Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom

Rate this book
Gypsy-Rose Blanchard discovered that her whole life was a lie. After eight-and-a-half years of incarceration, she can finally tell you the truth—with this exclusive collection of interview transcripts and journal entries, plus her own illustrations and photos.

While incarcerated for her role in her mother’s death, Gypsy saw her story told by others again and again in the media, from news reports and podcasts to TV series like The Act (Hulu). Now, granted early parole and preparing to start a new life, she’s free to speak directly to her supporters and the world.

Falsely told that she suffered from debilitating, chronic illnesses, Gypsy grew up enduring physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her mother Dee Dee, including unnecessary medication and surgery. But her desperate attempts to escape a lifetime of isolation led Gypsy into the grip of another abuser, ultimately resulting in her mother’s murder.

Released is Gypsy’s frank, unflinching, and deeply personal reflection on her past, present, and hoped-for future, and includes:

Exclusive interviews with Gypsy recorded during her time in prison
Gypsy’s contemplative writing on trust and betrayal, love and freedom, self-worth and identity, prison life, her marriage, and other personal issues
Personal photos, drawings, and other memories from years past

Created with writers Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani, Released is a declaration of Gypsy’s resolve to turn her pain into perseverance, take accountability for her actions, and help others escape the trap that circumscribed her life for so long.

"Freedom to me is never feeling like I have to conform myself to the demands of others to feel loved and seen. All of my life I had to conform to fit what others wanted me to be... For thirty-two years all I ever wanted is to be loved, to be me." Pg. 170

Like many others, I have followed this case since 2015, so I was very intrigued to dive into this book! I already watched and enjoyed her docuseries, and I liked how this book gave some additional information that was not mentioned in the TV show. This was mostly comprised of interviews between Gypsy-Rose and Melissa via phone call as she awaited her release, which is why I only rated this 3 stars. However, she said in the book that she is working on her full memoir which will be released later this year, and I will definitely be reading it once it comes out!

Like bajillions of other true crime addicts around the world, the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard is one that is like a trainwreck I couldn’t simply look away from. From Mommy Dead and Dearest to binging The Act to reading fictitious takes on Gypsy’s story in novels such as Darling Rose Gold, I have been hooked on this wilder than fiction tale of murder and Munchausen By Proxy for years now. When I saw a book was being released you bet your butt I was the first on the library waiting list. What I didn’t realize this was simply a sampler of around 100 pages otherwise known as . . . . .

These transcriptions of phone calls from the prison leave nearly all of the story left untold (and would have worked so much better as an audiobook than in hard copy). I 100% anxiously await Gypsy’s full memoir and want to hear her side straight from the horse’s mouth. I will say, the general reaction of “YAAAAAAS QUEEN by the public upon her release has been more than a little disconcerting to me. Yes, Gypsy-Rose was a victim, but are the same folks who seem to be offended by nearly everything really celebrating murder now? Odd. Also, her Peter Griffin looking husband skeeves me out to the max so it will be interesting to see if he is an opportunist. Let’s face it, Gypsy is an easy mark. She clearly suffers from a severe case of arrested development and dives right into relationships head first looking for her fairy tale. Or is it all an act? She certainly drops her bubbly persona and lets it be known she has some serious sour grapes off of others making money from her tale without her getting a cut (as explained in this book the public record is free for the taking). The one thing that is certain is she has fully embraced being front and center in the public eye and her millions of new followers on social media. Time will tell if there is to be more than 15 minutes of fame.

I've been following this case for a long time, so of course I had to read this.

I was a bit disappointed at how little new information was in it, but it's not a huge deal knowing we'll get a full memoir later this year. This is more like a teaser of what's to come, she's taking back her story and will finally be the one to tell it herself.

The reason I didn't immediately jump into this upon release (other than having to wait for my turn on Libby, ahem) is that I was holding out for an audiobook, but one doesn't seem to be coming?

The way this book is structured, the majority of it being phone calls with Melissa, makes it a prime candidate for an audio release. But I also get that it probably wasn't possible to get that done on top of everything, with her only being released at the end of December and this book coming out at the start of January.

Still I think it could be nice to have an audio version at some point in the future for a more immersive read. Her husband could even have a part in it with that nice accent of his.

I'm looking forward to the full memoir.

