J'étais très curieuse de lire ce livre qui enthousiasme les jeunes lecteurs autour de moi, contente d'avoir une lecture francophone pour une fois, plutôt qu'une traduction d'un succès anglo-saxon. Autre point très positif, l'éditeur propose ce premier tome de la série à un tout petit prix en ebook, c'est très bien. Dans un but marketing certainement, mais c'est tout de même très bien !
Il y a de très bonnes choses dans ce livre dont j'ai lu une petite moitié. J'ai eu un peu mauvaise conscience de si peu apprécier un texte autant travaillé, mais j'étais trop agacée et j'ai préféré arrêté. Les maladresses étaient trop nombreuses et trop fréquentes pour que je puisse passer outre.
Le cadre de l'histoire est bien pensé et fonctionne bien : un nouveau président des EU décide de privatiser à tout va pour corriger le déficit du pays, la NASA devient privée et les acheteurs balaient tous les projets en cours sauf celui de la conquête de la planète Mars. Puis, pour rentabiliser leur investissement, ils décident d'envoyer non pas des astronautes pour commencer à coloniser la planète, mais douze jeunes gens des deux sexes dans le cadre d'une télé-réalité inter-planétaire - six mariages promis pour commencer à peupler Mars.
Le style de l'auteur est de qualité, il écrit bien dans la forme (hélas pas dans la technique, voir plus loin). C'est bien agréable de lire des romans jeunesse avec des phrases joliment structurées et un vocabulaire riche.
L'idée de proposer une héroïne, Léonor, attirée par le programme pour des raisons plus pragmatiques que glamours est bonne, même si en creusant un peu on réalise que c'est la seule raison qui pourrait pousser quelqu'un de cet âge-là (tous ont autour de 18 ans) à aller s'expatrier sur une planète lointaine pour ne jamais en revenir, en compagnie de seulement onze inconnus...
Le choix de mettre en scène des personnes de pays différents est également très rafraîchissant.
La double narration alternée, première personne du singulier pour Léonor et troisième personne pour suivre ceux restés sur terre, était une bonne idée et aurait pu enrichir beaucoup le récit si les choix narratifs de l'auteur avaient été plus subtils.
L'histoire est intéressante, très riche, et aurait pu me passionner si je n'avais pas été sans cesse rebutée par les points qui me semblent de réels défauts� :/
Enfin et surtout, l'auteur a très bien travaillé, avec beaucoup d'enthousiasme, aux aspects pratiques et techniques de la conquête de l'espace, accordant beaucoup de soin en particulier au vaisseau spatial, offrant même un croquis détaillé, c'est très sympa.
Les points faibles sont hélas trop pesants dans ce livre et m'ont forcé à abandonner ma lecture, bien que j'aurais été assez curieuse de connaître la suite. Voilà qui prouve que j'aurais été un piètre éditeur ! Jamais je n'aurais accepté un manuscrit nourri de ce genre de lourdeurs, j'aurais insisté et insisté pour que l'auteur les corrige ! Et pourtant, tel quel ce roman enthousiasme ses lecteurs, je dois donc, encore, pinailler trop, peut-être...
Pour commencer la volonté de l'auteur de ne rien laisser dans l'ombre appauvrit beaucoup l'ambiance du livre : dès les premiers instants on apprend ce que fomentent les "méchants", alors qu'il aurait été tout à fait possible, et souhaitable à mon avis, de les faire parler à mots couverts plutôt que de nous jeter leurs sinistres plans à la figure à la première occasion ! Les seuls mystères qui nous restent à découvrir sont le petit secret bien caché de chacun, une caractéristique très particulière (ça vous rappelle une télé réalité, oui moi aussi !). À mon stade de lecture j'en avais déjà découvert deux, alors c'est sûr que c'est intrigant, mais de l'ordre du détail.
Ceci aurait permis en outre de corriger un défaut rédhibitoire à mes yeux : très souvent les personnages expliquent quelque chose en détail à des personnes qui le savent déjà parfaitement bien ! Ces propos artificiels sont là pour le lecteur, et uniquement pour lui, et c'est aussi gênant que vaguement ridicule. Surtout quand on assiste au complot des méchants et qu'ils se renvoient la balle pour tout nous expliquer de leurs plans qu'ils connaissent tous sur le bout des doigts.
Autre maladresse narrative, curieusement très souvent rencontrée dans bien des succès marketings (jamais dans les classiques, et pour cause !), alors que cela me semble être le B.A.BA de l'écriture : quand on emploie la première personne du singulier, à moins de choisir un mode confession (le personnage s'adresse directement au lecteur et lui explique ce qu'il doit savoir), on ne devrait éviter de signaler des évidences. Par exemple, on peut dire "Je rejette en arrière mes cheveux qui me gênent", mais pas "Je rejette en arrière ma splendide crinière de cheveux blond doré". Tout simplement parce que, premièrement, la personne SAIT que ses cheveux sont blonds et que, deuxièmement, à moins de nourrir un culte de sa personne d'un narcissisme effarant, personne ne pense de soi en termes admiratifs.
Dans ce livre c'est catastrophique : Léonor parle sans cesse de ses cheveux ROUX (quelle surprise, oh la la mes cheveux sont roux dis-donc ! en 18 ans je n'avais ja-mais remarqué, mais dis-donc c'est vrai qu'ils sont roux !!). L'auteur est manifestement complètement sous le charme du personnage qu'il a inventé et il en fait trop, tout le temps, beuh.
Par exemple : "J'essuie ma poitrine couleur de lait, la seule partie de mon corps que les taches de rousseur ont oublié d'éclabousser" (très jolie formule d'ailleurs, à la 3° personne du singulier j'aurais apprécié).
Je ne sais pas pour vous, mais quand je sors de la douche, je n'ai pas ce genre de propos en tête ! ^-^
D'une manière générale, j'ai trouvé les personnages ratés, ils n'ont jamais pris vie à mes yeux. Il y a beaucoup de contradictions, comme celle de présenter des jeunes gens triés sur le volet, ayant accepté de quitter la Terre à tout jamais pour se marier à un inconnu dans un choix excessivement restreint, de subir une année d'entraînement intensif, des jeunes gens au passé douloureux, des jeunes gens qui ne peuvent qu'être intelligents et réfléchis, et de les faire parler de manière complètement idiote et stéréotypée les trois quarts du temps. J'ai particulièrement grincé des dents à entendre les filles s'extasier en mode groupie sur les photos des prétendants qu'elles découvrent enfin, alors qu'elles sont embarquées sur une fusée depuis 3 jours pour aller vivre sur Mars pour toujours ! Qu'on tienne ce genre de propos superficiels à propos de personnages publics ou de romans je le conçois. Mais dans une situation de ce genre, réelle ? Non, c'est ridicule. Aucune fille ne s'inquiète de la personnalité des prétendants, juste de la taille de leurs biceps et de la couleur de leurs yeux. Sauf l'héroïne, évidemment, c'est censé être la seule à avoir du plomb dans la tête, mais ce n'est pas crédible du tout. Elles devraient avoir peur, au moins un peu, être inquiètes, se demander QUI sont vraiment ces personnes qui vont partager le reste de leur vie. Là on dirait des enfants de cinq ans à un goûter d'anniversaire !
La psychologie des personnages est inexistante, on reste dans le stéréotype à peine nuancé. L'image offerte des jeunes adultes de 18 ans n'est vraiment pas flatteuse...
Enfin le style est souvent très niais et démodé. Pas dans le genre désuet, dans le genre vocabulaire mal choisi, les effets de style... Ça sonne très faux à mes oreilles, c'est crispant. Et l'admiration éperdue de l'auteur pour ses personnages me gêne beaucoup (pourtant c'est un bon choix, il semble que ça marche super bien près de la plupart des lecteurs !)
Voilà quelques exemples :
"Mais rien ne peut nous calmer. Nous nous poursuivons comme des folles. On descend les barreaux de l'échelle quatre par quatre, et Louve [le chien] aussi � les caniches sont les meilleurs chiens de cirque c'est bien connu ! Aboiements, cris de joie, dérapages plus ou moins contrôlés, batailles d'oreillers".
Ce passage est censé être mignon j'imagine, je le trouve cruchon�
"Ses cheveux châtains, denses et lisses, sont coiffés avec application, soulignant ses traits réguliers, la structure harmonieuse de son visage. La lumière des projecteurs embarqués fait briller ses yeux gris sous ses sourcils droits et épais, donnant à son regard une intensité peu commune".
N'en jetez plus, on a compris, c'est un fantasme vivant !
Et on a le droit à ça à chaque fois, à chaque personnage, presque à chaque scène.
Alors certes c'est bien écrit, mais je n'aime pas les post-it du genre :"là, regarde, il est super beau, pâme-toi !!" ou "regarde elle est si belle, si cool, si parfaite, c'est le personnage idéal !!
Je préfère me faire ma propre idée, grâce ce que l'auteur me montre et non pas par ce qu'il m'impose�

