An ancient evil of unfathomable power plots the unspeakable--the destruction of the mortal realm and beyond. Man's only hope lies in Peerless Poe, a hard-luck private eye with a taste for booze and a magnetic attraction to danger. A former member of the clandestine Order of the Sacred Method, Poe must forge an uneasy alliance with those who exploited him against enemy bent on global annihilation. This unholy threat wears a woman's face and wields dark energies capable of destroying normal men. But Poe hasn't been normal in years. The Order saw to that. Poe is scarred. Poe is transformed. Poe is . . . Method Man.
I saw the cover of this and who the writer was and did a double take. Is this The Method Man? Yes it is. I have to say right here in the post I was so into it; I was chuckling out loud. Here is the description of the graphic novel as it reads from the back cover: “An ancient evil of unfathomable power plots the unspeakable- the destruction of the mortal realm and beyond . Man’s only hope lies in Peerless Poe, a hard-luck private eye with a taste for booze and a magnetic attraction to danger. A former member of the Clandestine Order of the Sacred Method, Poe must forge an uneasy alliance with those who exploited him against an enemy bent on global annihilation. This unholy threat wears a women’s face and wields dark energies capable of destroying normal men. But Poe hasn’t been normal in years. The Order saw to that. Poe is scarred. Poe is transformed. Poe is Method Man!â€ The entire g.n. is not long. The concept is Method Man’s, the script is done by David Atchison and the illustrations by Sanford Greene. The concept is fun; the dialogue is crisp and real. The artwork fits like a glove. I really enjoy finding new avenues for any type of novel & Grand Central Publishing has definitely provided one here. I am going to see what else they have in their stable. I have to give props to Method . His throwdown is no jive smack. At times he uses language that some may find offensive , but it seems to fit the situation and is not just put there for shock value. Besides when one is talking %$#@ like Peerless Poe does, it is in the heat of situation, got it . I am hoping that there are other offerings besides this one. The character he has created in Peerless Poe is awesome. He contains all the basic ingredients of the wise@#$ detective that has the hard veneer surface, but the soft ,do-gooder inner core .I applaud Method Man for this graphic novel. I think most people’s reaction to hearing that he has a g.n., would be huh??? The guys in our Family did. If you have a hunger for graphic novels ,are looking for something different than the norm, and are willing not to judge a book by its cover, then give this one a go . Have some fun with it, after all isn’t that part of what the graphic novel is supposed to be? Put this bad boy in your Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ â€“to read- list and don’t forget about it. I picked up this graphic novel at a thrift store. For $1, I couldn't pass it up.
Method Man is a graphic novel written by David Atchison and illustrated by Sanford Greene. It's based on an idea by rapper/actor Method Man.
The Method Men are a group of monks. They are all descendants of Cain, the biblical figure who committed the first murder when he killed his brother Able. All of the Method Men bear the Mark or Cain. They are also responsible for killing biblical monsters such as giants and levithians.
The most powerful of all biblical monsters, Lilth, has escaped from her prison. Only the Method Men can defeat her once and for all. The only problem is, they're being methodically slaughtered.
Enter Peerless Poe - a former Method Man who was expelled from the order for having sex, drinking whiskey, and smoking weed. Peerless, who now works as a private investigator, finds the future of humanity rests in his hands.
Methon Man is a pleasant surprise. Peerless Poe fills the story with the type of one-liners found in 80s action movies.
The art looks like graffiti to life. I mean that in a good way. Method Man looks exactly how I'd expect a comic from Method Man to look.
The only miss in Method Man is the plot moves too quickly. Atchison's script is only 89 pages. There is plenty of room to play with the characters and introduce the world and its mythos. There's no need to rush.
Overall, give Method Man a shot if you want a quick, fun read.
This was my Wakanda Forever Challenge read for the Blackathon readathon/reading challenge. I originally borrowed this comic on Overdrive and was livid with how badly the graphics translated--or DIDN'T translate--in the ebook version. I returned the book and just bought it on Amazon. I read another awesome comic while I waited (Bingo Love, if you're interested) and hoped I wouldn't be disappointed when Method Man finally arrived. Finally, it arrived, and I was kid-on-a-snow-day excited. And...
It was....okay.
Admittedly, the biggest attraction for me was Method Man himself. And a man with a comic book collection exceeding 25,000 really should be able to deliver, right? Eh...maybe. I did enjoy it for the most part and really found myself laughing aloud at some points. This wasn't a "bad" comic by any means, and I can say it would have been much stronger had it been longer. (I promise that is not my weak attempt at rhyming.) Or even if there were more issues so that I could follow Peerless Poe along his journey.
Overall, the story was solid, and I'm always a sucker for the Pow, Bam, Boom action in comics when I do actually read them (or watch old Batman--circa Adam West--episodes). I'm not sure if this is an honest three rating, or if I'm blinded because I loved Meth (the man, not the drug, guys...). But I'm sticking with my three and could easily bump it up if more were to follow.
I got this title as an eBook from my library and I was disappointed in the quality of the text. The images were fine and the art work was easy to follow but the text was blurry and small and very hard to read. It could have been the reader I was using 'Adobe Digital Editions' on PC and OverDrive on my Galaxy tab but I couldn't zoom in or view the pages full screen. You would think someone would go through and retouch the graphic novel for digital distribution and not just scan the pages into a pdf file. Actually if they had just scanned it the resolution would probably have been better!
Some comedic elements - And it looks pretty good - but composition-wise some of these frames seem like they were put together in a rush - Particularly some of the villains - demons look like cartoons - which undermines the premise of evil. Maybe it was intentional to creat this discord, but it didn't't really work for me. And why miss this opportunity to throw in some cameos from the Wu? who was this clean-cut yahoo sidekick? Who is this old master - Cardboard cutouts without depth. I love me some Wu, but this was a hack job.
This short graphic novel written by Method Man from the Wu-Tang clan and is a fun read. Peerless Poe, is a private investigator and former member of the secret Order of the Sacred Method, Poe is nervous about forging an alliance with a group of people who have exploited in the past. The new threat that they are challenging unleashes dark energies capable of destroying normal men.
I loved the mythos and the worldbuilding. The action and wit was pretty straight-forward. However the angsty ending was really unnecessary and killed the story for me, otherwise this graphic novel would've gotten a higher rating.
In the right hands this could have been something enjoyable as there are some good one liners and a few interesting plot points but they were taken nowhere and the story ended up being one I had seen before.
The sketches in the back of the book are better than in the comic itself. Clear signs it was a rushed production. Not a bad premise, but terrible execution.
The characters and their designs were pretty cool. However, it could have been better plot wise and in development. Also, it wouldn't have hurt if it had been longer.
