3 Hero Complex Stars

Maybe if you said sweeter things to me, I wouldn’t have to stroke my own ego.
“You know what, Jake? she said very sweetly. “You can keep on stroking all of your own things from here on out.

Avery Sparks and Jake Mitchell have a long and complicated history. Growing up together, a random grad night hook up and a mutual attraction means these two always seem to be in each other's orbit. Riding off into the sunset together might be a real possibility in another life. Unfortunately Avery's job as Chance, Nebraska's fire chief means she needs to stay local while Jake's position as nation's natural disaster hero (or something like that) means he's always on the move.

Honestly, I'm not quite sure what to add to this review. I liked it but didn't love it. Jake and Avery were cute together but I definitely felt an awkward lack of chemistry at times. These two grew up together with Avery being especially close to Jake's mom in her younger years, but for the most part their history felt a little disjointed to me.

And there were the tornados. Lots and lots of tornados.

My gift for all of the disaster talk was Avery. I'm finding more and more that some authors struggle with that fine line between strong heroine and stone cold bitch. Avery epitomizes the perfect blend of self aware plus woman hear me roar and I loved it.

I know that based on this review it may not seem like I enjoyed Twisted Up, but overall it was a solid 3 star read. I liked it, just didn't love it. Maybe I just need a little more ooomph from my contemporary romances now that my reading tastes gave broadened. Maybe this one just fell a wee bit short of great, but I've always enjoyed Erin Nicholas' writing in the past and I expect that to hold true in the future as well.

Erin Nicholas is a new author to me and Twisted Up was an enjoyable, fun and heartwarming introduction to her writing.

"For nine years they’d had a no-contact-no-conversation rule. It had been a good rule.

Set in the small-town of Chance, Nebraska, Avery is the towns fire chief and Jake one of the country's most respected emergency disaster relief specialists. And when he returns for the school reunion they soon find themselves trapped together whilst a tornado rips through town.

description

The second chance trope with an enemies-to-lovers feel works a treat for Avery and Jake. He's cocky, and presses all her buttons but with her sassy, sharp attitude, they have a great chemistry bringing wit, antagonism, passion and feeling to their story. I was rooting for this couple from the start, but with Jake only passing through, it's always in the background that their romance has an expiry date. And as they get closer, past truths are revealed bringing the emotional angle.

"He’d seen a lot of destruction, a lot of loss, a lot of sadness. He knew when something was good, when something was right."

I did feel that the initial spark between them hit a little bit of a lull, however there is a fair bit to deal with considering they in the midst of a disaster and the roles this Avery and Jake play. Overall though this was a easy read and with the foundation laid for future couples, I'll definitely be revisiting Chance to see what happens between Max and Bree, and Dillon and Kit.

This new series by Erin Nicholas is BRILLIANT! I have loved everything Erin Nicholas has written and I have collected a lot of book boyfriends along the way. She has written stories that are laugh out loud funny, that touch your heart, that empower, and that combine all those elements into wonderful love stories. Twisted Up is one of those.

Twisted Up has two of my favorite elements in heroes and heroines. Jake is a cocky hero and Avery is a kick-ass heroine. The combination of these two is explosive! AND I LOVE IT!

This story, hands down, is my favorite Erin Nicholas story. Not only because of the cocky hero and the kick-ass heroine, but also because of the emotional elements in this story. I don't typically like a book that makes me cry - that usually means something very sad has happened. Twisted Up, however, had me crying like a baby. Not because it was sad, it was full of very powerful, emotionally charged scenes that touched my heart. I was rooting for Jake and Avery from the moment I met them and even more so as their story developed. The two had a history that neither truly understood. Finding closure not only with each other but other people important in both their lives was amazing to *see*.

Erin Nicholas has create another amazing world that I love to get lost in. I am looking forward to the next story in this series. I highly recommend this story/series!

3 stars!
This was a quick, light read.
The writing, characters, and story were good.
This is a story about two people who had a history together when they were in high school and have been circling one another for the last couple of years.

A natural disaster occurs putting our lead characters in a situation where they finally give into their desire/lust for one another. The rest of the story is about them trying to figure out where "this thing" between them will go from here.

I enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading more of this author's work.