Actual rating 3,5 stars!
I’d never heard off this book before, but I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for an easy read. One of my guilty pleasures is reality TV so that combined with an awesome space adventure and dirty politics made an really amazing book! This book definitely isn’t flawless but I really enjoyed it and I’m anticipating the sequel.
Concept (4,0 stars)
Five years ago I did a project about the colonization of Mars that's being realized right now. The organization Mars One is finally ready to start training people and sending them to Mars to try and start a colony. So I was super excited when I read that this book would contain a fiction story about a sort like project. I was really interested in how Dixen would combine the reality show with the space adventure.
Design (4,0 stars)
I think the cover is cool! And I really like that the front image actually plays a part in this book (although I don’t like the image that much). I love the stars on the spines and I think the whole cover matches the book well. I also really love the bookmark I got with it that contained all the candidates name, their country and their age. The title is just perfect. It stands for one of the two moons of Mars and for fear in Greek mythology. This was just absolutely perfect for this book. What is also super cool about this book is that it contains several drawings about the plans or maps from the space stations.
Start of the book (4,5 stars)
The beginning of this book was sooo good. I couldn’t stop reading the first 50 pages. It was so involving and written so interesting. I loved when the story started. Everything was clear and I was so excited to see where it was heading. There also was this mysterious twist that I actually didn’t expect because I thought it would be just about this reality show and about space and then when this sentence comes up; I was so shocked! That just brought this book to a whole other level and I loved this twist right in the beginning.
The writing style (2,0 stars)

