The next target of a time traveling killer, crime reporter Jane Colby finds herself in the hands of a warlord from the future sent to protect her--and in his hands is just where she wants to be.
Based on the premise and some reviews I've read, I knew this book had a bit of "everything": romance, sci-fi, time travel, suspense and, of course, sizzling love scenes. With a combo like that, I was sure this would be at least a fun read - and I was right. :D
Baran Arvid is a 24th century Warlord(*) who's sent back to the 21st century in order to kill the time-traveling Jumpkiller Kalig Druas before he murders his next victim Jane Colby, the owner of a small town local newspaper and crime reporter.
(*) Warlords are genetically engineered humans, much stronger than the strongest "normal" human and unbeatable in hand-to-hand combat. A neuroweb combat computer woven through their brain gives them access to a vast data bank and information from sensor implants scattered throughout their bodies. In sum, Warlords are highly intelligent killing machines, with well-deserved and ugly reputations. Baran is no exception.
Baran knows that the only way to catch Druas and prevent the Jumpkiller from murdering Jane is to stick to her like glue. But first, he needs to explain her who he is and convince her he isn't an asylum escapee. That takes some time, but once Jane is convinced, she has practically no qualms about having Baran accompanying her everywhere - including the bathroom and, guess what, her bed - until his mission is completed and he travels back to the future.
Do I really have to say that they get down and dirty right on the 1st night he spends at her house, on her bed? I didn't think so, LOL. Despite all the sex they have - which was a lot, if I may say so - they don't forget that Druas is still out there and need to be stopped... At least, I guessed they didn't, because it was hard to tell with all the moaning and panting they did. As expected, Baran and Jane manage to fall in love with each other while tracking Druas, but there's no future for them because he'll be gone as soon as he eliminates Druas, right? Hmmm, time travel can be so confusing...
I had a great time reading this book. It was fun, fast-paced, with lots of steamy love scenes and very likable (but not exactly three-dimensional) characters. Ms. Knight could have dedicated more effort to develop her characters, IMHO. Baran was OK, but I felt like I never got to know Jane that well. Didn't she have any friends besides Tom Reynolds, the detective in charge of the murders commited by Druas? The few scenes she had at work didn't make me see any connection between her and her employees. What about her missing mother? Why drag that mystery all through the story, only to drop it with no explanation at the end? Druas' case was worst, as he was pretty much a one-dimensional villain who didn't seem that smart to me. Anyway, the fast pace of the story prevented me from dwelling on that too much.
My biggest issue with this book was the time travel theory developed by Ms. Knight. I spent a lot of time trying to understand it - and almost gave myself a headache in the process - but the truth is, it didn't make sense!
Exhibit A: If traveling back in time and changing past events creates a paradox that destroys the universe, why wasn't the universe destroyed when Druas traveled back the 1st time and committed those murders? Before he traveled back that 1st time, those murders had been non-existent.
Exhibit B: Considering that Druas was originally from the 24th century, he knew what happenned in the past. So why didn't he anticipate Baran's actions and avoid them? The same could be said about Baran, but Ms. Knight gave a flimsy excuse for Baran's being in the dark about what happened in the 21st century.
Oh well, time travel by itself is a hard concept to understand, so I cut Ms. Knight some slack. And once I stopped trying to understand it and accepted it in blind faith, I really enjoyed this read. This was fiction, not a Physics Essay. Sometimes I'm too smart for my own good, LOL.
was my first Angela Knight novel, and I will be reading more from this author. The characters were great, especially Frieka, Baran's talking sidekick timberwolf. Freika spent most of the book trying to eat Jane's cat Octopussy, but by the end, I think he had a secret crush on her even though he called Jane sick and twisted for suggesting such an unnatural thing. (lol)
Baran Arvid is a genetically engineered Viking Class Warlord sent from the future to save the life of Jane Colby, the owner of a small town newspaper. The author isn't clear on why Jane is targeted by a futuristic serial killer, although it could be that it's just one of those random things and she could have been any woman at any time in history. Anyway, Baran is sent nearly 400 years into the past and his job is to make sure she doesn't die. He is given little information because along with saving her, he has to make sure he doesn't create a paradox that can destroy the future of mankind. Too much information could lead him to make decisions that prevent events from playing out the way they are meant to happen. What kind of pressure is that??
