A bodyguard, she's-off-limits, he falls first, secret relationship romance
The gorgeous, brilliant woman I have dirty dreams about every damned night? She's my best friend's fiancée. She's supposed to be queen someday. She's off-limits.
But I can't walk away. I'm supposed to protect her. Maybe even be her friend.
I should not be lusting after her. And I absolutely cannot fall in love with her.
But I can’t forget that one spontaneous, stolen kiss. I can’t stop taking care of her. I can’t stop wanting her secrets. I can’t get over her smiles, her laughter, her happiness. I can’t get over her.
So, while my head knows she can’t be mine, my heart doesn't care. And if it comes down to choosing between her or everything…I won’t have to think twice.
Reluctantly Rogue is Jonah and Linnea's story. It is book two in the steamy modern royal romance series, Royals Gone Rogue. It is definitely best read after book one.
Erin Nicolle is the new pen name for NYT and USA Today Bestselling romance author Erin Nicholas. While Erin Nicholas is known for her blue-collar book boyfriends and big, boisterous found families in small towns, Erin Nicolle writes rich and royal rogues. But they both love a dirty talking cinnamon roll, a grump who is reluctantly wrapped around a feisty little finger, and a gruff, protective guy who falls first and hard.
I was so excited to head back to Cara, and could have screamed at when Torin made his appearance! I really enjoyed getting to know about Jonah and Linnea’s relationship, as it was teased throughout the first book, as Linnea was set to marry Torin and become Queen.
It did take me a little while to get into though; I think that’s because it had a bit of a slow start, given the flashbacks that gave us insight as to how they first met. I really did like their tender moments together, and how Jonah wanted for Linnea to find what makes her happy.
I really like the way the podcast chat is interwoven into the chapters, too.
Torin and Abigail remain my favourite couple though, I fear I’ll never get over how he built her a freaking farm, because he knew how much agriculture meant to her. Planted a field of lavender because she always smelt like it, and just had it so, so bad for her!
I can’t wait for Cian’s story!!

Once again, My ears had entirely too much fun listening a story written by Erin Nicolle! Seriously! Since I listened to the audiobook of the first book in this series not too long ago, Jonah and Linnea, were very fresh in my mind as characters. I didn’t know exactly in what direction their story would go, but I knew it would be an exhilarating & emotional ride! I was not mistaken! The emotion that this story invoked in me most was, well, laughter but also, I was content. It’s hard to explain, I think, except to say that the story wasn’t dramatic even though that’s a perfectly legitimate direction it could have taken based on the plot. It also wasn’t fluffy or unrealistic, rather it felt real and relatable. All you have to do is take the whole royal out of the equation and this journey could be yours or mine in another life. Realistic fiction; that’s where it’s at kids!
Just as its predecessor, Reluctantly Royal, this story had charm for days! It was witty and swoony and an overall joy to listen to for 12 hours! I never felt a minute of those hours. Yes, it took a couple day (possibly 4 lol) but it didn’t matter what point I was at in the story, I was entertained! I haven’t invested the proper time in reading/listening to this author’s alter ego, Erin Nicholas, and something tells me I’m missing out on some entertaining greatness, so I’ll be rectifying that this year!
پDz What a blast Jason Clarke & Melissa Moran were with their narrations! I mean the story itself is entertaining and when you add two very talented narrators into the mix, it's a "party like it's 1999" in your ears!! LOL
I’m looking forward to Prince Cian’s story next. It’s gonna be a heck of a ride! I feel it!
Put Erin Nicolle on your radar if you like romantic comedies with a whole lot of charm, wit, and humor! You’ll thank me if you do! :)
💭I have been waiting for Jonah & Linnea’s story since . This book serves more like a prequel, as the timeline started before the first book begins. As Torin returns to Cara to assume his role to be the future King, Jonah comes with him and meets Linnea, Torin’s fiance. While she and Torin are not interested in each other, she’s still off-limits and way too good for him (in his opinion).
They formed a friendship, while slowly fighting their attraction. There are also some “Teach Me/FWB moments between them until they finally able to admit their feelings. Linnea is definitely the highlight of this book, I just love her character so much. She was born to be Queen, and her reaction at the end was pure GOLD! You go girl! If you're into royal romance with sizzling chemistry, this book is a must-read!
