Scrooge McFuck

Rate this book
Piper Stone’s hunky, rude, entitled, Scrooge of a boss is pushing her buttons every day, but he’s taken it too far, this time. Saying she couldn’t take the holidays off was one thing; preventing her to go home to her sick child? Not happening. She has zero regrets when she resigns.

Bennet McFinnley can’t believe his annoyingly perfect personal assistant has actually resigned from her cushy, highly paid position, and he intends to tell her exactly what he thinks about it.

I read a few of these short, smutty books and there is a pattern you need to know if you want to read them: they end abruptly. It happens in all of them. The guy decides he's going to marry her and that's it.

Hmm... it's almost like the men are making the decisions about the women's futures... but that could never happen in real life, right??

Oh yeah. Right.

So this book is about a guy who falls for his secretary. Now, this guy is a DICK - like seriously horrible. He does so many things that she could sue his ass off for and take his company, but she she puts up with it because their parents are friends and she loves his dad who hired her. She is also desperate for money and he pays well. But, seriously, this man needed to take a thousand hours of office etiquette and sensitivity training. Then, be forced to read the labor codes. Then, maybe some shock therapy whenever he considered fucking his girlfriend on his desk with her screaming throughout the whole office for him to fuck her in the ass. Yes. That happened.

I think he saw the same one and also took it as an instructional video.

Then, he pushes her too far and she quits. Good. I was on #TeamQuit, but I was also on #TeamBallPunch and that didn't happen. You win some, you lose some.

He gets furious that she has the nerve to quit on him. How dare she think she can leave this amazing job of being demeaned, yelled at, forced to listen to loud sex every other day, and treated as cruelly as possible? So, he goes to confront her at her house and gets his eyes opened. She is a single mother who lives in a shit-hole trying to support her kid. Who was sick. Which is why she needed to go home early and he refused.

And, luckily, he does realize what a huge dick he is. So, he does a complete 180 and becomes the nicest guy ever. Which happens all the time, right? Giant assholes always realize they were wrong and change into the best people. I heard Mother Theresa was a giant asshole when she was younger....

Anyway, I like him after his assholectomy. He's cute with her kid.

When I saw this in the kindle freebie section, and I saw the title, I kind of had to read it. And it was exactly as I expected. Fun, enjoyable, but not a new favourite by any means. Just a good time. Good enough for me to stay up till 1am reading it all in one go.

I really loved Piper as a main character. She is so genuine and down to earth. I love how much she loves her daughter. It was clear that her daughter is her priority and always come first. I admire how she is powering through life despite what it throws at her.

I was quite enjoying the Christmas Carol retelling elements to it but they were ditched after the first few scenes, which is a shame. I think it if leaned into it a bit more throughout the book it could've been quite good.

The romance happens way too fast, and it's really cheesy, but that is was entirely what I expected (and wanted) on the night I started reading this. I loved the cute intelligent child and the romance was kinda cute sometimes. And I always enjoy a good romance trope.

There is one steamy scene and it was not the best. It was short and quick so I didn't mind but the choice of wording throughout it did not gel with me at all >.>

And I wasn't a fan of the male love interest. He does things that are way out of order (without Piper's permission) when it is none of his business and/or is definitely overstepping by doing so. The book ends before we see the consequence of his overstepping actions, which I was not happy with. The ending was a bit too quick and abrupt. This could've been longer!

Not as good as #1 was. It was slower paced, the male mc wasn't as likeable, and the steam factor was lower. Considering the steam factor in these are low already, that cost it at least a half star.
The slower pace, less humor, the likeability of the male mc and a few other things cost brought my enjoyment down quite a bit.

These do make great palate cleansers. But I wish this one had been better.

I also wish they all had more Intense Adult scenes. But, all in all, they are fun reads.

Hmm, not adding "proper" epilogues seems to be a pattern with this author, but that's two of her stories I've read so far and enjoyed both.

This is another short romance, this time featuring a demanding, pretty much asshole of a boss and his long suffering assistant. The two have been in the same circle for years, with their parents being friends, but didn't really know each other until Piper starts working for Bennet.

