My mother only wanted me to learn one lesson growing up Men are trash.
Her father left her, and then my father left us. Being raised by her and my grandmother, I was surrounded by the reminder to be independent and guard my heart.
After my one and only experience with a boy in college fell flatter than a pancake, I realized they were right and I was content to live the life of a twenty-six-year-old cat lady.
Until Will Perry blew my quiet world to smithereens.
Starting goalie for the Tampa Bay Ospreys and the kind of hot that scrambles your brain, all I was ever supposed to be to him was his daughter’s kindergarten teacher. Then, in a twist of events, his temporary nanny.
But temporary turns to permanent, and when I move into his pool house, everything changes.
He’s impossibly grumpy and focused on only two things: hockey, and taking care of his daughter. I’m only focused on using this new income to pay back my student loans.
But in that house, I feel his heated gaze beneath that permanent scowl, the way it lingers and warms my skin. And though I know my mother would lose her mind if she knew, my dreams have become midnight fantasies about my long-haired, muscle-lined mystery of a boss.
When the tension becomes too much, we break, and we make a deal.
He still needs a nanny. I still need a paycheck and for my matriarchy to not disown me. But Will agrees to teach me everything I’ve always wanted to learn, and I’m all too eager to be his student.
I can do this. I’m a grown woman. I can explore my sexuality with the hottest goalie on earth and still remain one-hundred percent professional. And I can definitely do it all without catching feelings.
I have to.
Otherwise, I’ll end up heartbroken in my mother’s arms while she shakes her head and asks me if I’ll ever learn my lesson.

Learn Your Lesson is book three in the Kings of the Ice series:a series of interconnected standalones following a team of professional hockey players and the women who bring them to their knees. They do not need to be read in order, but you will gain glimpses of future characters/couples in each book.

“I will love you, Chloe, with every broken shard of what’s left of me. And I will rebuild with you for you.
I was already so excited fo start this book since it was about DaddyP 🤭 I knew it was going to hit and I feel like this was easily the best one in this series. I binged this one sooo fast like I didn't even realize that I had made such significant progress as I was reading. I was immediately sucked in to this book. The writing was as usual easy to follow and very addictive. I also would recommend reading it in order because each book has crumbs for the characters in the next book and they just hit different tbh 😋
“Home was wherever she was.
Will Perry was such a grumpy, broody diva 💜 we saw glimpses of how grumpy he was in the first two books and it was so interesting to see why he was like that and how much he still cared under all the hard exterior. His love for his daughter and how it affected his day was very cute. Chloe, the cutest, most loving, sunshiney fmc that I've read about. I love how she took care of Ava and how much she changed Will's life and I also loved how dedicated she was to her job, it loosely highlighted the problems of the education system when it comes to paying their teachers and It was good to see that. Besides that, I really enjoyed how Chloe had two very strong women in her life who she learned from and how she was able to form a family with Will and his friends.
“I’m going to try to be better in every measurable way. Because that’s what you deserve. It’s what you make me want for myself.
The romance 🙂↕ easily my favourite in the series. I love Nanny romance novels so obviously I loved this and I also love the micro trope when it comes to grumpy X sunshine which is the when the FMC makes the MMC laugh, I just find it very cute. They had very cute scenes but the spicy scenes?? They were insane ❤️ like easily some of the hottest I've read and they were so well done!! Kandi always aces them.
Overall, another great addition to this series! ___ I was going to read 'Save your breath' first but honestly fuck it- I'm wayy too excited for this and 😭 I'm putting everything aside for this cuz I have to binge most of it today because if I dont and 'Sunrise on the reaping' shows up on my doorsteps, I cans ay bye bye to 'Save your breath' :))
✔️ If you want to read about a broken man who still hasn't gotten over the grief of losing his wife and only pulled his head out of his ass at the 87% mark.
✔️ If you want to read about an inexperienced woman, and what I meant by that was someone who only had sex once in her life and is now ready for coaching lessons. God, the imbalance between their sex lives! I just want to smash something to the nearest wall.
✔️ If you want to read about a pathetic FMC who agreed to a "sex only" setup but failed and fell in love along the way. Who almost begged, not just once, for the MMC to return the sentiment and give her assurance but never got any. She has no self-respect! Why did she even want to be with a wishy-washy manchild?!
✔️ If you're willing to go through the process of reliving the things the late wife enjoyed while she was still alive and to see these things introduced to the daughter. I was fuming but also hurting to experience them, I want to hate her but she really seemed like a good person. Ugh!
✔️ If you want to read about a grumpy 5-year-old kid who had a 180 and became a sweet ball of sunshine. Ava was cute, I have to admit that.
✔️ If you want to read about new found family and gal friendships.
✔️ If you want to read about a guy who's never good with words but, for some unexplainable reason, found an awesome moment to spew poetic stuff to win back the FMC after they finally "f*cked their rules" only for him to leave her the next morning without a word. He said he was afraid and needed time to think things through, even though he knew her abandonment issue.
I honestly don't have the energy to go through all the things that annoyed me while reading this, but I could probably list more. These two exasperated the ever-loving crap out of me, and by the time they finally acknowledged their feelings, I'm so over and done with the story. I just want to finish it and add this to my ŷ challenge.