🎧𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄🎧 Jason and Melissa deliver an amazing duet-style narration that truly brings the story to life. Jason's deep, sexy voice never disappoints—it's captivating every time. His brief appearance as Torin, complete with an irresistible Irish accent, left me wanting more! Melissa does a fantastic job complementing him, matching his energy and style perfectly. Their chemistry is palpable, making every scene engaging. Jason can do no wrong in my book, and together, they’re an unbeatable duo!
⚠️𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐤⚠️ - OM drama (he’s basically coaching her to date other men, there’s a kiss with OM)
OMG this book is soooooo good! I LOVE Jonah and Linnea together. He’s a hot growly teddy bear and I loved how he encouraged Linnea to find what makes her happy. Certain scenes were beyond HOT! I didn’t want to put the book down and am so sad it’s over! Can’t wait for the next one in the series, it’s gonna be great if the ending of this one is any indication!!
I loved, loved this swoony and heartwarming opposites attract, virgin, bodyguard/soon-to-be queen, sort of engaged to his best friend, dirty talking, forbidden romance. It was pages and pages of all the best words and the biggest feels. It’s a love story that reminds you that romantic gestures can be anything - even a glass of water. And while the book is funny and swoony and spicy, it is also a deeply emotional book about the power of choice. Jonah is the best friend and bodyguard to Crown Prince Torin of Cara. Duchess Linnea has been told she’s supposed to marry the prince of Cara since she was 4 years old. The only problem is Torin and Linnea have no desire to marry each other and, of course, there is also the issue of Jonah being in love with Linnea. During the story I fell in love with both characters individually and then fell more in love with them together. Linnea is portrayed as this perfect mix of worldly but naive and Jonah is the world’s biggest bodyguard cinnamon roll. They are so good together and the push pull of will they, won’t they was delicious perfection. And the bodyguard texts? I was loving those. The journey to their rogue HEA included sweet moments, dirty talking spice, laughs, supportive friends, messy families, loyalty, honor, baggage unpacking, changes of heart, missteps, and all the heart squeezing love. While this book can be read as a standalone, part of the story parallels Reluctantly Royal so to get the most enjoyment out of this book, the series should be read in order. I will be eagerly anticipating the next book in this series and probably rereading the first two books while I wait.
*ALC review* 4.5 stars. This sequel was EVERYTHING!! I fell hard for Jonah and Linnea in Reluctantly Royal, so I loved getting to take a look at how they got to where they were in the 1st book, as well as where they ended up in the end. This book gave everything: happiness, angst, jealousy, passion, SPICE, and so much love. I found it hard to stop listening because I didn't want it to end! This series and these characters are so well done that it is easy to get enamored, and I loved every moment. Jason Clarke is back, and showcasing all of his talent, seamlessly switching between Jonah's American accent and Torin's accent (a Scottish/Irish blend), and even the British accent of one of the side characters! Melissa Moran was amazing as Linnea, bringing passion and just enough innocence to the character and her experiences. I was so happy throughout this story, and I'm not ready to leave the world of Cara behind!
Reluctantly Rogue is a great entry into Erin Nicolle/Erin Nicholas's Royals Gone Rogue series. I really enjoyed the first book in the series and this one is just as good if not better.
Erin does such an excellent job of making Jonah and Linnea interesting characters you want to see together. The dual POV was great as you really get to see the pining and chemistry and attraction between them as they navigate a really unique and difficult road to being together.
The writing is engaging with lots of sweet and swoony moments as well as ones that will make you literally laugh out loud. This story is one of my favorites that Erin has written. I was hooked from the very first chapter and did not want to put it down. I'm already looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
I love forbidden bodyguard romances, and this book is no different! I’m loving this series so far, and also how this book was set alongside the first book in the series! I love how it caught up to the current timeline as well. Linnea and Jonah have great chemistry, but it’s their freindship that makes this story!
Jonah and Linnea have chemistry and more! I absolutely loved the way this book revisited events in Reluctantly Royal from another perspective and shared the development of Jonah and Linnea’s relationship. Jonah has a gift for details and that makes him so much more than a bodyguard for Torin and Linnea. After a lifetime of having her life decided for her, Jonah finally sees Linnea for herself.
I don’t want to give away too much, but I encourage you to read not just this book but this whole series, you will not be disappointed!