They both find one another attractive, but Bennet has made some assumptions about Piper that made him keep his distance and treat her less than great, while Piper has too many things to worry about, including her young daughter, and needs the job no matter how much of a prick Bennet is to her.

Eventually things between them come to a head, and Piper resigns. Bennet doesn't really believe that she meant it until she doesn't show up for work, at which point he tracks her down and realizes how wrong his assumptions were.

At the same time he falls for her daughter, and his walls come down far enough for him to realize that his feelings for Piper are not insignificant either.

Piper can't deny her own feelings either, especially since he has become a new man, taking excellent care of her and her daughter, and when she agrees to return to work for him, treating her as well as he possibly can, with the tension simmering between them.

The eventual happy ending is satisfying, although, as I mentioned already, I would have preferred a longer epilogue with a glimpse into their happily ever after.

The series continues with the Carter's assistant Lucy from the previous book, and his best friend Trick in Bring on the Psychobitch.

The title is so funny! :-D And I couldn't resist it for Christmas.

The plot is one of those that immediately captures my attention. An angry boss who's mean to his wonderful assistant because he can't resist her beauty. He's unfair to her and she thinks these naughty, vengeful names in her head for him. It' fun, especially in reference to Dickens' Mr. Scrooge.

I think the story is nicely written, the inner dialogues are appealing and really show Piper's personality and family situation as well as Ben's evolution and his yearning for a woman to spend his life with. I enjoyed the very romantic and platonic relationship that develops between them when he finds out who she is and how wrong he's been about her. The Mini-Piper scenes are really cute and the romance is lovely.

Even though there are some typos in the end and it called for an epilogue (which I believe will happen in a future novel including a new couple), this Christmas romance ends with heat and promise, and I liked it a lot. I'll keep reading this author.

Decent enough story if you consider the title, so you're not expecting great literature. It all pretty much happened on the surface but it was a fun couple of hours.

The title of this one sucked me in as I've not read the first one in the series or anything from this author before I thought why not. Super quick read that ended a little abruptly for me, felt a little lacking, not sure if it continues in another book, not eager to go out and find it really.
The H was a major jerk right up until maybe the last chapter or two, not sure as to why some women find that attractive, but each to their own. The excuse was because he found her attractive and was trying to avoid her, oh and he was dumped by his ex....well duh, he is a jerk!!!!
It was an easy to read book, just not really my cup of tea.

I admit it - I bought this one for the title. As the title suggests it's a holiday rom-com. Definitely made me smile and I might have laughed out-loud once or twice. It looses one-star for an improbable plot point.

Major plot spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.

Initial thoughts: This needed to be longer. That ending ended way too soon.

This started off a little rocky for me with Bennett having a sexual encounter with his girlfriend in his office while Piper, his executive assistant, could clear hear them in vivid detail. Other stories have done this as well where heroine listens to the hero copulate with another woman, and I personally don’t like that. It can rarely get away with it for me, and this was one of those stories that it didn’t get away with it. I just didn’t see the point of it in this instance especially since this story was on the short side. Okay, I do get because it was another obstacle for Bennett and Piper to face to before getting together, however it just made me cringe. I thought unnecessary. I think the story could have started off it a million different ways than that. It wasn’t even the part that he had a girlfriend at the time that bothered me, but it was the fact that Piper was hearing them doing a heated encounter. It just was a personal turn off for me.

To add to that point, since this book was on the shorter side, I thought there was a lot of unnecessary bits that where in there in lieu of more of the romance between Piper and Bennett. For instance, Bennett’s hookup with his girlfriend. Then there was other stuff like finding out about the girlfriend that did free him up, but it just took up valuable space in this story. If was a longer book, it would have been fine, but that wasn’t the case. There were other things too that it took a little bit to get to the crux of the romance. Either the first half needed to be paired down, or this should have been longer. I would have liked it to be longer myself. I just wanted to get to it.

The first half did show very well and with a lot of detail of how this was an enemies to lovers situation. The way Bennett treated Piper when she was working for him was just horrible. He was beyond a jerk. Piper’s nickname for him, which happens to be the title of this story, was duly earned. Beyond earn. I wanted to knock some sense into him at his cruel ness of Piper. Supposedly his rudeness was to hide his deep desire for her since he believed he couldn’t have her because of having a girlfriend and his misconceptions that she was a bratty heiress. It just lead to some really heated moments that came off perfectly. I will say that it didn’t come off as playful banter. It came off a little on the harsh side. So, at first it was hard to get on Bennett’s side.

