2023 Reread
I first listened to this story nine years ago and my experience this second time around is about the same except I’m finding less patience with Sam and her tendency to withhold stuff from Nick, always professing a good reason. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed it again.

the setup
D.C. Detective Samantha (Sam) Holland and U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano (VA) are fresh from their romantic engagement when he gets a desperate call from Arizona Senator Henry Lightfeather, a good friend. A young woman has been brutally murdered and Lightfeather's in the thick of it. Sam's stuck with yet another case that tests the boundaries of their professional careers.

the heart of the story
This case has political intrigue mixed with plain old thuggery that takes some interesting paths. It was suspenseful and masterfully woven into the personal lives of not only Sam and Nick but the recurring supporting characters. There's a particularly tough situation involving another detective in Sam's squad that will test your resolve. It's not a tough case to figure out but it wasn't all that easy to unravel, either. I also like Sam and Nick's relationship. She's learning how to be part of a couple and Nick's holding her feet to the fire. Just when you think he's too good to be true he goes and does something completely human.

the narration
Eva Kaminksy's performance was wonderful. I particularly enjoyed how she conveyed tension without being overly dramatic about it. Her voice really worked for me and her male characterizations were very well done.

the bottom line
This was strong on mystery and suspense, couched neatly in a really great romance. The development of the secondary characters was also outstanding and I enjoyed their stories as much as Sam and Nick's. I had a hard time putting it down and love Kaminsky’s performance.

This is my safe bet. Whenever I'm in a book slump or don't know what to read, I decide to revisit Sam and Nick's world.

It's funny, though, because I don't usually like reading continued book series with the same characters. I simply get bored after some time, especially once the characters reach their HEA.

But this series is everything except boring. Which only shows the author's skill and creativity - it is not easy to keep your readers interested for so long.

Thank God I have 13 more books to read. I hope there will be even more...

Sam and Nick are called to an address by Senator Henry Lightfeather. Inside the apartment, they find the Senator's mistress raped and murdered. Nick recognizes her as one of the cleaning crew at the Senate office building. As Sam and her detectives investigate the murder, another member of the cleaning crew is found dead. Now as they work to find a link between the murders, clues could lead them to the highest office in the land.

This is a terrific addition to Marie Force's Fatal series. Along with an interesting mystery, we get to see Sam and Nick's relationship grow. This series also has great secondary characters that shine with their own stories. Also, two people from Sam and Nick's past are back into their lives and ready to cause havoc. My rating: 5 Stars.

2023 Re-read: This book was just as good the second time around as the first. Nick and Sam have a great relationship. They're learning how to be a couple and support each other. I loved how Nick couldn't be pressured into making his wife drop the investigation "for the good of the party". Too bad many politicians today would bow to the pressure. The suspense portion was a good mystery with a handful of suspects. I also enjoy the supporting characters and seeing the things that are happening in their lives. My rating is still 5 Stars.

Fatal Consequences is the third book in the Fatal series and my absolute favorite of them all, so far. Being a huge fan of Romantic Suspense I've read a lot of it, so it takes quite a bit to impress me. Well, let me tell you, Marie Force has definitely done that!

So far each book in this series has been excellent, and has kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Nick and Samantha, the main characters and whose lives we follow through each book, are the kinds of people I can become invested in and want to see more and more of. I love being able to revisit the secondary players book after book because they’re just as awesome as our hero and heroine are.

I can't say this enough - If you're looking for an exciting story filled with characters you can connect with and cheer for, then you really should give Marie Force's Fatal series a try.

I've gotten some questions about the heat factor for the books. So here it is - For those readers out there who like their stories on the steamier side, I want to mention that the sex scenes in this series are fairly mild. There’s more sexual tension than actual sex, but in the case of these stories it works well. And in case you're wondering, I'd strongly encourage you to read these books in order.

Loved this one! Definitely my favorite so far. I’m a huge fan of Romantic Suspense and I think Marie Force has captured everything I look for in a RS book with this Fatal series.

I think Sam is great. She is strong yet vulnerable. She is funny yet a bad ass. In this one Sam is in the midst of a pretty big case while trying to keep her head afloat when it comes to her personal life. She is great at compartmentalizing things so that she can focus on her job but this time she’s not sure if she can manage. But she has Nick. ❤️

Nick is that kind of guy all women love. He is kind, sweet and sexy. But don’t let that fool you. He has a temper and when it is triggered shit will hit the fan. The one thing Nick treasures above all else is Sam. He would do anything to protect her.