As always, Erin Nicholas aka Erin Nicolle writes a great and hot story. This story was made even better because there were so many emotions, live and care in Linnea and Jonah’s story. I’m looking forward to Cian finding his Cinderella in the next book!
This is one of those books that you want to race through yet savour at the same time. Big, bad bodyguard Jonah and regal, classy Linnea combust to form big, sweet Jonah and sassy, sexy Linnea. It’s hot, it’s sweet and it will make you realise that we could all do with a Jonah in our lives, noticing what we like and need and doing their best to look after us.
Jonah Green is bodyguard of Prince Torin, of the small island of Cara, and his best friend. Duchess Linnea Olsen of Cara is currently secretly betrothed to the Prince, not that either is interested in the other. And while all this royal drama occurs, real love is blooming between unexpected characters and it's sassy, sexy and seriously steadfast. It is a fun ride filled with second guessing, brilliant ideas and overcoming unrealistic expectations. Very charming personalities wth delightful use of texting, blogging and old fashioned dialogue. Excellent work, Ms. Nicolle, in creating a charming world of love and romance.
Whew! The up and down in emotions for these characters went all the way to the very end. But their attraction was palpable and the love wraps around your heart and the steam…Scorching! Over the top in the best way and it’s a stellar follow up to Reluctantly Royal—Torin and Abi’s story.
Reluctantly Rogue is a forbidden royal, bodyguard romance. We got to see part of Linnea and Jonah’s romance in the first book of the series and it was great to go back and see how it all started. I loved that these too developed a friendship with each other that turned into much more. I loved seeing the tension between them as they tried to resist each other until they just couldn’t. These two had an undeniable chemistry and I loved every moment of their romance.
Melissa Moran and Jason Clarke narrate this book in duet. They did an amazing job at showcasing the emotions and passion between their characters. I loved hearing these two bring to life Linnea and Jonah. Thank you to Erin and HomeCooked Books for an early listen!
5 Star Review Reluctantly Rogue (Royals Gone Rogue #2) by Erin Nicolle
Audio/eBook:
Having read the first book in the series from Erin Nicolle I couldn’t wait to read Reluctantly Rogue. From the first chapter I was invested in the story that Ms. Nicolle wove about bodyguard Jonah and Linnea whom we met in the first book. Parts of this book run parallel to book one so I suggest you read that book first. These two could not be more different and yet as a couple they worked well together. The story was well paced, the characters engaging and there was a good balance of romance and humour and some angst.
The narration by Jason Clarke and Melissa Moran was spot on. They brought the characters and story to life for me. Their voices were easy to listen to and did justice to the story that Ms. Nicolle wove.
I was happy to be back in Cara and get a little more background conversation from when our past favorite, Torin, was looking for his girl Abigail from Reluctantly Royal Book 1 in the Royals Gone Rogue series. Book 2, takes place during the same time as the last one as we go on a journey to stop the wedding of Torin and Linnea as Jonah (Torin’s Bodyguard and Best Friend) realizes his feelings are too deep to let her marry anyone but him. I love an arraigned marriage trope and this one was done with a twist, where they are actively trying to stop the arraignment and be able to live a life of love and passion rather than obligation, it was fun, sexy and had me hooked on how the story would end, wondering who was marrying who. Narrated in duet by Melissa Moran and Jason Clarke, Melissa’s voice was captivating and mature, she truly made me understand who Linnea was as a person and not only was she the rule follower or the one who had a lot of say in Cara, she was brave, thoughtful and when it was her time to break the walls down to go after what SHE wanted in life, she did just that and I loved the way Melissa’s voice was able to bring out those emotions for her character. Jason Clarke as Jonah was perfection, he was protective, a tad bit grumpy but he spoke the truth and had a very caring side that when Jason voiced it made you fall even harder for him. The spice was also a major plus and I loved when Jason brought out Jonah’s dominant side. I enjoyed the way Jason could give us Jonah’s true self through his voice and make us understand his feelings not only towards being the bodyguard everyone relies on but the friend he truly was to Torin and Linnea. If you love a bodyguard romance with a bit of a love triangle (not together romantically) a secret romance, and incredible narrators, listen to Reluctantly Rogue book 2 in the Royals Gone Rogue series by Erin Nicolle.
Thank you home cooked books for the opportunity to listen and review.
Love this series and this book is a fantastic addition. There are so many amazing tropes - royal, secret romance, opposites attract and bodyguard.