I think the writing style just wasn’t for me. It was too easy to read, just too childish. The comparisons and descriptions in this book where just very weird and I had to cringe a few times while reading because they often didn’t make sense. Also the nicknames the candidates got; “Red Giant� or “The Machine of Securities� are literally so strange and horrible. I don’t know if that’s because they were literally translated to Dutch or because the writer made them up like this but most off the nicknames weren’t flattering for the candidates.
I found it so daring of Dixen to only do ONE POV from the candidates. I mean when I started I thought this would contain multiple POV’s from every character in the ship, but the only ‘I� POV was Leonor’s. Yeah there also is like a multiple POV from Atlas� board, from the camera and from other people outside the ship but I had expected more from the candidates. I missed the other characters opinion and I think it would have been refreshing and more vivid if more POV’s from candidates where included. It took so long to finally get some inside on the boys, they were really vague characters about three quarters of the book, I hated that I had no idea what was going on over there!
I also feel that sometimes the wrong scenes where included. Most of those got me annoyed because I wanted to continue with the characters on the Cupido. Scenes like the funeral (especially with all the speeches) were just unnecessary and boring. Halfway in the book more pointless characters and storylines kept being added (Harmony’s for example), which was really annoying because it was already confusing with all the speed dates and opinions and lists. I had to browse back in the book a few times to remember who had a date with who and what had happened. But also the amount of unnecessary paragraphs in the dome got me annoyed. Selena had such awkward long speeches and it made me cringe every time. And now I’m mentioning Selena, I know her last name the first time that it is mentioned! It doesn’t need to be repeated every chapter.
I also noted many mistakes in the grammar and language, and even one in a figure. On page 287 in the figure there is no compartment 3 and there are two compartment 6. These typos annoyed the heck out of me!
Later in the book things got a lot better, the unnecessary paragraphs where skiped, not all the speed dates where shown, the pace got faster and we got more inside about the boys. But that could have happened like 150 pages sooner.
The world building (3,0 stars)
The world building wasn’t that special, and this book didn’t need that because the excitement is enough to keep you reading. But some things where a bit weird and could have been worked out in more details. The whole back ground story was about the US having a new president and that they wanted to pay off all the governments debts. Therefore they sold NASA which was bought by this company named Atlas, they decided to make a reality show of the project Mars. Besides that this weird background story was not at all necessary for this book (because I also would have liked just the reality show with some setbacks on its own), it was also not realistic in my opinion. First off all I never in a million years think that the US is going to get rid of NASA. Like remember the whole Cold War thing happening? NASA is such a big thing in the US and I really feel like the US would never get rid of it, even if they would get a zillion dollars for it. And second off all what I just told you about the world building is literally the only thing mentioned in this book about it. I wanted more background, more descriptions, more details. But I also missed important things like what year it was? They had all these advanced technology so they needed to be far in the future. So like I already said this book doesn’t really need this ‘amazing� earthly world building because the majority of it takes place in space. But I just missed a really great foundation where this book could lean back on.
Another thing I found really disturbing was bringing the dogs. Like yeah I’m a big animal person and I always love when they get mixed in a story. But I felt bad for them. I was even wondering if they were trained? And how would you train a dog to respond to no gravity, a situation where they have no control? There was no attention to that at all. They didn’t even know for sure if this colony on Mars was going to succeed, so to bring an animal in the mix and send with the first crew was in my opinion really disrespectful towards the animals. I know I’m overthinking but yeah� Not a fan of bringing the dog on the space adventure.
Main Character (2,5 stars)
Leonore was okay but it isn’t because of her that I want to read the next book. She made an okay character improvement but I did have some problems with her in the beginning. First the salamander story. I liked the fact that the candidates weren’t perfect and that they all had a big flaw. It was interesting to have a main character with skin burns. But I did not like how she handled it and how it was pictured in this book. This book puts it down as something gruesome and hideous, something that destroys life. Instead that the character deals with it and tries to get over it, it leads his own life and gets a f*cking name?! I found that so disturbing and I just don’t agree with that. I also hated how ‘the thing talked back� and made Leonor do things. It was really awkward to read. Besides the Salamander I just didn’t like how Leonor thought during this whole book. She was unpredictable and instable. I didn’t like how she handled things and I couldn’t identify with her because I would never think/do that. She jumps to conclusions and does things without thinking. And though we all do that from time to time hers are things I couldn’t even come up with and she hurts people. But Leonor did make a great character development. I liked the last choice she made and her determination towards the end. She acted really smart and I liked how she stood up for the whole crew to Selena.
Other characters (4,0 stars)
I really liked the different personalities on board of the Cupido and I really liked the interactions they all had. I really enjoyed all the boys and girls, although it took me a long time to figure out who was who and who liked who and who was responsible for what task. It was a bit complicated and overwhelming in the beginning but once I figured it out I really enjoyed them. I really enjoyed Kris and Leonor’s friendship. I found all the flaws really believable and I enjoyed to read how different people dealt with that. Selena was just a perfect villain, you kind of have to hate/love her. She was amazing and flawless. I really enjoyed her two faces and found that working so well in this book. I’m so curious what she will do next and who her pion is!? I did hate the rest of the board off Atlas.. They were all so hypocrite and I hated how they blindly followed Selena. They didn’t have their own opinions and I hated how they talked about the candidates. I have one comment about that, the bathroom mirror’s, that is such a violation of privacy!! I was shocked. And then how they judged Leonor’s body, OMG!
Romance (3,5 stars)
The romance needed to really build in this book. I did really like how we saw all the characters do different things to try to make someone like you. And I really enjoyed all the speed dating. However I really hated the flirting, every line was so cliché that I wanted to pull my hair out! But besides that the relationships got build okay and I’m looking forward to what will happen in the next installment.
Plot (4,5 stars)
This plot was soooo good. I wasn’t really expecting it to be this thrilling when I started this book but it worked out great. I enjoyed the political games that got involved in this book. It was the right pace and I was never annoyed because it was slow. Though there were some chapters I looked more forward to then others.
The ending (4,0 stars)
The tension towards the ending really builds and that’s probably why I read the last 200 pages in one sitting. I just needed to know what would happen and who took the phone!! And I really hate this cliff hanger AHHH! So curious about how the others will respond and what Serena will do about it! NEED BOOK TWO NOW! So excited.
I’d never heard off this book before, but I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for an easy read. One of my guilty pleasures is reality TV so that combined with an awesome space adventure and dirty politics made an really amazing book! This book definitely isn’t flawless but I really enjoyed it and I’m anticipating the sequel.