And these secondary characters are fabulous. Freddie is probably my favorite. He’s funny! Sam’s dad is a strong character too. I’m really looking forward to what’s next to come for all of them.

Not much of a review but you get the gist of it. This series is great!

I just did my umpteenth reread of Fatal Consequences and it was just as good as ever. The rekindled relationship between Washington, DC homicide Lieutenant Sam Holland and Senator Nick Holland is progressing at warp speed. Suddenly a woman is found dead and another senator, a friend of Nick’s is implicated.

I must stress once again how good these books are; they are not just romance; they are full of deep family ties, excitement, suspense and betrayal. And the ongoing banter and humor between Sam and her partner, Freddie Cruz is worth the read by itself. When I’m not on the edge of my seat, I am laughing hysterically of the antics of these two.

Force’s storytelling is perfection, her character development just keeps getting better and better. I recommend that everyone I know read this series, you won’t be disappointed. This series ranks number two in my favorite series of all time. I gave this book FIVE stars again!

Great read - love that the setting for these books is in Washington, DC - where else can you find so much corruption! Learned something new from this book - "anchor babies" - never heard of that before. Marie Force weaves a great web of suspence, twists, turns, and has done a pile of research.

Really liking this series - great character developments and lots of them and all with plenty of flaws.

Two thumbs up!

I had thought that the previous 2 books in this series had been outstanding but I was completely blown away with this one. If you love RS and you haven't read this series yet then I cannot recommend it enough.

I am not usually a fan of RS where the books continue on with the same couple as the main focus, as I have found that the romance side tends to suffer but this is definitely not the case with this series. Ms Force still pays just as much attention to the romance and we get to see the relationship between Nick & Sam become stronger. Normally we don't get to read about the time when the couple are adjusting/getting used to each other. With the Fatal series we see how they have to continue to work at and compromise to make their relationship work.

I cannot gush enough about Nick - oh boy he is a man to die for!.....Not only is he good looking with a nice physic but he is sweet & tender with Sam and obviously worships the ground that she walks on. He has so much patience with her as he fully understands her insecurities and worries about their relationship. We have also seen that when the need arises he can be tough too but never with the woman that he adores. Sam is a very strong woman who is capable of looking after herself but has a much softer side when it comes to Nick. She really loves him and wants their relationship to work, but as a result of a bad previous marriage she has loads of different insecurities and finds it hard to adjust even though she knows that Nick is nothing like her previous husband.

We often come across a book that we wish we could give 6 stars as it has just that little bit more and deserves the elite recognition. This is one of those books and I really wish I could give it higher than 5 stars!

3.5 "Love the Romance; The Suspense....Not So Much" Stars

I'm really torn about this series because the suspense / crime aspects of it just aren't working for me but the romance / personal dramas are. Marie Force keeps telling us that Sam is a great detective, in fact the best in town, but she hasn't shown us. No uncanny ability to get into a suspects head, no outsmarting a cunning perp in the interrogation room, no gut feeling leading her left when everyone else is going right. She's never truly challenged. Here her suspects, powerful, high ranking officials - who have been touted as feeling like their above the law the entire book - simply rollover with minimal prompting.....before even asking for a lawyer!!! My 5 year old niece could've brought these guys down while sucking her thumb and carrying her blankie!! However, I love everything outside of HQ - Sam and Nick; their families, co-workers, and friends. It all works. There's a genuineness, a believability, that naturally springs from these relationships and their dramas that is lacking in the "suspense".

So I've decided that I'm okay with a romantic-suspense series that delivers big on the romance / personal drama but fizzles on the believable crime / suspense as long as the characters are likable and engaging. I guess, for a romantic at heart like me at least, an author can egregiously omit true suspense from a romantic-suspense but if they screw with my romance......all bets are off!!

I have struggled with this book and entire series as I seem to keep comparing characters, plot lines even conversation points to the JD Robb InDeath series. A good friend recommended I put away the comparisons and critiques and just enjoy the stories as they are written.
I guess I needed that push. I do love the way that while the series focus is Sam and Nick, Force gives a lot of page time to the other key couples in the series. The case was interesting and well paced and I enjoyed the way good solid police work rewarded the Lt and her detectives with good results. The touch of angst was just right. On to the 3.5 book and wedding.

