Between them Andy Kirkpatrick and David Coley have racked up many, Ìýmany pitches on multi pitch rock; tackling alpine and big wall climbs all over the world. Unlike most instructional books, this one assumes that the reader already knows the basics of climbing, and so instead shares more advances ideas, tactics and techniques for multi pitch rock climbing. This book is not for beginners!
The book covers all the main topics for anyone wanting to climb multi pitch rock, written from real world experience.
As they said in the preface this is not a book for a beginner and covers very technical information about climbing. I got a lot from the book, but reading it on a Kindle was tough as there were a ton of diagrams that were hard to read. Overall a great book, but read it as a paper version to get the most out of it.
Excellent content - really valuable advanced techniques for the multi-pitch rock climber from a couple of guys who really know what they are talking about, and can convey it in a conversational, clear manner. This is the type of info it could take you years to learn, sometimes the hard way.
The main issue with this ebook version is the lack of illustration / diagrams - Coley and Kirkpatrick have published much of this free on their excellent , and I bought the ebook to support them / pay back for this freely shared information. But the book was published in epub without many of the the pics to save money (apparently available on the iBook version?) making it much less valuable as a result. Some of the techniques involve quite complicated rigging, and really need clear visuals to be able to understand easily. These are separately available as pdf from the website above, which is some consolation.
This is an excellent guide, and I'll return to it often to revise my technique - but do think it is a much lesser book than it could have been with well-integrated pics and drawings.
The kindle version of this book is much different from the iBook one. So if you have a kindle, expect to get your hands on a nice description of techniques, procedures and stories about multi pitch climbing, but few images, drawings or schemas on anchor building, rappelling, rescue procedures or other typical subject you would find on a book like this.
Very interesting and full of content, this can be a nice addition to you shelf.