Jonah is a dedicated man, friend and employee to the palace. He does not want to cross the line with Linnea but he cannot keep his feelings a secret any longer.
Linnea is destined to be Queen..a role she is determined to have. However, her lack of love for the future King is a big road bump. Her love for another man - Jonah - is proving to be challenging.
Jonah and Linnea and such an amazing couple who are willing to do anything to be together..even if that means disappointing others…their love is so strong. They have amazing banter, secret adventures and passion.
Enjoyed having the characters from the first book make a cameo and recount some do the events in book one. I love how a Linnea stood up for herself and made it clear what she has decided her future will be. Jonah’s love for Linnea is so strong, beautiful and unending. A fun and fantastic read/listen! Looking forward to the other books in the series!
Updated 8/9/24 Jason Clarke and Melissa Moran deliver an amazing performance! They each give perfect personality, voice and emotion to each of the characters. I love how narrators bring a whole new experience to enjoying an authors words! Thank you Home Cooked Books for the complimentary copy.
I’m going to be honest, I started eyeball reading this book about a month ago. I made it about three-quarters of the way through, went on vacation, and then got bogged down on deadlines for ARCs/ALCs. Since this was a book I wanted to read, rather than had to (at the time!), it took me way longer to finish than it should have! Part of me waited because I also knew that the audiobook was coming out and I NEEDED Jason Clarke to read it to me 😂🤷🏽♀ But I also requested the ALC because I FELL IN LOVE with book one, and I hoped to get the ALC for this book! I’m so thankful that HomeCookedBooks sent me this to review! I’m absolutely loving this series and I hope that everyone takes a chance on it!
This is Jonah and Linnea’s story and is set mostly before Torin and Abigail get together. You definitely need to read Reluctantly Royal first even though you know that Jonah and Linnea end up together, so don’t go rogue 😏. The last part of this book is when Torin and Abi finally get together, so if you haven’t read ‘Royal yet, then it would feel rushed because it’s more of a summary of what we already read. But reading it as the second book gives you a refresher and adds some insight from Jonah and Linnea’s perspective. Plus you find out what happens after the royal couple gets married, what goes down with the King, and it’s a bit of a shocker!
This book has a a lot of self discovery and support in it. Linnea takes a chance to finally do what she wants to do and not what’s expected of her. And though he fights it (for a while at least lol), Jonah is who she wants. He helps her by supporting her wants, needs, and desires. And let me tell you, it is a fun journey to be on with them!
I really enjoyed reading about how our rogue couple got together. The tension and chemistry between the two is so good it jumps off the page! Jonah is a walking green flag. Like SWOON. Ahhh. He is one of those unicorn men that women wish they could find: they command a room, pay attention to details, do the little things for you, and are AMAZING in bed. So yeah. BIG FAN of Jonah 😅. Linnea is a straight up Girl Boss. She has so many expectations from so many people and meets each and every one of them, to perfection. At the same time, she is inexperienced in just one area. The only area just happens to be one that Jonah can show her a thing or two about… Pair those two characters with our narrator duo and prepare yourself for an amazing read! 🩷
Jonah has some of the BEST dirty talk I’ve read in a while, that combined with Jason Clarke’s gruff voice and perfect narration?? Dead. On the floor. Keeled over from swooning so hard. Clarke has the growliest voice that I just can’t get enough of. My gosh. And all of his accents for the different characters!? Mind-boggling excellence.
Melissa Moran is a new to me narrator. She has an easy to listen to voice that fit with Linnea’s character. Moran is one that listeners will want to look out for and pick up her audiobooks, she paired well with Clarke.