What an awesome new series by Erin Nicholas!! Twisted Up introduces us to a new town and new characters to fall in love with. Chance Nebraska is well known as a tornado town. It's also known for pumping out sexy men who were born and raised there. Jake Mitchell is one of those sexy men! That man makes me laugh, swoon, melt and want to smack him! Not only is Chance known for its men, but it's also known for its kick ass women! Avery Sparks is fierce, independent, cool and calm under pressure, and the fire chief! I love that!!!!

One person gets under Avery skin unlike anyone else. When she finds out that Jake is back in town, she decides she's going to do her best to avoid him. Wouldn't luck have it that almost immediately they are locked in a shed together?? Jake loves nothing more than ruffling Avery's feathers. He knows how to push her buttons better than anyone. Their sexual chemistry grabbed me from their first moment together and seriously didn't let go until the last page. I adored these two together. I love a couple who can fight, bicker and get turned on all at the same time. The history these two share is one of my favorite parts of this story, but their present? Ohhhh my their present! ;)

You'll get natural disasters that make people do crazy things, storage rooms, friendship, an awesome town that comes together in time of need, a meddling cousin, laugh out loud moments and total sexiness in this one!!!
Happy reading!

Twisted Up is the story of Jake and Avery. Jake is an emergency crisis manager and is back in town for their High School reunion when a tornado hits Chance, Nebraska. Avery, the local fire chief, has been hot for Jake since high school. Just before the tornado hits, Jake and Avery get hot and heavy in the schools shed. When they get out of the shed they find that their little farming town has been hit by an EF4...again. Jake agrees to stay in Chance to assist in the cleanup. Avery doesn't want him around because it messes with her emotions. Jake is the man she loves to hate and hates to love. When they are thrown together by the mayor and his wife, they find out just how much they need each other and how much the town needs them!

I loved everything about this book from the pace, to the characters, to the excellent writing and dialogue.

Fantastic start to a new series by !

Twisted Up by Erin Nicholas was AMAZING! I would give it more than 5 stars if possible. I was hooked from the beginning. Having lived in Oklahoma, near a town that has been ravaged by tornadoes more than once, I could totally relate to the story. Erin did a wonderful job of making this story believable. It was definitely attention holding. Avery is what you want every heroine to be like. She is a tough, no nonsense type of girl...except for when it comes to Jake. She has a very hard time denying him anything. Jake is kind of full of himself, but with good reason. He is good at his job, possibly one of the best. Avery got under his skin 10 years ago and he can't seem to get her out of his head. Another disaster brings them back together, but love will have to keep them together. I could read this book over and over, it was that good. I can't wait to see if Bree & Max and Kit & Dillion get their own books!

A new series by ? Sign me up! is the first in a new series, and may I just say, IT WAS AMAZING! I've been a fan of this author's books for years, and she just keeps getting better. I don't know how she is able to weave nearly impossible odds into happily ever after but always pulls it off with a twist and bang! Avery was so kick-butt and Jake? *swoon* Great chemistry, with a shared love of their hometown, able to work together well. Fabulous! And the secondary characters! I cannot wait for the next one! Write fast, Ms. Nicholas!

I was absolutely blown away by this book(pun intended)! when I started this story I just could not put it down. I didn't read a blurb so I had no idea what to expect and was so pleasantly surprised at how amazingly great this book was. So many great characters that I can already see future stories forming. The hero and heroine in this story had amazing chemistry that just sizzled off the pages. Their banter was the absolute best. One click now! You will not be disappointed.

If it weren't for the tornadoes...I'd move to Chance! I was so sad to see the story end. Fire Chief Avery Sparks (awesome choice of names) and EMA guru Jake Mitchell have known each other since they were young. The year prior they were thrown together to ride out a tornado that ravaged the town. Jake blows back into town before yet another tornado takes aim on their high school reunion. A series of humorous misfortunes throws them together in the utility shed at the school as the tornado bears down on them. Once the storm passes they set off together to help rebuild they town they love. The "sparks" fly between them during the time Jake is in town helping out. Avery tries her hardest to not fall in love but soon can't resist the temptation Jake dangles in front of her. Another charming town and excellent new characters to fall in love with. Can't wait to see what else comes from Chance!

