Mr. M.C. Raj is a prolific author with various book-titles to his credit and with these labels come an aura and craftsmanship to his writing. His latest offering, The Crossbow Code is a novel that's set in the geographical locations of Vatican City (the home of Pope) and Mumbai and as exotic a location they could be, it's the narrative of the book that make them look mysteriously creepy. How many times can you possibly find The Pope talking to a commoner, that too from a Third World country like India which doesn't boast of a huge christian population either? Let me tell you from my experience that odds for that would be infinitely negative. But here we get to see one and one that's hugely engaging. It's an open secret that churches all over the world hide secrets and although many would find Dan Brown's works as heresy, they do tend to point towards an inconvenient truth. The concepts of Christianity that I have come to known thanks to the works of Kathleen McGowan, Mel Gibson and Martin Scorsese (and not from Catholic Bible) are narrated with poise by the author. Kris, the protagonist of the book, also finds himself in the company of two more personnel, haggard looking, later in one dilapidated building of Rome and they let him know not only the deeply buried secrets of Vatican City and Christianity but Hinduism too. Wonderful narrative. But the book doesn't only stop here with its suspense and mysteries for Pope is found murdered following a deeply disturbing discourse with Kris and now our hero is on the run. Has he really killed the Pope or is there someone else responsible for Pope's murder and now chasing his life too? You've gotta find that after making the purchase for reviews for suspense thrillers tend to act as SPOILERS!!!

I definitely found some negatives with the book. Usually when a book tries to synchronize the past of a character that has its own life with his/her present, it starts derailing. The first inconsistency shows up when Saul, one of the inhabitants of that dilapidated building, starts describing his association with birth of Christianity and leads us towards Hinduism and while doing that, relates Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism. He brings us anecdotes about Hinduism to let us know its influence over early-period Christianity but at the crucial juncture, abandons it completely and I for one found it very difficult to comprehend this entire subplot. There was nothing to read between the lines, so impact of this very interesting narrative got lost on me and left me in bad taste. Secondly, there are lack of literary nuances in the book. I want to ask the author/his publishing agency that how would he/it like to spell the word SIR? Would it be S-I-R (that's the right one) or S-A-R (that's the one I found spelled in the book)? Now had it been for a novice/debutante writer, I would have waved this mistake off but what about Mr. Raj who is a veteran of many book titles. That's the one mistake who put me off so badly that at that very juncture, I decided to drop it for good and yes, had it not been for an interesting premise led out by the author, I would definitely have followed my heart. Good for everyone though, rest of it came off pretty handy. Grammatical mistakes especially the use of punctuation marks and rest of follow up sentences need an experienced glance as well. Let's do the scoring now:

a) Achievement - 2/2

b) Language Skills - 1.5/2

c) Plot and Character Development - 2/3

d) Editing and Proofreading - 1/2

e) Book Cover, Page Quality and Blurb - 1/1

Total: 7.5/10; 3.5/5 on a Five-Point Scale

Verdict: The Crossbow Code is nowhere close to being called a flawless book but its fast pace and shrewd plotting keep the readers in suspense and that's where it fulfills its promise. It's undoubtedly one of the better works by an Indian author in suspense thriller genre in recent memory.

The book is based on the events of the past so those who not know of it , won’t find the content appealing.
So to enjoy the book, you need to know your history.
The book might confuse the readers who know nothing about The Bible, as there has been mention of the new testament and the characters by the name of Saul and Rocky who happen to be related to The Holy Bible.

This is not the book for you if your mind doesn’t have the capacity to think out of the box.
The author breaks all the stereotypic images you have in your mind about your history and all you can do is brace yourself to be able to survive the bombshells that the author deploys in his words.

Kudos to MC Raj for delivering something so powerful that all we can do is nod our heads in shock at each relevation.
Every single page of this book is worth the money you will spend in buying the book.
A must read and perhaps a should be read book as well.

The Peacemaker A review of the novel ‘The Crossbow Code

“There is nothing more provocative than minding your own business. - William S. Burroughs

Author M C Raj’s novel ‘The Crossbow Code is a fictional story set in the past but is one that has it bearings in the present of today and perhaps of the conceivable future. Set across three different continents and as many countries, we follow a man, a stranger amidst a sea of humanity, a man named Kris. He is a provocateur, a philosopher, a man of ideas and higher ideals. In his adventures he interacts with various men, some ordinary while others some of the most notable figures from the history of mankind. Through his provocations we get to see and understand the other side of the heroes and institutions that we adore so much.

First up I have to let you know that this isn’t your regular thriller novel, and although theme wise it resembles other popular books, this one is more of an ideological thriller-fiction. While strong characterizations along with solid plotting are a prerequisite for any novel; where such books differ is in the integration of the author’s ideas - ideas that try to invigorate and channel our preconditioned minds into accepting newer facts and also be made aware of situations that we are ignorant about. But such ideological fiction often faces a familiar risk, of such ideas getting buried under bad writing, but that isn’t the case here as the execution is wonderful as well. It succeeds in using its plot situations and allegories to open up arguments and discourses about a variety of topics.