I’m definitely looking forward to Cian’s story! I really am loving this series, especially with the narration. I hope everyone reads/listens 💜🩷
🎳 “I’m sure that my best friend has no idea I’m in love with his fiancée. 🎳 “You’ve never been touched the way I would touch you. 🎳 “Give it to me Duchess. Give it all to me. It’s mine. Reluctantly Rogue Royals Gone Rogue, Book 2 By: Erin Nicolle Narrated by: Jason Clarke, Melissa Moran
Erin Nicole pens another fabulous romance novel set in her “Royals Gone Rogue series, an off-limits romance between a bodyguard and his charge, and it is not your typical bodyguard romance, it is so much more. This book is a companion novel to the first book, “Reluctantly Royal, a not to be missed story, and it is beneficial to enjoy that book before this one. The first book is Prince Torin O’Grady’s story, the future king of Cara, who was promised to his grandfather’s best friend’s granddaughter, Linnea Olsen, except he is not in love with her and he is interested in someone else. Jonah is Prince Torin’s bodyguard and best friend, and he was in love with Linnea, who is completely off limits and he knows it. With Torin concocting a plan to get out of the arranged marriage, he finds a suitable solution, to find another man for Linnea, once she could fall in love with and advance her career. Linnea wanted to become the queen and had plans for Cara, but she did not want Torin, though, and thought she was better suited to run the country than he was, since he is always traveling out of the country. So he sets her up on dates in the states and has Jonah accompany her there and to keep her safe. Linnea and Jonah have become friends over the years, and she soon learns he knows more about her than anyone, claiming it is his job to know. And one accidental kiss has her wanting more from him, but he pulls away from her after that. There was an undeniable chemistry between them, and they could only deny each other for so long. These two together were everything, not only great together, but for each other because they really got each other, and Jonah was absolutely amazing, always thinking of her first. There are lots of layers to this story and I loved how it all played out, the drama, charm, heartfelt emotions, and steamy romance. The writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. Erin Nicole, thank you for another fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.
🎧📚🎧 Jason Clarke and Melissa Moran did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying, giving each a voice that was fitting and was believable in every role.Clarke as Jonah was perfection, grasping every aspect of his personality, from his protectiveness to his swoon worthy side. Moran was just as amazing as Linnea, showcasing her all aspects of her personality as well, from her insecurities to her strengths. Both were fabulous performing the roles of the secondary characters, too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters emotions and had you feeling them all. These two are entertaining storytellers and their performance elevates the already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another wonderful listen.
A great FMC, and a top notch Jason Clarke performance
Story: 3.75 ⭐️s Narration: 4.5 ⭐️s
Erin Nicolle’s second book in her Royals Gone Rogue series centers Jonah Greene (Prince Torin’s bodyguard) and Linnea Olsen (the woman lots of people hoped Torin would marry). Since book one already showed Linnea and Jonah together, there weren’t too many surprises, but it was interesting to see their relationship unfold. At first I didn’t understand why their story wasn’t book one, but in the last few chapters the ‘why becomes clearer. And while I enjoyed book one more, this was still an entertaining story overall.
I liked Linnea a lot. Her struggle between being someone who has always done what was expected and following her heart made for some excellent character growth. She was confident in her abilities and determined in her goals, but she wasn’t one to put her own needs first or balance those with family or royal exceptions. So the scene where she finally stands up for herself was fantastic when it came, even if the ending of the story felt a bit rushed afterwards.
I have to be honest about Jonah though - I wasn’t really a fan. While Imlove his friendship with Torin and how in love with Linnea he is, he’s just a little too caveman for me. And while the physical attraction between he and Linnea was off the charts hot, this was another case (as in book one) where it often seemed like there was more physically intimacy than emotional intimacy in their relationship. Maybe this is because I find the “she’s never been touched trope a bit icky, so all his obsessing over being the only one to touch her was a bit much for me. Still, I loved to enthusiastic consent rep in this book, and that Jonah was all for helping Linnea explore what she liked and didn’t; that was fantastic!
The audiobook was done well. Jason Clarke was absolutely the best part of my listening experience. His performance was as pitch perfect here as it was in book one. I also love that EN is having these books performed in duet; that definitely adds to listener enjoyment and immersion. Unfortunately, I was less engaged by Melissa Moran’s performance as Linnea. It was fine, I simply found it a little one note. Because I like Linnea so much as a character, I hoped for a more dynamic narrator performance. Still, it’s a fine listen and I’m definitely excited for book 3!
I received an ALC copy of the audiobook via Home Cooked Books and read via KU. All opinions are my own.
Jonah Greene is the best friend and protector of the crown Prince of Cara, Torin O'Grady. His job is to protect Torin and the crown. That job has been nearly impossible by the addition of the arranged engagement of the Lady Linnea Olson, who was promised at the age of 4 to be the Queen one day of her beloved country. Linnea has always done what is expected, planned her life to be married to an O'Grady, though the name has changed thru the years as the expected crown princes all abdicated their titles and moved to the US. Torin is the one who returns to claim the title of King when his grandfather health becomes frail. Along with Torin comes his body guard, companion, best friend, brother in all things but blood, Jonah Greene and after their first unexpected meeting, Linnea and Jonah become friends. But for Jonah it's much more and he is having thoughts and feelings for the Duchess that he shouldn't have since he is 'engaged' to his best friend.
