The Wright Brothers #1

Getting Schooled

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition of ASIN B01AIS80FK

When 26 year old Reese accepts a position as a grad assistant, she has no idea an unpleasant encounter with a student will lead to the discovery of what she calls “the trifecta: fine, intellectual, and a little bit rude three qualities she finds irresistible in a man. She has no intention of doing anything with that discovery nothing long term, at least. But everybody knows what happens to best laid plans.
Jason is a grown man. 28 years old, seasoned and scarred by his real-life experience in the world, he’s at Blakewood State University to finish his degree and move on. The last thing he’s interested in is the female population on campus but sexy, infuriating Reese might be a notable exception.
This isn’t a story of opposites attract.
More like counterparts clash.
Neither of them is afraid to do battle, and neither is willing to back down. Love and war, win or lose somebody’s gonna end up getting schooled.

I’ve had this on my kindle TBR for the longest time and finally managed to get round to it. I had the best time listening to this on audio. The narrators really made this story work.

I love how CCJ seems to introduce her characters. There’s always more to them than what meets the eye even though your first impressions of them might not be the best.

Speaking of first impressions, our couple did not like each other. They assumed the worst of each other because of an accidental run in they had.
One thing they did have in common though was their attraction.

I loved seeing that attraction grow even further alongside us uncovering their personalities and hidden scars.

Jason was so damn attractive! 😭
Not only was this fictional man fine looking as hell, but he got me intellectually going and I loved side that side to him. He’s also a militant man who wears a prosthetic leg after having it amputated. It was so normalised in this book and that was awesome to read b

Reese was such a snarky and emotional heroine. She was someone who very much craved connection but also rebuffed emotions because they made her uncomfortable. The loss of her father had a lot to do with that and I felt for her so deeply.

The humour was just great all round. Between the couple, their parents, the friend group and the sibling trio were following in this series. I laughed out loud several times.

I can’t wait for more. 😍

CW: loss of a parent(s), grief, panic attack.

Awwww!!! See...this is why I read the kinds of books I do. For this feeling I have right now after finishing this novel. *group hug* everyone!

This book deserves 5 stars for the hysterical banter between all the characters alone. I think I dropped the kindle several times just to have a good cackle. Also, the dialogue felt very familiar. Being in Reece's world was almost like having an animated conversation with one of your best girlfriends. And she happens to say some off the wall stuff every once in a while. And you crack up cuz she's an absolute mess. But the witty banter didn't end with the main characters. Reese's mother and her BFF had me in absolute stitches. There were so many quotable one-liners I practically have the entire book highlighted. I want to know all if these characters in real life. And that's a mean thing to do to me CCJ because these folks don't actually exist!

But if that weren't enough, there was an incredible amount of heart in this story. Reese and Jason both experienced some major losses in their world and it allowed them to connect on a deeper level. Interestingly enough, none of this detracted from the overall levity of the story.

I had a wonderful read with this one. Also, it's been great seeing everyone's status updates as they read. I mean...tears. Y'all are a fantastic mess and I love it.

“I let you think you’re handling me.
“Nah, I let you think you’re not getting handled.

Getting Schooled was my first book by Christina C. Jones and I’m a fan. I can’t wait to continue on with this series and get to the rest of the Wright Brothers.

I love new adult/college age romance but this one was a little difference. It took place at a college, but the students were older than your typical college student. The TA, Reese, is twenty six, and her student, Jason, is twenty eight.

I loved the banter between Reese and Jason. What started out as a strong attraction/enemies to lovers turned into so much more. This couple was a bit older and more mature and knew what they wanted out of life and each other. I was so happy when they finally got together. I also loved the little side romance with their parents.

This was a fun and steamy read the audio was great. I’m excited to read more by this author!

This was so fun! First, I loved how our characters were older in college and that Reese was a TA for her mom's class. It was so cute how she kind of fell for Jason just through his writing before she even met him. I loved the sort of hate to love they had going on and how they loved to banter with one another. So cute! This did get more serious near the end with Jason and Reese dealing with emotional pasts and helping each other get through that. I also loved how Jason had a prosthetic leg! I don't see that ever in the romances I read, so I loved how he appreciated Reese treating him normally instead of like someone who constantly needed help. Overall, I loved the couple's banter and how they slowly fell for one another!

I’ve been reading this over the last few months as a way to be like ‘see, I’m still reading novels! 😬

I really liked these characters. I loved the depth they were given and the attitude! The story’s pacing was good until it hit the final chapters. And I only really mean how quickly they talk about ‘love and ‘forever.