Although the book was written in 2004 and that's the setting (although the author never specifically mentions a date), it had a distinct 1980's-early 90's feel to me. It could be the fact that Baran and Frieka kept talking about how archaic everything is (computers, cars, etc). I love that part of the book...watching characters taken out of time and place and seeing how they react to the world around them. The author did a good job of creating and describing the technology of the future. Without giving away the ending, I could have used a few more chapters just to get a better feel for the world where Baran and Freika live. Gevalope burger, anyone?
The romance between Baran and Jane was hot, although that's probably not an adequate description...it was more like red-hot burning flames hot enough to singe your eyeballs. (lol) The good thing about the future where Baran lives is that there are tons more genetically engineered Warlords just like him. Anyone up for a trip to the future? I know I am!
A Jack the Ripper themed time travel/sci fi romance and it kicks booty!!!
I have had this book on my wishlist for so many years, like probably since I started blogging have I had this one on my list. Thats a dang long time to have a book on one's TBR. But I really enjoyed it and was super funny. It definitely had a OG feel to the writing style of it, but I quite enjoyed it. I really enjoyed how this story was developed and the elements of sci fi with time travel left me on the edge of my seat.
So basically the gist of the story is that the hero, is from the future about 300 years from our time period. He is a elite warrior, and called a "warlord" which is a protector and goes on all sorts of missions. So think secret ops of his time. He is called to task on a mission to go back in time to (our day, and try to rescue a woman who is about to be killed by the Jack The Ripper who has been causing ripples of time killing innocent women. But when he meets Jane, chemistry explodes between them. He is determined to protect her even knowing that he will be leaving and that their time together is very temporary.
What was most intriguing was first their first meeting, because its kinda stalkerish but I was down for it. haha There is such great alpha vibes in this one and we also see how well these two get along together even when they are fighting. And the warlord's sidekick wolf creature, yeah he was awesome. Always trying to get them to have sex together, it was pretty awesome! I was so fascinated in seeing how they came together. Now the whole Jane coming to the truth, I was on board with. I was so happy that she didn't fight what was the truth in front of her. It was quite refreshing to have an heroine who was on board with it all and willing to do her part.
I wouldn't say that this is a perfect book, the pacing is a bit off at times throughout it and it did have a style of writing that took some adjustment because this style of writing is NOT common these days. But I was really drawn into this couple and adored seeing them together. I am curious about this world and this author for sure. I definitely will be exploring more of her works and soon!
Update: August 3, 2022: I still think about this book...
Wow, I finally found a book worth reading! The best book I've read in a while and definitely one of the most interesting ones.
The whole time travel thing was at first hard to understand, but I get it now. The only thing I don't get is why Jane was designated as the woman to protect and not the others and why Druas wanted to kill her. Also, wouldn't Druas in his own time read that the killer had stopped, so he would be able to figure out that he never killed Jane?? Also, did they leave Druas's body in Jane's time or carry his body to the future?
Actually I take that back about understanding the future part. I still don't understand it lol
This was the first book by I read and I was immediately hooked. Equal parts erotica, suspense, and sci-fi, combined with a time-travel element this was a real pleasure to read.
The two main characters, Baran *pant pant* Arvid and Jane "one-of-the-non-annoying-heroines-I-like" Colby had some major chemistry going on, both in (hence the panting) and out of the bedroom, the villain was sickeningly twisted (just how I like 'em), the pacing was good, the story well-thought out and plotted...And the ending. Oh, boy, don't get me started on the ending.