Five years ago I did a project about the colonization of Mars that's being realized right now. The organization Mars One is finally ready to start training people and sending them to Mars to try and start a colony. So I was super excited when I read that this book would contain a fiction story about a sort like project. I was really interested in how Dixen would combine the reality show with the space adventure.
Design (4,0 stars)
I think the cover is cool! And I really like that the front image actually plays a part in this book (although I don’t like the image that much). I love the stars on the spines and I think the whole cover matches the book well. I also really love the bookmark I got with it that contained all the candidates name, their country and their age. The title is just perfect. It stands for one of the two moons of Mars and for fear in Greek mythology. This was just absolutely perfect for this book. What is also super cool about this book is that it contains several drawings about the plans or maps from the space stations.
Start of the book (4,5 stars)
The beginning of this book was sooo good. I couldn’t stop reading the first 50 pages. It was so involving and written so interesting. I loved when the story started. Everything was clear and I was so excited to see where it was heading. There also was this mysterious twist that I actually didn’t expect because I thought it would be just about this reality show and about space and then when this sentence comes up; I was so shocked! That just brought this book to a whole other level and I loved this twist right in the beginning.
The writing style (2,0 stars)

I think the writing style just wasn’t for me. It was too easy to read, just too childish. The comparisons and descriptions in this book where just very weird and I had to cringe a few times while reading because they often didn’t make sense. Also the nicknames the candidates got; “Red Giant� or “The Machine of Securities� are literally so strange and horrible. I don’t know if that’s because they were literally translated to Dutch or because the writer made them up like this but most off the nicknames weren’t flattering for the candidates.
I found it so daring of Dixen to only do ONE POV from the candidates. I mean when I started I thought this would contain multiple POV’s from every character in the ship, but the only ‘I� POV was Leonor’s. Yeah there also is like a multiple POV from Atlas� board, from the camera and from other people outside the ship but I had expected more from the candidates. I missed the other characters opinion and I think it would have been refreshing and more vivid if more POV’s from candidates where included. It took so long to finally get some inside on the boys, they were really vague characters about three quarters of the book, I hated that I had no idea what was going on over there!
I also feel that sometimes the wrong scenes where included. Most of those got me annoyed because I wanted to continue with the characters on the Cupido. Scenes like the funeral (especially with all the speeches) were just unnecessary and boring. Halfway in the book more pointless characters and storylines kept being added (Harmony’s for example), which was really annoying because it was already confusing with all the speed dates and opinions and lists. I had to browse back in the book a few times to remember who had a date with who and what had happened. But also the amount of unnecessary paragraphs in the dome got me annoyed. Selena had such awkward long speeches and it made me cringe every time. And now I’m mentioning Selena, I know her last name the first time that it is mentioned! It doesn’t need to be repeated every chapter.
I also noted many mistakes in the grammar and language, and even one in a figure. On page 287 in the figure there is no compartment 3 and there are two compartment 6. These typos annoyed the heck out of me!
Later in the book things got a lot better, the unnecessary paragraphs where skiped, not all the speed dates where shown, the pace got faster and we got more inside about the boys. But that could have happened like 150 pages sooner.
The world building (3,0 stars)
The world building wasn’t that special, and this book didn’t need that because the excitement is enough to keep you reading. But some things where a bit weird and could have been worked out in more details. The whole back ground story was about the US having a new president and that they wanted to pay off all the governments debts. Therefore they sold NASA which was bought by this company named Atlas, they decided to make a reality show of the project Mars. Besides that this weird background story was not at all necessary for this book (because I also would have liked just the reality show with some setbacks on its own), it was also not realistic in my opinion. First off all I never in a million years think that the US is going to get rid of NASA. Like remember the whole Cold War thing happening? NASA is such a big thing in the US and I really feel like the US would never get rid of it, even if they would get a zillion dollars for it. And second off all what I just told you about the world building is literally the only thing mentioned in this book about it. I wanted more background, more descriptions, more details. But I also missed important things like what year it was? They had all these advanced technology so they needed to be far in the future. Je ne sais pas ce que j'ai le plus détesté entre la non crédibilité des dialogues, le scénario creux, les facilités de la trame narrative ou les clichés insupportables sur les personnages... L'avantage que ce roman a c'est qu'il se lit très vite, et heureusement ! J'ai passé toute ma lecture à alterner entre me facepalmer, rire très fort et lever les yeux au ciel. Je n'aime pas spécialement laisser des remarques aussi négatives, et c'est d'ailleurs assez rare de ma part puisque j'arrive toujours à trouver du positif, mais là non, désolée c'était juste pas du tout pour moi.