So all in all, I didn't enjoy this. Sure, there were some sweet and tender moments, but the "sex only" setup ruined the story for me. The fact that it took a long time for Will to get his sh*t together made me like this even less.
Most of all, this could be a me thing, but I do look forward to seeing the first kiss of the MCs. But for that to happen at the 82% mark? Yeah, that won't do it for me, and that is the last straw that would've made me rate this higher but got ruined because of their freaking rules.
Anyway, too much rambling, and I'm out. I hope other readers will enjoy this more than I did.
Book info: - Single dad x Nanny - Grumpy x Sunshine - Roommates with benefits??? - Abandonment issue - Dead wife 🤧 - No cheating, OPD, breakup - HFN (engaged)
His POV about his late wife.
"Jenny and I weren’t ever lovers not in the traditional sense. She was my best friend, someone I laughed with and trusted. When we felt like it, we fooled around, but that was where we drew the line. Until things got serious. She got pregnant. Marrying her was the easiest thing in the world. Nothing was complicated with us. We had an agreement, an understanding to raise our kid together and still live our lives the way we had been. But somewhere along the way, I realized I loved her. Not in the passionate way love is portrayed in the movies, but in the comfortable, warm and reliable way. I came to care for her more than anyone else in the world. And I never got the chance to tell her before she died."
“We always said we were just friends. But we were best friends. And we shared the same bed. And we had fun God, did we have fun. Without Jenny, I was too serious for my own good. But she reminded me to play, to live. I loved her, Chloe, I loved her with my whole heart, and it kills me every day that I lost her. That Ava lost her. That maybe, if we would have been more careful, if she wouldn’t have gotten pregnant she’d still be here.

Kandi never fails me, I've read 13 of her books and the majority are all 4-5 star reads for me every time!! Learn Your Lesson is the third book in the the Kings of Ice series and can be read as a standalone. I'm absolutely loving where this series is going and hope it never ends.
જ⁀ What to expect:
🏒 Angsty hockey romance 🏒 Single dad x nanny 🏒 Age gap 🏒 Close proximity 🏒 Found family 🏒 Gumpy/sunshine 🏒 Curvy fmc 🏒 Open door spice 🌶️🌶️🌶 🏒 Dual pov
જ⁀ Thoughts:
I knew Daddy P was going to be my favourite the soon as I was introduced to him in book one and his story delivered! This was such a beautiful and tender romance. Will had some of the best love declarations this series has seen and the bar was already so high. He has a grumpy exterior but he is such a teddy bear at heart. Him being a girl dad makes perfect sense and he was such a great dad to Ava despite navigating tragedy. This is the best single dad x nanny romance I've read! it didn't fall into the cliches, Will treated Chloe like a queen.
Chloe's bond with Ava was so sweet I could feel the love they shared for each other. I also loved the curvy girl rep which I hardly ever see in romance books. Chloe's bubbly and shy personality was the complete opposite of Will but they had so much chemistry and banter. She fit into their lives perfectly.
The romance was ANGSTY so by the time the spice arrived, it was the cherry on top. Kandi writes some of the best spice and this was no exception. The FMC was inexperienced which lead to some fun scenes. The popsicle scene 🥵 (iykyk).
This was sexy, emotional and so much fun!! I'll just have to suffer until the next book is out which looks like it's going to be pop star x broody hockey player 😍

Every book release is special. Every one of them is a mixture of excitement and nerves, a cocktail of the sweetest joy and the most paralyzing fear.
Up until now, Chloe and Will (and the rest of the crew) have been mine. They’ve existed in my head, in my heart, and in my soul.
Now, I share them with you.
I hope you love them just as fiercely. I hope their story sinks into your bones the way it did mine. I hope you smile and laugh, kick your feed, squeal with anticipation, fan yourself when the spice hits, swoon when Will Perry softens for this woman, and, yes, I even hope I squeeze a tear or two out of you in the end.
But before you download, before you read, allow me to just take this moment to say THANK YOU. Thank you for reading indie books, for reading MY books, and for cherishing my characters as if you created them. I could not do any of this without you.
this immediately became my favorite in the series!!
bedroom coach is already one of my favorite tropes but add in a grumpy, single dad who also plays hockey? I AM SAT BABE. and what do i always say about the stoic, quiet guys?????
first, their chemistry was ELECTRIC. i was dying for them to get together and i am an absolute sucker for a no kissing rule. the best part about it was you could tell will wanted more from her but wouldn’t let himself feel those things and ah, i love angst when it’s a tortured hero who won’t let himself fall in love.
second, both relationships developing with his daughter was just the best!!! he’s so grumpy and stoic that his little kindergartener started to adopt that too and just wanted her dad to know he was doing his best 🥹 but then you add in chloe, her sunshine-y teacher turned nanny, who showed her that she can be carefree and have fun and it was just so sweet.
this was one of the best opposites attract books i’ve ever read. the way they balanced each other out was EVERYTHING and i’m simply obsessed.
I love all things hockey, grumpy/sunshine, single dad romances, and Kandi Steiner so it's no surprise to anyone that I loved Learn Your Lesson!