These are transcripts of conversations between Gypsy-Rose Blanchard and Melissa Moore (published by Michele Matrisciani) in the months leading up to Gypsy’s release from jail. In between the transcripts, which read like Melissa interviewing Gypsy, are her thoughts on each subject covered. It must feel so refreshing at least for her to tell everything in her own words. She is adamant she is being truthful here, despite what critics may think. There are also never-before-seen photographs from her life and letters she has penned.
Even the introduction written by Gypsy here was so hard-hitting, as she announces that she is writing a full memoir to come and this is an introductory book of sorts - she refers to it Gypsy’s Version - like Taylor Swift’s re-recorded albums, where Taylor took full ownership of her own music. That’s what Gypsy is doing with her story - reclaiming it because so many others have told it for her whilst she has been behind bars.
I don’t know how I feel about her coming out into the world as this huge celebrity and social media influencer. It feels like all eyes are on her and everyone needs to remember she is a highly traumatised woman who will still be processing everything she has been through.
Many people, myself included, have been intrigued since we first heard about Gypsy’s case. Was she the mastermind behind her Mother’s murder, using Nicholas Godejohn as a tool? Or is it deeper than that? Did Nicholas manipulate this damaged, traumatised girl? Or is it somewhere in the middle? There’s a lot of complicated, uncomfortable questions surrounding the death of Dee-Dee Blanchard. She put Gypsy through extreme levels of Munchausens-by-proxy abuse all her life. But it is known that Gypsy masterminded the whole plot to kill her Mother, even handing the knife over to Godejohn. It is clear she is haunted by regret on one hand, and on the other, she feels set free

Gypsy is now focusing on building a future for herself with her husband, Ryan, now that she has her freedom. One might say she has been a prisoner all her life, like how she was confined to a wheelchair for many years that she did not need to be in. How she was fed drugs that she did not need for many years.
I’m looking forward to the release of her up-coming full memoir, I do think it will be one of the best-selling life stories of all time!

If you’re like me and have been following this case since 2015, you’re going to wish you saved your $10. There wasn’t anything new or substantial that we haven’t already heard so I’d suggest waiting until her memoir comes out or watching her recent interviews/docuseries on Lifetime. You’ll gain more insight there.

I have a lot to say about this, because i did not feel good about it at first. i know in interviews she’s very bubbly and happy, but this writing really showed her being bubbly and it felt very weird. then i kept reading and it really seems like she cares about everything she’s saying, and she says all the right stuff and takes time to take accountability and talk about the crime and what exactly happened, and by the end of the book i really like her. then she started talking about like what she wants to do now, and how she would like to advocate and help people, and that’s when i started to really enjoy this book. she’ll have a longer one come out later in the year i will definitely take time to read it.

i do wanna say she’s an absolute girlboss for how her life is turning out now. she’s doing a lot of good and i respect the HELL out of it #slay

This entire book was based on a phone transcript.

Personal opinion here but I can tell it’s written as a quick way to gain financial status.

Parts of the book that weren’t a phone transcript was about Gypsy talking about her redemption from god and “selling herself as this new and renewed person.- felt like she was playing a character role rather than a “real person

I’ve got more information from watching her interview on TikTok and her own socials than what I did from this paid book.

Again I reiterate the religion aspect that was mostly what this story was about, the abuse Gypsy rose endured and the childhood she had was barely covered and didn’t even scratch the surface. I could get more information from google about what she had happen to her from her mother.

What confused me a lot to was the many diagnosis she said her mother had, obviously munchausons but there was apparently scitzophrenia and narcissism too.

I found a lot of inconsistency with this book too with how she stated her mother used to make her sleep in the same bed as her to bathing with her and then going on to say that her online boyfriend Nick sent her a dildo from Japan and she had to send him videos of her performing sexual acts with it?

She also mentioned in the book she used to dress up in her wig and put dentures in to send sexually explicit photos to men online. It seemed strange to me that she appeared to have this kind of online access to these sites and performed these acts when her mother wouldn’t let her out of her sight.

Another focus of the book seems to be very centered around her upcoming fame status post prison.

A one star review was very generous.

Phone conversations between Gypsy-Rose and journalist Melissa Moore, whose father, weirdly enough, is a serial killer (I will obvs be going down that rabbit hole soon). Anyway, this was the worst quality ebook I’ve ever read. I bet, in total, about 20 pages wouldn’t load. I just kept going as it was a page here and a page there. I got the gist. Still annoying. Looking forward to Gypsy’s actual memoir which she mentions here, but I can’t find a pub date yet.

This is more or less a conversation between two people. If I’d paid for the book I would have been disappointed however I lent it at the library so the reading was for free.

It wasn’t as bad as I expected however there is a lot of cringe worthy stuff.

Normally I don’t comment on the cases I read about but with this book I’ll make an exception.

Gypsy, to me seems very childish and I don’t believe she has healed her childhood trauma - it can take decades and therefore I find it worrisome she wants a child.

To me Melissa More came across like a journalist who only thought about getting a huge scoop - I actually found her somewhat manipulative.

Gipsy had an awful childhood however she will always be the girl who killed her mother by proxy.

As someone who has spent a lot of time following Gypsy-Rose’s case, educating myself on munchausen by proxy and as someone who takes mental health extremely serious, I found this book extremely interesting.

At just over 100 pages & packed full of phone conversations, this was an extremely quick read. I will say that if you are looking for a memoir from Gypsy, this is not it, but stay tuned for one later this year 👀

Instead, I would consider this to be more about Gypsy’s time in prison and how she was able to grow and feel free even behind bars. It has an interview style to it which I really enjoyed.

Overall, I think this one is definitely worth the read if you want to learn more about Gypsy and have spent any amount of time following her story!