Loved, loved, loved!! This is a second chance set in a small Nebraska town with some very interesting characters. I thought going in that this was a storm chaser type story but it wasn't that at all. It's a heartwarming story of people putting aside their differences and working together to help others.

Avery and Jake have history. Avery practically grew up at Jake's house and she had a very special relationship with his mother. Their relationship was special too, at least she thought is was until she discovered he had left the day after graduation without even saying goodbye. Now he's back for a visit and their high school reunion and she can't seem to avoid him any longer. When disaster strikes the little town again, they team up and work together to help the town recover. The time together proves the spark that was once between them is still there but is it something worth fighting for??

This is a fantastic book and definitely one I recommend.

Avery Sparks enjoys making sense out of chaos and relishes her role as Fire Chief and head of emergency management in her hometown of Chance, Nebraska. Independent and sassy, Avery has her life together and doesn't let anything faze her. That is until the guy who walked away from her so easily all those years ago, suddenly walks back in. And when unforeseen circumstances force them to work together, who knows what could happen...

Jake Mitchell has become a top leader in the field of disaster recovery, and when he finds himself in the middle of a tornado, in his hometown of Chance, he will do whatever he can to sort it out. It is just an added bonus for him that he must work alongside Avery, the woman he has never really managed to forget. But Avery certainly knows how to hold a grudge. But can their explosive chemistry ever really go anywhere as he must always leave for the next place that needs him? And can the past ever truly be forgiven?

TWISTED UP by Erin Nicholas is the first book in her new series Taking Chances. With lots of energy and action, a strong, independent heroine who knows what she wants, and a cheeky hero who you cannot help but like, this novel is a delightful read. The witty banter that is natural between Avery and Jake made me smile, and I loved the fast-paced action surrounding the tornado, and the many emotional elements of the story. TWISTED UP by Erin Nicholas is the first book I have ever read by this author but it certainly will not be the last.

Great new series with strong females that totally catch them by surprise. Avery had a rough time growing up, she was left behind by her mother and her grandmother couldn’t stand her. Jake grew up belonging to one of the prominent families in Chance. Avery spent her afternoons with Jake’s mom which worked out great for him, as he was free to explore and have fun with his cousins. Ten years ago things changed for Avery and she left Chance to find her own life. She returns home to become the Fire Chief. Jake left Chance to pursue his dreams and doesn’t come home much but when he does he drives Avery crazy. Pick up the book and read about the sparks that fly between Avery and Jake.

*Reread this book a second time and I still love it. My previous review still stands. What a wonderful, feel good, fun and sexy story. A must read for anyone in the mood for a few smiles and tears. Edited 08/14/17*

Aww what a wonderful story! This is the second book I've read by this author and I am so happy that I have found a new author to add to my must read list. Erin Nicholas has written a story filled with such great characters and so much emotion that you might need some tissue reading Jake and Avery's story. Jake, with his hero complex, and Avery, with her abandonment issues, makes for some funny moments and some very heart warming times as well. And let's not forget about the naughty and sexy moments either. The chemistry between Avery and Jake were scorching hot and I enjoyed every single moment of their love story. I also loved the small town life portrayed in this story. How everyone is always helping out and coming together to overcome disasters and make their town a better place to live. I loved that! I can't wait to read more!

I'm always looking for sorbet and this sounded perfect.

I liked Avery and Jake. I loved the small town and their history. Avery and Jake had serious chemistry and a somewhat fun banter. Plus the cast of secondary characters leave me interested in future books. There did seem to be a lot of push and pull. The play to appear as a united front wasn't a plot line that worked for me in this story. There was definitely something missing; a spark I was looking for.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the overall story and I really loved the ending. I'll definitely be looking for the next book in the series.

WOW what a book! All the ups and down make you stay on the edge of you seat! You will not be disappointed with this new series! Avery Sparks is a sassy kick ass heroine and also the Fire Chief of Chance, Nebraska. She has mastered the skill of recovery from mass disaster situations. She finds out that Jake Mitchell is coming back into town and she doesn't know whether to me mad or happy. Jake and Avery have know each other for a very long time and have a odd relationship. A disaster comes up and they find they are stuck together working on the same project. Will spirits stay high or will the tables turn

I'm drawn to second chance romances and really love the idea that while they chose different paths in their lives after one intense encounter at the tender age of eighteen they found their way back to each other. Jake is self-assured and sometimes cocky. Avery is more than she gives herself credit for. Her confidence is buried deep and the perfect result of any relationship is that, at the end of the day, you make each other better people. Jake and Avery do that for each other as they forge a future together. Looking forward to more.