The Crossbow Code works also as a good exposition into information about important people and movements from around the world. And you will be impressed not only by the content but also by the mode of delivery the author has chosen here. The reader gets a crash course in the Indian independence struggle, its leaders, the prevailing caste system, its ills, and also on the unreported side of Christianity. And once you get used to the narrative, the flow of events that will remind you of an expose documentary gels well together and never feels forced.

There isn’t a lot that I found wrong with the book, but at times I felt the author went overboard in trying to make his point. Kris for most part appears as a grounded and a courageous fellow, the hero amongst us asking questions we have all wanted to ask. But sometimes his larger-than-life persona tends to put him in the same ranks as the idols he questions. Also, within the plot work I felt a lot of areas could’ve been handled more subtly, instead of going for an all out, crude and in-your-face treatment.

MC Raj’s writing on humankind, women, love, religion and sexuality through his character Kris puts a greater emphasis on scientific and rational arguments than on tradition based or culture closed arguments. The book succeeds in reminding us what it means to be a human.

In the end, this is a book that I think a lot of people will enjoy. There’s a bit of history lesson in it, there’s a bit of paranoiac dystopian future reality in it, and it also suggests ways by which we can overhaul our social order for the better. There’s plenty here to suggest that a brilliant mind was at work here, and it is an important read, especially for the times we live in.

Conspiracy thrillers are a fascinating genre. The word "thriller" is a heavy word. When you are writing this genre, you need to toss your storytelling and writing into this magical realm where the reader is just uncontrollably holding on to the book and rushing through it.

Unfortunately, this didn't happen with Crossbow Code. I finished it in ten sittings and that's what disappoints me the most.

Where to start? I was eager to read this book. It had a wonderful cover (bit cartoonish with the eyes though ) and had amazing paper quality. The first chapter was intriguing and I was excited. But then it STOPPED. The story twisted into the "filler" territory and I was bombarded with information about Christianity and other religions. I liked it in the beginning hoping it teaches me a little about my own religion (I'm a Protestant) but that doesn't mean I was invested. I liked the research but I didn't like the execution. There should be tension, anxiety, race against time or at least better characters but I was left with an educational book. There's nothing wrong with it other than the fact that the genre is a thriller. You need to excite the writer while you educate them. For example - Da Vinci Code does it brilliant and even Umberto Eco who just blasts you with the writing and narrative construction.

Nevertheless, the third act played well with the characters covering their arcs and it did give me excitement to finish the book. But the middle part was just very slow, hard-to-read.

For that I give this book: 2.5/ 5.

Sorely disappointed with how this churned out. Though the narration was fluid and smooth and that helped this book from getting atrocious to somewhat "bearable".

Thank you for reading.

As Thomas Moore has said"It is only through mystery and madness the soul is revealed".The perfect quote for this book"The crossbow code by Mr.M.C.Raj.The authour has beautifully encrafted it.The book revolves around the mysteries and about the person called "Kris"his journey. The story is set in various locations that includes Vatican city as well as in Mumbai. The various concept of Christianity and Jesus has been beautifully described in the book. The cover and the title of the book is something unique and attractive that is USP that the people would feel like reading it.

Kris, the character is described as the man who has his own thoughts and believes in them, his journey about interacting with Pope and ordinary man is shown, his unconditional love and loyalty towards his wives has been portrayed wonderfully. It is a thriller mysterious fiction novel to be precise having strong plotting of the characters.

The only part I didn't like was it was too lengthy and there were grammatical errors(Punctuation marks) but still the way author has executed is nice as it gives us knowledge about thee hidden concepts may it be Independence struggle of India or the leaders or discrimination of cast or Christianity.

The book's suspense and mysterious will keep the readers entertained and that is the USP so people would enjoy it till the last page.To know more please grab the copy of the novel and experience it!Overall it is a decent book you wont regret yourself after reading it so why to wait just read it!

Storyline and plot is engaging. Book shows the vast knowledge and research behind the intriguing mysteries. Every Chapter contains a new mystery and it hooked me till the end.

Narration is flawless. The twists and turns into the book engages the reader. Characters are strongly justified. I loved the ideology in the books. It surely touches your heart and questions your inner self. I loved the conversation between Pope and Kris. However the punctuation errors in the book spoils the reading.