Will Perry aka Daddy P is the one I've been waiting for. Broody goalie, single dad, and a heart of gold. He needed the right girl to crack his hard exterior and Chloe was the perfect girl for him. Who is better for this grumpy guy than a human in sunshine form, a kindergarten teacher who is sweet as can be and amazing with his daughter. That's Chloe Knott.
I'll be honest, even more than I loved Will and Chloe together, I loved seeing Chloe with his daughter Ava. Making them both smile and just lighting up their world. It made me smile so big. As hesitant and Will was to start anything with Chloe, she felt the same way due to her mom and grandma (the manhaters lol) and her relationship with Ava. As not only her teacher, but her nanny.
Will and Chloe have an undeniable connection and chemistry that's off the charts. But navigating what to do with it (aside from the obvious) is the issue. I will say, I loved the way it ended and was so happy with how everything turned out. Even if there were some turbulent times getting there.
Out of the three 'Kings of the Ice' books out so far, this is my favorite! After getting that little teaser for the next book... eek! I can't wait!
—hockey romance —single dad x nanny —close proximity —Cᷡѱո
Kandi Steiner really knows how to draw you in. With her sexy AF characters, the chemistry between them, and the spice, Learn Your Lesson was perfection.
Im an absolute SUCKER for a single dad romance, then mix hockey and some close proximity in there? SOLD. I always enjoy myself when reading Kandi’s books, and I love how much of a page turner they all are, you never want to put the book down until you’re done.
If you’re looking for a hockey romance that’s got a grumpy single dad and a sunshine nanny, this is a must read!!
i loved this book and chloe so much i cut 8 inches of my hair off (no seriously)
every one say hi to my newest favorite kandi steiner book!!! (sorry jamie & b)
from the moment i met daddy p in meet your match i just KNEWWW his book was going to be everything and boy was he worth the wait 😭
these books make me absolutely love living in tampa and make me LOVEEE my tampa bay lightning even more!! i drive past our arena every day for work and while reading it was so much fun to picture “well this is where this happened! and that happened at this place! 😂🫶🏼
idk about yall but single dad x nanny tropes is one of my absolute favorites right now and i honestly can confidently say that i think even my girls who aren’t fans of the widow/dead ex trope WILL still like this one! i think it was uniquely done in a way that even if that isnt your cup of tea usually the back story makes it easier to look past!!
the literal only negative thing i can say about this book is that her mom & grandma were so insane and even though they didnt make many appearances any time the did i was instantly annoyed LMAO
other than that i absolutely ADORED everything about this book, it was hot as fuck and emotional as fuck i will honestly never look at a popsicle the same way again but simultaneously running back to hinge to maybe find myself a daddy p who will spicy lessons with popsicles with me?! AHAHHA
~ some of my fav moments ~
Will almost smiled, his eyes lighting with curiosity. “You think I’d be the one to fall in love? “Obviously. Have you seen me?
“But I miss you more. IF YOU KNOW YOU FUCKING KNOWWWW 😭🫶🏼
“Say Please. “I’ll beg all night, if that’s what you want.
EEEKKK ANYWAYYYY daddy p is so hot and i dont wanna give too much away so im going to shut up now but just trust me that you need him, chloe and the rest of the ospreys/wags in your lifeeee!!!!
He is a professional player he had been in love, he was married and is now a widow and of course has had good sex.
She is a school teacher and a nanny to his kid and of course even being 26 she has only been with one man and it was awful.
Double standards, nothing new. Kandi Steiner is known to write pathetic heroines (I still remember Manhattan, heroine having all her firsts with the hero after he was having her as his rebound pos a breakup with a girl he loved)
Really, why the woman has to have such a pathetic sex life?? Of course her first time was so awful she basically gave up altogether and has never dated again. Of course hero's magic cock is the only one in the world able to make her feel pleasure. Of fucking course it makes no sense why she was having sex with him when he clearly does not appreciate her enough and is still grieving. I mean if her standards are so low she could have dated others befores. He was no prince in a white horse treating her like a prince and he is not the only handsome man in the world for it to make sense for her to break her celibate with him of all people.
t" elling me about the first, and only, man she’d been with. It was some stupid college boy who’d lasted all of six seconds. He obviously hadn’t even thought about her pleasure, let alone acted on it."
“It set realistic expectations. It proved to me what my mother and grandmother had always wanted me to know. “And what’s that? She shrugged, a sad smile on her lips as she glanced at me over her shoulder. “That love isn’t real, and men can only give so much. In the end, I have to take care of myself.
Really girl? You are opening your legs for a man who still loves another woman and doesn't even properly cherish you. Fuck off with this shit. A casual ONS would be better than that guy.
The same shit everyday gals, every single bad experience in heroines lives being used to justify why she is celibate. The same never applying to men.