I really enjoyed this second-chance romance. Jake and Avery were fantastic - everything from their witty banter, little quips and the sexual tension between them was perfect. I liked the pacing of the book and found myself really caught up in everything that was going on in their small town. It was almost like the movie twister with a much better romance (in my opinion anyways.) I also liked the supporting characters and I'm so excited to read more in this series.

This review can also be found at All About Romance at:

Small town romances tend to have certain elements in common that appeal to their readers. Shops with cute names; seniors coffee or craft circles where the latest gossip is discussed; best friends who’ve known each other since kindergarten; fundraisers for a neighbor needing a hand; etc. Erin Nicholas is no stranger to this subgenre of contemporary romance, having self-published her successful Sapphire Falls series. But in Twisted Up, the first story in her new Taking Chances series, she takes things up a notch by adding a bite of reality the consequences for a small town that lives along Tornado Alley, a colloquial term for a region of the United States that is prone to strong and damaging storms. For the people of Chance, Nebraska, tornadoes are no laughing matter. The author succeeds in taking a serious subject and still providing the heartwarming romance her readers expect while offering up a unique contemporary story.

The last few summers in Chance have been tough for the town. Since the first EF4 strength tornado hit in recent memory, the townspeople have rallied to fix the damages and work on their preparedness for future storms. As the fire chief, Avery Sparks is always one of the first to respond to any emergency and these definitely qualify. But with storms this big, state and federal officials get involved. And that means her old friend, long ago crush, prom date and virginity taker, Jake Mitchell, keeps showing up in town. On site for brief periods after the last two tornadoes, they’ve had a little flirtation, some stolen kisses, but nothing more as Jake stays only as long as he’s needed, then he’s off to another small town in need of help. When stormy weather once again descends on Chance, Jake, in town for his ten year high school reunion, is in the right place at the right time. But the outside weather is no match for the rocky emotions Avery is experiencing over his being back in town again. There’s no denying the attraction between them will they finally take a chance on a future together?

Knocked down and still fighting, the town of Chance is a definite star here, the setting and plot of the story definitely highlighting the small town spirit and togetherness found in any location where natural disaster strikes. But where things could descend into sadness and grief, those emotions, while present, don’t overwhelm the story. Instead there is an emphasis on being prepared, knowing what to do and where to turn to in an emergency. The different leaders of the town the mayor, the police chief (who happens to be Jake’s father) and Avery as the fire chief work together to provide as much safety for the town as they can, while coordinating relief efforts. It gives you a warm feeling to see these people all pulling together.

Amid the backdrop of summer storms, Avery and Jake’s romance is unstable too. Avery has been hurt by Jake in the past. She was raised by a cold and rather cruel grandmother and Jake’s family was a safe place for her. When he asked her to the prom, she knew it was because his mother had suggested it, but she didn’t care. And when she asked him to kiss her and things escalated quickly, that was okay too. What wasn’t okay though, was the morning after when she discovered that Jake had left town without saying goodbye, en route to his basic training in the national guard. Hurt by this, and abandoned by her grandmother once she was eighteen, Avery made her own way. First college, then training as a firefighter that enabled her to return to Chance and eventually gain the position as fire chief. Adversity has made her strong but her heart is very guarded.

Some readers will see Jake’s actions as insensitive. And they are right to think so. But it’s important to understand Jake’s overall character. From a young age, he wanted to help others. While this sentiment is of course encouraged, it manifested itself in Jake as the continual desire to help more and more people. This desire led him to apply to the national guard and he knew that his mother or Avery would be emotional over his leaving so he didn’t tell them his post-graduation plans. In hindsight he knows he should have approached it differently. But he was eighteen and already thinking of the good he could do for so many other people. Chance became a distant memory in the focus on his career at least until the tornadoes started bringing him back again. But the truth is, he’s more comfortable helping strangers. It hurts to see his neighbours struggling and to avoid this, he stays in town only as long as necessary before heading back to the emotional safety of his office and his desk job. But every time he comes back and sees Avery, he finds a way to spend some time alone with her and it gets harder and harder to leave. This time, things go even further, and they share some steamy scenes that emphasize the depth of the feelings they keep trying to hide. This time, Jake finds that he doesn’t want to leave.

