JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER of "CONVERSATIONS WITH THE DEAD" returns with an ALL-NEW SERIES! In this sci-fi/horror saga, Corinne White attempts to reconcile with the ghosts of her violent past, literally, as she trudges through a world of dystopian cityscapes, reanimated corpses, & ganglands full of animal human hybrids.
First off, the artwork is amazing. Very dark and ominous, with sprawling colour schemes that fit well with the comic's noir leanings. The writing isn't moving, the third act was a bit deus ex machina like, that fight between Corinne and the robot. Not very convincing. Still the lab full of carcasses, that's bound to open up some interesting story arcs in later issues.
Maybe it's just cause it's been a second since I read anything, but the cyber punk aestetic didn't come across as exhausting. Likely because the art is so trippy and surreal. And the ghost aspect adds a unique flavor you don't see in these kinds of narratives.
I like the pace as well- instead of wasting our time having a protagonist and antagonist chit chat at a table desperately trying to conjure up tension, it instead narrates over it and feels like we're experiencing a diary through the surreal eyes of a nightmare. (Or a really twisted dream).
This is definitely an experience worth embarking on if you have the right ambience in the background. I suggest some night time Skyrim ambience as a loving compliment to all this stark imagery.
Blend one part Jason Bourne with one part Tank Girl, toss in a dash of Blade Runner, garnish with something that looks a little like lezploitation and serve on fire. Not bad. Not great, but not bad.
Had no idea that one of my favorite artists -Jason Shawn Alexander - was also a comic illustrator. The way he situates his panels forces the reader to engage in ways I've never seen in a comic before. Really incredible art and great writing.
It jumps right in. Grabs you. Then you look around and wonder WTF is happening. Is this real? Which is pretty much the main characters sitch right there.
Enough glimpses into Corrines past to keep us confused but also interested. The artwork is gritty and rough, very fitting for the tone. I think I'll like this series
Beautiful artwork. Just spectacular. Solid entry into the dystopian genre, with believable power-politics, and characters who not only bend gender, but species. Nothing too new, but I'll keep reading
I like the artwork. The story has a ghost in the shell feel that I can get behind. Some scenes were brutal, anybody that doesnt like gore shouldnt read this. good start to the story