“We always said we were just friends. But we were best friends. And we shared the same bed. And we had fun God, did we have fun. Without Jenny, I was too serious for my own good. But she reminded me to play, to live. I loved her, Chloe, I said, finally turning to face her. Her eyes were glossy when I met them. “I loved her with my whole heart, and it kills me every day that I lost her. That Ava lost her. That maybe, if we would have been more careful, if she wouldn’t have gotten pregnant she’d still be here. Why widow heroes are the worst heroes in a simple quote. Pairing this man with an inexpefienced heroine not only in the sexual but the emotional sense is just cruel and ridiculous
Before reading initial thoughts: What’s worse than a single dad book where he has a child with his ex-wife whom he loved but it didn’t worked out in the end? The answer is, a single dad book where he has a child with his ex-wife whom he loved but it didn’t worked out BECAUSE SHE’S DEAD adding to that a FMC who has never been with a man apart from that ONE FUCKING TIME she lost her virginity. *le siiiiiiiigh*
After reading: What irked me most about this is the power imbalance, which I guess is what this book is trying to turn into a hot smut scene about. The FMC never as in NEVER had a man in her 26 yrs apart from the boy she lost her virginity with. She had never been in love, been infatuated, never had orgasms with other people, never knew good sex until of course our valiant, super grumpy, hunk of an MMC swooped in. I would be kinda prolly okay with this if the MMC is let’s say a manho who’s never been in love but had a bad case of ONS which resulted with a child. BUT that didn’t happen, the MMC has had good sex, experienced infatuation, love for another woman and even marriage with his “best friend as he likes to call his dead wife. Soooo romantic 💜
Diving in with this I wasn’t expecting much, I was expecting the usual he can’t move on because he still so much so so much loves his dead wife then cue FMC being doormat. It didn’t happen in that exact scenario. Well not quite.
-From the blurb, Chloe hired by Will, became the nanny of Ava. Her goals include: making both Ava and Will smile and laugh again while she’s employed by him. I will admit, the bonding of Chole and Ava is cute and touching, the re-bonding of Ava and Will is emotional and smile-worthy.
-So Will and Chloe were attracted to one another but nothing physical happened, though they are starting to form an emotional connection where they talk about their past, open up their vulnerabilities, and all that. Will then proposed a kinda FWB situation without the friends part. Only sex and they don’t talk about their lives with each other so no more late night talks, no more meet cutes in the house, no more opening up. No kissing. No staying and sleeping together.
-This is where I hated how inexperienced the FMC was. The man always set the pace all the while Chloe can only agree and it’s upsetting because she was starting to feel more and of course it’s always the woman who feels it first 🙄 while Will keeps on pulling away as if he wasn’t the one always initiating sex, as he wasn’t the one wanting to know more and when he thinks the conversations were too deep, he’d pull away like the asshole he is and in the end, Chloe was always the one being disappointed. He even sad he knew he was hurting her but continued to fuck her anyways. DISGUSTING.
-Then one sunny day he suddenly missed her because Chloe finally learned self-respect and distanced herself, only communicating with him the bare minimum. Will then opened up and admitted that he missed his ex-wife but he misses Chloe more. Now, I would like to say that Chloe held her end, didn’t gave in and ended up saying, Gee thanks but you could shove your “miss you more up on your unstretched butthole.
-But that did not happen. Ava got injured then Chloe stepped up as usual then Will broke all the rules, kissed Chloe, made love, said he “needs her, slept together in the bed. Then in the morning, guess what? HE LEFT.AGAIN. Chloe then started crying because she realized she loved him. I can’t. How many times would you use the excuse he’s just confused, he has trauma from his previous loved ones, he needed time to regroup, he loves you so much he’s sacred (yuck yuck yuck). Like goddaaaaaaaamnnnnnn just make up your mind, you vile man. I don’t know how readers can still say SWOOOOOON DADDY P🙈 after what he be doing to Chloe over and over again. This part was in the 85% of the book and I honestly lost all hope to redeem him in my eyes.
I checked out. I *think* I finished it but can’t remember how it happened. All I know was that I was disgusted with Will and not satisfied with the resolution.
😮 Some quotes to showcase how swoony and sexy Daddy P is 😮
“And I knew I was hurting her. When we had sex, I left immediately after. When the talks got too deep, I’d close myself off to her and be a grumpy sonofabitch until she left me alone. I wasn’t too blind to see the hope in her eyes turn to disheartened pain every time this happened, but I was too emotionally stunted to do a damn thing about it. > THIS right there is the epitome of true love, folks! *faints*
“She rested her head on my chest, and I played with her wet hair, my eyes on the ceiling and hers somewhere across the room. And I hated myself more in that moment than I ever had in my entire fucking life. Because I was just counting down the minutes before I could leave. What the fuck is wrong with you? > YEAH I ALSO HATE YOU YOU DISGUSTING PRICK. Weaponizing his trauma to do nasty things on the woman who was nothing but kind.
“But the longer I was at the rink, the more I worked my body into the ground, the more I realized it wouldn’t stop my mind from racing. It wouldn’t change the fact that I didn’t know what all this meant or what came next. > How privilege of you to have the time and advantage of space and thinking whilst being hot and cold to the woman you “love”. Oh right…because you’re a grumpy hot man. Make sense.