There is a mystery that quickly becomes apparent in the first few chapters, and it kept me reading late into the night. Avery was close to Jake’s parents when she was young, but when he left, something clearly happened to their relationship and they are as strangers to each other now. I wanted to know what happened! And Jake is in the thick of it too, realizing that the future he had envisioned for his parents and Avery that his parents would take care of her while he was gone never happened. The unraveling of that mystery, combined with the romance finally developing between Jake and Avery makes for a very satisfying story. As well, Jake’s two cousins Max (a former army corps engineer) and Dillon (an ER doctor) who are home for the high school reunion provide some humorous moments, and the same goes for Avery and her two best friends Kit and Bree. There are some clear match-ups for future books in the series with these friends that it seems, based on some of the events in this book, will take place concurrently with Jake and Avery’s story. If you enjoy small town romances but are looking for one that stands out, Twisted Up provides a refreshing change.

This was a pretty satisfying romance, though in a typical way? It's a second-chance romance with a strong, active guy with a hero complex and a strong, active woman with some deep-seated insecurities. And while that probably tells you all you need to know (well, along with that it holds together and works) to gauge what you're getting with the story, I don't mean that in a mean or bad way.

Seriously, it isn't sloppy, bad, cliché, or any of the other things that my faint praise seems to damn the story with. I was engaged with both leads the entire story and enjoyed spending the time with them. I was worried that Nicholas was going to manufacture some romance tropes in there, for example, but she didn't need to because the plot flowed naturally from the characters like good romances should. If there's a structural weakness in the story it might be an over-reliance on miscommunication. Pretty much every conflict has miscommunication at its heart. But it does so in lots of different ways and from lots of different motivations so it isn't at all samey or anything and I only noticed once I had finished and was putting thoughts together for a review.

So a solid romance with good characters that I liked and some really heartwarming moments with both Jake and his family (that had important ties to Avery in their own right). Making this a solid four star read and I'll definitely be looking up more from the series by the author.

A note about Steamy: There are a handful of explicit sex scenes putting this in the middle of my steam tolerance. I was a bit worried because the first hits really early and was more than a little dysfunctional. But it turns out Nicholas did a good job of having those scenes illustrate the emotional intimacy and maturity arc of the relationship. At least at first. The last scene or two were pretty much gratuitous, I think.

Please note: We had two reviewers read this book, and their opinions differed somewhat. Our star rating is an approximate average of the two, so read on to see what they thought. That's books, right?!

Avery Sparks and Jake Mitchell have a long history. They were friends back in high school—even went to the prom together—and Jake was Avery’s first boyfriend, first lover. And then he left. Left without saying goodbye, and didn’t come back for years. Avery’s convinced herself she’s moved on, but why does Jake still wind her up so?

Her job as Fire Chief is all about minimizing chaos. And chaos is something that Jake flourishes in—he’s nationally recognized as a leader in disaster recovery, and he thrives in that type of environment. But when disaster strikes Chance, will the lure of helping his hometown fully recover be enough to keep Jake home, or is the lure of working and loving Avery the deciding factor?

I’m a complete and total sucker for a small-town, enemies-to-lovers romance, and Twisted Up hit all the tick marks for me. Likable, engaging characters: Check. Interesting history that propels the current story: Check. Hot and dirty sexy times: Check.

I really enjoyed this quick and dirty romance. I was sucked right into Avery and Jake’s world from the very first page. Sure, I’d have loved it if Avery had more backbone when it came to dealing with Jake and his antics, and of course, I’d have loved it if their backstory came to light a bit sooner in the book. But overall, I really enjoyed Avery and Jake as they danced around their history and feelings.