The steamy scenes were good too. I think the first one was the best.

I love how Reese and Jason truly had their own personalities. Their parents were hilarious, not to mention well written!
I felt like the best friend was kind of cliche but we don’t spend too much time with her.

I’ve never read a story that includes an amputee so this was pretty insightful.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and these characters. There were many times where I had a grin on my face.
I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another Christina C. Jones book.

ORIGINAL REVIEW

I think its safe to say that I and many others have been feigning for movies with Black characters that aren't crooks, robbers, drug dealers or slaves... I've also been searching for BOOKS with Black people who aren't baby mommas, hood rats, round the way girls, drug dealers, king pins, mobsters or just plain fuck boys.... I've been searching all year and I've come across a number of close calls... The majority of those being centering around interracial couples. Which is fine, I have nothing against that, do you boo... But that's not what I was looking for.

And then I came across Christina C Jones. I swear if it wasn't weird I would KISS her right now because, THIS BOOK! Everything I was searching for and everything I never dreamed I could have. A black romance that felt authentic, was engrossing, swoon worthy and most of all depicted the everyday black folk that is rarely ever shown in the movies or TV shows. accurate representation is so important and Christina delivered and then delivered.

Getting Schooled is about Reese who is a 26-year-old graduate student, working towards a creative writing degree to inspire and nurture the minds of people who feel stifled and smothered by curriculum, proper technique and rules. She is a graduate assistant in her mom's Modern Black Literature course which is where she bumps into Jason Wright, literally. A 28-year-old war vet, pursuing a Masters in mechanical engineering with a focus on Automotives. He's smart, handsome, assertive and woke and they cannot stand one another.

Aren't those the best books though! The will they won't they dynamic. And even though you KNOW they will it's still fun to watch them go through the motions. Reese and Jason's banter and back and forth literally had me smirking and smiling for 85% of the book. I couldn't take the feels but I wanted more with every page I turned. I just loved this book!

I loved that it was a black romance but there was more than just their relationship at the forefront. Reese and Jason both have issues that stem from troubled pasts and it plays a role in their lives and relationships and it's always a nice touch when authors throw in a little deep with the sweet.

I think what I loved most about this book was it didn't feel contrived. There have been a couple books I've read with affluent black characters and it just seemed extra. They were astronauts with helicopters and limos, butlers and maids, private jets and islands and I'm just like NO ONE needs all that lol. Reese and Jason were just them. Working towards bettering their lives and careers, wanting to be around good friends and family and just living their lives. They owned their own houses, and sure Reese had a purple Audi, but when you work hard you should be able to play hard too...but it was REAL. it felt real and attainable. Not saying there can't be a black astronaut with private jets and islands but again. WHO NEEDS ALL OF THAT!

Anyway....THANKFULLY there is another book in this series that features Jasons brother who is a doctor and Reese's best-friend who is studying to be a doctor and just look at black excellence at its finest. My hope is that this book was not a fluke, that ALL of Christina's books are just as amazing as this and that Amazon or ŷ will recommend some like authors and books so I don't have to rely on just ONE person to fulfill my ever growing need and desire to see myself represented in the entertainment I consume.

Reccomendation: Black, white, brown, or green, this is a great romance novel that ANYONE can enjoy and you should definitely check it out if you're looking for a nice little contemporary romance that will hit all of your feels.

Ya'll know I've been on this CCJ binge and I haven't looked back. Everything that she writes is golden and I've been loving my journey in reading a lot of her stuff! 4.5 Stars. CW: death of a parent

Getting Schooled is hate to love done so well. It focuses on Reese and Jason. Reese is a heroine with a troubled past who attempts to get her life on tract and eventually becomes a graduate assistant. It is through her work that she meets Jason who is maybe just a tad bit rude and pushes Reese's buttons like other. What happens next is nothing short of a hilarious and beautiful romance filled with chemistry and some of the best banter. As I have stated in previous reviews, CCJ is gifted at characterizations. She makes her characters both realistic and likeable. Jason and Reese are like oil and water at first. They do not get along and they have no intentions of getting along. The pure sexual attraction that they have is undeniable, but they can't stand each other so the back and forth is pure gold. As a reader, you can't help but anxiously await for them to figure things out. While I think that most of this novel is fun, there are some serious moments where the emotional struggles for each character is addressed. There's a lot of loss that they're both dealing with and sometimes it comes out in the form of projection. This is where they both become supportive of each other. They don't appear to experience loss the same way, but they understand that their pain may be similar. I wasn't expecting that level of intensity, but I'm glad that it was a part of the book. Jason also has a prosthetic leg and while it isn't the entire focus of the story as a whole, it is important to Jason's character development. It's insight to how he views himself and past conversations that have occurred when a partner finds out and it also serves insight to how Reese views him.