Be prepared for the world’s weirdest yet strangely addictive dating show in the known universe.
I’ve said in previous posts about this book that it was like ‘Love Islandin a spaceship, but with teenagers, segregated living quarters andmuchless sex�. This still feels like a good description, but I think only UK readers would necessarily get it. There is also a little bit of Take Me Out in there. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please, Google is your friend.
Cut down to its core, Ascension is essentially a book about a space dating show, but the author takes that seemingly inane concept adds in questionable moral compasses; intrigue and several closets full of skeletons and ends up with a really compelling sci-fi novel filled with characters and plot-lines you’re left wanting more of.
I ended up really enjoying this book despite the fact that when the concept was first introduced at the start, I thought it wasn’t going to be good, at all. I quickly realised, that though some of my first impression was right (the show's format was a smidge convoluted, I didn’t really see why the two teams couldn’t mix more for good entertainment value, it seemed like an unnecessary barrier, also instant marriage after what could only ever be a maximum of what? 3 hours in each other’s company? � ick), as motives and schemes were revealed I realised that something like this absolutely 100% could happen.
Not so much the space of it all, but you know, never say never, but the carrying out of explicable deeds and exploitation of desperate and damaged young people for money? Yeah, I buy it.
I also like that the characters don’t seem to be fulfilling any racial stereotypes either, it was a refreshing change of pace to be able to get to know each character individually as opposed to painfully obvious archetypes of their country � the Brit wasn’t an etiquette obsessed prudish stickler or a cartoonishly evil villain, yay!
Despite my overall enjoyment, the narrative didn’t always sit well with me. I generally like alternating perspectives and I understand now that everything we saw will likely be a crucial bit of information but, with all the suspense and tension, there were times I really didn’t care for the ‘bad guy parts�. You know the ‘Mwahahahaha, we are the bad guys, let us discuss our evil plot at length in this shady-ass bunker in a dimmed room with a long table, mwahahahahah, go us.� Yeah, that. Some parts were great but I think other parts were a little bit repetitive.
It’s hard to describe the frustration I felt as the plot reached its climax and my e-reader read �98%� at the bottom and I knew I wasn’t going to find out the answers I so, so needed. Needless to say, already pre-ordered the sequel Distortion � also, can we get some appreciation for these awesome covers?!

l'intrigue était prometteuse et j'admets que la fin me donne plutôt envie de lire la suite, mais je suis toujours très mal à l'aise lorsqu'un homme de 40 ans essaie d'écrire sur de jeunes adolescentes... c'est évident que sa représentation de Léonor � et de tout le groupe féminin d'ailleurs � se base sur sa vision de ce que pensent et disent des filles de 18 ans, vision complètement erronée et souvent offensante.
la plume de Victor Dixen peut parfois être très belle, mais les dialogues sont loin d'être naturels et, selon moi, les chapitres du point de vue de Léonor auraient été mieux à la troisième personne ; je pense à l'exemple donné par plusieurs autres critiques : "J'essuie ma poitrine couleur de lait, la seule partie de mon corps que les tâches de rousseur ont oublié d'éclabousser"... non, juste non, absolument aucune femme ne pense ça en se regardant dans le miroir après sa douche ! à la troisième personne, d'accord, mais la première personne rend toute cette phrase ridicule.
enfin, et je ne vais pas m'étendre là-dessus, mais le livre est rempli de stéréotypes sur les différentes nationalités qui m'ont parus légèrement problématiques... disons que c'est facile de deviner que l'auteur est un homme blanc. i mean, le latino qui fait partie d'un gang traffiquant de la drogue, plus stéréotypé tu meurs... et le japonais qui est comparé à un personnage de manga ???
de plus, assez étonnant (non) que parmi les six candidats masculins, Léonor ait comme love interest l'un des deux seuls qui soient blancs... c'était prévisible dès le tout début du livre, mais quand même.

The characters are really interisting, and trough the pages we learn about their backstories. And god, they all have their secrets.
It is always nice seeing some good french YA books. And this one is really good !

I absolutely loved the sound of the synopsis for this book as it sounded like such a fun and relatively lighthearted read. one of my most relaxed and enjoyable of 2018 so far. I feel as if this is science fiction marketed towards the female section of society, as a book based around speed-dating probably appeals more to women than men. Obviously, that is a generalisation, but I am pleased that science fiction writers are attempting to draw more women to the genre.
"Ascension" is the first book in the Phobos series by Victor Dixen. I had no idea that it had been originally written in Dutch and translated into English - usually the sign of a proficient translator, in my opinion. it is not stated who this elusive person is, but kudos to them whoever they are! There was none of that awful clunky language that often finds its way into translated books. It could be categorised as walking the line between a variety of different genres - science fiction and YA spring to mind instantaneously.
The premise is so intriguing! Six boys and six girls fill the separate bays on a single spaceship. They are granted six minutes each week in which to seduce each other, all under the watchful gaze of the on-board cameras. They are the contenders in the Genesis programme, the world's craziest speed-dating show ever, aimed at creating the first human colony on Mars.
I thoroughly enjoyed the space setting and the interesting plot. It was well written/translated and there were some great plot twists. The ending is executed perfectly, making you want to read the next one in the series. I have added it to my TBR list and hope it is translated and published in the not-so-distant future. There were a couple of parts where the plot seemed to slow, but it quickly returned to normal. The different points-of-view offered varying perspectives of the same story.
Another fact I missed was that this was actually published in June 2015 (the Dutch version I presume) and a further three books in the series were subsequently published in November 2015, November 2016 and November 2017 respectively, yet to be translated and released in English.

"Ascension" is the first book in the Phobos series by Victor Dixen. I had no idea that it had been originally written in Dutch and translated into English - usually the sign of a proficient translator, in my opinion. it is not stated who this elusive person is, but kudos to them whoever they are! There was none of that awful clunky language that often finds its way into translated books. It could be categorised as walking the line between a variety of different genres - science fiction and YA spring to mind instantaneously.
The premise is so intriguing! Six boys and six girls fill the separate bays on a single spaceship. They are granted six minutes each week in which to seduce each other, all under the watchful gaze of the on-board cameras. They are the contenders in the Genesis programme, the world's craziest speed-dating show ever, aimed at creating the first human colony on Mars.
I thoroughly enjoyed the space setting and the interesting plot. It was well written/translated and there were some great plot twists. This book really surprised me. I had seen it referred to as Love Island in space and that was an interesting enough hook to spur me into entering the giveaway. Then once I picked it up, I was as captivated as the audience, I couldn't get enough of Léonor. And that ending left me desperately wanting more.
Ascension is a fantastic examination of the greed of humanity, the fascination with reality TV, the power of passion, and the crush of impostor syndrome. It picks apart society's perceptions of beauty, it goes under the surface to scrutinise what people are at their core. And it does it all amazingly.
The story is addictive and fast paced. I could not put it down and I wanted it to be longer, it really is a page-turner. It did take me a little while to get used to the writing style - the story is very much driven by the interactions between the characters rather than the plot itself. I know this won't be for everyone, but for me it fitted the story perfectly.

