Today was supposed to be the best day of my life to date.
Instead, it’s the worst.
My long-term boyfriend just dumped me on our anniversary. Worse? He admitted to cheating on me. With seven other girls.
I’m not going to sit around crying over him. I’m going to make up for lost time. I’m going to make a bucket list of steamy adventures—my own personal f*ckit list.
And for starters, there’s my best friend. The one I’ve known all my life, the one it would be most impossible to hook up with. But he’s sexy, tall, built. Everything my ex isn’t. And he’s willing
This one is really difficult to rate so let me explain.
1. This edition (the one labeled “The Best Friend) is a short 40 page story. I purchased it for free over the weekend (though I think it’s now .99cents).
2. There is also a full novel version (approx 230 page) apparently with almost the exact same cover. Very confusing. I probably should have read the full version (had I known it existed) because I prefer full length to a few chapters any day and this premise seemed like it had the potential to be developed into something more.
3. This short version is essentially a lengthy sex scene between a girl, Amanda, and her long time friend, Scott. Scott is mighty talented in the bedroom I might add. ;-)
4. The ending left me a little confused as to whether Amanda and Scott were going to pursue a relationship or she was going to carry on with her list. The full novel says there’s an HEA, but I think I’d need more safety details before continuing.
3.5 stars. I've gone back and forth on which rating to give, but in the end (since half stars are not an option) I had yo give it only three. This is for three main reasons: lenth, plot, and kink.
Okay, the kink is minimal, but I'll explain later.
So, length. I don't think it took me an hour to read this - and I read at a snail's pace. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it makes this little novella very clearly a PWP (porn without plot for the uninitiated). How can you really have depth if you only have the first forty pages of a book? Simple, unless you're writing an atmospheric ghost story, you can't. Period. You can't even info dump your way out of it! (Thankfully, info dumping was NOT one of my issues with this story.) In the end, I wanted more feom this story and I didn't get it. It doesn't make it bad, but it wasn't enough either.
Which brings me to the plot - or the complete lack thereof. The funny thing is, I can see the potential for plot here. Woman is dumped and heartbroken. Best friend has always been waiting in the wings. But MC is scared of finding love again. She tries to keep him at a distance, but she can't fight the love blooming in her heart even as she triesto sleep her way around it.
See? Plot. But do we get any of that? No. Instead we get about seven prgasms (ten if you include his) and an otherwise casual seemingly f-buddy relationship. (Or the beginning of one.)
And here's the thing, I don't mind the explicit sex. I don't go looking for it for reasons that are my own, but I don't shy from it when presented. I think a woman's sexuality and confidence are important. I encourage us all to be brave and be okay with liking sex. (Getting off the soapbox now...) But I also think that sex is so much better in a story with plot. Give us something other than him putting his thing in her thing. I mean, really. I get the mechanics pf it, okay?
Call me old fashioned, but I like a little romance in my romance novels.
Finally, reason three: kink. Which doesn't mean kink so much as implausible sex. Really? Five orgasms in a night? And he manages to find his pwn release THREE times in one morning? Um, no, not likely. Plausibility is my issue here, though goven that this is PWP, I suppose it doesn't really matter anyway. But a little believability would be nice.
Now that I've listed my issues, I will say this: the writing wasn't bad. Yes, it was erotica, but it was pretty well done. I didn't have to force myself to keep going (and trust me, there's some pretty bad stuff out there). I liked the relationship between Scott and Alison. And I even liked the premise of the list - even if I felt some of it was pretty implausible.
So, would I recommend? Yes, but only if you like reading smut and don't mind short stories. Don't pick this up if you're uncomfortable reading about sex; you won't like it. And expect to have to buy more books to get a FULL novel. But all in all, it's not bad.
This is a very short story but packed with comfort, friends, and super sexy scenes. There’s more parts to the story, just another ploy to spend more money on 40 page stories instead of just selling a normal length story for a few dollars.
I really liked what we got here but it made me want more. Which is likely the intent. I loved the relationship we learn about, even though we learn about the BFF's very quickly. The hot level was ridiculously delicious and I will be devouring more, I have no doubts. Had no idea it ended the way it did and that's why the 3 stars. It so much of a cliffhanger, which can be enticing, as an abrupt end.
I really don't know what to say about this book. It's cute, sexy and fun at times, reserved at times but fast paced too. The sex was hot but tame too. I guess with the title I was looking for something different because it stood out but then it turned out to be the same a bit but different but still a great read.
It is hard to believe Amanda's boyfriend of 6 years was boring in the bedroom. Scott her best friend is the one that was always there for her. I am so glad she had him to show her what she had been missing in all these years. What girl wouldn't want a guy they are comfortable with to show them the ropes.
I did not expect the book to go from a break up of a long-term relationship to a sex-capade between long-term best friends. It was hot sex. I would like to know what happens in the future between them.