The murder of two members of the Capitol Cleaning Service might’ve been just another homicide investigation—that is if one of them hadn’t been romantically involved with a married senator from Arizona. Lt. Sam Holland and her team are plunged into another complex case that at first seems open and shut. But as Sam tugs on the threads of the investigation she uncovers a deep, dark Washington secret that threatens the careers of some of the government’s highest-ranking officials. Racing to catch a killer before he can strike again, Sam and her fiancé, U.S. Senator Nick Cappuano, attempt to plan a wedding while her colleague Detective Tommy “Gonzo Gonzales faces life-changing news

OMG! I completely love this series. Had to throw that out there right from the beginning because this will probably be a totally biased review.

In this installment, Sam and Nick are attending the wedding of her father and his caregiver/girlfriend Celia in a somewhat cheesy Valentine's day affair. Smack dab in the middle of the reception, Sam receives a call from Arizona Senator Henry Lightfeather stammering on about someone being dead.

And we're off...

As with the previous 2 entries into this series, a lot happens and it happens fast. We have dead bodies, we have high level politicians involved the latest DC evil doings, Cruz having a hard time dealing with his vow breaking, Gonzo's status as an unattached, unencumbered man changing in the blink of an eye, Nick's mother dropping in, Sam's ex-husband causing trouble all while the Sam and the MPD team tries to solve the latest group of murders and she and Nick plan the wedding he's decided to have in six weeks.

There are gut-wrenching, heartbreaking moments (I can't tell you what they are because it will give important parts away), but these all show us the type of person that Sam is. She's growing. She's trying really hard to let go of those bad habits she developed with her ex-husband and you can see that in her interactions with not only Nick, but also with the members of her MPD team.

Nick, is just Nick. You have to love him. He's been through so much, but he still manages to remain grounded and give our girl Sam just what she needs (whether it's a good kick in the ass or wrapping her in his love).

Can't wait for Fatal Destiny (hope it's still slated for September) and then for Fatal Flaw.

Man. So much happened in this book it's quite shocking really. Just like before, I wasn't truly able to guess who was behind the plots until the very end again. Marie is so good at that!

In this book, immigrant cleaning ladies who work in the Senate office are turning up murdered. It starts with one senator who had an affair, which later turned into love, for his cleaning lady. She was found murdered in a gruesome way but she was also pregnant at the time of her death. The senator knew about the baby but Sam is still determined to find the killer especially when another immigrant is found murdered days behind the first. Meanwhile, Nick gets a blast from his sad past in the form of his mother having an accident and "needing" him. Throughout all of this, it comes to light that Peter, Sam's ex-husband, may get out of prison over a technicality that may be her and her officers fault and some big ass government secrets are gearing up to be exploded wide open.

I really enjoyed this installment because I felt like I learned a lot in regards to immigrants and their status in America. For example, there is a such thing as "anchor babies" where the mother is tied to America, thanks to the 14th amendment, because her child was conceived and born here. It's a good law but it also opens the door for women to exploit especially when they're desperate. Even though most of the government information is being presented in a fiction story, it really gives you some depth while you're reading and trying to understand certain character motives.

Sam and Nick are now living together and are still trying to navigate their relationship real good. One thing they do know for certain is that they want to get married and it's real fun and sweet to watch how they go about making the plans to do so even when their lives are being threatened. There is a bit of tragedy with the case Sam is working on and with Sam herself that I wasn't prepared for so you definitely have to brace yourself where your emotions are concerned. All in all, I'm happy to continue this series and would still recommend it to my friends.

Review
It is official: Marie Force has been added to my must read authors (those who I would read even if they wrote the phone book)... Sam and Nick are just too cute for words, but don’t tell Sam I said so or she may shoot me. I also want to pillage her killer shoe collection (they’re in storage anyway…so she may not notice).

Take interesting three dimensional characters full of wit, fun and friendship, add in a great suspenseful plot and pepper it with some yummy romances and you have the Fatal series. The sub-plots and characters are so full and complementary to the overall story you don’t even see where the Sam/Nick story begins and ends…they are woven together so perfectly.

