I discovered this book after searching for tales about Maui that are told by people from Hawaii and the Pacific Islands as an alternate perspective on the demigod to Disney's Moana (which my children and I love). Knowing Disney's penchant for changing their source material (Andersen's Little Mermaid as one of the most drastic, though I'm sure others could better argue it), I didn't want my kids to assume they knew who Maui was based only on the film. Ahuli'i's story depicts Maui as a young boy who is determined to bring more islands to the surface of the ocean from where they're sleeping below. His magical fish hook is dramatically drawn and is the focus of much of the action of the piece, so my toddler who cheerfully shouts "Maui hook!" around our house is delighted with this tale. It's also calm enough in tone and language that it's a useful way to coax my very active toddler into bed. Tsong's textured images are gorgeous, and each time I read the book, I find something new to look at--a wonderful perk in a board book!
All of Ahuli'i's stories that we've read so far are big hits in our house. I'd love to see more stories done in this format: simplified for bedtime for the youngest readers, but with a complex enough vocabulary that adults won't get bored.

April 24, 2020A Hawaiian Legend! A boy named Maui who uses a hook to grab land from under the water. I would have loved for this book to have more details and be a tad bit longer, I will have to do additional research if there are any other versions of this legend out there.

This is a proper story to show summer school kids some of the adventures of Maui before he was the fully grown demi god portrayed in Moana. Beautifully illustrated

August 17, 2020A great way to start learning about Maui for students. It is just one amongst many versions in Hawaii. It is a good introduction to the Demigod that more people learn about in Moana.