Linnea fights her feelings but Jonah becomes her best friend too, the one person she confides everything in and when Torin comes up with a crazy plan to make Linnea fall in love with someone else so they can cancel this fake upcoming engagement he sends her to the US with his trusted friend to keep watch over her. But Jonah can no longer fight his own feelings for his Duchess and no longer holds it in. He puts it all out there and will accept whatever consequences comes his way included leaving the man he considers a brother to have it all with Linnea.
Linnea decides it's time to fight for what SHE wants and stop letting everyone dictate her life. Since she was 4 she's been doing what everyone else says, plans to marry multiple men due to them changing their minds all in the name of her country. She decides what's best for her is to let it all go and follow her heart with the one man who puts HER first and makes her feel things no other ever has.
This steamy love story will make you root for these two and for the future you know they can have but also for the Prince to find the woman of his dreams. This series of the Royals is quickly becoming on of my favs and I am in love with this couple and you will be too! Great way to kick off the summer reading season you won't be disappointed with Jonah and Linnea, you will fall in love!!!
Duet narration Steamy Bodyguard Forbidden romance He falls first Secret relationship
📚Story review📚 I absolutely loved Jonah and Linnea’s story! Jonah is the quintessential broody and gruff bodyguard with a filthy mouth, while Linnea is the picture-perfect duchess, promised to the prince and groomed her entire life to take her place one day as queen. The tension between duty and desire is palpable as she and the prince struggle with the reality of a loveless marriage that might be best for their country, but would totally crush their spirits.
The pining and chemistry between Jonah and Linnea is totally off the charts. Every forbidden stolen kiss is loaded with emotion, and when Jonah finally snaps, the spice level shoots through the roof—hotter than a sauna! Jonah’s role as a "teacher" was both sweet and scorching, as he went out of his way to ensure that Linnea had choices, even when it broke his heart. The way he balances his protective instincts with his deep feelings for her made for some truly unforgettable moments.
I also enjoyed how the story gives us a glimpse of Torin and Abigail's timeline from a different perspective. It added an extra layer of depth and connection to the broader story world, making the experience even richer.
If you’re a fan of intense chemistry, emotional depth, and a touch of royalty, this book is a must-read. Jonah and Linnea’s journey is as sweet as it is sizzling, and it left me thoroughly satisfied.
🎧❤️ Audiobook review ❤️🎧 Michelle was a new-to-me narrator, and I thought she was brilliant! She perfectly captured Linnea’s diplomatic and regal persona with great pacing and inflection. I loved Jason’s broody and protective portrayal of Jonah—he absolutely crushed the accent work. Breathy Jason is perfection; I can never get enough! Very much recommend this audio!
Thank you HCB and Erin Nicolle for this advanced listen!
**These are my own honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.
Overall Thoughts: This was a different kind of royal book than I’m used to reading. Usually, the FMC doesn’t want to get married or be royal, and while Linnea doesn’t necessarily want to get married, especially to Torin, but she does want to be queen. Linnea is strong and independent and doesn’t take any crap from the prince or his handsome friend and head of security, Jonah. Voiced by the perfectly growly voice of Jason Clarke, he is able to bring the somewhat grumpy bodyguard to life, and pit him against the prim and proper duchess narrated by Melissa Moran. This strange not-quite love triangle gets interesting when the day to announce Torin and Linnea’s engagement gets closer and closer.
Narration: Duet narration, first person, present tense, multi POVs some flashbacks
Tropes: enemies to lovers, defiant FMC, royals, arranged marriage, age gap, sense of duty,
Imagine growing up your whole life, being told by your grandfather that he made a deal with his friend during a poker game to have his granddaughter marry his best friend’s grandson, and by doing that she would one day become queen. Linnea was able to take that pressure and funnel her energy into being the best future queen. Focused on what would be best for Cara, the tiny island country, while her would-be husband jets off to America for a decade.
When Torin returns, he is trying to prove himself to the current king, hoping he’ll see he is ready to take over, but with the perfect Linnea overshadowing him, he becomes irritated and resentful. Jonah, his longtime best friend and head of security, meets Linnea in a comical way, and one she isn’t likely to forget…ever.
