From a New York Times–bestselling author, a woman goes under the protection of her high school crush when the only family she has left is murdered. After J. D. Garrison broke her adolescent heart when he skipped town years ago, Denver McCallahan’s only link to country music’s “brightest starâ€ was the supermarket tabloids. But when her uncle Max is murdered, J.D. comes waltzing back into her life—sweeping her off her feet and warning her away from his former best friend, Pete—who’d helped Denver dry her teenage tears. Caught between the man who stood by her and the one who broke her heart, Denver will have to find out which man she can trustÌý.Ìý.Ìý. and which man is a killer.
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
Sometimes I love the corny crazy that is romance novels. This one was just too corny and not very sexy/romantic. The plot and it is a humdinger is that our female lead, Denver yep that's her name The name Denver does not make me think irresistible woman it makes me think
But no worries Denver goes by the nickname Denny,so there is no connection with anything else unsexy with the name Denny
Anyway its just a name so moving on, Denny's... I mean Denny was in love with JD when she was 16 and instead of returning her affections JD leaves town to follow his country music dreams (snicker). Pete was best friends with JD, was and is in love with Denny. So now 8 years later Denny's uncle is killed and circumstances are fishy so Denny's aunt calls JD in to protect Denny and maybe help solve this mystery. Oh! I forgot in his time away JD has become a huge Country music star, he is super famous and wins grammys and dates models and other superstars,so definitely has not kept in touch. So can you picture a country superstar and I don't know country music so I was gonna say Keith Urban but he does not wear a hat and JD's cowboy hat is like a character in this story its mentioned so much. After a quick google search it seems Brad Paisley is our man. So can you picture Brad Paisley
leaving Nashville to go to his hometown to solve a murder mystery and protect an old girlfriend and take the law into his own hands? Cause I can't. The whole time I was like "you don't need this, you are a superstar with lots of money, don't take her shit" also he gets beat up.... a lot. I think Brad Paisley would have hung up his hat and been like "I got models in my swimming pool waiting for me" but I don't know Country music so maybe this is all very realistic and I am just not well versed in this stuff. But this fell super flat for me. Corny quote of the book (of which there were many) After Jd and Denny share a passionate kiss, JD says"I just want to protect you,I will always keep you safe" and Denny says "I am just worried Country music will call you away before we can solve Uncle Max's murder" Fucking amazing stuff
Disclaimer:I do not know anything about Brad Paisley and if he did solve a murder mystery and get the girl well.... good on him.
3 Stars ~ J.D. left his small-town behind when he was 18, to see if he really had talent as a singer-songwriter. It had been all he dreamed about, but it meant he had to leave 16 year old Denver behind. Nine years have passed, and J.D.'s made it in to the big-times; everyone in the nation knows who J.D. Garrison is. When he gets word that Denver's uncle Max, the man who helped him get his start, has been murdered, he decides he's long overdue for a return trip home. Denver knows there's something sinister going on, something her uncle, a private detective, stumbled on. The sheriff insists Max was murdered by a hitchhiker and refuses to listen to Denver, so she decides she has to find the truth out by herself. J.D. won't let her jump into danger by herself, especially when it looks like their old friend Pete seems to be part of the mystery. But Denver's wary of J.D., he left her behind and she's never really gotten over him.
This is Ms. Daniels' debut. While I'm not usually a huge fan of reunion romances but when you throw in some lovely murder and intrigue into the mix it's definitely up my ally. Harlequin Intrigues are more suspense driven than romance, and this story holds true to that form. Ms. Daniels kept the tension high, did a pretty good job twisting the plot and holding the mystery as to who exactly were the bad guys. While not as polished as her later books, her debut was very enjoyable, and her writing voice refreshing.
J D came back for Max's funeral. He was on a hill with Maggie instead of at the funeral. Maggie said that Max would understand, she prefer red to remember him as living. J D had left town after high school to try to break into music. This was the first time back. Denver was determined to find her Uncle's killer. The Deputy Sheriff was determined it was a drifter that Uncle Max had helped out earlier. Great story with many twists and turns. Great characters.
This book was included in the original book of "The waterfall", by Carla Neggers. To my surprise this book was much more intriguing than that of the Authur Neggers. I found this book had a little more grit and it kept my attention. I was really eager to continue reading it, because the plot dealt with a who done it, while grouped in with a long ago love story that is rekindled. This book had mystery, love and a little more action. I enjoyed reading this book and I think this author had a better definition of the characters in this book.
Odd Man Out B.J. Daniels So many twists and turns that have you just as confused as Denver and J.D. are as try to solve the murder of Denver’s Uncle Max. Who can they trust? Are friends turncoats? A throughly riveting book that has you hooked from the very beginning to the end.
The action takes off from the beginning. Denny has already buried both parents; now she has to bury. Max. She believes he was murdered and not by who the police think. He and J.D. are thrown into dangerous situations. It climaxes near the end. The bad guys are not who I thought.
Well so far I have not read a BJ Daniels book that I have not liked. This book was awesome. Kept you on the edge of your seat and guessing the whole time. Thanks for a great read
