Thorn, an outlaw's son, wasn't supposed to be a slave. He's been sold to Tyburn, an executioner, and they're headed to Castle Gloom in Gehenna, the land of undead, where Thorn will probably be fed to a vampire.
Lilith Shadow wasn't supposed to be ruler of Gehenna. But following the murder of her family, young Lily became the last surviving member of House Shadow, a long line of dark sorcerers. Her country is surrounded by enemies and the only way she can save it is by embracing her heritage and practicing the magic of the undead. But how can she when, as a girl, magic is forbidden to her?
Just when it looks like Lily will have to leave her home forever, Thorn arrives at Castle Gloom. A sudden death brings them together, inspires them to break the rules, and leads them to soar to new heights in this fantasy with all the sparkle and luster of a starry night sky.
It's not really fair for me to recommend this yet, because you won't be able to buy it until it comes out in April, but I would highly recommend you keep it on your long-term radar.
Have you ever started reading a book thinking, 'Oh, well, I may not like it but I'll give it a try,' then quickly found yourself sucked into the story and thinking, 'Holy Hera, this is good!' That was my experience with Shadow Magic. It's told from the alternating perspectives of Thorn, the wayward son of an outlaw, and Lillith Shadow, the heir of one of six ancient magical kingdoms. There should be no reason for these two to ever cross paths, but they do, and the combination is explosive.
Lillith is the heir of Gehenna, the kingdom of darkness. She wasn't supposed to become the ruler, but her family is murdered under mysterious circumstances, which leaves her next in line to the throne. Her family was once able to summon legions of the undead, speak to ghosts, and do all sorts of cool darkness magic that Nico di Angelo would approve of. Unfortunately, Gehenna's glory days are long past, and women are not allowed to practice sorcery upon pain of death, so Lillith cannot use whatever powers she might have. Gehenna is so weak, Lillith is forced to make a marriage alliance with their ancient enemies, the bright and shiny kingdom of light. (Gross!)
Thorn, a young nobody from the north, is captured and sold into slavery to an executioner named Tyburn, who happens to work for the kingdom of Shadow. Thorn arrives in the land of darkness, and is soon plunged into a mystery with Lillith about who killed her parents. We find out that Thorn and Lillith both have unexpected powers and many secrets. We meet some fantastic characters, including a giant bat named Hades (How could I not love that?).
This book is a wonderful page-turner for young readers. It's got all the elements of a great fantasy, rendered in a fresh, alluring, well-crafted world, with sympathetic characters and tons of mystery. I can't recommend it highly enough. Come spring time, get a copy. You'll thank me for it!
Quitting halfway through. Other than the opening scene at the slave market everything has been really generic middle grade fantasy. I feel like I can predict the "revelations" that are going to happen re: the characters' heritage etc. Nothing particularly stands out about them or the writing. If you are young and haven't read a lot of fantasy, this is probably a satisfactory if mediocre read, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it for grown ups, or even kids who've read a lot of the genre already.
Now this was a fun book! Shadow Magic has all the stuff I love in my escape. The writing is seriously fantastic with it's crisp storytelling, the characters are imaginative, witty and wonderfully wicked and the world has me craving for more! This goes right up there with Harry Potter and Percy Jackson! I can't wait for book two!! Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this first book in the series by Joshua Khan. It's my first book under this name, but my introduction to this author was under his other name, Sarwat Chadda, with City of the Plague Gods. I loved that book because I liked how Muslims and Arabs were presented in that novel and I learned a lot about their culture and their belief in Allah as well as other beliefs in minor deities and demons. That book motivated me to check out this series and I'm so glad I did. In this story, necromancers are not necessarily a bad thing. Lili comes from a family of Shadow Magic users, which means her ancestors could summon the dead and yes, that means zombies and ghosts and vampires, to name a few. Other families have other forms of magic, but the common thread in all of the families is that the magic in all the lines seems to be waning. Additionally, females are not allowed to practice magic by law. But Lily is the last of her line after her family was murdered by a group of bandits. The other main character is Thorn, the son of an outlaw who is caught poaching a deer and ends up being sold as a slave to Lily's executioner. Their paths cross and they become friends, along with a noble's son, K'leef, who is being held hostage by Lily's uncle. But things continue to go downhill and it becomes apparent that it will be up to Lily, Thorn, and K'leef to unravel the threads.
This book definitely had some of the usual fantasy tropes, and as I said, some of it was predictable. And yet, the author managed to keep it fresh with some creative additions so that my interest was held the entire time. Lily and Thorn are the main characters and I found them both to be very interesting and well-developed. I loved Hades, the awesome vampire bat, as well as Lily's puppy and Tyburn's horse. This is a fine example of middle school fantasy and I will be recommending it to my middle school students, especially those that enjoy Percy Jackson or Harry Potter. There's some mystery, adventure, good character development, humor, action, and fun fantasy elements.
Although this book is part of a series, I do like that it doesn't end on a cliffhanger. That said, I will be jumping immediately into the next book.
