Engravings of Wraith

Rate this book
Bailey Cameron is a woman with secrets. The reclusive owner of a successful corporation, she is also hostage to a covert life she neither wanted nor asked for. One that refuses to become a part of her past.

Blackmailed into a return to her deadly role as the Wraith, a frightening entity in the world that lives in the shadows, Bailey decides to break free. She settles in for a brutal game of chess with her former employers, prepared for every eventuality but one -- Piper Tate, her new assistant, who decides that the dark, mysterious Bailey is someone she wants to know better. A lot better.

The stakes continue to rise, as Piper discovers in Bailey a gentle, innocent heart. A heart that beats within the body of a killer who can't be tamed and who is prepared to do whatever it takes to preserve the new world Piper has introduced her to.

At first I was going to say that I was conflicted about my rating for this because the version I read was the online version, and I felt like I should compare it to other fanfiction. The problem with that, is that was fanfiction. was fanfiction. was fanfiction. was fanfiction. There are a lot of really, really good novels that started off as online stories. This one? This one's okay, but it's not great.

Unfortunately, Dellacroix isn't too terrific when it comes to writing emotions. Her dramatic scenes, her romantic scenes, her personal scenes, all have fairly heavy-handed delivery; you can almost hear the sensitive piano music tinkling in the background. Humor? She's great at humor. Action? She's great at action. The emotions all fell flat for me, though.

This book isn't terrible. If you have time to kill and can find the online version, it's a good time waster. There are some really funny scenes, and Bailey is a cyclone once she gets going; her ability to deliver an intimidating line is to be admired. But this is a novel in need of a lot of editing, trimming, scene tweaks, etc. There's certainly far worse fanfiction out there, but there's also far better. Go into it with moderate expectations, and you'll probably be fine.

2.5 stars, rounded down.

If I could only have one book, to keep with me for the remainder of my life.... and read over, and over, and over again....... Engravings of Wraith would be it. The first time I read this book, it was online. And all I wanted was to get a printed copy. I searched, and searched. I finally found a random bookstore, in Arizona, that was willing to ship me their final copy. It was used, and someone had spilled some coffee on it. It didn't matter to me. When that package arrived, I broke it open, and held that book to my chest! I love this book, and can't even begin to tell you how many times I've re-read this beautiful story. Sure, it's filled with a lot of violence, but the tender love story between Bailey and Piper, touched my heart. These two women go through a lot. Teaching one another different things about life, and love. And someday, I hope to see the beautiful and dark Bailey Cameron standing in a small boat, with fog covering the water, holding her Samurai sword!

Now, I just need to know how I give this book more than 5 stars!

Well... it could have been a really good book. I had high hopes in the begining and thougth that I would give it 4 stars (in my scale it means I really, really liked the book but it still isn't one of my lifetime favourites) but unfortunatelly as I kept reading my rate kept getting lower and lower. Giving it 2 stars means that it isn't terrible but faaar from a good one. Actually I didn't give it a 1 star cause I have soft spot for heart-wrenching stories, which it is, but it's not written in a skillfull and enjoyable way imo.
The biggest issue for me was the tendency to exaggerate and unimaginable situations that are described as they could be real and every reader knows there is no frigging way for them to happen. Up to the point that the novel gets cringier and cringier.

Where do I start my praise for this book? It's awesomely awesome! I loved the enigmatic character of Wraith, I loved the though unrealistic work romance with Piper, I loved the thrill and emotional vulnerabilities of the characters and even when i thought some places were just annoyingly too fictional I still loved the illusion of the outcomes. Wonderful writing wonderful characters.