Pour l'instant, je le note 3,5/5 même si je pense que ça restera comme ça... Si les demi-étoiles existaient sur GR, ça nous faciliterait la vie. Je ne me suis pas sentie d'arrondir à 4 parce que j'ai été dérangée par pas mal de choses. Néanmoins, le livre m'a effectivement captivée à partir de l'acte II et j'ai bien accroché à certaines idées, à certains aspects... et à d'autres, beaucoup moins.
Je pense que le fait que tout le monde a eu des coups de coeur pour ce livre, j'ai mis la barre très très haute. Non pas que ce soit la faute du livre, tant mieux s'il plaît à tant de monde. Mais j'avais dans l'idée que ce livre serait pour moi aussi un put*in de coup de coeur, que ça allait presque être une révélation... et puis finalement, bah non.
Ça reste une bonne lecture que je recommande, sans pour autant la mettre dans mes favoris. Il est clair en tout cas que j'attends la suite avec une certaine impatience, parce que ce cliffhanger était pas mal du tout !

Do you ever read a book and quickly realize you don't understand the raving reviews at all? And not because of a taste difference, but because the book is just really that bad? Yeah. This is one of those. I generally try to write at least something positive about every book, but I just can't in this case. What a shitshow of a novel. I didn't enjoy it at all, and not just because the characters and the plot were all very flat, with a massive lack of world building. I had so many issues with it it's not even funny. It was full of objectifying and stereotyping statements, and some particularly ableist comments about the boy with presumed autism felt like a punch to the gut. ("Why would they choose an autistic person for this mission?" Really? Thanks a lot Victor Dixen.) (I read the Dutch translation so my translation may not be entirely accurate but that was the gist of it.) So yeah, I'm not even going to try and look for redeeming qualities.

As soon as I heard about this book, I was intrigued. What a mix of genres! I love cross-genre books. In this one we get science fiction, with romance (reality tv romance, just to be specific) and also a whole of suspense. I was so excited to crack this one open, and it did not disappoint.
I found the concept to be so unique and well executed. On top of that, the book had such a diverse cast. The tv series that the book is focused around decided to have contestants from all over the world, which meant we got a lot of different cultures represented in this one. I also really liked that we have a scarred character and a wheelchair user/paralytic in this book. So, it definitely ticked those boxes for me. The scarred character and her insecurities are quite centric to the romance storyline of the novel.
I also really liked how the author gradually built up suspense and intrigued as he dropped hints about sinister intentions. The further into the book we get, the quicker we realise that this series and the whole project is not entirely what it seems. It takes a while before we get the unveil, and I was hooked turning pages to find out what it would be.
At times, I will say that this book gets a little expositional. It also does a lot of head hopping, so we see quite a few point of views. I didn’t mind flickering from person to person, but I thought I would mention it in case that’s something that you particularly like or don’t like.
I also liked the representation of the reality tv series. I am not someone who watches reality tv. But it was intriguing to see how contestants that were determined not to let the game affect them in any way slowly got sucked into the commercialism, capitalism and competition. It felt very realistic. And this book also mixes political figures and celebrities in a way that seems very becoming of modern day. Interesting�
I have to admit that at one point it did get a little slow in the middle. The beginning of the novel was full of urgency and suspense, and then the end had me shooketh. The stakes were so very high. But in the middle, while it was interesting, did not compare to the rest of the pacing of the book.
The cliffhanger at the end though!! It took has me ready to open the second book and see where this story is going to go. Because man, do these character have a lot to reckon with in their pressing future�
Oh, and if we are going to talk about the romance, I was adamant that I wasn’t going to focus on that side of the story. But like the characters resistant to the game that eventually got caught up in it, I eventually got caught up shipping Leonor and her choice. I didn’t expect to become a romance shipper while reading this but I did ;.;

OMG dat einde! Ik ben echt in shock door de plotselinge manier waarop Phobos eindigt. Het boek is een goede combinatie van liefde en spanning, maar het duurt wel even voor het spannende gedeelte op gang komt. Het boek gaat af en toe iets te traag en veel van de uitgezette verhaallijnen zijn een inleiding op een groter geheel. Phobos roept meer vragen op dan dat je antwoorden krijgt. Toch ben ik enorm benieuwd naar het vervolg! Ik wil weten hoe het verder gaat met de twaalf kandidaten aan boord van de Cupido. De schrijfstijl is trouwens fantastisch, zeker in combinatie met de hoofdstukken die de televisiebeelden beschrijven en de toffe afbeeldingen.

Pretty cover (aai aai) waarachter een spannend verhaal schuilt dat verrassend origineel op me overkwam, maar het hoofdpersonage en de schrijfstijl (Met! heel! veel! uitroeptekens!) lagen me niet zo. Je merkt vooral echt dat het door een vent is geschreven. Een vent die tienermeisjes een beetje als domme, oppervlakkige schepseltjes ziet. Dat zijn minpuntjes waarvoor ik 1 sterretje aftrek, want qua plot en setting vond ik het helemaal top, met zo veel onverwachte wendingen en intriges like whuuut! Ik heb er dus al met al zeker van genoten (snel uit ook!) en het eindigt op een fameuze 'we want more'-manier! Conclusie: aanrader, jazeker!