Overall, this was a great book and I'm excited to continue the series. Every time I read a CCJ book I continue to understand why people love her so much. She's so great at everything she writes!

- I’m usually not the biggest fan of short romances, but this was cute! Christina C Jones does such a great job of having the best banter with her characters!
- Because the book was so short, I wish there had been a little less spice and a few more dates to help me really connect with the couple.
- I’m so invested in the Wright brothers and I can’t wait to read more about them! I love that their family is so close knit and it made me so excited for book two.

Another solid romance from CCJ. I just adore her authorial voice and how she writes her characters. And her humor is fantastic. This was super fun, and I loved the added element of studying literature in a college class setting!

The move from chemistry to love did feel a bit rushed, but overall, it was a super fun and swoony read.

2020 Fall Bingo (#fallintorombingo🍁): Series Following a Large Family

Love CCJ’s voice as usual, but I was frustrated that TA/student ethical implications are never discussed. Feels like a weird omission, especially since the novella starts with Reese offering editorial comments on Jason’s paper. The disability rep (Jason has a prosthetic) is great and the subplot with their parents is adorable. I docked a star for the lack of discussion re: ethics in the classroom.

Petition to become internet friends with Christina C. Jones because I just really love this woman. Hero has a disability. Content warning for loss of a parent/car crash. He’s a college student and she a TA. They were so stinkin cute. And they had a great sarcastic/fighting banter going that I really enjoyed.

Christina C. Jones has, once again, proven why she has quickly become my new favorite author. Getting Schooled was hilarious! The characters are young, smart, sexy, cocky, and bougie. I loved me some Jason and Reese. They were the epitome of young black love once they got past their initial dislike of one another. I love how quick witted both of them were. There were so many funny one liners throughout the book. With Getting Schooled, you get a break from the heavy emotional crisis you see in a lot of romance books. It was a fun read without all of the drama. I didn't know I needed a break from books full of emotional roller coasters. The supporting characters were just as entertaining. Devyn and Ms. Imara were hilarious. I really enjoyed this book and I'm uber excited to dive into Joseph and Justin's story.

This was such a feel-good romance. And while it’s set in college, it features older, more mature characters! It was a fun time.

As a grad assistant to a literature class, I loved the intellectual attraction Reese builds towards Jason through grading his paper. Not knowing the face behind the thoughts on page, their initial introduction was hilarious and filled with such sharp banter. From hate to love, Jason and Reese were not afraid to speak their minds, always letting each other know exactly how they feel.

The family tie-in was wonderful. It was refreshing to see family being not only supportive but also cheerleaders toward their widowed parent deciding to date. They were such a comical group! And I loved seeing a disability represented, with Jason having a prosthetic leg.

In terms of the actual romance, it’s quite smooth sailing the entire way through. I think I would have liked a larger bump in the road for Reese and Jason to overcome, but overall it was a really cute read.

Loved this :-)

The beginning was especially dynamic! The banter, the pettiness, LOL. Loved it!

The end, despite showcasing honesty and the fantastic ability to be one's self in a relationship and receive support, was a little too weepy for me. I still wanted more of the back and forth I thought was lost somewhat.

Nonetheless, this book had excellent characters! The parents on both sides were amazing, and I don't say that lightly since I honestly dislike most familial/parental relationships in romance books. But this felt warm, real, authentic, sweet without ever being saccharine. Perfect.

I thought Reese was brave. Seeing women put their feelings out there in romance always amazes and scares me. Jason was a great character as well, though I'd have liked to learn a bit more about his interior, like a little more about his army life but this was good too. And it was a nice twist seeing a non-PTSD veteran.

There is a lot I loved here: the dialogue, the back stories, the Terminator, the niece, the class, the response papers woven in, the stance on Creative Writing, the Black consciousness, the best friendship, the frenemy, the brothers, the duplex. A lot!

Excellent book that surpassed my expectations and I'm glad I kept reading :-D

Getting Schooled had the things I enjoy in a book:
 College romance
 Professor - TA / student
 Enemies to lovers
 Dual pov
Older college students (late 20s instead of out of high school age)

I enjoyed reading about how Jason is a former service member who is now in college to finish his degree and Reese is a TA for one of his classes. She's been reading his school papers but not knowing they were his. She's intrigued by his words.

When one of his papers wasn't given a grade he thought he deserved he gets into an argument with Reese. The heat between the two of them is steamy.

