Misadventures of a Rookie

Rate this book
Winning has always come naturally for stud ice hockey defenseman Gus “the Bus Persson. On the ice or off, he’s never had any trouble scoring, racking up goals—and girls. As the best player in his rookie class and the number-one draft pick of the Malibu Suns, he’s taking his game to the next level and is justifiably full of swagger.

So why does one of the Suns ice girls treat him like he’s invisible?

Bo St. James doesn’t have time for rookie hotshots who think their gloves don’t stink. She knows them, she works with them, she trains them. It doesn’t matter that Gus Persson is the hottest newbie she’s ever seen. She knows his type. She’s got big plans of her own, and she’s not going to let some cocky rich kid athlete keep her from her goals.

But there’s a chemistry between them they cannot deny. A lust that burns so hot, it threatens to melt the very ice on which they make their livings. The game has changed for both of them. Together, can these two play to win?

Misadventures is a romantic series of spicy standalone novels, each written or co-written by some of the best names in romance. The stories are scandalous, refreshing, and, of course, incredibly sexy. They’re the perfect bedside read, a ‘quick blush for the reader who loves a page-turning romance.

This is my first Misadventures book. I have seen them floating around for a while now, and when I saw Toni Aleo was writing one AND it was a hockey book, I decided to give it a go. Toni writes the best hockey stories!

Gus ‘the Bus P is just got drafted to play for NHL team, The Tornadoes. Temporarily he’s playing for the Suns, a lower level team and that’s where he meets Bo, a PT student. There is a thin line between love and hate when it comes to Bo and Gus. Honestly, the first 25%+ is of them bickering and I ended up skimming a lot of that, but as the story went on, it did get better for me. I started to like Gus more, the more I got to know him and it’s obvious that he and Bo have major chemistry!

I love sports romance (hockey especially) and I love Toni Aleo’s writing. Although this wasn’t my favorite book of hers, it was still enjoyable for me overall and got better the more I read. I wish we would have had more of an epilogue, I think that would have made it all the better. Misadventures with a Rookie is a sexy and fun enemies to lovers story. Recommended to those who love sports romance and that trope!

This book started off a little rough for me. Mainly because Gus Persson- the rookie hockey player and star of this book appeared to be way too much of a cocky, arrogant, insensitive manwhore for me to ever really like him.
Boy was I glad that I just kept reading it anyway- as not only did Gus do a total 180 degrees in my eyes but I think I ended up liking him even more than the "fiery" Bo.
This book was my first ever read by Toni Aleo and not only did it live up to my expectations for this Misadventures series (I have already read 5 of them) but I liked the way this story unfolded and I also liked the author's writing style.
Ultimately, I found this to be a funny, entertaining, sweet and sexy read. My only regret for this book is I would have loved it, if the author had given me either an epilogue or a longer ending.

4.5 Stars!

This book really surprised me. In the beginning, I actually thought this was going to be my first book of Toni Aleo's that I wasn't going to like. I've loved everything I have read by her to date, but I learned real quick that the Hero in this book was the exact type that I do not enjoy in my books. He's arrogant. He's a player. He thinks he's God's gifts to women and hockey and I was just as disgusted by it as our heroine was. If you start out feeling the same way...keep reading. Man did I do a 180 about Gus. By the end, he became one of my favorite types of Hero's.

The best thing about a womanizer is when they find the one woman to knock them off their feet. Gus became a new man the more time he spent with Bo. The more they were together, the more I fell in love with him right along with Bo. I am so glad I kept reading. What an amazing transformation he made as a man in love.

Bo... while I sneered right along with her in the beginning, I still thought she was way too bitter. After learning more about her situation in the last half of the book. I got it. This poor girl. She got screwed 10 ways from Sunday and I get it why she was so bitter. Be patient. Gus is good for her.

I don't always mention side characters but I got to mention Gus's parents. I loved them! I loved them almost as much as I loved our main characters. They were an awesome addition to this story. I really enjoyed this book.

Gus & Bo
Gus is a playboy mama's boy.
Bo is sassy and hates Gus from the start.

One thing I wasn't feeling was Bo going through his phone...I hate when people feel like they have to snoop. Also, big shocker ~ 3rd act breakup was for the birds! But I liked Gus's text of promises to her.