This third story in the series is the best so far. I enjoyed the interplay between Sam and her colleagues chasing a bold and particularly vicious serial killer almost as much as I enjoyed the romantic scenes between Sam/Nick, Tommy/Chris, and Freddie/Elin. I was on the edge of my seat several times (scrolling like mad) because the plot and suspense were that good.

If you haven’t found Marie Force yet…get on it. The Fatal series is a great romantic suspense series to start this summer. The story goes even further as Force has sections on her website where the readers can vote on their wedding ideas for Sam and Nick. I voted for the Vera Wang dress. Enjoy!

Here's what I hate about Marie Force books. They end and I want to keep reading them!

This was another wonderful installment of the Fatal Series by this wonderful author! I am feeling a huge girl crush on Ms. Force right now! :)

Nick and Sam are so wonderful. Everytime he says, "Samantha" I get all fluttery to use Sam's word.

I do have one small complaint. It's not anything major. At the end of the book something happens. I had tears in my eyes reading this. I would like to have been in Nick's head at this time. We got a little of what Sam was thinking and then that's it. Well not it, but Iwanted to be in his head just a bit.

Freddy and Tommy both have goings on in their lives in this book and I loved getting to know them personally a little bit better. Like another favorite series, JD Robb's in Death series, the recurring characters have become friends for me. I like revisiting them and getting to know them better.

Not sure how I'm going to survive the wait for the wedding!

This was an engaging read, but one I found implausible in a number of ways. You could tell that the author had done some research on the subject of anchor babies, which I appreciated.

The plot of this one builds on the events of the books prior to this, but I found it highly implausible that Sam could work through an . I also couldn't believe that Freddie and Elin were . Why hook them up in the first place?! In addition to that, I couldn't believe that such a slip up could take place that would allow Sam's ex an out for his actions. Just too many implausibilities for me to give it 5 stars.

Ignoring that, we do see development in the lives of all the characters, which was enjoyable to read. It left me wanting to read the next book, but hoping that the implausible scenarios would be kept to a minimum.

"Fatal Consequences" continues the series starring Nick and Sam, who have moved themselves into first place as my favorite couple in a romantic suspense series. I just love the chemistry between these two and find that a number of the secondary characters are endearing themselves to me as well. There's so much reading enjoyment in the creative case plots and character development. Mixed with witty humor and romance that leaves you breathless and you've got yourself a well-rounded "must-read" series for romantic suspense lovers. (Note: even if you don't consider yourself a romantic suspense connoisseur, if you like well-written relationships and romance, look no further!)

I am really enjoying this series. This book continues the story of Nick and Sam's growing relationship and I really enjoyed the murder mystery of this book. Ms. Force wrote a tightly woven suspense-filled mystery in this book. She is also highlighting the stories of the secondary characters in this series and showing us how their lives are unfolding. Although I seem to be late to the party, I am glad that I found this series and I plan to continue.

Riveting and suspenseful. Sam and Nick are caught up in a mega scandal and this time it isn't about them. The baddies are all high-ranking government or closely related to the government bigwigs. I loved how Sam was tenacious and wouldn't let herself be intimated. I also loved how Nick loves her and supports her throughout the case.

Two women who clean the offices in the Hart Building are brutally attacked and murdered. This si the beginning of the unravelling of a complex operation that reaches to the highest places in government. Lt. Sam Holland is right in the action, ferreting out the darkest secrets of the Washington elite and tracking down a killer.

Fatal Consequences
3.5 Stars

Detective Lieutenant Sam Holland is once again embroiled in a case involving the highest echelons of power when she is called in to investigate the brutal murder of a Capitol cleaning woman. Matters are further complicated by the fact that the prime suspect is Henry Lightfeather, the senator from Arizona, and a close friend of Sam's fiancé, Nick Cappuanno.

Once again the most problematic issue with this series is the unlikeable heroine. Force's attempt to model Sam on J. D. Robb's prickly detective, Eve Dallas, is completely unsuccessful. First, Sam's emotional baggage doesn't even come close to Eve's, and it is not a sufficient excuse for her harsh edges. Second, Sam's attitude and behavior are often selfish and immature, which is not the case for Eve.