It was even better the second time around. ;) 4 ½ stars
I can't put my finger on it, but I would have liked something a little more creative or different about the plot and storyline. I didn't like that the warlord was not given enough tools by his superiors to properly fight Druas. They had an explanation for this in the end, but I didn't like it. Other parts of the ending were interesting and good. Although it is not a favorite, I did enjoy the book and plan to try another from this author.
DATA: Sexual content: strong. Setting: current day small town in U.S. Copyright: 2004. Genre: time travel science fiction romance.
OTHER BOOKS: For a list of my reviews of other Angela Knight books, see my 2 star review of “The Forever Kiss posted 9/09/08.
Hmmm, well this book was....interesting. Not at all what I was expecting really. I really enjoyed the plot of Baran coming from the future to protect Jane from the evil time-jumping serial killer (AKA Jack the Ripper). There was tons of lovin' in this book and some of it was over the top, but I can skim over those and still be okay if the plot's good. Thankfully, that was the case here. I'm not sure if I'd read another Angela Knight book, but this one was entertaining.
Warlord Baran meets journalist Jane when he jumps through time to save her from a jumpkiller, which is a serial killer who jumps through time committing crimes... along with his speaking dog.
Yes. A speaking, wise-cracking wolf.
The pair stick to Jane like glue in order to protect her which involves sleeping in her bed and watching her in the bathroom. Needs must and all that.
During all that they set about tracking down the serial killer who has his sights set on Jane and get it on in every spare moment.
I liked this story but I didn’t love it. I saw some great 5 star reviews from GR friends so I was excited by this erotic suspense.
I think the storyline was ok but it dragged a little in the middle. The couple seem to just chase behind the killer for most of the book. That’s ok but I guess I just wanted something a bit unexpected to happen.
Baran and Jane get it on really quickly. Like the first night. I think I was expecting them to hold off slightly longer, especially Jane who seems to adjust to a time-travelling assassin from the future with red eyes and a talking wolf in record time. One minute she’s scared, the next she’s ‘creaming. What is it with books where the heroine has ‘cream? I seem to be getting it in every book I read lately.
Overall, It was hot though. I liked Baran’s post berserker sex rage! But it wasn’t as mega hot as I was expecting. It was a tad repetitive. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I am eroticed out for the time being.
Minor gripes were that some scenes felt a bit choppy. They just faded to black or I got lost in places not knowing what was going on.
The humour of the alien characters made them feel a bit less alien if that makes sense. There was a lot of light hearted banter which sometimes undermined the suspense.
And. When was this book written? Her newspaper is printed on metal plates still. I think that died in the eighties!
Overall impression: finished the book but couldn't really tell you what happened. Very forgettable and boring. The only good part was the spice but I'm not an insta-love kind of girl so it's a pass for me. 👋
Best bits: Human / Warlord Time Traveller Forced proximity Shared bed Freika the wolf's witty remarks Spice that wasn't just the same scene on repeat HEA
Worst bits: Heroine is a journalist Tries to evoke sympathy towards journalists because they're "misunderstood" and just trying to do their job. Well, if your job is to harass people straight after they've lost a loved one or when it's unwanted at ANY time then you're not going to get any sympathy from me. #FreeBritney Insta-lust romance Love bombing after 3 days of knowing each other 🚩 Petty arguments Weak storyline Non-existent world building (sad for a sci-fi novel) Villain's first appearance was at the 50% mark The book cover (gives more of a historical romance kind of vibe than a futuristic romance) Expensive e-book
I'm disappointed. I read a book of the Time Hunter series some years ago and liked it. But this book wasn't good. All they had was sex, sex, sex. Oh and let's not forget the stupid, unrealistic behavior.
Also, the hero was a dominant jerk and the heroine was like yes, you can be a jerk, as long as you fuck me good. Huh? What did I miss...? I think, it was the actual plot I missed...
