I just finished the last of the three Odd Interludes that Dean Koontz wrote as a primer for Odd Apocalypse. The 3 novellas are fan-friggin-tastic! I love the way that more characters were incorporated into the story and that things that you wouldn't expect included (i.e. another persons narrative) are later explained to make perfect sense. I have read Odd Apocalypse and I am now salivating to read Deeply Odd. However, I have come to a conclusion that makes me quite depressed. It is stated in each of these novels that as they have been "written" by Odd, they are not to be released until his death. Meaning that in the course of two more books, Odd will move into "service". Sad, because this is a terrific character and deserves many more tales to be told. Oh and I think that Dean Koontz's inclusion of Tom Cruise's name in each of this stories really is pure genius and adds a little bit of continuity that will bring a smile to your face each time you read it. Dean Koontz has again written a phenomenal fast paced read and I look forward to the upcoming titles in the Odd Thomas Series.

Not bad...a return to his earlier work involving "reasonable extensions" of existing recombinant DNA research, coupled with the fantasy of Odd's...oddities. Better than others of his more recent works, but still wordier than he used to be. Too much inane chatter from the characters and overuse of "SAT" words, as my kids like to call them. He used to be more crisp in his writing. Also, the action was formulaic, not as intrinsically frightening as some of his earlier books, perhaps because it was, in the end, not close enough to human evil to inspire true shivers. All in all, better than some of his recent books, but not up to the level of humor of Tick Tock, the humanity of Watchers, the psychological drama of Cold Fire, or the creativity of Lightning or Twilight Eyes. I'm hoping for better from Odd Apocalypse.

Wrapping up this little trilogy of Odd Thomas novellas, leading up to Odd Apocalypse in late July, I enjoyed this departure into more of science-fiction horror than supernatural. Odd does what he does, this self-depracating would-be hero, and manages to sprinkle in both wickedly funny and poignantly sad moments, all the while leading to a confrontation with pure alien evil. Yeah, I was a tad bit disappointed (spoiler alert!) that there was no Chris Snow resolution (these novellas were largely set in Fort Wyvern and surrounding area, setting for the two Chris Snow novels; but for some reason Koontz hasn't revisited this unfinished trilogy) but still, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey....er, pitstop. Must read for Koontz/Odd Thomas fans!

In Odd we trust!...
I'm a big fan of the Odd Thomas series so it was a pleasure to read this 3-part Novella. I found it quirky, well-paced, with the occasional curve-ball thrown in.... Classic Koontz!
My favourite character (aside from Oddie) would be Ed, who strangely, has a great sense of humour for who, or what I should say, he is!

The conclusion to the Odd interlude which takes place between the events of ODD HOURS and ODD APOCALYPSE provides closure to the mystery at Harmony Corner. Super AI computer Ed, Odd, and local Jolie team-up to confront Hiskott, the human/alien hybrid in a bid to sever the control he has over the tight-knit community. The story flows well, picking up direct from the events in ODD INTERLUDE #2. This instalment focuses more on the fight between good (Odd) and evil (Hiskott) than story or Fort Wyvern and Project Polaris as you’d expect.

Koontz doesn’t leave any gore to the imagination by depicting the monstrosity that is Hiskott and his unearthly band of servants in graphic detail. This was the first serious look at the b-grade horror inhabiting Harmony Corner (ODD INTERLUDE #1 ending is a mere snippet) and is well worth the wait.

Annamaria is absent from this one as I mentioned in previous ODD INTERLUDE and ODD HOURS reviews, she’s one of the more interesting and mysterious characters to appear in the series. I look forward to reading ODD APOCALYPSE to see if her story is further defined.

As for this final instalment, it achieved what it set out to do, however the interludes as a whole were nothing much more than a blip on the Odd Thomas story. Fans will enjoy them (if you’re not cringing at Odd’s mannerisms by now and excessive politeness) while those new to Odd will struggle to pick-up the Odd journey. 2.5 stars.

If you enjoy Odd Thomas books, you'll enjoy Odd Interlude.

When starting Koontz's Odd Interlude #1, I expected it would be the first of three short stories, but it's actually the first third of a novella featuring the character Odd Thomas. As usual with Koontz, things are fast-paced, well-described and exciting. I always enjoy Koontz's books because it's so easy to root for his heroes, and they don't come more likeable than Odd Thomas. He's sympathetic, humble, funny and brave.

The plot is interesting, horror with a Sci-Fi twist, dealing with a scientist infected by his own experiment and gaining the ability of psychic domination. I finished Odd Interlude #1 and #2 very quickly. I got a bit bogged down in #3, but not because of Odd or the villain, who were both very good. I had some trouble with two supporting characters, Jolie, a twelve-yr-old, and an AI computer. Writing in the voice of kids is hard, and Koontz seems to think yapping on in a first person stream-of-consciousness manner portrays a teen (or Jolie anyway). Although others may find her cute, I found her annoying. I also had trouble with the AI's voice. He reminded me of Number 5 from "Short Circuit,"not a super-intelligent military computer.

Regardless of these niggling disappointments, I still gave this collection 5 stars because Koontz is far better than so much of the Horror drek getting published now.

Read parts 1, 2, and 3 as a complete combo ebook.

A little better than the previous two Odd books (Forever Odd and Brother Odd) but still some over-description & meandering in pacing (as Koontz is wont to do) and the climax of the story was too easily wrapped up compared to all the build-up.

And why was the character Annamaria with Odd? She never really played much of a part in this story ~ only mentioned briefly in the beginning and then shortly at the end. I guess she's going to be important in the upcoming Odd Apocalypse?

