Things have not been going well. He lost his job, his home, and his girlfriend is sleeping with his best friend. Life just doesn’t seem worthwhile anymore.
But he has a plan. He will bring suffering to every single person who hurt him. Every cruel act visited upon him will be met with grave retribution.
At the age of four, Ahmed I. Nasser’s parents decided that the best way to keep a hyperactive child occupied was to teach him how to read and constantly bombard him with books. Since then, the world of imagination has constantly consumed him. He quickly decided that the only way to feel fulfilled was to spend his time writing one story after the other, even opting out of a career as a pediatrician, despite ten years of struggling through med-school.
Influenced by Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, he has been writing since the age of 12 while travelling the world with his family. Now, finally settled in Egypt, he divides his time between teaching Middle School English Literature and finding the best ways to scare his family and friends.
This is Gonna Hurt by A. I. Nasser is really a very short, 20-minute punch-to-the-throat, horror tale that is textbook svelte. The narrative revolves around a sad-sack, wronged by the parents that birthed him and betrayed by coworkers / significant others. He decides to take matters into his own hands to take revenge on those in his immediate orbit. The story is reminiscent and almost on a par with Bierce's An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
This was an impressive, free offering by the gang at Scare Street, and although I have a few complaints, this story is near-perfect. Because it is such a short tale, I don't feel comfortable communicating in this review some gripes that would involve a spoiler, so just take it with a grain of salt that there are some, but I still would call this a very high recommend. Check it out, if you're a horror fan / junkie like me. It's free and a very short read that is reminiscent of all great horror short stories.
This is Gonna Hurt by A.I. Nasser is a short story that redefines horror. Now this is a very short story so there isn't much I can say without giving up spoilers. What I can say is that if I could have given this a 10 it would have easily deserved it. Keeping it short the story revolves around Philip whose whole world has come tumbling down around him and he has decided that those to blame must be made to pay. I know, I know .. you're thinking what's so special about that. Trust me when I say that what happens from that point to the end is the twist of all twist in the history of horror. I never saw it coming. The story is well written and paced perfectly so that the ending hits you like a brick wall. Bravo, this is already and most likely going to be my pick for my "Best Short Story" in horror for my reading year 2021. Get it, read it and be blown away.
I didn't want to rate this because I don't usually read pure horror, it's completely out of my realm of usual reads. I like dark if it comes with a bit of romance or erotica but just not sure how to rate this. Writing was good, glad it was short, kept me riveted, and surprised at the end so if you tied me to a chair and beat an answer out of me I would have to give it 4 stars!
by takes us into Philip's mind, giving us a front-row seat as he exacts vengeance on those he blames for ruining his life.
The story is written in the third person, primarily from Philip's perspective, with one section narrated from the point of view of a Detective.
Despite enduring a failed relationship, losing his home and job, and being blacklisted, Philip harbours an unhealthy degree of rage. His intense desire to kill underscores his mental instability. Each scene where harm is inflicted is described in detail, immersing the reader, making them feel present in the room. The story culminates in a twist, making the ending unpredictable. While the twist adds intrigue, the story overall feels somewhat average and reads more like an excerpt than a complete short story. Hence, my rating below:
I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to lovers of psychological thrillers with a touch of slasher, who just want a quick read to pass the time.
I hate it when these shorts throw in these random ass plot twists! And I hate how I fall for them even more 😤😤😤
Twist or no twist, this is actually kind of a sad story. What seemed like a bloody chilling revenge story at the start, quickly developed into something deeper.
I was hoping that it would be gorier based on the title and the cover, but the twist made up for the lack of gore. The ending literally made me laugh out loud, so I give it a solid 4 star rating.
Great story with an amazing twist! The ending really took me by surprise. The only reason this didn't get 5 stars from me is because there were several editing errors that took me out of the immersion. Some were easy to get past but others weren't.
Man, I really liked this! Wasn't expecting that ending. Very well done physiological horror! I highly recommend this for fans of horror and short stories. :)
Well, that was a fabulous half an hour that I have spent on a story! It's vicious and gruesome with an unexpected ending. If you have a half an hour, give it a go! It's over on Amazon, for free last time I checked.
Strange story. At first I thought it was kind of sick and thought about not finishing it, but I stayed with it to the end. I then re-read the ending, then read it again. Nice. Read the whole thing. It won't hurt.
A very short book, written in the third person and extremely...odd! Without giving spoilers, I think mental health issues is at the forefront here. Leaves you with a sickly feeling and a big question...of why???