Jane Colby has just come home from reporting about a particularly grisly murder in her small town, and all she wants to do is slip back into bed and finish reading her steamy romance novel. Unfortunately, or fortunately, she finds an enormous, muscle bound Warlord comfortably ensconced in her home whose telling her that she's in danger from a killer from the future, whose killing in the past. She's understandably suspicious of this man whose claiming to be some time traveler and she hasn't even met his talking wolf Reika yet. Baran Arvid has been recruited by the Temporal Enforcement Agency to protect Jane from a vicious killer whose mutilating women throughout time and selling his recordings as entertainment. Though Baran is not an Enforcement agent, the agency has uncovered videos of him in the past and know he needs to be here in this time period to stop this killer. They send him back without any information so he can't affect the time continuum, certain that whatever does happen is meant to be. Baran expected this to be a cut and dry mission. Save the girl, kill the bad guy and then get on with his solitary existence. So when he finds her little red negligee and falls in lust hard, he's surprised. He's fascinated by this little native and admires her courage and intelligence, as well as her her lush body. Jane becomes very precious to Baran and he's soon obsessed with the need to protect her, desperate to try and heal the wounds that settled in his heart the day he failed to protect the girl he loved when he was young. Along their journey the ice surrounding Baran's heart begins to thaw, but he soon remembers that when this is over, he'll be sent home and Jane will have to stay in her time, separating them by centuries. The killer on Jane's trail becomes increasingly determined to get to her and begins to taunt them, hoping to get Baran to lower his guards. It takes Jane's newfound courage and the help of some friends to defeat the killer, but when it's over, she has to make a choice that could risk the fate of the world itself. Or she could grasp onto a love that will forever change their lives and follow Baran wherever he goes.
While this is a Terminator styled romance with hints of paranormal, science fiction and time travel mixed in, it's not over the top. Angela Knight keeps everything tight and moving forward at a brisk pace and sets the sheets on fire with her scorching love scenes! Baran is deliciously dominate due to his highly charged, genetically altered hormones and their love scenes will make you red in the face, while making you desperate for more. He looks like a throwback to the Viking era, while being a futuristic Warlord who is one of his race's best assassins. He's determined to protect Jane whether she wants his help or not and he and his faithful partner/sidekick Reika keep a firm grasp on her. Reika adds a lot of fun humor to the story too and helps to keep things light. He's a genetically altered Timber wolf who talks just like he's one of the guys and he's hysterical. The banter between the three of them keeps the story moving along and helps the reader to forget that there is a vicious killer on the loose whose stylized killings mark an eerie resemblance to Jack the Ripper. Which was a brilliant ploy by Angela Knight. To have the killer be someone whose so infamous throughout time for his brutality upped the fear factor and made it a much more desperate situation. Angela Knight didn't need to waste time having Baran try to put the fear of God into Jane, she was already terrified and rightfully so. If I was Jane, I'd have latched onto Baran and never let go. Well, I would have latched onto him anyway so that's probably not a good analogy. LOL.
This was an excellent story and a great start to the Warlord/Time Hunter series. While Angela Knight is the self proclaimed "Queen of Smut" I've really enjoyed her books to date and think she's a great authoress. Her worldbuilding is tight and suspenseful and there's hardly any fat in her stories. The sex is as hot as can be yet I still enjoyed Baran and Jane when they weren't rolling around sexing it up in the woods. There's humor, suspense and a lot of love here and I highly recommend Jane's Warlord as an excellent read. Enjoy!