ETA #2: Imma pass. The hero is extremely hot and cold under the guise of being a "grump" and constantly reminisces about his dead wife. Heroine hasn't been in love, has been celibate after losing her virginity to a dude in college. No thanks. I know this book will leave me frustrated. Honestly, Kandi Steiner is a hit or a miss with me🤷🏻♀
ETA: someone was kind enough to give some spoilers in the comments and now we know that the H wasn't "in love" with his dead wife - he just had love for her. apparently they were friends, hooked up in college and then found out she was pregnant and got married. she died a month after giving birth to their daughter. so, hopefully i won't be sick to my stomach if and when i decide to read it. imma take one for the team and give this book a chance when i'm in the mood.
self note: this has the dead wife trope. meaning that the H loved his late wife. idk how to feel about that. add to that that the h is inexperienced *cringes* i usually hate the dead spouse trope so imma wait for some spoiler reviews because all i see rn are four and five star arc reviews😬
I was looking forward to Daddy P's book since book one and I 100% thought it would be my favorite because of how grumpy Will is! This one was definitely a fun one and I really love Will... but I am shocked to say it doesn't beat book 2 for me. Watch Your Mouth is just ELITE at this point.
I LOVE how grumpy Will is and I also enjoy how different and unique Chloe is.. but her connection with Ava is just everything. 🥹
I will say some parts were slightly cringe for me and I think that is just my personal issue with reading about inexperienced fmc's but - getting off from a pillow is just so weird to me and this is the second time it was mentioned in a book where the female is inexperienced and I hate it. 🤣
Aside from that - I did love this especially when Will just gave in and let his guard down with Chloe.
"home was wherever she was."
-sports (hockey) -single dad -nanny -age gap -forced proximity -inexperienced fmc -teaching moments -grumpy x sunshine 🌶️🌶️.5
First I want to thank Valentine PR for the arc of this stunning book. I am forever grateful.
Learn Your Lesson is the very first book of Kandi I ever read. And I completely and utterly fell in love with her writing style and the characters she created. She captured my heart and held it all the way through.
The book starts with Will Perry. He is at hockey practice and suddenly notices his daughter Ava watching him. Her nanny is nowhere to be seen and he is furious. He quickly spots Chloe Knott, her kindergarten teacher. When he talks to Chloe she tells him the nanny never showed up. And she couldn't get in touch with anyone so she brought his daughter here. She offers to look after her until dinner time and he is grateful for that.
When Chloe brings Ava to his house that night he is still scowling and so mad. Everynanny he hired thus-far was either incompetent or trying to seduce him and now he needs to find another one. Chloe loves Ava to pieces and she offers to become her nanny. They agree on a trial period and see what happens after that.
And that is what kickstarts the story. Will is immensely grumpy and keeps everyone at a distance. He scowls and grunts his way through life and his daughter has the same scowl on her face. They both rarely laugh. And it's Chloe's mission to make them both smile.
This book has so much heart and soul. My heart lived for Chloe, Will and Ava. Ava just instantly captured my heart. And that incredibly delicious slow burn lust between Chloe and Will was just top notch. I felt it burn in my soul.
And I grinned and laughed so much while I read this book. I adore Chloe's cat's. And that scene where the cats sneak in the main house had me laughing like an idiot.
I love the emotions so much. I felt both characters aching lust. But also how their love slowly grows. And them pushing each other was just amazing!
Kandi, you definitely got a new fan in me! I am gonna buy the first two books as well and devour those as fast as I can!
5 huge stars for this amazing, loving, fun and incredible book!
Kandi is back on the ice with the Tampa Bay Ospreys with Learn Your Lesson. If you're anything like me, you've been savoring Daddy P's from the last two books. But Kandi did a terrific job with Chloe and Will's story; as they were fun, cute, and so wholesome.
For his daughter, Ava, Will would burn the world. He has had an awful lot of bad nannies and nobody appears to be able to fill the role with his life stretched so thin. In pop's, Chloe, Ava's kindergarten teacher, who also nannies outside the classroom to pay off her debts. Chloe seems to be the only one who understands Ava. She soon finds herself moving into Will's pool house, but the more time she spends in the Perry household, she can't seem to get her mind off the beautiful man that's invading her thoughts. Through late-night chats and time spent together, Will and Chloe form a friendship that soon leads to a delicious decision as they agree to help each other out in the bedroom. Will soon discovers an unexperienced Chloe. He guides her through her desires as the rules start to blur and so do the feelings. True love transforms into exquisite new beginnings for them both.
The Greek God himself, DADDY P, you'll are in for a treat. 🤭 But poor Daddy P has endured a lot. As a result, he doesn't show his emotions much; instead, he is very focused and has high expectations for both the people in Ava's life and his career. I love that he shows Chloe such sweet little moments, throughout the story. Chloe is quite whimsical and nurturing to me, as she is such an astonishing character. She discovered her voice, sexuality, confidence, and finding wonderful friendships. She was such a delight, as she finds her own prince charming and fairy tale in Will.
Kandi, she knocked it out of the park with the spice this time around 👀 Yet, the friendships for both Will and Chloe, were the gems in this story. I'll be counting down the days for Alek's book as he's dealing with his own set of hurricanes.🤭
Forever greatful to Kandi and Tina for the ARC and the privilege of being on your team. 💚
Learn Your Lesson is a single dad x nanny, grumpy x sunshine, hockey romance part of Kandi Steiner’s Kings of the Ice series. The first book and this third book in the series are definitely my favorites.
