First date number forty-eight comes to a screeching halt for detective Langley Sheppard when his date lifts a pack of gum from the local convenience store. But things start looking up when he encounters spunky damsel in distress Jessica Vickers, who's stranded in the store parking lot. Now Lang is about to discover that on a night when everything goes wrong, falling for Jessica feels spectacularly right.
By day, Maggie Wells is buried in spreadsheets, but at night she pens tales of people tangling sheets or tangled up in intrigue. The product of a charming rogue and a shameless flirt, this mild-mannered married lady has a naughty streak a mile wide.

Yay! My favourite naughty author, Maggie Wells had a newly published story, The Last First Date.
Have you ever just dashed to the store wearing your old yoga pants, no makeup, perhaps even a hat to cover your messy hair and then worry you may run into an old boyfriend or someone you know? Well that's what happened to Jessica except she was wearing track pants and a puffy hot pink coat with a broken zipper. Just a quick jaunt to the store for your chip fix and presto there is a heartthrob, Langley. Of course Langley is wearing a suit and dress shoes and looks good enough to lick. I felt for Jessica. The last person you'd want to run into is a hottie like Langley when you feel you look your worst and miserable sleety weather is blowing all around . To top it all off, Jessica just discovered that her car is broken down. Regardless, the chemistry between the pair was still there.
I loved how the story moved forward from their first encounter. A series of entertaining events finally gets them inside Jessica's house where the freezing New Year's Eve temp outside is quickly forgotten.
Langley is a stand up guy and Jessica is highly likeable. Erotic authors like Maggie Wells impress me with their ability to write steamy sex scenes when a couple barely knows each other. I mean, does that happen in real life? (Well, not in my circle anyhow) Yet, Langley and Jessica having hot lustful sex comes across as totally believable. They connected. They aren't slutty. In fact, they seem very ordinary with Langley loving his grandma and Jessica was wearing shoes with holes in them.
One of the things that draws me to Maggie Wells' stories is how she writes the couple's banter and their conversations. There is always underlying humour but not laugh out loud forced humour. Even during sex there is conversation. Her protagonists are so likeable. I was once again treated to this banter in The Last First Date.
I wish it didn't end so quickly for Lang and Jessica. I'd love to read more about their story and future. As usual, I just want more of Maggie Wells' story.
Teasers: premixed margaritas and nacho cheese flavoured chips, scarf on doorknob, officer interruption
The Last First Date was a great romantic comedy by one of my favorite authors. Ms. Wells has never disappointed me seeing as her specialty is writing short, sexy romances with characters who act maturely, confident, funny and utterly lovable. If that’s what you’re after, Maggie Wells is the author to meet those needs.
I immediately loved Detective Lang Sheppard. He was a gentleman, playful, charming, funny…the whole package (and he obviously adored his grandmother to put up with her horrible matchmaking skills). It wasn’t difficult to fall for the guy and empathize with his dating fiascos.
Jessica was an equally sweet heroine. She was smart enough to be weary of the stranger trying to help her, a bit flummoxed that someone as handsome as him was something of a serial dater. Her nicknames for Lang were cute, but the ones for his ditzy date were even funnier. I also liked that she wasn’t glammed up when they first met. It made the attraction that much sweeter that he was able to look past her disheveled state.
As a couple, they were very well suited for one another. She had a great sense of humor when she let it show, they were able to tease, joke around and laugh together. They seemed to be good listeners as well as the conversation flowed and they bared some of their baggage. Lang surprised me with his up front admission that he wasn’t in the market for flings, but he wanted to find The One and settle down. Jessica could appreciate the honesty of that admission and decide whether she wanted to see where their connection would take them. They moved very quickly for a couple of strangers, but they both felt the magic of New Year’s Eve, new beginnings and lust in the air, so I was rooting for them to get together. I loved the slow burn from a chaste kiss to a steamy kiss to fooling around in the cop car to the satisfying love scene at the end. The Stud definitely earned that nickname. So cute; I’m keeping it up front on my Kindle so I can re-read it when the mood for short and sexy strikes me.

When you finish reading a story with a goofy grin on your face, you know it's something special. I loved this tale of two people who were a bit down on their luck--one in terms of romance, and the other in terms of...well, everything. Thanks to fate, a faulty ignition, and a gum-chewing 'Klepto Kardashian', the two are brought together on one of the most romantic nights of the year, New Year's Eve. A little more bad luck-turned good allows their evening to last well into the new year, and they ring it in, in the best possible way: by getting flung!