But then the switch was flipped, this became a different story and a different Bennett. That was when this became absolutely fantastic. I started to get it and love it. Once Bennett met Piper’s daughter Maya and started taking care of Piper when she was sick, a whole new Bennett appeared. I loved him a whole lot more than the guy that was before. He showed off his kindness and tenderness that he was more than capable of that I didn’t think he was in the beginning. The way he was with Maya was totally sweet and adorable. I could see him fall in love with Maya right before my eyes. It warmed my heart so much. I loved seeing the caretaker in him take shape. I wanted more of that side than the other because he was such a sweetheart.

In a very short amount of time, he not only bonded with Maya, but he vowed to become friends with Piper. They started to build that and connect on levels they hadn’t before. Showing a side to Piper that he never showed her before. Piper liked him and started accepting that she was in fact attraction to him like he was to her. Hence the romance started to build after that.

My only problem with it was that the pacing was done in very quick succession. A lot of the reason being that this was a shorter type story. I would liked to have seen more built up. More anticipation. Just more time of Piper and Bennett spending together and getting know each other as they grew closer and closer with one another. It just happened really, really fast. It was almost in a blink of an eye that they hated each other then they getting together. Partly that was due to Bennett’s 180 degree personality chance once he learned how wrong about Piper he was, but I would have liked seen more relationship development between the two of them.

I did love though when he had the realization that Piper and Maya were his girls, and that he couldn’t live without them. Yes, it happened very quickly, but it felt genuine. I could feel his heart nearly exploding with feelings for these ladies. I loved how he went after them because he wanted to spend time with them for Christmas because he considered them his family at that point. It was sweet to see Maya reaction when Bennett came through those cabin doors for the first time. It was pretty clear that she was attached to him as he was to her. It was nice to see them spend time together for Christmas.

I did think that the lovemaking scene happened a bit abruptly. It happened way sooner than I thought it was going to be. I thought he had to make up for a lot more before they went there with each other. They really didn’t do anything romantic before this. They were just friends and enjoying spending time together. That was it. There was no kiss. There were no heated make out scenes or anything of that sort. it was just like they jumped in right away with the physical intimacy. In my opinion, there needed to be a little more built up to that moment. Granted the scene was hot and spicy. I enjoyed reading it, but I think there needed to be a little more pacing between them being romantic to them going to bed with each other. I’m just not a fan when they seemingly jump into the physical right away without a lot of build up leading to that.

That’s not to say that I didn’t believe there was an emotional connection between them. I very much did. Bennett more than proved how much he cared about both Piper and Maya during the course of the story. He showed in a million different ways. Someways where in grand gesture ways like gifting them with a trip or having Piper’s ex finally tracked down in order to sign the divorce papers. He went over the top of showing his feelings on the page. I just wish there was more meeting of the minds before it became physical. More romance basically.

Then the way that it ended was just way too soon. There were a lot of unanswered questions (which I later got answered after I read the short story containing them. Read that review if you want my thoughts on that one). It literally ended after they were physically intimate. There were no words. There was no conversation. There were no reveals of the lengths he went through in order to make her life better. There wasn’t even a Christmas morning scene with Maya. There was nothing more. It was like I was missing half the story with that ending. I felt like there should have been something more. It gave me that “That was it type of feel. I will take this back to the beginning of this review and say that this needed to be a little of longer format so it did feel so abrupt and rushed in some places. It was too quick and too easy. I needed more.