Will is a gruff, hockey player, who the team affectionately have coined “Daddy P as he takes care of them but also is an actual single dad to his daughter Ava. He lost his wife shortly after Ava was born and his life hasn’t been the same since, now his focuses are his daughter and hockey. When the story kicks off, Will has been having issues keeping a nanny, so when Chloe, Ava’s kindergarten teacher rolls in so effortlessly and gets along with his daughter so well, he feels like he found the perfect nanny replacement!
Chloe is a kindergarten teacher who loves her job and always dreamed of romance, falling in love, and having a family of her own one day. Instead, her social life is nonexistent and she lives with her 3 cats. She grew up with a mom and grandma who both were left and have told Chloe her whole life that all men leave and to not trust their promises. She ends up working for Will and caring for Ava while he’s busy with hockey and she quickly falls for this adorable little family. Soon Will and Ava are feeling all the things and we get loads of steam, spicy lessons, and a no-strings attached type of setup.
This was a fun, easy one to breeze through and I loved that it was Kandi’s first single dad romance! After seeing Will throughout the series, it was fun to finally get his story, especially for the popsicle scene alone! Iykyk 🤭
Kandi Steiner is officially one of my comfort writers. I love the way she represents her character and their pov and balance the emotional and fun side perfectly.
After reading Save your breath, I couldn't help but pick up Daddy P's book. I was drawn towards him and he didn't disappoint me at all. I loved the book so much. One of the best things about Kandi is she knows how to portray a child's character.
Sure the fmc pissed me off sometimes when she was incredibly understanding, even when he was being impossible but I couldn't bring myself to dislike her, she was too supportive, too kind. She was slowly and cautiously trying to trust men, despite her upbringing which gave her every reason not to trust men. She had every reason to be bitter, every right to shut herself off. And yet, even when he was impossible, she remained patient.
Will was an incredible father, always putting his daughter first, making sure she had everything she needed. Even in the depths of his grief, even when he was struggling, and mourning his wife his love for her never wavered. I love how tender and supportive he was with Chloe. The way he slowly made space in his heart for her, and cared and loved her has my heart.
I love their little family of three. Chloe and Ava was adorable. Chloe helped her express her childish nature freely. Their interactions were adorable.
I loved the other characters as well especially Chef Arushi and Livia. I'm so excited for her book, she's a firecracker.
Rating: 10/10⭐️ Spice: 🌶🌶🌶 Tropes: Single dad; grumpy x sunshine; sports; nanny; friends with benefits Quote:Fuck, I hated that. I loved it. I detested it. I craved it.
Will (Daddy P) Can't find a compaent nanny to save his life and when he see's how good his daughters Kindergarten teacher is with her he asks her to be her nanny and willing to pay a premium for it... She wants to provide for her mom + grandma he wants a great nanny but sometimes you get more than you bargain for like feelings for the nanny. it was only supposed to be to let off steam..
KANDIE MFIN STEINER DID IT AGAIN. This book was everything I wanted and more for Daddy P's book. He was so so perfectly broody and grumpy and my oh my, my heart ached for what he had been through and how that made him who he was today. Chloe was EXACTLY who he needed all sunshine and light and so so patient. I just loved it so much.. & Ava omg she was so grumpy in the beginning and watching her open up and become more of a kid throughout the book it was so beautiful to read. also can we talk about the no kissing rule.. it's such a superior one.
This was the most delicious slow burn i've read in a hot min where i could FEEEEL the tension for so long it was almost painful for me. THANK YOU MA'AM. & can we get a round of applause for that first kiss? KANDI KNOWS HOW TO WRITE EM'

4.5 stars - I've been waiting for Daddy P's story since we met him at the start of this series. Will lost his wife when his daughter was an infant, and he hasn't been the same since then. The famous goalie is at his wits end finding a competent nanny for his daughter. Everyone either quits or just tries to hop in his bed. Enter Chloe, his daughter's kindergarten teacher. She is great with kids, and seems to have a special bond with his daughter that makes her perfect for his offer to make her a live-in nanny. Given her teaching salary and love for Will's daughter, it makes perfect sense to care for her outside of school, while also helping her grow outside of the shell she's been in.
Of course, neither Will or Chloe can deny the chemistry between them, and they start a little benefits with no strings attached situationship. The issue? Chloe's glaring lack of intimate experience, and both of them growing attached in a way that was not the deal, given Will's still not over his wife's death, and Chloe doesn't want to depend on a man. These two definitely had a great time in the bedroom, with Will teaching Chloe a thing or two. I enjoyed seeing her sexual confidence grow as she learned not to be ashamed of what she liked or wanted.
My two hangups that stopped this from being 5 stars: 1. The fast track to anal. I had this same complaint in the series' first book. The author tends to have her characters do VERY little prep work, if any at all, before they just thrown anal sex in the mix. I understand we have to suspend reality a bit, but that mess is gone hurt without the proper prep work, and I truly don't understand how her characters enjoy their first booty shots unprepared.