This book is more like a prequel to the Time Hunter series, and is usually considered book 1 in the Warlord series, but the books/series do intertwine. However, they can be read as standalones. In this futuristic world, there are different types of humans and aliens scattered across the galaxy with high-tech gadgets. Some are just normal humans with no special abilities, but others were genetically altered before their birth to be machine-like warriors. These warriors, Warlords and Warfem (men and women respectively), have computer and sensor implants, making them tougher and smarter than most normal humans. They come from the planet Vardon, a matriarchal society, and there are different houses the warriors belong to. 23rd century genetically engineered Warlord Baran Arvid goes back in time to save 21st century reporter Jane Colby from a time traveling serial killer. Afterward, he and his partner Freika (a genetically-enhanced talking timber wolf) must return to their own time to continue fighting a war between the Vardonese and the Xerans, and he’s anxious to finally take his revenge on a cruel Xeran general. Baran is a cold, ruthless, calculating man, and expects instant obedience. Jane, however, proves courageous and stubborn, and he doesn’t understand the new feelings she inspires in him. Jane Colby often reports on murders for her family-owned newspaper, but never expected a killer to pick her as a victim. She teams up with Baran and Freika, and is astounded by their time traveling story and that the infamous Jack the Ripper from Victorian England is really from the future. Now Jack/Druas is in her little town killing innocent women. Jane and Baran are strong but deeply troubled characters. She’s still dealing with emotional trauma from her childhood, and he’s lost in a bitter rage over the senseless deaths of his teammates years earlier. The sex scenes were super hot and showed the depths of the H/h’s growing feelings for one another, but there were a lot of them, which slowed the pacing. I absolutely loved Freika. He was an awesome character and added a lot of humor to the story. His hatred toward Jane’s cat was hilarious, and then adorable when the wolf and cat became tentative friends. The writing is good, other than a few typos and scenes with head hopping. I like Ms. Knight’s voice and look forward to reading more of her books. 4 Stars
Disclaimer I bought this book for my own enjoyment. I am not paid or compensated in any way, shape, or form for this honest review. I will not change or alter this review for any reason unless at my discretion.
And here I was afraid it was gonna be cheesy! Tells you not to judge a book by its cover or erm, name. I did make new cover for it though, just for kicks and giggles, I just felt it needed that something extra.
Now to the book!
The story begins with Baran making a time travel jump to Jane's 2005 to make sure serial killer who's stolen a jumpsuit is stopped from killing Jane Colby.
Baran is teamed with a giant wolf with voice manipulator allowing it the ability to speak, which is probably the best comic relief from an animal I've seen since Aisling Grey's demon Jim a newfie.
Jane returns from reporting on a savage killing for her small town newspaper to find a six foot four Viking of a man in her bedroom. A delicious "I'm here to save you - I don't believe you" ensues. Showing Jane's no run of the mill romance lead lady.
As the two battle things out, they try and catch the serial killer who keeps taunting them.
This book is filled with future, sci-fi and steamy scenes. It goes overboard in a fun readable way, the book is easy to finish in 24 hours.
To the depth of the characters, Baran has his issues but doesn't seem to lose control often, whereas Jane is tortured by the ghost of her father. I would have liked more on Jane's relationship with her father, and closer to the questions she bonders. But then again these characters don't linger too long after you finish reading.
It's a fun read, nothing too serious. So yeah, I'd recommend it for those days when you want to skip reality.

This sounded like the perfect book for me; time travel, warlord, computer enhanced wolf and it was, right up until the warlord muses about f##k7#@* the woman senseless until she is submissive and obedient to his every command. Really??? Now if she had taken out her tazer and zapped that smug look off his face, she would have been my kind of gal. The story is well written, the characters were well-defined, I liked the way the the bad guy was handled, but I probably would have gotten rid of the warlord the same way. The wolf is cool though. I wish the publisher would allow me to lend this out to someone that would like it, but no.
I really couldn't get into this book. I was skimming sections just to finish it. There is the handsome alpha male hero with his funny sidekick and of course the beautiful heroine who is in grave danger. This is the classic plot for so many books in this genre, but something was missing here. The story got bogged down with too many science fiction, futuristic information that wasn't helpful or interesting. I also didn't believe the hero and heroine had good chemistry. The best part of this book is the sidekick (Freika) who has a number of memorable quips.
This time-travel suspense and romance novel was a fun read, with some steamy sex (which did start to sound familiar after the second round or so, so Knight could introduce a little variety there) to take it out of the PG13-rating category. Don’t look for deep insights into the human condition here and you won’t be disappointed when you don’t find them.