"You have no idea how bad I want to fling you." "If I promise to go to dinner with you some other night, will you fling me now?"
The chemistry between Lang and Jessica sizzles throughout. But the thing I loved most about this story was the humour.
'The ice-crusted scarf flapped in the breeze and she charged straight at it like a half-drunk, partially frozen bull with a head full of a steam and a hairdo that looked like it came from a blender.'
Hot, hilarious, and heartwarming! I adored The Last First Date!
I really enjoyed this story. It really shows that love can be found where you least expect it. Lang is a handsome detective but there is a lot more to him than that. He's caring, considerate, he gets along well with his colleagues, and he loves his grandma. He's truly a great guy rolled up in a hot and sexy package. All he wants is to find 'The One.' He wants to find the person that he can spend the rest of his life with. Sadly after 48 first dates, the 'one' is still to be found ... until he meets Jessica. Jessica isn't having a very good day. Heck she hasn't had a very good last few weeks. I don't want to give anything away but once their paths cross a bad night suddenly isn't quite so bad after all. Both Jessica and Lang are funny, interesting, and complex people. I enjoyed their humor and banter. On the sexy scale I'd say this book rocks the charts.
What a cute couple! I would have been very happy with a few more chapters of their bantering. I wanted to see how many more nicknames Jessica could come up for her dreamy detective. The wordsmithing of Maggie Wells never disappoints!
Maggie Wells is a new author to me. I read this as part of a 4 book collection through overdrive. The Last First Date was a cute very short novella. As with any other novella I read, well most of them anyway, I am left wanting. This one cut off a little sharper than most so I felt like I needed more answers than normal.
Overall it is a cute short story. Detective Langley “Lang Sheppard finally has a day off and is having the worst first date of this life. Jessica Vickers is dealing with recent life setbacks and is just trying to get to the New Year to start over fresh. They each are just holding on to their pathetic lives until the clock strikes midnight. A chance stop at a local convenience store finds them in each other’s path and so it begins.
I wish it would have gone a couple more chapters to set up a little more of the story. There are some pretty comical sections that made me laugh out loud. I liked Maggie Wells writing style so I probably will give another story of hers a try (after getting through my TBR shelf first ha)
THE LAST FIRST DATE contains what I can only describe as THE best meeting between a couple in any book ever.
Detective Lang Sheppard is sick and tired of dating. He's lost count of how many terrible first dates he's been on, and he's really empathizing with women who say "all the good ones are taken." Then on a snowy New Year's Eve at the bequest of his grandmother, Lang has his very last first date. No, it's not with the woman who he left with--that woman decided to commit petty larceny before their date even got off the ground. Instead, once he sets eyes on a frazzled woman needing her car jumped, Lang knows his life is about to change.
Jessica Vickers just wanted to pick up some essentials for her New Year's party of one, but between her car not starting and being a witness to bubble gum Barbie's theft, her year is ending just as craptastic as it was all year long. When Detective Dreamy asks--no, orders--her to come with him to the station to book Klepto Kardashian, she has a niggling feeling her life is about to change. Join Jessica and Lang on the last first date of their lives.
THE LAST FIRST DATE by the talented Maggie Wells is included in the Harlequin Contemporary Box Set, Volume 2 and is a terrifically funny story that will have you chuckling and panting in turn. Jessica's inner monologue is really hysterical and her names for Lang and his date just kept me smiling. "Detective delicious, officer Galahad, detective do me, officer hottie and his dream date, backseat bimbette, shoplifting Sally" The fun went on and on.
I really loved the unique storyline, and THE LAST FIRST DATE is one I could easily see as the plot of a romcom on the big screen. Poor Jessica was a hot mess, suspicious and jaded but a woman who trusted her instincts. Lang is a wonderful man, a true catch who wants a wife and a family and who isn't afraid to admit it. Even though his dating is fodder for police station bets, he soldiers on, determined that "the one" is out there somewhere. The sex scenes were decently hot between them and the chemistry was excellent. Like all of the books by Ms. Wells I've had the good fortune to read, THE LAST FIRST DATE was a funny and lighthearted read with great dialogue and characters you can connect with.