***
Shadow Magic is a fantasy for kids that combines the classic themes of the genre paranormal and horror features. The plot reminds the dynamics of Game of Thrones (very sensitive version) but the characters are all young and in addition to political and territorial dynamics, we find black magic, zombies and ghosts. The atmosphere is dark but there are delicate situations with regard to feelings and friendships. The two main characters come from different ways: the plebs and the royal court, but they find a way to come together and get on well. Everything is well characterized by the environments to the characters, but the reading flows nicely and the novel ends with satisfaction in a couple of days. A fantastic adventure that if he has conquered me, it definitely captivate fans of the genre.
If you enjoy fast paced sword and sorcery, this will be an impossible high fantasy novel to put down. The characters are compelling, the world building is well-crafted, and the plot is riveting. The fantasy reminded me of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series while the twists and turns of the plot brought Jennifer Nielsen's The False Prince to mind. Recommended for those middle grade readers who are on the lookout for the next series to read after Harry Potter.
A fun middle-grade fantasy, series starter. For fans of Harry Potter or "Lord of the Rings lite," this book is set in a unique land, with various kingdoms, and there are different magic abilities for each of the royal families. The main character, Thorn, gets taken to Castle Gloom as a slave/apprentice to the royal executioner. Castle Gloom is where the Shadow family lives, currently ruled by the princess Lily--but as girls are forbidden to practice magic, she is frustrated by that restriction. Her parents died at the hand of bandits, but as she learns, they may have been murdered--and at her betrothal event, someone else is almost murdered, setting in motion many plots. Basically a fun lighthearted fantasy that also spoofs Halloween and zombies, with a set of memorable characters and cool necromancy magic. Plus, a giant bat that Thorn gets to ride!
Assolutamente consigliato.
Family, and found family, and giant bats. Adorable and perilous. This is more traditionally in the Fantasy Tropes way than the author's other stuff, but he still finds a way to spin it to unusual and interesting. (For example, the necromancer isn't necessarily the bad guy in this story.)
It's been a really long time since I've read a middle grade fantasy that kept me enthralled and was original. Shadow Magic restored my faith in middle grade fantasy.
A very good start to a new YA series about 7 kingdoms and the young adults getting read to rule them. The characters are appealing and well drawn and the writing is first-rate.
Thorn, a scrappy kid from a poor family, is kidnapped by slavers and on sale when he meets the chief executioner of the Shadow Kingdom. The Shadows wield dark magic, raising ghosts and zombies to do their fighting for them. Not a natural place for Thorn who grew up in the forest and has a fearsome set of skills for living in the woods, not in a land where people use bats as carrier pigeons and live in buildings which have never been exposed to natural light. In Castle Gloom Thorn meets Lily, the 13 year old heir to the Shadow empire and scheduled to be married to someone she hates. With assassination attempts and diplomacy failures there's plenty of palace intrigue to fuel several plot lines.
There's a lot of good action in the story. The mystery isn't that mysterious and yet, parts of it went in directions I wasn't expecting. I'm looking forward to continuing with this series.
I read this because Rick Riordan recommended it. I was skeptical since both use the same publisher, but there was a lot of originality in this title. Hades was probably my favorite animal in this story. I loved Thorn and his loyalty to those he loves, especially his Dad. K'leef is also a great character. Lilly of course, is really wonderful. She grows during the story and changes, which can be an indication of an excellent book. Lilly is no spoiled princess, content to let others carry out all the action. She may have started like that to some extent but she grew beyond that. Let me add that I loved the design of the book with the bat in the upper right corner that you can make "fly" if you let the pages flip by as in one of the original type of "moving pictures". I am definitely anxious to read the next book! I have to go put a hold on it right now!
If you are reading this comment (which you obviously are because you know..) I should just let you know that this book made Joshua Khan my second favourite author after J.K Rowling (it's THAT good) and I DEMAND YOU TO READ IT RIGHT NOW. It's awesome.
Captured by slavers while trying to locate his father, Thorn is purchased by Tyburn, an executioner who works for the House Shadow. Agreeing to work a year and a day in exchange for his freedom, Thorn heads to Castle Gloom with Tyburn. There, he meets Lily Shadow. Except for her drunk of an uncle, her family was all recently murdered by a group of assassins. Tyburn managed to kill all but one and now that assassin seems to be back to murder Lily and Lily's betrothed may be the one who hired them. With no ideas who to trust, Thorn begins to look into what happened. As he and Tyburn look into the threat, however, Thorn starts to wonder if his father may be mixed up in it all. Could his father really be an assassin or is it Lily's obnoxious betrothed? Can Thorn save Lily?
The characters in this novel are amazingly well developed and the author does a great job of building the mystery behind their pasts. The plot is complex, engaging, and easily draws the reader into the story. Fans of mystery, magic, adventure, and fantasy will enjoy reading this book.

Read this aloud to my 9 year old. There's magic and mystery and dark versus light (the Shadow family versus the Solar family...in an interesting twist that I'm still uncertain how I feel about it...the Shadows (dark) are the good guys and the Solar family are not so good). It's a fun story with a ginormous bat and some fun twists. It was interesting because near the end, you discover who killed Lilly Shadow's parents. The person who did it proclaims that he did it for the good of Gehenna. He says that he will make Gehenna great again. My 9 year old said he sounded like another political leader that perhaps also shouldn't be trusted.