2. One of Will's issues was his broken relationship with his father. The author discussed how he and his father had a hard time after his mom died. It was discussed enough that I thought the author was maybe setting up a scene or two of Will sitting down with his dad to maybe get on a path to healing their relationship. However, the most we got was Will telling Chloe towards the end that he wanted to give his dad a call and try to fix things. I mean, I guess that's enough for some people, but for me, if you're going to bring up something as emotional as that, I'd like to see it through.
Aside from that, Will's daughter was absolutely adorable, and her bond with Will and Chloe was one of my favorite parts of the book. Their accidental family unit was fun to be a part of and I can't wait for the next book!
TROPES: pro hockey, single dad/nanny, age gap (not a big one), opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, lessons in bed
Can't wait for it.🫶 Our best goalie WILL PERRY(Daddy P) & his daughter's kindergarten teacher.😍 One more silent brody guy to my list? YES YES YES
Edit : Finally I read it🤓(my expectations for this book was sky high)[Might found some SPOILERS] 4.2✨✨ Will Perry was such a dedicated person. He has some faults but who doesn't have 💁🏼♀. His love for Ava is heart melting, he was trying to be a good Dad. He knew that coz of him Ava was a grumpy silent girl & he doesn't want that for her😭. He was attracted to Chloe from the start 🫠. But their chemistry was explosive when it happened ✨. I don't like this type of plot when significant other spouse dead & they still love them😔 I mean who wouldn't? His love for Jenny still a heartbreak for him. But his love for Chloe? It was like fire, passionate etc.
Chloe was a sunshine girl who's mission is to make laugh both father& daughter. And she accomplished that😎. She was such a sweet teacher & partner. But love is like a sin in her family due to her Mom& Grandma🙂. She was so selfless with Ava&Will, taking care of them🫠. She even recommended Will to talk about Jenny to his daughter so that she remembers her, i mean who does that?😮
Ava was like Eeylore from Winnie the pooh but not depressed . She was a silent girl but Chloe unravels Ava from grumpy self to a normal kid. She's such sweetheart 😙. Chelf Arushi? She was such a badass😼. Other characters like Maven,Vince,Jaxson,Grace,Livia,Aleks & every support buddies get together was always sweet.
Here are my fav moments: "Still, I wasn’t giving up not on either of them. One day, I would make them laugh."😼
“Manners of a goat.”💀 Chelf Arushi🤙🏼 “First Im a turkey, now I’m a goat? -( yes you are Will)😂
"It made me wonder, for the first time in five years, why the hell I was so grumpy all the goddamn time."💀😂
"Just a year ago, she was barely speaking. Months ago, she was barely smiling, never laughing."- it was Chloe's magic 🪄🫠
“He is such a bewakoof. - Chef Arushi rocks 🤣
“Because I miss her, I do, I said, turning to face Chloe. “But I miss you more.
And Pretzel 😏😏😏 you know
P.S : I'm waiting for Livia & Carter's book but we're getting Aleks & Mia's😁. #1 Meet your Match : 4.5✨✨ #2 Watch your Mouth : 5✨✨
Single dad-nanny books really do it for me. And a Hockey sports romance on top of all that? Yes please. This hit all the right buttons. Grumpy Goalie widower Will Perry and kindergarten teacher Chloe Knot were adorable. And his little girl Ava was cuteness overload. I loved that she wanted to play Hockey just like her Daddy. 😭 I have never grinned harder at a Disney World trip. This was both sweet and sexy. This also had steam and dirty talk. I loved how creative and whimsical Chloe was in contrast to Will's gruff serious temperament. I loved that she was a total homebody who loved crafting and making her own clothes. I loved how she came up with ways to try and get the grouchy hero to laugh and get Ava to smile. Chloe likes to keep to herself and her hobbies and not ashamed of it but also sweet and open to new experiences which I found refreshing and relatable. Opposite dynamics like that make things so much more interesting. I also loved that we got to see her in teacher mode as well, you can tell how much she loves her job and her kids. She's a nurturer at heart and the way she got Ava to come out of her shell was so sweet. That Daddy Donuts Day in her class was too fucking cute.