As the two circle around each other, Jonah feels the guilt of developing feelings for his friend’s future fiancé, even though Torin has no romantic feelings for Linnea. When it comes to the choices afforded to the royals, and the sense of duty they have for their country, how is a bodyguard supposed to win the heart of the woman he loves, when she is promised to another man, a man who can make her a queen?
4.5 Stars! I’m a simple girl, you tell me this is a forbidden bodyguard romance, and I am there! 🍾
I’ve really become obsessed with Erin Nicholas/Erin Nicolle’s books and this one was no exception! Ever since I first read the first book in this series, I have been excited to get to know and get into Jonah and Linnea’s love story.
So, here’s the low down on this book. Reluctantly Rogue is book 2 in the Royals Gone Rogue series. This is a forbidden, bodyguard romance with elements of royalty. In this book, we meet our MCs, Jonah and Linnea. Jonah is the official bodyguard of Torin O’Grady, the crown Prince of the fictional island of Cara and next in line to become King. Linnea is engaged to Torin and will become Queen when Torin is crowned King. They initially meet under these circumstances, and Torin becomes Linnea’s unofficial bodyguard. They instantly find themselves attracted to each other and are now in each other’s lives, due to the aforementioned engagement. This engagement also makes their attraction to each other forbidden, and they cannot do anything about this mutual attraction. Instead, they slowly become friends and this turns into more. They try so hard to fight against their feelings for each other but cannot seem to get each other out of their heads. So much is at stake, as Jonah is at risk of being banned from Cara if he pursues this relationship and Linnea also fights against her feelings as she needs to become Queen in order to implement her plans for Cara.
This book was soo good. Just like the first one in the series, I was hooked from page 1. They were such opposites, yet worked well together. I could definitely feel the tension and attraction. 🥵 Overall, it was charming, fun, witty and steamy with some angst thrown in. Although this is a standalone, parts of this book run parallel to book 1 so I highly suggest you read that book first.
If you’re looking for an angsty, forbidden, bodyguard romance, consider picking this one up, you won’t be disappointed.
Narrated by the brilliant Jason Clarke, and new to me (I think) narrator, Melissa Moran. Both did so well in this. Clarke portrayed the broody, stoic, and protective aura that Jonah exuded. Meanwhile, Moran excelled at showing the confident, strong, yet soft personality that Linnea had. This story was entertaining, but their narration added to that entertainment, and they brought the characters and their story to life.
Thanks to the author, Erin Nicolle, and the team at HomeCooked Books for providing me with an advanced audio review copy of this book. All opinions provided in this review are entirely my own.
Author Erin Nicolle (aka Erin Nicholas) writes the absolute swooniest, supportive, and seductive men and the most satisfyingly smart, savvy, strong, and sweet women.
Friends to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. In Reluctantly Rogue, Book 2 of her Royals Gone Rogue series, Nicolle writes an emotionally intricate, believable, and heartwarming story about a heroine who was groomed from a very young age to be a queen, to lead, to innovate, and to shoulder the burdens of an entire nation alongside her king.
The problem? Her intended future "king," Prince Torin, is in love with someone else and neither Torin nor Linnea want to marry each other, despite the machinations of their respective grandfathers.
Enter Jonah, Prince Torin's long-time bodyguard and best friend. Jonah is Linnea's biggest fan, especially when it comes to her freedom to choose her own path and her own partner, even as his deepest desire is that she would choose him.
Melissa Moran and Jason Clarke had me giggling, gasping out loud, and teary-eyed with their delicious duet-style performances as Linnea and Jonah.
Moran is delightful as confident, capable, determined Linnea. Moran's portrayal of a Linnea who knows what is expected of her and is entirely focused on meeting those expectations is beautifully contrasted with her performance as a Linnea awakening to her own wants and needs under the "tutelage" of a protective, observant, and kind but experienced Jonah.
Clarke is one of my favorite masc voice actors/narrators. His range as an actor is incredible and his portrayal of Jonah as Linnea's champion, confidant, and lover in this book makes it a desert isle keeper for me.
Both voice actors take Nicolle's unique and refreshing storytelling to the next level.
I am eagerly awaiting the book and audio for Book 3 in this series, Rags to Royals.