And where's the ghost of Frank Sinatra? And why wasn't Boo utilized beyond just a couple of sentences?

This was a really good 3rd part to Odd Interlude. It finishes off the story in typical Odd Thomas fashion. There's more of a cross-over with the Moonlight Bay series but no appearances from Christopher Snow (mores the pity). I really liked this conclusion of the story and the whole thing was very good overall. :D

* I listened to all 3 parts in the audio version. The narrator did a great job as normal. :D

The conclusion to a three part series. Do not read unless you read the first two. The adventures continues for Dean's character Odd Thomas. This series has some sci-fi mixed in but is a welcome addition to the whole Odd series. It is a quick read and further develops why odd Thomas is a charcter that people love.

Odd Interlude #3 is a short story from Odd Thomas series written by Dean Koontz, which is the third of three novellas that form a bigger overreaching novel and takes place in-between Odd Hours and Odd Apocalypse and is best read after the fourth book in the series to prevent spoilers.

Odd Thomas and Annamaria conclude their investigation in Harmony Corners as the mysterious presence is revealed and Harmony Corners would never be the same again. With the help of Jolie Harmony, a twelve year old girl who’s been marked for death because she's too beautiful to live, finds the center of evil, and a confrontation with an unspeakable monstrosity.

Odd Interlude #3 is written rather well. The narrative captures the precise feeling of living in an abusive home in fantasy form. Both primary and secondary characters were well defined and each went through an intriguing character arc even in this experimental writing form. Once again, Odd Thomas as the protagonist is a gem with is soft-spoken, humble charm, which balances the horrors of the novella.

Overall, Odd Interlude is written rather well. This trio of novellas gets stronger and better with each successive installment. Odd Thomas finds himself in a small hamlet of Harmony Corners where the harmony is just a façade and beneath the thin veneer holds a horrific secret. Koontz has done an admirable job in writing this installment in an untraditionally manner.

All in all, Odd Interlude #3 is written rather well and a wonderful addition to Odd Thomas universe.

I read Odd Interlude in its entirety as a single book, rather than the individual parts, as I felt it gave the best experience that way. (It can be enjoyed as each part, but it works best if you read it all together to follow how things develop.) Therefore, my review is for the entirety rather than each individual part.

The Odd Thomas series is one of my favourite series, but I read the main series without reading Odd Interlude. It worked perfectly fine without having read Odd Interlude there were references but I was never confused yet curiosity has me, years later, reading the book to see exactly what happened.

While this quick interlude was an enjoyable read, it did not wow me in the way the main series did. It was a nice detour with the Odd Thomas feel to it, a story that had me devouring it in no time, yet it felt a little too easy considering the other books in the series. It is worth reading if you’re a fan of Odd Thomas and want to know about every adventure, but the main series can be read without this one.

All in all, I’m glad I finally sated my curiosity. Despite my curiosity being satisfied, I won’t be adding this to my favourite list.

I have always been a big fan of Koontz, and especially his Odd Thomas stories. This is not one of my favorites. Odd Thomas is still charming, and the introduction of the young girl Jolie Harmony is interesting. I had to stretch my normal threshold of belief (even more than with usual Koontz books) when Jolie, who is only 12 years old, converses like an adult and continually makes references to obscure pop icons of the last thirty years. Who knows a 12 year old like that? Still, I did like Jolie and it is Dean Koontz, who often uses ten dollar words where a fifty cent word would suffice. I was, however, fully enjoying the book right up to Odd's encounter with the antagonist. I thought the scene was too brief and somewhat uninspired. This book also deals more with aliens and has little of Odd's paranormal activities that we've all come to know and love.

If you have followed this series, you should definitely read Odd Interlude. I have a feeling that we may hear more about Jolie Harmony, and her introduction here should not be missed.

I will certainly continue to follow Odd's journey, but I am hopeful that the next book will remain truer to the Oddie we've all come to love.

Part 3 and final book: The book flipped back and forth between Odd making a mess of the town making his way to the mutant oppressor and Jolie in the underground laboratory getting to know Ed the AI that was put in charge of watching over the abandoned lab. These two characters were great! They were close to being the only comic relief in this face-paced rescue from alien beings. Poor Odd never gets any rest and has the weight of the world on his shoulders. I really like all the Odd books so far. And just a note...I miss Elvis!

The mostly satisfying conclusion to Odd Interlude

This 3rd part to the serialized Odd Thomas story called Odd Interlude is the big finale to the science fiction thriller. It’s the confrontation between good and evil that Parts 1 & 2 were building up to. It happens in a pretty satisfying manner, if fairly predictably. Also, after making snide remarks throughout the early chapters, the Big Bad is completely silent during the confrontation. It’s kind of a letdown.

I never know what genre to "classify" Dean Koontz's books. Maybe that's why I like them so much. They cross so many of the genres that I like.

In Odd Interlude, Odd Thomas gets caught up in a town on the coast which is full of horror, suspense, chills-n-thrills. Can Odd save the people of Harmony Corner?

Pretty good finale for the novella, but I did get lost a lot in the descriptions and the shifts between Odd and Jolie.

I am interested in what's to come, but man, it gets so tiring with all the nonsense descriptions.

Also, the alien thing... Kind of weird.

An appropriate end to this “interlude. I was kept interested right to the end, waiting to see what would happen and what the explanation was of the events. Perhaps not as good as others in this series so far, but it added to it nicely.

Odd Thomas continues his supernatural journey and shenanigans in this three part version of Odd Interlude. This finds him battling a human/alien hybrid who controls a whole family vis telepathy. Things get from bad to worse but Odd takes care of business and terminates the threat. Recommended.