I like this new series! Time travelers is a new world by Ms. Knight and I like it. Ms. Knight writes such hot alpha males who are sensitive too. In this new series, Jane is being targeted to be killed. The futuristic enforcing team is there to prevent her death. Erotic and sexy, Ms. Knight is the first one who led me down to the path of lovely smutty books.
Good book by Angela Knight. The sex was hot and that is always a plus. Barak has come back from the future to protect Jane from a serial killer that was also from the future. He is a Warlord or a genetically engineered warrior. This is a fun, fast read if you are looking for one.
3.5 stars: I liked this read - I'm not sure why I didn't really like it. It had all the ingredients complete with a HEA, but I just didn't really get 'into' it. Hmmm.
Jane works as a reporter in a smaller town when suddenly a larger than life Warlord claims he needs to protect her from a serial killer. Suspense, smutty fluff and time travel.
I am SO happy to have finally discovered a new author that writes exceptionally well. Angela Knight is one helluva fantastic writer! I've read her small anthology in Captive Dreams with Diane Whiteside, and I greatly enjoyed not just her storytelling, but her writing. Angela Knight has a way with words that so few understand, so I looked her up and purchased everything I could find (even her non-story resource books).
Jane's Warlord was NO exception. I LOVE the futurist components thrown into this story, and how well Angela explained all the upgrades that were hinted at in the anthology. She did a fantastic job detailing their use without extraneous and unnecessary information that would only serve to slow the reader down. Her use of wording was perfect.
I was extremely surprised to have stumbled across two typos near the end of the book, but as my understanding goes, no perfect author goes unblemished. I have NEVER found an author so perfect that they didn't have even ONE typo somewhere in their story. Strange how that is, but I've seriously never come across an author (Stephen King aside) who exhibited remarkable storytelling skill and prose, yet didn't harbor even one measly typo. I actually laughed when I saw it. It didn't throw me off, it didn't slow me down, and it wasn't even bad. I can't even tell you where I saw it. I just thought it was amusing, and a sure sign that Angela Knight is in fact a phenomenal writer.
That stray typo confirmed it.
Normally, lots of sex in a story makes the book seem gushy and boring. I've read fluff pieces that dragged on and on for the pure smut. Surprisingly, Angela placed the erotic scenes in with delicate care. They weren't carelessly thrown in half haphazardly. They weren't tossed in there just to add steamy heat to an already hot tale of two people. Each time Jane and Baran got it on, you felt the tension thicken like a cloying aroma of musk assailing your own nostrils. Instead of pushing myself through it just to see what happens after the two were done, I noticed the writing was new each time. Every detail, every sentence, and every use of action was a completely new form.
I have to say I was quite envious. I often find myself stewing over a fucking paragraph for half a day, trying to find words to write for one damn sentence that I haven't already used before. I wish I had this talent... dammit.
I believe the manner with how Angela wrote Baran's masculine personality was spot on. Being a warrior comes with certain traits, be it male or female. I've been associated with enough military in my life to know that the Warlord and Warfem's were perfectly crafted in their persona's, especially T'May's attention for Octopussy at the end. What woman doesn't seem drawn to a cat, no matter her tough exterior. I actually found myself smiling at that.
I also love how Angela correctly wrote police officers. Being married into law enforcement, it upsets me when people don't do their own research before deciding to write about a detective or a cop or whatever, and they create a character that completely stands against what protocol would allow for. What angers me more is when these characters then draw in crowds of gushing women who fawn all over them, wishing they'd find a guy (or girl) like that, while I'm over here like, "This isn't allowed to happen!!! They'd be fired in a heartbeat! IED would be on them! Why can't the author do their fucking research?!?!?! Why are you people so fucking stupid?!?!?!" (but then, they all loved 50 Shades of Gray, didn't they? ding ding ding! intelligent much?)