Une histoire prenante et addictive, une trame complexe, un récit volontairement cinématographique : les clés de ce roman atypique, premier tome d'une duologie.
Cependant, des dialogues souvent trop explicatifs et donc peu crédibles ont déservi le roman.
J'ai néanmoins hâte de connaître le dénouement de cette intrigue.

Ce premier tome a été une bonne découverte et une bonne lecture. Des manques et des longueurs se sont fait ressentir, d'autres points négatifs se sont manifestés, mais mon avis tend nettement vers le positif et j'ai refermé le roman avec l'envie de lire le tome 2. D'autant plus que la fin n'est pas sympa, sympa.

Une très bonne lecture pour ma part. L'écriture de l'auteur est très agréable à lire et on ne s'ennuie pas. Aussi j'ai beaucoup aimé être transportée dans l'univers de l'espace qui me captive tant. J'ai hâte de connaître la suite des événements.

Que d'explosions ! Que d'étincelles ! Décidément, j'enchaîne les coups de cœur et les lectures passionnantes ces derniers temps. PHOBOS est un des romans les plus addictifs et saisissants que j'ai eu la chance de lire dans ma vie. Vraiment, je n'écris pas ça pour exagérer ou vous impressionner, c'est tout simplement un constat : PHOBOS provoque chez nous une frénésie juste incontrôlable. J'ai été irrésistiblement happé par l'imagination de l'auteur et la réalité dans laquelle il a décidé de nous entraîner. Tous les complots et les surprises qui nous attendent dans cette histoire m'ont coupé le souffle et m'ont laissé bouche bée. Je ressors de ma lecture avec une immense sensation de vide : J'AI BESOIN DE LA SUITE MAINTENANT. Patienter jusqu'à la sortie du tome 2 va être une véritable torture.
Le truc qui m'a le plus frappé en entamant ma lecture, c'est la facilité avec laquelle Victor Dixen nous fait entrer dans son récit. Le truc, c'est que l'auteur parvient, avec ses mots, à nous faire glisser dans un tout autre univers sans que nous en ayons conscience. C'est une sensation absolument divine. A chaque fois que je reprenais le roman pour avancer dans l'intrigue, je déconnectais complètement du monde réel. Sa plume est tout bonnement passionnante et enivrante. On se laisse perdre dans chaque mot, chaque rebondissement et chaque émotion avec un plaisir incommensurable. Je n'avais pas ressenti une telle chose depuis des mois. J'étais ailleurs, tout simplement, et c'était à la fois grisant et exaltant.
Pour tout vous dire, je ne reproche absolument rien à cette histoire. J'ai tout adoré. Le seul petit bémol (qui ne m'empêche pourtant pas d'attribuer 5/5 au livre, ce qui signifie VRAIMENT qu'il est génial) que je pourrais souligner, c'est peut-être le manque d'approfondissement de chaque personnage, essentiellement du côté des filles. Comme nous passons l'exclusivité du temps de leur côté de l'aventure, j'ai trouvé que l'auteur aurait pu les rendre encore plus épaisses et s'arrêter plus longtemps sur leur caractère respectif. Léonor, l'héroïne, est indéniablement le protagoniste le mieux décrit, mais j'aurais aimé que toutes les autres candidates suivent ce modèle. On en apprend assez sur elles pour les distinguer et nous faire une idée de qui elles sont vraiment, mais j'aurais aimé en savoir davantage. Néanmoins, et c'est précisément ce qu'il faut retenir, je suis tellement tombé amoureux de cette histoire que ce point noir est vraiment minuscule. Je cherche un peu la petite bête, pour être sincère.
En effet, l'univers de PHOBOS est tellement riche, tellement dense, tellement palpitant et tellement fascinant qu'on en oublie le manque de détails au sujet des personnages féminins. Je vous assure que je n'ai jamais été autant saisi et à bout de souffle à cause d'un roman. Les rebondissements s'enchaînent à une vitesse et avec une cohérence incroyable. Tout est logique et s'imbrique parfaitement dans le retournement de situation précédent. C'est fou, délirant et tellement, tellement jouissif. Les coups de théâtre sont tous plus énormes et palpitants les uns que les autres, l'intrigue est tellement tordue et oppressante qu'elle en devient magnifique et extraordinaire. On veut sans cesse en savoir plus, sans cesse voir comment les choses vont évoluer, sans cesse avoir le souffle coupé. Encore et encore. Encore et encore. Parce que c'est précisément ce que PHOBOS provoque en nous : l'impression d'étouffer, d'être au bord du précipice sans jamais franchir la limite. Dès lors, ce sentiment devient comme une drogue et on ne peut plus s'en passer. Le seul moyen d'y remédier ? Lire, lire, lire et lire encore. C'est pourquoi j'ai dévoré PHOBOS en moins d'une journée. Cette histoire est juste époustouflante et dévastatrice. On se prend au jeu d'être à la fois le lecteur dans la vie réelle et le spectateur à l'intérieur du roman. J'avais l'impression d'assister à chaque programmation depuis mon canapé, pour être clair. L'aventure de PHOBOS se vit plus qu'elle ne se lit. C'est une véritable expérience sensorielle et c'est aussi déroutant que démentiel.
Jusqu'à la dernière page, l'auteur nous en fait voir de toutes les couleurs. La conclusion du récit est explosive, volcanique et ravageuse. J'ai besoin d'en connaître plus et de découvrir ce qui va advenir des douze personnages dont je viens à peine de faire la rencontre. Les ultimes pages sont un vrai tsunami de révélations, de trahisons et de retournements de situation tout juste renversants. Victor Dixen nous en met plein la vue et je pense qu'il doit tirer un plaisir malsain à nous torturer. Nous laisser sur une fin pareille, c'est juste cauchemardesque d'après moi. C'est un final en apothéose que nous offre ici l'auteur et je dois bien avouer que si son but était de me donner envie de m'endormir jusqu'à l'arrivée du tome 2 en novembre, il a réussi son pari haut la main. Je veux juste aller me cacher dans une grotte, attendre que le temps passe et me jeter sur la suite de cette histoire. Quelle fin !
En résumé, PHOBOS est un coup de cœur. C'est un roman haletant, grandiose et exceptionnel. Même si j'aurais apprécié en savoir plus sur les autres personnages, j'ai adoré Léonor, le concept brillant et parfaitement maîtrisé de cette superbe intrigue et la plume hyper addictive de Victor Dixen. Je crois qu'il va me falloir un peu de temps pour redescendre sur Terre et pouvoir me concentrer sur ma prochaine lecture tant j'ai l'esprit encore embrumé par cette histoire juste incroyable. Un récit spectaculaire sur lequel je vous recommande de vous jeter sans plus attendre !