I've had a bad track record with this author, I don't like how she contrives drama and don't like how she writes her heroines in particular. The main reason I decided to give her one last try with this book was this is also an age gap and grumpy hero x sunshine heroine. I wanted to see how she writes adult "sweet" heroines. I was still skeptical going in but glad to say it was wonderful for the most part. The last 70ish pages dragged the story down a bit and the stupid factor that Steiner's characters are known for reared it's ugly head with the miscommunication and insecurities playing heavily in the 3rd act. I thought the whole "my matriarchy" thing was dumb and over the top. Thankfully, it wasn't heavily focused on throughout the book like I was worried about. Chloe was still very likable and managed to be everything sweet and kind that her bitter mother and grandmother aren't. Chloe was raised by a single mother and single grandmother who both had been abandoned by their men. So she's grown up in a restrictive isolated environment where the gospel and rule in their house was always "men are evil". I'm sorry but I found those two awful with how they brainwashed and took out all their bitterness on this girl into believing all men aren't trustworthy. That's not a healthy environment to raise a kid in and I'm glad she got to at least call them out on it. But I still don't think it's love or protection what they did. It's toxic. I also thought Chloe's one sexual experience in college solidifying her family's opinion of men being trash was a bit much and laughable considering it was 1 sloppy hookup and not even a relationship. Her willing to go her whole life without love or a relationship because she "owes it to her matriarchy" was insane. But her sweet goofy disposition and willing to explore things with Will balanced it out. The no kissing rule drove me nuts and Will really needed to suck it up and get his head out of his ass a little sooner. I don't mind grieving spouse characters but I felt the hero's fear and panic over losing someone else like his late wife was just a tad much considering it sounded very much like a marriage of convenience rather than love marriage. They ended up getting married after their casual hookups ended up in an accidental pregnancy. He literally states he wasn't in love with his late wife Jenny and how it was a friends with benefits so all the angst and hand wringing over not wanting to try again didn't carry enough weight for me. If he lost the love of his life I could understand his crippling fear and panic more. There was also a very awkward discrepancy mistake regarding Ava's age when her mother died. In one scene the hero is showing a picture of his late wife holding baby Ava and says Ava was "3 months old" in that picture but later on when he reveals to Chloe how Jenny died he says Ava was only "2 months old" when Jenny died. The math wasn't mathing.
I'll be honest I feel like Steiner needs a good editor who will edit down scenes because this book suffered in the last leg in scene padding to drag the story out to a conclusion. While I zoomed through most of it because the story was great, the last 100 pages faltered with dragged out scenes with characters questioning everything in their heads and dragging their feet just to communicate. I had this same problem in Hail Mary. When you can literally tell the moment when the author is stalling for time is when you know the story needs to wrap up. Please authors don't do this. There is no reason or point in dragging things out. And once the couple reconcile I don't need 30 pages worth of closure. You saw the conflict coming to head a mile away but Chloe going from sensible to insecure ninny like a light switch who needs to replay everything in her head over and over again and wanting to run to her mother felt forced.
Also, the character of Livia? So insufferably over the top. Can we please stop it with the overly-sexualized, aggressively sex-crazed, stereotypical friend in the girl group who makes dick jokes, humps thin air and makes BDSM jokes 24/7? Like literally everything that came out of this girl's mouth is either a sex joke or sexualizing the hero. NOBODY ACTS LIKE THIS IN REAL LIFE. It's so obnoxious and unrealistic. Samantha Jones she is not. I almost feel bad for Carter if this girl is his HEA. :/ And Dear Author, if you are gonna market your book as an "age gap" romance and put it in your blurb at least tell us how old your hero is. 😩 That's such a pet peeve of mine. You clearly know how old your character is or else you wouldn't have tagged it as an age gap so why not share that with the rest of the class? Why is such an important detail like that hard to include? Story is over and I still have no idea how old Will is. 😐 #irked
But minor gripes aside, really enjoyed this. So good! <3
Kandi, I don’t know how you write the perfect romances. I read every single one in less than a day. Learn Your Lesson was no different.
Daddy P & Chloe stole my heart. I absolutely loved them. They are so adorably sweet and incredibly sexy. Their chemistry was electric. The tension was definitely palpable! Daddy P was worth the wait!
This is equally sexy as it is sweet. Kandi delivered on the spicy lesson scenes but I didn’t doubt she would after Blind Side. Plus the popsicle scene was hyped for good reason! 🥵
I really enjoyed the found family aspect too. Chloe always felt alone but she found friends and love throughout the book. It was so heartwarming to see her development friendships with the girls from previous books as well as Chef Patel and Will’s daughter Ava.
I couldn’t stop listening to this. So yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook. The narrators did a fabulous job, especially the one for Daddy P!
Can’t gush about this enough! Just read it when it comes out 😆

I have been waiting for Daddy P & boy did Kandi deliver with this one 👏🏼 I love a good book with some ✨spicy lessons but the fact that this was single dad x nanny just makes it so much hotter. The chemistry between these two was off the charts, per usual with Kandi’s MCs.
Thank you Kandi for the ARC & ALC! The narrators did such an amazing job with this one. All I wanted to do was listen & listen until I was finished completely. This book basically consumed my thoughts for the entire two days it took me to listen to it fully.
Tropes: - Hockey Romance - Single Dad x Nanny - Spicy Lessons - Forced Proximity - Grumpy x Sunshine - Opposites Attract - Found Family - Age Gap
I love these books because they’re insanely easy to binge in a day or 2! Great rom-com! Good palate cleanser! Kandi, girl, I know you’re on here! Let’s do lunch 😉😝
I ADORED THIS BOOK. I was not expecting this to be one so darn good. I mean, I always love Kandi and her books but this book became an instant favorite. Right up there with A Love Letter to Whiskey and Weightless. We have such amazing characters here. We have a curvy heroine (AMEN) and a single daddy you will fall in love with! We have scorching steamy scenes and trust me, you will never look at a popsicle the same way EVER again! I adored little Ava. Such a unique, brilliant child! This gave me all the feels. I connected with Chloe so much. I cannot wait for the next book! I think it will be an awesome one as well.