Similarly, Nick is no Roarke. He lacks the ineffable sense of mystery and power that emanates from Roarke. Nevertheless, Sam and Nick have good chemistry, and their romance is moving forward at a strong pace. Their communication skills have also improved as compared to previous installments.

The murder investigation is the best in the series thus far. The crime is horrific and the suspense is intense, especially as the killer strikes close to home by . In this particular instance, Sam shines both as a detective and as a friend. My one caveat is that the identity of the primary villain has no foundation in the narrative, so there is no way to follow clues leading to their exposure.

There are also updates on the personal lives of Sam's colleagues, which are very appealing and it will be interesting to see how these develop.

Overall, there is still work to do but Fatal and Sam have potential.

Why oh why does Sam feel the right to continually stick her nose into Freddie and Tommy's lives. Yes, I get they are supposedly friends but I see no evidence that supports that claim seeing as they don't really spend time together outside of work. I'd let this slide if there was even one measly scene where they all go out for a bite or for drinks after work.
Aside from that the plot was once again solid and the story moved along nicely. Also, maybe Nick should become the detective. Once again the case is solved thanks to his input and without much actual work and effort from our detectives. Oh and Sam is again breaking rules left and right but that's ok since here bosses are fine with it. Oh, and no they are still not playing favorites.
I have to say Scotty was a highlight in this one. I do hope Nick adopts him.
Also, while I feel bad for Sam that she miscarried, I don't like her attitude. There are quite a few women out there who have high risk pregnancies and therefore have to take precautions, not exert themselves, or even spend a big chunk (if not the majority) of their pregnancies more or less bed bound and resting. It's annoying, yes but you do what you have to do. So having Sam first mope about not being able to get pregnant, then mope about the possibility of miscarrying, then finding out she's pregnant and while being happy and wanting the baby, more or less laughing in the doctor's face when he tells her she should take it easy and maybe consider taking a medical leave of absence from work to preserve the pregnancy. Well it makes me just a tiny bit less sympathetic towards her.

WHHHHY!! Why did I wait to read this book. I hate that I left Fatal Consequences lingering on Mount TBR. I blame it on the old adage toooooo many good books...too little time. It was sooooo good. A perfect storm of Nick and Sam.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. Given the climate on the US political scene right now...disgraced 5 star Generals having affairs putting their careers in jeopardy...I couldn’t help but compare it to what Marie Force serves up in Fatal Consequences even though it was written over a year ago. I know I’m late to the party on this one, but better late than never.

I think Nick is perfect and if he wasn’t a fictional character, I would totally want him for my boyfriend...as long as Sam doesn’t find out and kick my ass.

If I can’t have Nick then I am glad he and Sam have each other. They are perfect together. He is the ying to her yang. They ground each other and are truly each other’s soul mates. But even soul mates have rough patches and issues to work through and I as a reader am thoroughly enjoying the journey as their relationship grows and deepens. They are a testament to how a strong, high profile couple can make a relationship work. And it does take work, it’s not easy and that’s what makes it special.

This series just keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait to continue reading about my “boyfriend Nick, Gonzo and his baby daddy issues, Freddie and his mommy issues, adorable little Scotty and the super tough as nails Lieutenant Sam Holland.

Bring on the wedding!

Favorite Quotes:

That was one of her favorite things about her relationship with Nick. Even in the quiet spaces between words, she was always in tune with him.

My future husband knows if he ever cheats on me I'd shoot him before I'd ever stand by his side like the humiliated little wife.

But luckily for you - and for me - you're also annoyingly cute, distractingly sexy, and perfectly imperfect.

Oh, I love when we get to arrest evil bastards!

Gonzo's heart beat harder as he understood with a clarity he'd never experienced quite so vividly before that she was it for him - the one he'd been waiting for without even knowing he'd been waiting.

My Review:

Sam and Nick's life remains in high gear throughout this active and suspenseful piece. A series of murders brings an extremely vexing case to Sam's load, and since it's Washington D.C. - that means murder, sex, politics, and corruption across all levels of government. The plotline maintains the intrigue and suspense throughout, with several staffers also garnering their own significant subplots, each as captivating as the main event of Sam and Nick, who continue to enthrall me. Ms. Force's writing is expertly paced, engrossing, easy to follow, and highly addicting. She squeezes my heart in one paragraph, and has me smirking in the next, but always keeps me well entertained.
