If a cat is called Mouse, it’s bound to make small children laugh. But Patti Tingen’s picture book, A Cat Named Mouse, invites children and their guardians to see life through the eyes of a mis-named, easily-teased animal, and offers wise lessons in friendship.
The illustrations are bright and clear, giving a great sense of the action, from dog rolling in mirth on the ground, to cat preparing to pounce. The writing is quick and light too, nicely designed on the page, with a pleasing mix of text, dialog and rhyme. Bright colors emphasize words that might soon have a small child reading along. And scenes straight from the lives of children have the teased learning to tease, while a kind mouse cries “Enough!... Try to be kind...�

I'm not generally big on children's books, but this is a winner! Beautifully illustrated, and with witty rhyming prose, this is just purrrfect for children for any age, and for many adults I suspect! Well done, Patti, this is a simple story with a very powerful message for our times - what's in a name, just respect the differences and we can all be friends!

A Cat Named Mouse, written by Patti Tingen with art by Mary Erickson Washam, is a charming story about just that -- a cat named Mouse, as well as a mouse named Cheese and other seemingly misnamed characters.
As our story begins, we meet Mouse who has just moved into a new neighborhood. Anxious to find his new best friend, like any adventurous cat, Mouse approaches the dog next-door. But it turns out that the dog is something of a bully. He laughs at Mouse and makes fun of our poor cat, who returns home sad, confused and even lonelier. Not too long after, however, Mouse meets Cheese, a very smart little mouse. The two become friends, and Cheese teaches Mouse some important lessons about bullies and bullying.
Patti Tingen is best known for her award-winning inspirational books and talks for adults. In her first children's picture book, she proffers her message of acceptance and appreciation for everyone, while illustrating how bullying is hurtful and, perhaps more importantly, can cause a cycle of bullying. In A Cat Named Mouse, Ms. Tingen teaches young children about the value and purpose of each individual and the importance of understanding and acceptance of others and ourselves. She accomplishes this without being didactic but rather by engaging and maintaining a preschooler's attention with an entertaining story.
What I like best about this book is the creative way Ms. Tingen teaches complex lessons in a simple, comprehensible story appropriate to preschoolers. What I like least about A Cat Named Mouse is how quickly Mouse and Cheese become friends and Mouse learns the lessons being taught. I recognize that, given her target audience, Ms. Tingen needed to keep the story succinct, but I don't think another page or two would be detrimental.

This is a sweet little story about, well, a cat named Mouse! In fact, there are a few more animal characters with some odd names. That is the whole point of the book, for children to discover no matter who they are, or what their name might be, they are still special and have some to offer.
Even though this book is 32 pages long, it is mostly a picture book. I would have actually have liked to have seen some more story line. I thought this would be a great opportunity to address the issue of bullying and maybe what the "friends" did after they finally go over themselves. Is that in a second book perhaps? I did feel it ended abruptly.
The illustrations were very cute, large, and colorful. I enjoyed them and thought they were great for the book as a whole.
I look forward to some more children's books from this author. This was her first in this genre.
I cannot give the book 5 stars for the reason I think above but it still is a good enough book to receive the 4 stars I am giving it!

I have just read the cutest lesson about bullying I have ever encountered. Yes, you read that right. The cutest tale about bullying. A Cat Named Mouse by Patti Tingen shows young children in first and second grade how picking on someone because of their name is wrong. You see this as Mouse (a cat) goes looking for his very first friend who turns out to be a mouse named Cheese. These characters work together to take care of the neighborhood bully: a mean dog.
Ms. Tingen uses animals with which elementary children learn several good values. She uses her story to help parents instill kindness, friendliness, and compassion with just a few swift, but humorous actions. Children everywhere will have no trouble liking this teaching tool.
The artwork of Mary Erikson Washam is beautiful. The characters are lively and cute. Each character has a personality that shines. She adds a delightful flavor to the story.

"A Cat Named Mouse" is a tale of making new friends, overcoming insecurities, and embracing self-acceptance. In particular, it teaches children that making fun of someone's name can be hurtful. The dog is the story overcompensates for the insecurity he has about his name by teasing the cat for his name. In the end, the characters learn that it's better to be welcome others with open arms than to tease them. This book is a fun story with bright colors and many rhyming words. A great story for young readers with an importance message of kindness.