I really enjoyed reading this book! In this SciFi YA, the SciFi really plays a big part in the storyline. This is how I like it, not like , which is basically a love story just set in a space station. Phobos has a much better plot line.
It really is possible that we pay for a travel to mars by making it commercial. And about a president that has sold everything the governments own.. well, I'm not going to state something about possible American presidents.
The story line reminds a bit of , so if you've enjoyed that series and you like SciFi, I recommend this book!
But if you've read this, you might wonder why I've only rated it 3*. While I was reading, it felt like a 4* fun book. Not amazingly, but better than average. But a lot of things in the writing style feels a bit cheap. like how the bad boys are talking to each other in detail about the plans everybody already knows, this is purely to inform the reader. And I know there is a sequel coming, but that does not mean you can leave the ending open like THAT. It does however makes me want to read the second book right now.

Ik werd meteen in het verhaal getrokken en het boeide me enorm, ook dankzij de meerdere perspectieven. Je leest niet alleen vanuit het hoofdpersonage Léonor in de ik-vorm, je krijgt ook een kijkje achter de schermen van het televisieprogramma. Bovendien worden de zes minuten durende ontmoetingen beschreven in het boek, vanuit de 3e-persoon en daardoor krijg je een goed algemeen beeld.
Helaas gaat het verhaal alleen over de reis. Je weet nog niet hoe het is als ze op Mars aankomen, het gaat echt specifiek om de ontmoetingen tussen de jongens en de meisjes. Zoals de achterflaptekst ook beschrijft, gebeurt er ook iets anders: Léonor doet ontdekkingen waardoor haar droom in een nachtmerrie verandert. Helaas komen die pas in de laatste 100 pagina’s goed aan bod.
Het einde is daardoor wel echt ontzettend spannend en het boek eindigt met een gigantische cliffhanger. Gelukkig verschijnt Phobos 2 waarschijnlijk in het voorjaar van 2017!

Waouuuh !! Cette intrigue est tellement bonne. Avec un plot qui a fait chavirer mon Coeur de YA Sci-fi addict � impossible de résister !
Ce livre est tellement brilliant, de la couverture au texte de présentation en passant par l’histoire� Une dinguerie� C’est tout simplement génial !
J'ai aimé Léonor. Elle est fougueuse et impétueuse, mais elle est aussi la seule à avoir des réserves sur toute cette expérience. Elle est logique quand il s'agit de décisions.
Victor Dixen présente toujours des héroines bien déterminées qui livrent une vision très sensée à travers des yeux non romantiques. J’adore !
Le rythme est très bien pensé, avec énormément de suspense mais aussi quelques accalmies pour reprendre son souffle.
J'ai apprécié les jeux politiques qui sont impliqués dans ce livre. On ne s’ennuie pas une seconde et la tension monte tellement vers la fin, on a juste besoin de savoir ce qui allait se passer !
Si vous vous lancez dans cette aventure, assurez-vous d’avoir le second tome, car le cliffhanger est absolument insupportable !

Dans le premier tome, on se retrouve vraiment plongé dans une télé réalité futuriste avec tout ce qui se cache dessous, les magouilles, l’argent. L’univers est vraiment dingue : les connaissances de l’auteur sur l’espace font qu’on arrive totalement à s’imaginer dans cette navette spatiale qui emmène les douze sur Mars. Le personnage principal, Léonor, est vraiment badass et j’ai adoré découvrir son histoire. J’ai également beaucoup aimé le personnage de Marcus.
Le fait que d’un chapitre à l’autre on passe du point de vue de Léonor dans le vaisseau spatial et du point de vue de ce qu’il se passe en parallèle sur Terre, c’est vraiment très intéressant, mais aussi stressant car on se rend vite compte que l’on sait du coup des choses que les douze ne savent pas.
J’ai été très emballée par le premier tome, si bien que dès que je l’ai terminé, j’ai enchainé de suite avec le deuxième... !
Le fait que d’un chapitre à l’autre on passe du point de vue de Léonor dans le vaisseau spatial et du point de vue de ce qu’il se passe en parallèle sur Terre, c’est vraiment très intéressant, mais aussi stressant car on se rend vite compte que l’on sait du coup des choses que les douze ne savent pas.

Je rejoins la team qui a adoré ce livre. Il est vraiment original à mes yeux la conquête de Mars sous fond de téléréalité est bien trouvée et bien exploitée avec le champ, hors champ, contrechamp. J'ai aimé le personnage de Léonor qui est très humaine malgré tout.
J'ai juste un bémol, je n'ai pas compris la mise en avant de certain personnage comme la fille de la productrice et j'ai attendu un certain évènement très longtemps.
J'ai donc adoré et je conseille beaucoup ce livre