I admit I became a bit teary at one point when Jake’s family was involved and I LOVED Jake and Avery’s friends: Bree, Kit, Max and Dillon. I can’t wait for their stories and the shenanigans that occurred at the height of the storm. ~ Missy, 4.5 stars

~~~
I have to say that, err, I don't know what to say... Twisted Up has me exactly that—and I'm struggling to find the words to explain the why, how and what of it.
I really wanted to LOVE this book. I've read Erin Nicholas' Boys of Fall books, and been completely enveloped by their awesomeness. And while Twisted Up displays moments of that same awesomeness, overall, I'm left feeling a bit... Conflicted.
Here's what I DID love: this town, and the people in it. The tornado storyline, and the fun had with it. Max and Bree, Dillon and Kit—more, please! The kickass roles given to the women—not sidekicks or wives (solely), but strong, independent women. The ending. Oh, good grief, the last 25% or so... Killed me dead, I enjoyed it so much.
Which makes what I didn't like that much more confusing. Avery was one of those kickass women. A fire chief! Incredible. Except her strength in that role was undermined by the lack of respect shown to her by Jake, and by herself. I wanted to see more spine from her, and I grew more and more frustrated by her failure to speak up. Her truth—when it finally came out—explained a lot, and made me ache for her, but... I wanted it sooner.
I wanted a few things sooner. I struggled with Jake on the whole because I didn't feel like he cared for, or was connected to, Avery. I wished that some of the really great stuff came earlier; that his feelings for her, some of his softer, sweeter, sexier moments were shown in the first third (or even half) of this book. I wanted an apology from him, and I can't help but feel like there was a disconnect here, a foundation that was missing—or shaken by a tornado, if you will.
I'm typically a fan of hate-to-love type relationships, or love stories that grow from antagonism to affection. And I DID like that here in Twisted Up, too. But instead of feeling the spark, the pull between Jake and Avery, without more backstory early on, all I felt was turned off by Jake's lack of respect for Avery, her feelings and her standing in town, and by Avery's lack of respect for herself.
So, yeah. I'm definitely feeling a little twisted and confused. Because I did love some elements of this book. And although I struggled through much of the early stages, I still found myself caring about what happened. And then...
A shift. Avery and Jake's story turned, a framework was built, a foundation was secured, and I finally, FINALLY felt a connection to them. And it was wonderful. A touch predictable, sure, but I don't mind predictable. I mind not feeling the feels that should come with a story that has humor, and grief, and heat, and charm.
And so, I closed Twisted Up confused, conflicted and...happy. Oh, and ready to take a CHANCE on more in this new small-town series. ~ Beth, 3 stars
As fire chief and head of emergency management, Avery Sparks has become the master at handling anything that borders on chaotic... except her love life. Years ago on graduation night she indulged in a little one night hook-up with her friend Jake Mitchell, then he left without looking back. Avery on the other hand stayed behind, and has created a good life for herself, one she has no plans of changing, she has everything she could possibly want in Chance, Nebraska... well except maybe love. But the minute Jake returns home for their high school reunion, the sparks between them start to fly, and mother nature isn't about to let these two off so easy this time!
Jake Mitchell loves what he does, being a leader in natural disaster recovery give him the opportunity to help people and gives him a sense of purpose like nothing else ever could. He likes that it allows him to travel, never really putting down roots anywhere, which totally feeds into his restless spirit. He doesn't really do relationships, or love, mainly because he gave his heart away a long time ago, then made the mistake of walking away. Now for the first time in his life he is going to have to face that mistake when he returns home for his high school reunion, and what he finds waiting there for him, has him wanting things he thought he would... to stay!
This read was unlike anything I have read, I have to say it was quite refreshing to step out of my comfort zone and read something a little different for a change. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with these two their disastrous little adventure proved to be very entertaining, and gave me a serious case of the feels!! This was my first book from this author and I have to say it left a pretty good first impression. I highly recommend you give this one a try it is sure to tap into your emotions and leave you with a happy heart!!
Only Erin Nicholas, the queen of small town romance, could make me want to move to a town that has had ten EF4 -level tornadoes in its history. Yes, tornadoes are scary stuff believe me I know I live in tornado alley and have been through three in my area in the last 10 years and one that hit all over my town and in my neighborhood, but thankfully we were spared. But, there was something so special about the town of Chance, Nebraska and the people who live there that I was easily lured in and immediately felt at home. Not only that but Ms. Nicholas gives us one whirlwind romance (see what I did there, LOL) and she gave us the hint of two more to come that promise to be just as twisted and powerful as this one. Twisted Up is the first book in the Chance, Nebraska series and it is one banging good time.
