The Backworlds Books 1, 2, and 3: The Backworlds, Stopover at the Backworlds Edge, and Boomtown Craze. In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendants to survive in a harsh universe. This set contains the first 3 novels in the science fiction series, The Backworlds. A space opera adventure. The Backworlds After the war with the Foreworlders, Backworlders scatter across the remaining planets. Competition is fierce, and pickings are scant. Scant enough that Craze’s father decides to improve his fortunes by destroying his son. He tells his only boy their moon isn’t big enough for them both and gives Craze a ticket for the next transport leaving the space dock. Stopover at the Backworlds Edge Revenge is on Craze’s mind. He chews on it every day along with the relentless dust on Pardeep Station. He dreams of grander wealth, enough to make his father choke. That’s the dream consuming him when the interstellar portal opens, spitting out a ship that should no longer exist. A battleship spoiling for a fight. Yet the war with the Foreworlds ended two generations ago. Boomtown Craze Craze is only days away from the grand opening of his shiny new tavern. The starway opens, bringing in a loony Backworlder intent on mucking up his carefully laid plans. Gaunt and trembling, she claims her spaceship is possessed. She also has a connection to the underworld, threatens to end Craze’s prosperity before it begins.
M. Pax is author of the sci-fi series, The Backworlds, and the new adult urban fantasy Hetty Locklear series. A Browncoat and SG fan, she's also slightly obsessed with Jane Austen. In the summers she docents as a star guide at Pine Mountain Observatory where the other astronomers now believe she has the most extensive collection of moon photos in existence. No fear, there will be more next summer. She lives in stunning Central Oregon with the Husband Unit and two lovely, spoiled cats. Want to connect? Visit
Such a pity. Setting really cool and the idea about the different ‘species is fantastic and something new to me. Could have been such a great setting for a space opera. But the style?!? Constantly repeating the motivations of every character, no movement within the story as if I had to stop every 5 minutes for a question that has been asked already. There is just no flow and no pace and no action (I do not mean fighting action but just something happening). In addition some childish things like weapons called ‘frizzers which are really really really bad and chocolate being more expensive than gold pushed me to stop reading. Sorry, I wanted to like it.
A trio of stories that encompasses many races and worlds. Really interesting and fun, though often serious. Many twists and turns during the adventures, with great characters who work well alone but even better when their actions unite them in one place. Really liked this book.
Space Opera, while broadly accurate, is an understatement of the wild yet extremely well constructed story universe M. Pax had created in her Backworlds novels. The lead character is really fun. The plot in each book is full of everything you'd want in a sci fi novel, with well developed characters, action and excellent writing. A highly recommended wild ride.
I liked the humor and play on words contained within these three novels. The development and introduction of the main six characters are a interesting interactions between all involved as the story progresses. The novels should be read in order because each novel builds upon the one before it.
I had to purchase the 3 book set after reading the first back world's. A good book. Good storyline, well written, gotta love the characters. Very cute story. Will be looking for more
