydia out of the light. When she finds out that she was sleeping with the CEO and their sex video hits the media, he knows that she will hate him. Lydia moves to Iceland to get away from the mess. Jeremy comes to play bodyguard but soon they find love into each other. She takes Jeremy home to meet family and figure out where mike is hiding. Mike is hiding at Lydia's family campground. They all leave when her grandma ends up in the hospital. Mike comes home and finds Jeremy and Lydia in his place. Now where will this go? See in book three.
I decided to buy this book because I read Maliciously Obedient in the $0.99 box set called Love in Disguise and found it endearingly funny. I laughed so hard at the Detroit trip that tears ran from my eyes. Seriously, the first book was so much fun to read. The tone of this book is a little darker, more serious. The characters are rich, flawed, and lovable. No intense action, not much violence, and no surprises. What you see...(plug in cliche). The boys are hot and sexy with perfect chemistry with our heroine. Don't expect guns blazing or nail biting suspense. This isn't that kind of book. An amusing read. Happy reading my fellow bookworms!
So I apparently read this book 3 years ago and sadly, I didn't love it first time around. However, I did enjoy this second reading. Lydia is finding her way in the aftermath of the sex tape. Thankfully for her the media isn't knocking on her door but she's mending a broken heart and trying to find her new normal. Jeremy has been asked by Mike to go to Iceland and check on Lydia. Jeremy is exactly what Lydia needs but it took some coaxing on his part to be her friend. They try to deny their chemistry but that only lasts for so long. Looking forward to reading more to this story in Deliciously Obedient.
Sorry but the second book was better than the first book!!! The story line and characters were great an you learned more about all of them.. In this book you can laugh one moment, and cry the next, that is awesome writing from the author. I think if an author can get you lost in a book they knocked the book out of the park, just like this author did with this second book in the series.. I didn't want this book to end I wanted more.. and more. I cried and laugh, and real got into the story and characters. Thanks for a awesome days of reading this book!!
This is book 2 in this series. This book covers the fresh start for Lydia since the fiasco of Mike/Matt and her public profile. Lydia gets a job transfer to Iceland to get as far away from her past as possible. Here she meets Jeremy and they develop a relationship. As with the previous book, the previous characters who played a role in Lydia's life continue to add support and light humour. Lydia learns a lot about herself in this book and what Mike meant to her. Great reading flow and ease of reading.
I don't like Jeremy to me he is a little to smarmy for me. With that said he did do as he was asked. I still feel like he over stepped. I see where Deliciously Obedient is going. I can't say this is my favorite book but it is not my least favorite either. It is a little long winded. Yet I gave it 5 stars because I was very entertained. Julia Kent kept me turning the pages. There was not very much sex, but when there finely was it was very hot. Julia Kent built up to the sex like a good man builds a woman up to an orgasm. In my opinion it is worth reading.
I was so excited at the end of book one and couldn't wait to find out more about Lydia and Mike. This book is well written, crisper and funnier than book one, with the adorable Jeremy sent in to save the day. Trying to make amends and save Lydia further embarrassment, Mike sends her abroad and sends his friend after her to make sure she is ok. But with the internet, nothing is private and as people in Iceland realize who Lydia is, she turns to the only friend she has close by. Jeremy and Lydia become close, so when Lydia decides to move back to the US, things get complicated.
I have to say that since reading Julia's first book her writing has grown by leaps and bounds. This book did not disappoint in any way. The sex scenes so hot I thought my wallpaper was going to peel off the walls. I found a great connection to the characters that I didn't have before and I loved it!! The only negative thing I could say is the ending left me just breathless I didn't want it to end and I definitely do not want to wait for the next installment.
I so enjoy this trilogy from Julia Kent even if I read the third book before the second book! Kind of ruins the second book when you do that but it was still a great read and filled in a few of the holes between the first and third book! You will not be disappointed at all (no matter what order you read them in)! That one thing I love about Julia books they can all be read as stand alone but they all have you craving more!
Love this story...didn't care for her being sent away which was really of no use to the story except that she had more of a relationship with Jeremy. And what to think of that now? Does she stay with him or go back to Mike in book 3? Makes you wonder?? I wish Mike would have fought for her a bit more before sending her away or at least explaining why she got the promotion instead of hearing it from Jeremy. Looking forward to book 3 for sure!!!
I'm used to looking like a crazy person when reading Julia's books (laughing so loudly while sitting in my office "working") but I didn't find that with this series. While it was a great series it just lacked the magic from some of the other series.
I loved the characters and could see where it was heading but it just took so darn long to get there. I wish it would have gotten there in book 1 and then expanded into books 2 and 3.
Mike is off finding himself and a way to get Lydia back. Lydia is in Iceland at working in a made up job that Mike gave her. Jeremy is sent to watch over her, unfortunately he might just be going a step further. This book was more about Jeremy and Lydia. They start getting a lot closer, but she can't help dreaming about all three of them together. I can't wait until the next book to see everything come together.
I completely loved Jeremy! Oh man! He was so sweet & goofy! I love guys like that. This is a pretty great trilogy; only I'm not very happy about having to wait to read the next one :( I really want to read it now! I really like Lydia's character & her grandma & family are pretty awesome! I can't wait to get to know them better in the next book :)
Love the connection with First billionaires series and Random Acts...just hoping there is a different ending for this one. There can't be that many perfect threesomes in Boston. At least not without the help of a special dating service. Would love to see Lydia and Mike together. Jeremy can find someone of his own to love..maybe Krysta!
Hmmm... Same lagging as first book but still can't seem to walk away from this series. I love the characters and want to follow them to the end. Maybe it's just me?!? I'm not one to read reviews because I like to make my own opinion so I base my purchase on the book description. So when I write a review I do it honestly and without spoilers. It is what it is.
HOT...HOT...HOT!!!! Julia Kent didn't disappoint in the second book in the Obedient series. Lydia & Mike....Lydia & Jeremy....what an interesting storyline that had me hooked from beginning to end!! The characters were fabulous and well thought out. Looking forward to reading the last book in the Obedient series!!! Julia Kent is truly a fabulous author!!