Avery Sparks loves her hometown of Chance and her job at the fire chief and the town's emergency disaster coordinator. She is great at her job; efficient, helpful, calm and organized much like the way her life is unless Jake Mitchell comes back to town to visit. Jake rolls into town much like a tornado and sends Avery's perfect life spinning. They have history; Avery spent a lot of time as a child and teen with Jake's mom and while they were friendly they weren't really friends. Avery kept Jake's mom, Heidi, busy and she was the daughter she never had and that allowed Jake to run wild with his cousins. Then prom happened and following that graduation and a night that Avery has never forgotten, nor has she forgotten what happened after that night.
There were some serious sparks flying around these two (along with half the contents of the town) and even though there was some animosity, it was easy to see there was way more than that going on between them. Their relationship was much like the aftermath of the tornado that rolled through town; they had to access the damage, they had to work together to clean up, move past and rebuild and they had to understand that there was always the possibility of having to do it again as time goes on and their lives change. I loved that their relationship was complicated; that they had to work to get it right and in the end they both had to be willing to make changes to be together, but most of all I loved that despite the history, despite the hurt feelings, despite family troubles they knew what they had was worth it.
I cannot say enough good things about Twisted Up or about author Erin Nicholas, she just never fails to give contemporary romance readers exactly what they want and she always, always thinks up exciting and fun new ways to do so.
"Twisted Up" is written by Erin Nicholas, and it is the first book in her Taking Chances series. It can be read as a stand-alone book. It features Avery Sparks and Jake Mitchell.
Avery and Jake have history. They've known each other since they were young kids. Avery considered Jake's parents her family while her grandmother took care of her. But then, Jake left after high school graduation and enlisted in the Army National Guard. Avery wanted to prove something of herself, so she worked hard to become fire chief in Chance, Nebraska. She doesn't need Jake or his parents. But what happens when Jake comes back to town?
Jake has always had a soft spot for Avery. He likes her a lot and has always cared about her. Right from the get-go, there's a build up to when they see each other again. It just had me smiling the whole time! Jake and Avery are HOT!
Circumstances will bring them together where they have no choice, but to work with each other. They can't deny their attraction to one another, but can they learn to trust again? Or will their past prevent them from having that happily ever after?
"Twisted Up" is such a well-written story! I'm such a huge fan of Erin's work, and she did not disappoint! There was just something special about this book! It's definitely in my top 3 of books Erin has written!
Twisted Up was a good start to the Taking Chances series by Erin Nicholas.
The storyline is well written, with entertaining and endearing characters.
I enjoyed watching Jake and Avery's relationship unfold.
This wasn't an easy relationship, they both had commitments that kept them apart, but as soon as they were back in the same town there was no holding back. The attraction between them was so strong they couldn't help but come together and let themselves feel and enjoy each other's bodies.
It warmed my heart seeing Jake and Avery work through the miscommunication and struggles to find their HEA. They truly belonged together.
Overall Twisted Up was a well written, second chance contemporary love story with great characters that will leave you with a smile on your face.
Looking forward to reading more from the Taking Chances series.
Thank you Montlake Romance via NetGalley for the advance copy.
Great new series by Erin Nicholas!! After her last series I did not think she could find another town and characters that I would fall in love with but she has!!! I really like how in this book she also deals with weather issues that could happen to anybody at anytime. The way she has the town pull together in the aftermath of a tornado has me hoping if anything ever happens like this in my home town this is what I would hope happens.
Avery and Jake have a bit of a history and now have to work together to get the town on it's feet after another tornado has ripped through their little town of Chance. They already know from past encounters that sparks fly when they are together, but now that they are together longer will the sparks continue and what are they going to do about them?
What an amazing start to a new series by Erin Nicholas!! There is nothing this woman can't write! It has all the hallmarks of her books including a quaint town full of amazing people, hot guys, strong willed women, and stories that touch your heart. Jake and Avery have a history with each other some of which they can't seem to stop. Gathering in town for their reunion, Jake and Avery are trapped together when another tornado sweeps through their hometown. Working through the devastation this time finally leads to some truths being told. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series to see what happens to the other townsfolk we were introduced to. I was given an ARC of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