What I found with this story was what was good I needed more of, and what I deemed unnecessary needed to lessened. Either that or this needed to be a longer story. The first half did establish the friction between Piper and Bennett, but I think that could have been pared down more in lieu of more romance stuff between Piper and Bennett. When Bennett finally had that lightbulb moment and did his transformation, then I began to love this. I loved how he was with Maya. I loved how he took care of Piper. I loved all the grand gestures he made towards both them. I loved how he realized that they were his girls/family and no one else would do. I just loved seeing the sweetheart side of him highlighted. I wanted more of that. I wanted more romance and relationship building between Piper and Bennett. Things happened in very quick succession from enemies to friends to lovers. I needed a bit more of transition there. I didn’t need the opening scene. I wish that was done in different way. I loved how both Maya and Piper had nicknames for him. Not the most flattering ones as you can see from the title. I loved when Maya called Bennett her Ebenezer. That just put a smile on my face and just some of things that Maya said him was just stinking cute and adorable. I loved all their interactions with one another. I think that was the highlight of this story.

So overall, I did enjoy it. I wish it was longer because I think that would have helped a lot in pacing and development. But once I got over the first half, I really started loving it hence the four star rating.

This story ended up being very different than what I was expecting ... but I still enjoyed it thoroughly. After the first chapter, I didn't know how the author was going to redeem Ben, but she did. I loved him by the end. I smiled a lot while reading about Pipper, Mia and Ben. Well worth my time.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I have to say it is not at all what I expected based on the title. It was actually a great updated version of a Christmas Carol. Bennett aka Ebenezer is Piper's demanding boss who can't see beyond his workaholic ways. Piper desperately needs money to raise her daughter otherwise she would quit. But then Bennett realizes not everything is at it seems and there is more to life than work. The secondary characters in this novella apparently intertwine with one another so it looks as though we'll see more of them in future books. This was a fun Christmas novella sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

Sweet read!

Aw really like this one. I have to say I almost didn't finish it because of the beginning chapter but as I read the story it got way better. Bennett is a hard working male who has his priorities screwed up. Piper is his Executive Assistant and she takes all of his surely and rude attitude with a smile, all because of her little girl. However after one hectic day when she has to leave work early, she finally has had enough of his bad attitude and resigns. Poor Bennett, the best thing he ever had, was right in front of him the whole time. He does redeem himself and in the end, him, Piper and his little honey bee, end on a HFN note! Loved it! 4 stars****

So, I actually read (listened to) this book twice, back to back. The first run through, I was trying to pay attention, but was listening while I was working and I think some things got lost. Once I got to the end, I realised that it was really cute, and I needed to go back and fill in all those things that I thought I may have missed. The second time through made it that much better. (I suppose paying attention will do that...)

I am a huge fan of the dickish boss and the tolerant-until-she-isn't assistant trope, and add in that this one also had a single mom who would do anything for her kid, and that it is set at Christmas, I just knew it would be a hit for me. 'Scrooge' was instantly attached to her kid, and that always does something for me too. Thought it did seem that the romance part of it all came on a bit too fast for me, I feel like it was kind of okay in this case because these two had known each other for years through their parents before she started working for him.

There isn't a ton of depth in this short story, probably due to its length and that it's written in third person, but it was still really fun and cute to me. The audiobook was done in a sort of duet narration style, and both new-to-me narrators did a great job. I'd happily pick up the rest of this series, as I assume those books are about his small group of friends.

The title is sort of like click-bait. What I thought would be a fun and naughty novella just felt more meh than anything. It didn’t help that it opens with the heroine overhearing the hero (her boss) doing his girlfriend in his office - and apparently it’s a regular occurrence. The rest of the novella actually ends up being a bit of a slow burn. The author made efforts to make the Bennett somewhat sympathetic, but he just never felt worthy to me. I did enjoy the inclusion of Piper’s daughter - kids almost always make a story better. But even she wasn’t enough to save this tale. I also sort of got knocked out of the reading experience every time the author used a British colloquialism since the book is set in New York City and the characters seem to be American. There was also a very off-color joke made regarding Hitler and Jews... so I probably won’t be looking to read any thing else from this author.

Book #3 of mini-contemporaryathon May 2020.

Like ALMOST a 4.

So in book #1 (Shy Girls Write it Better) there was an excerpt of this. Book #1 was meh, but this excerpt seemed amazing. And the title was hilarious. I just had to find out more. I was not disappointed.

I really liked Ben and Piper's chemistry. Their character development was done really well for a novella length. Piper's daughter Maya was adorable. It also ended abruptly, but I felt like I got a whole story. The one thing that didn't make it 4 is that there was two times that their were random flashbacks in the middle of the chapter that diverted the story a little. Just plot development was off. Could have deserved a better edit. But definitely enjoyed.