4.5 ⭐️

**When rating a non-fiction/memoir, I try to rate on things other than the person’s story. Who am I to judge their feelings/ideas/etc. This rating is based off of the speed, flow and my overall take away.

this was a really great, quick read that served as an introduction to gypsy-rose’s upcoming memoir. in this book, you will find never-before-seen pictures and letters, as well as correspondence between gypsy and her friend & journalist, melissa.

this was a great sneak peek into what gypsy is really like, and not how the media has portrayed her all these years. each chapter focuses on a different aspect of her life that she has had to figure out for herself after being controlled by her mother for so long.

i found this a really interesting and compelling read! as someone who has kept up with gypsy and her case for many years, i was glad that i finally got to read something in her own words. there is a lot of new information revealed and discussed in this book, that even those who consider themselves very familiar with the case would not know. i can only imagine what kind of things she will tell us in her full memoir.

3.5 stars. This seemed to be slapped together pretty quickly and feels a little like a cash grab, but I can't say I blame her! $10 for just over 100 pages - a chunk of which is pictures and drawings, and a chunk is transcripts of calls between Gypsy-Rose and the co-authors. This is not her memoir, but a "prequel" to a forthcoming memoir. It did offer some insight and I wish her well. Just wish there was more here!

"I feel like I have been put through a lot of storms, and yet I am still not broken. I am not a broken person. I am worthy of being loved; I have never had that self-worth before. I am not damaged; I am safe."

read this in one sitting on a flight and holy crap i wanna give her the biggest hug! like many others, i had been aware of gypsy's story, and unfortunately did watch the show "the act" with joey king. i regret that now, knowing how much it messed with gypsy's emotional healing, and i can only imagine how completely fucked up it must be to have ANY piece of media made about ur life without ur consent, let alone a whole show with a list actors. this definitely made me realise we need to be more vigilant with the content we consume, and make sure it is done ethically.

gypsy has obviously been through a lot, but this book was such a nice little view into who she really is, or has become, since she first went to prison. she sounds like such a sweet, determined, and intelligent young woman, and it breaks my heart she had to basically grow up in prison and go through her girlhood in a place with violent people. despite all that, she has managed to build up her confidence and self-awareness, and can extend sympathy and give love to others. i found her story to be soooo inspiring and such a great example of the resilience of the human spirit. i just really love that she is so committed to helping others and being an activist for young people in abusive homes, all while continuing to thrive in her marriage and personal life.

i recommend this to everyone tbh! its a super short read and gypsy is so captivating. cant wait to see her build up her activist efforts and i will definitely be supporting!

3.5 stars but rounding down

this was a super short precursor to gypsy rose’s full memoir which will be released later this year, and it definitely did its job and convinced me to read the full memoir when released

I was super impressed with gypsy’s level of acceptance and acknowledgement in her role of the crime. she definitely isn’t hiding her part in her mom’s murder (I think it would be problematic if she did). she has also clearly had a lot of time to heal and look inward, but I do worry that she is underestimating how hard of an adjustment it will be to enter into newly married life with freedom she has never had, all under the public eye. not really my place to say though SO I guess we will see how it goes, I’m rooting for her.

also respect that she says the first thing she needs to do when she gets out of jail is find a therapist, because I imagine her bucket list is pretty long

excited to see what unfolds in the next chapter of her life, under “gypsy’s version this time (her words not mine but love that she’s a swiftie hehe)

As a child protection social worker who has worked with children and parents who have experienced Munchausen by proxy, I just knew I had to read this book!

This had me in tears. Gypsys story is so utterly heartbreaking and despite the significant and profound trauma and experiences she has been though she still is such a happy, bubbly, go lucky person who wants to change the world and this is so clear in her words. Gypsy takes so much accountability and does not place blame despite what she has been through but instead seeks to understand her childhood and mother better. I wish all the best for Gypsy because after an awful first 20 years of her life, she deserves all the happiness in the world. She also deserves to forgive herself.

A quote that really stood out for me;
"You give up your own needs and desires, and put the person’s interests in front of your own. In return, you expect a payment in the form of validation and acceptance. This kind of currency is dangerous because the cost is you."

A great prequel of sorts before her official memoir comes out (hopefully later this year).
Giving this a rating seems weird, but I would definitely recommend it. Especially if you know who she is and are curious to hear her side of what she experienced, and how she is growing, progressing, and processing the events of her life.

I’ve been following this case since before “The Act, and other various docuseries that came out about Gypsy. It’s always been fascinating, but I didn’t learn anything new about the case in this short book besides her relationship with her husband Ryan.

I felt that this book was a little unnecessary as a precursor to her upcoming and full length biography, this could have easily been just a video documentary instead of a written interview.

Gypsy’s life has been all over social media in the last few weeks, I hope she includes the impact of social media on her after the release, in her upcoming book.

Does this case interest me? Sure. I have my own opinions on things regarding this case; BUT I started watching the documentaries on televisions and basically this book is a short retelling of everything she has already said. Add in a few “never seen before photos and you can sell a book. Well I’m glad I didn’t buy it.

I’m sure some people will love this, but it was not for me.
