Kate O’Hara needed to find peace after the death of her husband and headed to a remote cottage in Tasmania. The beauty was a balm on Kate’s chaotic mind; the river at the front of the cottage a serene and calming influence. The mysterious white cat which wouldn’t let her near was a companion of sorts as Kate moved through her days, painting and resting.

The old dusty painting of a boatman on the river captured Kate’s interest. Devlin had lived back in the days of the convicts and as she learned more about the past, she found herself captivated. But it was what happened next which terrified her

Wow! What a brilliant read! I absolutely devoured When Shadows Fall by Aussie author Kaye Dobbie. Filled with intrigue, the time travel aspect was done incredibly well seamlessly in fact. Such a satisfying and entertaining read I couldn’t have picked better for my last of 2018. Highly recommended.

I loved this book
Beautifully written and the narrator did a fantastic job of the different voices and accents
Time travel using a white cat?? Yes and it’s so well told that you believe this could happen
A love story at its best without being soppy or over the top
You want them together, you wish she’d stay in the past so that they can be, you hope nothing happens to get in the way.
This book is lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it

Kaye Dobbie’s ‘When Shadow’s Fall is without doubt one of the best and most creative time travel stories I have ever read. I was captivated by the style and story from the very start and held completely enthralled to the end.

Kaye takes us on a spellbinding journey through the very likeable character, Kate O’Hara, an actress who has recently lost her husband. She ventures to a secluded rustic cottage on the banks of a river in Tasmania, to find some quiet time to reflect and paint. From the very beginning her interlude is anything but calming or uneventful for she becomes caught up in the historical mystery of a missing boatman named Devlin, from Australia’s convict days.

A ghost, a mysterious white cat, a fascinating painting and a cottage that teeters on two worlds and timelines, draws us hypnotically like a thread through the eye of a needle into riveting drama that unfolds in ways one would never expect. History comes alive, literally, for Kate, as she becomes part of its rustic fabric. There she faces choices that will affect her presence/existence in the modern world.

Kaye renders an ending that is both satisfying and exciting for the reader who is cheering Kate on to maintain the happiness she has found in another realm, after being lost for years in an unhappy marriage. The description, dialogue and plot pacing are perfect. Not to mention the fascinating characters.

It is a story about self-discovery, finding freedom and how to hold on to it. But most of all, it is a haunting love story that crosses the barriers of time.

I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a unique romantic time travelling historical mystery. It is 5 stars from me! 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

1.5-2 stars.

It was fine but the plot moved very quickly and the romance was the epitome of instalove. It was short read which I thought was one if its better aspects tbh. If it was longer the author could have taken her time with the exploring the themes more throughly and giving the characters more depth. This also takes place both in 90s Australia and Colonial Australia so that was not my favourite. Hearing Aussie accents is so weird to me lol.

I particularly liked the setting. Not often rivers are the backdrop of a story. Something I'm very familiar with and miss so much.