No real interest in the rest of the series though. I'm good to stop here.

Just like the first story ‘Shy girls write it better this also was a quick, light, fun read (novella length). You don’t have to read the first story to read this one. It can be read as a standalone. If you liked the first book you will this like one too, it had the same vibe to it. The story was well developed for a short story but again I would have liked another scene or chapter at the end (= an epilogue).
I liked Piper’s character and her daughter Maya was so cute. Bennet went from grumpy boss to helpful friend. I liked his change.

‘Scrooge McFuck was an entertaining, light short read.

These books are very short and super fast reads. However, I hated that the book opens up with the heroine hearing the hero have very loud and passionate sex with his, stereotypical evil bitch one dimensional gold-digging girlfriend in chapter one. Smart of the author for not putting that scene during the teaser at the end of the previous book.

Also, I hate it when authors write children like adults. We have a four year old opening the front door and using the phrase, "Let me assure you," to talk to the main guy.

Best. Title. Ever.

May Sage has written a fun, flirty enemies to lovers romance about disinherited single mom Piper Stone and her boss, rich Bennett McFinley (whose grouch attitude and numerous conquests have caused his secretary to give him the nickname Scrooge McFuck). When he refuses to give her the day off (not realizing she needed to care for a sick child), Piper quits, and Bennett learns more about her than he ever thought he wanted to know.

I really love this novel. It's fun, and the characters are likable (even Bennett, eventually). It's a great holiday read.

This may be my least favorite of the series so far. Probably because the best relationship in the book was between Bennet and Piper’s daughter, Mia! The daddy/daughter relationship that evolves so naturally and adorably between these two was like my favorite thing in life.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the actual relationship between Piper & Bennet. He goes from epic asshat to end all asshats to Prince Charming with his shining, check-signing Mont Blanc pen in a nanosecond. And that wasn’t even the problem. His sudden turnaround made sense within the scenario. What didn’t make sense was Piper. As a single mother, I can attest to how seductive a good father figure for your child can be. Probably the hottest thing next to a man who cooks and cleans. lol However, is it really enough to make her forget how he treated her enough to agree to marry him in a matter of weeks?

He treated her like the gum on the bottom of his expensive Italian leather shoes for MONTHS. Forced her to listen to a regular soundtrack of porn noises. Pushed her to stay late and do stupid busy work and threatened to make her work straight through Christmas! And this asscheese turns it around by taking care of when she was sick, falling for her daughter, feeding her a few times, buying off her estranged husband, and sending them on an all-expense-paid trip to Alaska? And that’s enough? You’d trust the rest of your life and your daughter’s life to this man? I have difficulty feeling it would be that easy for me. I could forgive him, maybe even consider dating him... but he would definitely have to prove the man I had known for so long was an aberration and not this suave man who seems to be my prince. Idk. Maybe I am a little too cynical from personal experience to enjoy happily ever afters like these. It’s easier in SciFi or fantasy because the level of suspension of disbelief is already higher, but in the real world... I just don’t know.

A Fun Romantic Story!

This review is from: Scrooge McFuck (Some Girls Do It Book 2) (Kindle Edition)

I've read several books by this author, and I'm totally impressed with her stories. If you, as a reader, are looking for a new author to read I highly recommend May Sage.

This story is great for fans who love a fast paced, humorous read. It's got a modern take on "THE CHRISTMAS CAROL". It's sexy, hilarious and emotionally satisfying. There are moments that will have you howling with laughter (due to antics by Maya).

Ms Sage uses vivid imagery and brillant descriptions to draw you into her world that makes you feel like you're a part of it.

Meet Ben and Piper...Ben is an arrogant wealthy man who usually gets what he wants, but does have a bad habit of working long hours including his staff. Piper is a single mom, who is trying to lead a productive life while giving her child the best. After working with each other, both have made their own opinions regarding each other. Both have lousy relationships in their past. What will it take for Ben and Piper to discover that their first impressions are wrong? Get the book, read it, and then you will know.

I recommend this book to all readers who love fun romantic stories.

I chose to review this book on my own.

Happy Reading!!