The Pope of the Vatican passed out in the public milieu and the suspect was immediately traced & locked up in Italy. kris denied his role by any means in the incident & on his wives appeal to the pope later called his release from the jail. But Kris failed to digest how could his wives flown to the city & the next thing baffled him is the offer of the Pope to spend a day with him the Vatican. And again luck doesn't seem to be his ally and after series of vituperation & kicks, he was thrown out of the Vatican. The twist came when few hours later from the meeting, Pope was found dead and the Kris framed out as the main suspect and the same picks the story. Litany spans the plot from India to Germany but the question flagged up in each event was : ' Who'd orchestrate this plan ? '
The author had bolted the plot with versatile characters like Kris's wives, Rhea & Fatima , Mohandas , a salient freedom fighter. Then there's this Dr. Bakhsi & Soul and Rocky which positively kept the book a bit engaging.
The Crossbow Code is not a page-turner as a thriller with a pinch of Theology, as I'd expected it to be. There's plenty of suspense and the unexpected keeps happening but you turn the pages slowly.

"A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy." ~Edward P. Morgan.
The above quote reverberates in my ears as soon as I finish reading this classic novel. The description is quite vivid as if everything is happening in front of us.
It is actually a thrilling tale with a deadly touch of religious elements giving it a totally different outlook. Infact, its not a regular thriller nor the one which keeps us glued to our seats and our gaze is fixed on it intently but there is something about it definitely , maybe due to the variety it offers or the historical and factual aspects of it but it reasonably succeeds in keeping the readers engaged.
Though no book is without any loopholes . Here , the major concern was author seems to have a penchant for details and at times the novel becomes a complicated read. Moreover , the length is a bit longer too which makes after a point makes it mundane.
In all , its a one time engrossing read......

The story begins with a bang and instills interest in the minds of readers. As the story progresses, I learnt many new things about Christanity. The mystery element is rightly maintained until the 5th chapter. From sixth chapter onwards, the focus completely shifts on Indian history and the freedom movement. Over the next few chapters, author keeps you engrossed with the untouchability in India and the subsequent try by Indian leaders for abolishing it. Towards the end, the Pope murder comes up again.

The narration is in 3rd person and kept me hooked. The characters also have been crafted well. I am not very much pleased with the flow of the story.

Likes:

Kris's thoughts about religion and God.
Kris's unconditional love for Fatima and Rhea.
Alice's confession.
The paper quality of this book is really good.

Dislikes:

The flow of events in the story.
The reveal of the murder mystery was plain and simple. The 'thrill' factor was missing.
The second last chapter takes the reader on a tour to Germany which I feel could have been excluded.

I rate:
Cover: 2.5/5
Characters: 3.5/5
Story: 2.5/5

On the whole, I rate 'The Crossbow Code' with 3/5 stars.

Author MC Raj is a winning bet in the field of writing. The book "Crossbow code" is a page turner. It's genre in thriller/fiction.

You'll be amazed to read the content of this novel. The information related to various events are beautifully described.

The story starts with a scene that initiates suspense of the plot. The protagonist, Kris, is a philosophical and interesting fictional character.

Scope of improvement:
1. I felt that Author sometimes went in writing too much of the details. I'd leave that on audience to decipher.
2. The length of the novel could have been 20-30 pages shorter to make it a quick read.
3. The title and cover is just okay and not demanding.

Stars:
1. The language is easy to comprehend.
2. The book keeps the interest of the reader from page one till the end with various past incident in the support of the main story line narration. It is really a good read.

Way to go, writer! Good luck.

History revealed, truth unfolds!

Book- The Crossbow Code
Author- MC Raj.

Review-

The book is all about politics, power, capitalism, dominance and what not. A source of knowledge of the world history answering the loop holes we have had reading history in classes.
A totally different picture of the father of the nation that are kept hidden behind the black and blue text in our history books.

The masquerade fell from filthy faces of the people who call them as follower of Jesus.

I personally loved the one liners or the text in Italics as the summary of the paragraphs and revelation of the deeper meaning hidden in it.
In author's style I would like to conclude, 'History revealed, truths unfolded.

The book had typos which is a common human error and repetition of terms like Pandora's box could have been avoided.

Reccomendation-Recommended to those who take a keen interest in world history and are ready to accept the truth.

Rating-4/5

When I started to read The Crossbow Code the first thing I was intrigued about was its cover & title. The cover is good but would’ve loved it even more if it had a little bit more detailing. The plot of the book is quite interesting & the author has succeeded upto an extent to make it racy & a smooth read, I liked the use of historic information in the story. I would’ve loved it even more if the protagonist have been portrayed a little bit more believable in some parts, also I would’ve preferred the length of the book to be under 250 pages to make the story more packed. In all this book can only be a product of an experienced author like MC Raj & surely deserves to be read.

The story is for history geeks. The author has successfully penned down the mysteries one after the other. I personally liked the one liner at the end of the paragraphs that gave story line an interesting touch. Poems are beautifully written. Language is captivating.
The way author has narrated the story is commendable. There are many revelations about the famous people of the past, whether fiction or reality, but it surely keeps readers hooked till the end. An awesome piece of creativity from the writer’s pen!

The novel touched the rims which were unthinkable. The theoretical approach which author picked was unusual. He played with his words quite well in the form of strong dialogues, verdicts and speeches throughout. The book had a unique and strong flavour which is not seen much in the midst of casual tales which are narrated these days.