I wanted a twisted games 2.0 SO BAD and I was excited because this seemed similar enough but without it being the same. and I was so disappointed because this book was just not there. sadly this book did not even sniff the amazingness of twisted games. this book was too long. It should have been at LEAST 100 pages shorter. There was just a lot of unnecessary scenes that didn’t even establish more of an emotional connection between the two main characters. I thought the side characters were dull and the plot was not great either. I wanted something like the Rhys and Bridget against the world thing where they didn’t care what stood in their way and this was a “the king doesn’t care that we’re in love idk what to do other than keep it on the low the structure of this book was strange. You start this book, literally on page like 5, with both characters “in love with eachother. I was like eh okay weird but whatever. but oddly enough THEYRE NOT SPEAKING TO EACHOTHER AT THE TIME⁉️ you then backtrack and get their whole history. cute whatever, i was glad i got the “look from the present and that you get a quicker recap of how they got there because it wasn’t very interesting. but then we go back (fast forward?) to the present and they’re having issues. *cue twisted games tropes but not done as well* the couple is TOGETHER with 200+ pages left and I swear NOTHING happens to advance the plot until the last 40 pages. I think I just wasn’t feeling it between the two main characters. If that makes sense. it was also very physical and lacking the connection of true friendship and conversation. Istg no one can write characters who are actually in love anymore. so if you’re looking for another twisted games-ish book. do not waste your time with this one🧍♀
I’ve been looking forward to Jonah & Linnea’s book for ages!! As ever, Erin did not disappoint.
Jonah has been a steady, reliable guard and friend to Torin for years and I’m glad he finally got his happy! 🥰
Reading Reluctantly Royal I wasn’t quite sure how things were gonna go between our MCs and while there is definite crossover between books 1 & 2, this story stayed with our couple for the most part. Must admit, I’m now very intrigued about who the big boss is and who each of the bodyguards is gonna end up with.. 🤔🤔🤔
I felt Jonah’s vexation when it came to how he felt about Linnea and what he should do. He cared so much for her but given all she’d been through, the uncertainty around her future and how things stood with regards to Torin I understood why he didn’t want to hold her back and wanted her to see if there was something or someone else out there for her, even if it destroyed him in the process.
Linnea’s character for her part just grew and blossomed. Once she knew what she wanted there was no stopping her. I really like how she helped and encouraged Torin when it came to proving himself to his grandfather but I just loved how she was once she knew how she felt about Jonah. How she teased him and drove him to distraction was fun! I especially enjoyed when she finally decided to stand up for herself!! IYKYK. 😉😉😉
The relationship Jonah has with the other bodyguards showed why they felt like family. I’m really intrigued now about Linnea’s sister Astrid and her friend/PT - I think there could definitely be more going on there and I hope we find out in a future book.
All in all, Reluctantly Rogue was another fun instalment in the Royals Gone Rogue series and after some little teases at the end of the book I’m now impatiently waiting for Cian’s book and more about his mystery woman!!!! 😁😁😁
Book 2 in the series it can be read alone however the timeline overlaps with book 1 and made me very happy to puzzle out how it all fit together.
Jonah and Linnea are so star crossed at the beginning of this. She's been betrothed/promised to someone since she was a child and groomed to be the future queen once wed to the crown prince. But no one ever asked her what she wanted.
Jonah knew he couldn't have her. But he wanted her, so he cared for her and that made me swoon. He wanted to help his best friend who didn't want to marry her, help her be happy and in love but not with him, he wasn't worthy... but he was exactly what she needed.
The battle between duty and heart, between love and loyalty was such a tightrope for these two. It was a great story and I look forward to seeing more of them in future books for this family.
The audiobook was narrated in Duet style by Melissa Moran & Jason Clarke. They both did an amazing job with this one. Melissa is a new to me narrator and I loved the richness in her performance. I could really feel her emotional battle for self freedom. To follow her heart and be a little selfish over her happiness. Jason voiced the previous book of the series so that continuity of voice for Jonah and Torren was delicious for the ears (Irish accented Jason is always a treat). I love the way he brought out Jonah's protectiveness and the internal battle for wanting her, self awareness to try and not because he didn't feel worthy of her. I just wanted to hug him at times because he was so selfless giving up his potential for happiness...
I requested and was provided with an advanced copy of the audiobook. These are my honest opinions.