This audiobook is more advanced than I've heard in a while. You had the actual noises of slaps, grunts, and more. It was incredible. The start with Susan was hard to listen to her, the grunts so real, her struggle believable. But then Susan's story comes out and the reason why Phillip has kidnapped her, to begin with. We then in the following part learn about Steven and why he was kidnapped and tortured.
A line like "If Only" he could turn back time had me curious, it's something we all feel at one point or another. His parents... it was a hard book to listen to but it's very interactive.
This book is gruesome, and dark, going with ease through the tale of pain and punishment. This is Gonna Hurt is a dark and twisty tale keeping you intrigued with each passing moment.
It's hard for me to give a thorough review of a short story. In this case I was recommended this author by a friend. I chose to read this short story before I read anything longer to make sure the writing clicked with me and I could vibe with it. I'm rating this based on a few things. There were no editing issues the story was concise explained and wrapped up in the 22 pages and it was engaging. It gave what felt like a full story. I didn't feel cheated out of something because it was too short or not completed to my satisfaction. So over all what I got from this is that yeah I'm going to read more of this author and I look forward to it. I feel like novellas are like an infomercial for authors like oooh ahhhh see what I can do do you like because wait there's more....
Philip thought he had it all. He’d bought his own home several years ago, planning on getting married and raising a family in the nice, quite neighborhood.
And now, Philip has a…guest…in his garage.
Philip’s life has been ruined. He can’t get another job; his ex and her current FB have blackballed him in their industry. He’ll soon lose his home and be penniless. They’ve destroyed him.
The backstory is a slow reveal. How Susan was an intern when the two met. How they worked their way up the corporate ladder—together. And how she eventually moved on.
Surprisingly shocking ending. This would have been really strong, but the finally twist is just sort of an eye roll.
In this short story, a man decided to get revenge on those that wronged him. His ex-girlfriend and his best friend that she left him for. His parents that tried to control him. He has some good claims for feeling wronged but it still doesn't give him the leeway to do what he has planned. Or is there more to the story?
Even though you find yourself leaning towards sympathy towards the main character, it never becomes likable. So it is hard to care what happened to him and what will happen.
The story follows Philip, a deeply-frustrated man who has lost his girlfriend to his best friend, his home, his job, and has never been fully supported by his parents. Thus, he decides to enact some revenge which is both violent and personal. It’s pretty extreme stuff. Uncomfortable to read, but very effectively written.
An interesting short story, I was a bit put off in the opening scene - but I kept going and I’m pleased I did. The twist (which I won’t ruin for you) is little short of brilliant.
I was liking it up until that ending with the twist because what in the world? So this guy is wanting revenge on the people that wronged him. Ex girlfriend, even his parents. The title his his catch line. However the ending ruined this for me. Was creepy and sadistic then that, sorry but the ending didn't like.
First book read for 2025 Winterween event on Instagram and YouTube by Gabbyreads. Read a book in the dark, a horror book, and read a novella prompts.
This is a short story by A.I. Nasser. I had never read one of his books before so I didn’t know what to expect. I have to say I came away pleased.
The story was predictable but the ending wasn’t. I found the writing to be quite good. There was only one spot where I think the wrong word was used, but now I can’t find it.
Anyway, it was well worth the 20 minutes to read it. I have a few of his other books/short stories and I’m looking forward to reading them as well.
I rather liked the direction the story took. How many of us have wanted the revenge the story tells; but lack the guts or the sacrifice to make it happen? I believe Phillip, the main character was entitled to his feelings and rightly so. He was pushed into his actions. But like any short story, there is always a twist. I liked the way this twist was rolled out; but would have been happier with where the direction of the ending was headed. A good quick read.
This was an excellently written short story. While there wasn't much character development, none was really required to drive the story to its surprising, and quite shocking ending. Very quickly paced (it WAS a short story, after all) with no unnecessary "fluff" to distract the reader, I was pleasantly aghast at reaching the "shock-it-to-me" conclusion. A really Goodread! "
Philip is determined to right every wrong, or perceived wrong that has been done to him. He exacts his revenge, slow and determined. But things are not always how they appear....
This was an interesting read, and the ending took me by surprise (and no, I am not going to share that with you - you have to find it out on your own). Suffice to say, it gave me a few goosebumps on my arms!
Interesting and short read -highly enjoyable with a twist you won't see coming!