GETTING SCHOOLED is the first book in The Wright Brothers series. It can be read as a standalone. A new to me author, Ms. Jones, created a fun read. Lovers of enemies to lovers in a college setting will enjoy this book.

This was such a sweet romance! Reese is 26 and serving as the teacher’s assistant in her mom’s college class. She helps edit and read through the students papers somewhat anonymously and really connects to one of the students papers. Shortly after she bumps (literally) into Jason, one of the students, and they have a bit of hate-banter about it...not knowing Jason is the writer of the paper she connected to earlier. They have a few more run-ins, he thinks she’s uppity & that she probably looks down on him, a 28-year-old college student showing up in his mechanic clothes. But over time Reese and Jason realize there is way more heat between them, especially after their banter sessions.

Once they’re together, the electricity and steaminess just cranks up...these two are perfect for one another and I love how connected they are but also not afraid to push one another. There is very low-drama to their relationship and I honestly loved that, we don’t need conflict around the relationship in all the reads. Jason, a former Army soldier, also reveals to Reese early on that he is an amputee and shows her his prosthetic leg. He was definitely worried over her reaction since most reactions he got were people wanting to help him or pity him or are just repulsed, but Reese had zero issues and treated him as normal and I loved to see it. I really enjoyed all the side characters as well, Reese’s relationship with both her mom and best friend was so much fun. I loved Jason’s relationship with his dad, his brothers, and his niece. I am so glad I read this author and can’t wait to dive into all the reads now!

I have been sleeping on this author!! I am so happy that a bookish friend recommended this author to me because I was completely drawn into this story. Reese is a graduate student and teaching assistant for her mother's literature course when she grades a few papers that catch her eye. Jason is an older student completing his degree later in his life and needs the literature course that Reese's mother teaches to complete his degree. On the side Jason works for his father's dealership so he sometimes attends the class in his back of the dealership mechanics uniform. Reese has a few interactions with Jason that gives off a love/hate vibe and as they interact they both learn there is more than what you see. I enjoyed most of this story; however, there were a few things that turned me off. The use of the N-word in any dialogue of modern contemporary literature turns me off!! Luckily, it was only used a few times but it was still jarring. Also the abrupt ending left me just angry because I am pretty sure the next books in the series are standalones as well. I am still really interested in completing the series because all of the characters made me want to know their stories.

This specific video review will be included in the August 2019 wrap-up.

My first ever Christina C. Jones book and it was epic. Getting Schooled is a hate to love romance that features a grad assistant and a student in her mother's class. The romance was fire-y and will make your heart swoon for sure. The comedy in this, wow. Miss Jones is the perfect choice if you want a true romcom novel. The family, the friendships, every single aspect of this romance book, was a joy to read.

Jason is returning to college to finish his degree and these two start their relationship . . . with a bumpy start! They, actually, bump into each other and it's no good, my friends. But!!! The encounters after that are just so GREAT. It's so funny to watch them banter and throw every single thing at each other. You see the attraction quickly and you just want them to fall in love because *whispers* they totally will. They're perfect for each other and you can see that/read that easily.

The "princess" and the "mechanic" have a moment, or two, filled with flirty, smart, banter. My favorite contemporary novels are the ones where the attraction starts with the two MCs loving each others....brains. The nice body parts are just icing on the cake. The banter is great. The grown-up emotion is a joy to read. The relationships between the MCs and their parents is a delight. Just all around fun because the characters are so well crafted. Loved it, and immediately went on to the next in the series.

“Have a great weekend was what actually came out of her mouth, but the words may as well have been: Your move, motherfucker. As far as I was concerned? Game on.

This book deserves 5 stars, I really think it does. Been reading a lot of books with romance in it lately, and let’s be honest; most of it isn’t that good..

In this book there is non of that cringy stuff and everything feels very realistic. Like, there is banter between the characters that makes sense because it fits with their personalities. The dialoge feels so dynamic, especially in the beginning. This is a hate-to love love, so of course they don’t like each other in the beginning.

Reese is our heroine and she is a graduate assistant in her mothers class. Jason is a non-traditional student, getting his degree after being discharged from the military. All the scenes with them together just worked, they were very believable and their chemistry was fire. The pettiness in het beginning was just so funny to me, I could really recognize myself in it lol. That’s probably why I like these characters so much.

Anyways, if you're looking for a book where the characters don't play games, act immature and silly, and work towards having a mature relationship; you should read this book for sure. I have been sleeping on this author but not anymore, already read the second book in this series.