3.5/4 Stars. 3.75 Stars? It was a cute story, and I liked the set up for a nice read and then...it ended. Like, I hit the next page button on my Kindle and honestly thought that there was some sort of error in the book, because it stops before there is a resolution. The characters, Jessica and Detective Lang (Jessica Lange, anyone?), meet at what I guess is a sort of 7-11, where Lang's New Years date has shoplifted and Jessica's car has broken down. The setup was funny, and I was settling in for a cute read when, Bam! They're almost having sex in Lang's car in front of Jessica's mother's house. Then a patrol officer shows up to bust the lust-filled bubble in the car (also, Lang and Jessica are drinking margarita's from a bottle in a running car...what happened to those open container laws, Detective?!). Anyway, instead of going their separate ways and building an actual relationship, they go inside and have sex. The End. No seriously, it just ends after they have sex. Am I supposed to infer they live HEA? They don't know one another—hell, I barely know their characters as a reader! They've been acquainted for less than 24 hours and had sex once and I'm supposed to buy that they are a solid couple? It was disappointing, because I liked the build up, I liked the meet-cute, I even liked what I knew of the characters. I just didn't like that the story only seemed half-finished.
This book was offered to me by the author herself in exchange for an honest review.
Which is what this is.
I was discouraged within one paragraph of this, because there was a typo. Not something that bothered me in itself, but I've gotten books before that were full of them and they throw off the read. But there was just that typo so I moved on.
The book was good. Really good. Well, the plot itself was . . . ok. Some things seemed a little quirky about the booking, the store owner. Things I couldn't put my finger on but that bothered me.
What I LOVED was the characters. They both have unique, strong voices and the humour was entertaining. Made me laugh out loud, quite a few times.
There was some steamy moments that I also enjoyed, but again something nagged at me. Not sure what. The characters get involved 'too' soon? Some of the cheesy-old-harlequin-ish romance?
I would have given this a three if not for the humour. All in all, took me about an hour to read, an hour I greatly appreciated using up for this novel.
Thanks again Ms Wells for the opportunity to read your novel!
I got this one for review but I decided not to write a formal review. It's a novella of about 70 pages and I got 37% in before I gave it up. If I had finished it I would to have written a ranty review about it and frankly, I just didn't want to.
In short, I thought the heroine was mean and I was far from convinced that the hero was a nice guy. The "bad" dates were a lot of stereotypes which I felt were unfunny ("man hands"? seriously?) and I didn't like the way everytime the heroine thought of the hero it was with a new nickname - Detective Dreamboat, Officer Galahad, Detective Delish - Every. Single. Time. It got old real quick for me. I just think my sense of humour doesn't gel with this author's. There was also some ordinary stereotyping of the convenience store owners which I felt was problematic.
So at the point I realised that to continue I'd be hate reading - something I don't enjoy. I pulled the plug.
Possibly I was just in the wrong mood but this book wasn't working for me and life's too short, you know?
This is an extremely well written erotic novella. I’ll say it again This is an extremely well written erotic novella. I like a little ‘spice in a romance story but not if I can’t connect to the characters. I’ll pass on reading a book with zero character development but lots of sex. It’s not exactly ‘steamy if you don’t care about the characters as individuals. Unfortunately I see this more often than I care to admit in some erotic novels. That was NOT the case with Lang and Jessica. Two great characters I could completely relate to which made the ‘steamy absolutely SCORCHING HOT! LOVED IT. A re-read for me may even share it with the hubby ;)
If I’d dreamt up a night as awful and perfect as Jessica’s, I’d wake up and realize it was just a dream. The author did a wonderful job of putting the characters in a desperate situation before giving them ultimate happiness. I loved their banter, so great. Really made this story stand out and will definitely lead to me reading more from this author!
Cute story that takes place over one night. Short - would have loved to have a full length with this couple, but what we get works well. Hero is a detective whose bimbo NYE date steals a pack of gum. Heroine has car broken down at the gas station where the gum theft takes place. Hero offers heroine ride home where fun things ensue. Story made me LOL and it's also pretty steamy.
2.5? 2.75? A cute story that kinda seemed like was focused too much on the "meet cute" that wasn't that cute. The best part was their session of "get to know you" and all in the car - after the station; when interrupted as well.
The "my life is in shambles" and mom aspects weren't integrated that well imo.
Perfectly sweet and adorable with one heck of a love scene. Full disclosure, this short book is all about insta-love, so keep that in mind if you are thinking of picking it up. Loved the entire premise and thought that opening scene was great. Glad I got to judge it.