Finishing off this review, I'm super happy to have found not just a new book series (if there are more to the futuristic settings), but a new author I can stalk. I LOVE Angela Knight's writing. She isn't too descriptive, using JUST the right words to paint the perfect picture. She knows exactly how to show us the story without telling us the sky is blue and the clouds are white. I am thrilled to make room in my library for all of her books, because I certainly plan to get every single one of them.
Wasn’t too sure about this one, but it turned out to be an outstanding example of SF/Time Travel Erotic Romance. I haven’t been into smutty books much lately; I’m so glad I overrode my misgivings for this one! The pacing was spot on, the characters wonderfully developed. The hero, Baran, is an uber protective alpha warrior, his size and nature explained (!), right along with his post-adrenaline heightened sexuality. His emotional wounds are as deep as he is hot. Jane is smart and brave in spite of her issues. Baran’s partner is a talking wolf. Some good humor there, especially involving Jane’s cat. A chillingly evil and extremely dangerous villain and a by-the-book detective provide well-rounded additional roles. Though the somewhat casual editing troubled me a few times, especially at the beginning, the story was so well told, I got over it. And the ending! One of the best I’ve read in a long, long time in any genre. What a keeper! Too bad it looks like most of Ms. Knight’s books involve shape-shifters (don’t much care for that, especially in erotic reading material). Sigh. Really good SF romance (erotic or otherwise) is hard to find.
Yes, it's another time-travel romance. The time-travel plot is silly but when isn't it? The serial killer plot is worse than silly but that's not why you're reading this book. The romance is standard fare. Warrior Boy from the future travels back in time to save Newspaper Girl, they have the best sex like ever, and girl returns with boy to his own time (and planet--did I mention he's not from Earth?) and they live happily ever after. She gets to take her cat, too. Luckily, the universe doesn't break from the strain. If you like your heroes to be hyper-masculine, super-human sex machines, and you enjoy sex scenes featuring bondage without safe-words between total strangers, this might be just what you're looking for. How do I even rate something like this? One star because it was a quick read, especially since I skimmed the sex scenes.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Genetically altered jerkey hero, seemingly strong heroine, insta-lust/love ... all contribute to lost points ... with a few (that's "barely a few") recovered by the cleverly upgraded dangerous yet comedic sidekick. The book was published nearly 14 years ago, I don't know if that really gives an excuse for drawbacks. ... the time travel logic sorta works... and the story was a little better than OK.
I'll give this new-to-me author another chance Oops ... looking thru book descriptions, I realize I've read at least a couple a bunch more (most of her "mageverse") in fact. It was just pre-compooper, and therefore pre-goodreads, and my print books are lost in the move from MO to CA ... out of sight 8 yrs, out of mind ... I'd rate them ⭐️⭐️⭐️ to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ today, as they have all the "insta-issues" of "Jane's Warrior" too, as I remember.
This is a smart plot with fantastic time travel sci fi that I really enjoyed. The hero, Baran Arvid, comes from the future and is a genetically engineered Warlord with really cool technology and a timber wolf sidekick that has a computer chip that allows for communication. The heroine Jane is a newspaper owner and reporter and it seemed to have a ring of validity as she followed her cases. Which made sense when I read the author bio as she was a reporter for a career and her husband is a detective!
What really zings in this book is the chemistry between Baran and Jane. Baran is a fantastic Alpha male! I loved the way the sex scenes built between them. Read it just for the outdoors scene that happens about halfway through! A favorite I will bookmark!
One of my favorites so far this year and a definite new favorite author.
Perhaps I should have guessed from the cover and the title, but this one was a little over-the-top for my taste. I really enjoy creative and well-written paranormal romance, but this one was just a bit... much. My favorite parts focused on the side characters, who were wonderfully humorous and real, but the two main characters were just too much the stereotype of what we'd expect from MCs in this genre, so that they didn't feel particularly real. With the thin plotting and the insta-love added in, on top of some truly awkward dialogue and rushed pacing, I found myself glad to finish this one. It might be a light and humorous escape read for folks who love PNR, but I really needed more to enjoy it and I don't particularly expect to try the author again.