Overall, enemies to lovers is not my favorite, but I mostly enjoyed it.

Series notes:
Every book in this series is a standalone. Some are single or duo authors and some collaborations.

Favorite Quotes:

The way she looked at me, like I stole her doll and drew dicks on its mouth, revved my engines.

It had been a long time since I yearned for a woman, probably because they usually threw themselves at me. I was pretty sure the only thing redhead wanted to throw at me was a puck.

I would never intentionally hurt you. And besides, my mom would kill me if I did.

She scoffed. “Please, the only thing I thought that man was put on this earth for was to give me you. After that, he was slime. “I’m right here, Lauren. My face broke into a grin as my mom went on. “Well, obviously that’s changed. I love you, duh.

I’ll never finish loving you. It just keeps going on and on. I’ve finished a lot of things. A period during a game, a goal, and plenty of women that I shouldn’t really be bringing up, but oh well, it’s part of my point. With you it’s constant and I can’t I just can’t finish.

My Review:

I smirked my way through this witty and amusing New Adult/College/Hockey Romance, which is in all honesty, a trifecta of genres I rarely peruse. Maybe I should indulge in them more often, or maybe I should just read more of the comically talented Ms. Aleo’s work as I was engaged throughout and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was highly entertained by the premise as well as the expletive-spewing and quirky accident-prone characters with their salacious sensual scenes and inner musings, which morphed into a sweet/sizzling romance. Ms. Aleo has a wicked sense of humor and excellent pacing. I adored the character’s clever exchanges, witty quips, and saucy banter - especially those flowing from the elder Perssons who were obviously the fun parentals. More, please, Ms. Aleo. I greedily want all your naughty tales.

Misadventures with a Rookie by Toni Aleo was the tenth book in the Misadventures series by various popular best selling authors. They are all stand-alone books and can be read out of order. This was my second book of the series. It was a quick and fun read that was enjoyable and entertaining.

Bo St James was a college student that had multiple jobs to make ends meet. Two of her many positions included an internship and an Ice Girl for the Malibu Suns. The Suns were a farm team for the NHL’s Twin City Tornadoes. Bo was busy, kept her head down, her mind focused and stayed away from dating - especially hockey players. Been there. Done that. Barely lived through it. Not happening again - ever.

Gus “the Bus Persson was a rising hockey star. He was arrogant, cocky and expected to be called up to the big leagues soon. He had a reputation with the ladies for one and done and no more. He saw Bo and wanted her immediately but for once there was someone that wasn’t falling all over him and the challenge was accepted.

Aleo took us through the chase and beyond. She also slowly unraveled Bo’s layers as to why she was so hostile towards Gus. We then learn that Gus had a few nuances of his own. It was also humorous - between Gus’s family and the ER scenes, they were a trip!

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was a sweet read, but I confess, I wanted more at the end. It definitely needed an epilogue - but really I could have used a few more chapters or even a follow up novella. I loved the characters and I wanted to see a little further into the future. Furthermore, I would have liked to have seen where the object of Bo’s conflict was now. No spoilers, so no elaboration but I would think it would be pertinent to Gus being in the NHL. Another story for another day.

All the Misadventure books are stand-alones and I can’t wait to read more.

*2.5* I despise lying to children. In fact, I hate it so much that I didn't lie to my children about Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, or the tooth fairy. Why start off their innocent view of the world with untruths from the one person they should be able to implicitly trust? We still celebrate the holidays, we just do it while being honest about the history and/or legends surrounding them.

So it goes without saying that the lies in this book completely overshadowed the story for me. I think the big mystery was really easy to predict, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone else.

Gus is a huge manwhore. Bo is a spicy, wounded young woman. They have a magical spark and she is the only one that Gus wants after seeing her. A sweet sports romance, more light and fluffy than realistic.

This Book is amazing! As an avid Toni reader I appreciate all of her work but this book made me go through a variety of emotions and I found myself smiling and laughing out loud at most of the story.

Let me start by saying, the hero in this book is fantastic! It appears as though he gets everything handed to him on a silver platter but his work ethic and drive showcase the kind of man he is. This is a story about the thin line between love and hate and how easy it is to assume you think you know someone based on guilt and past experiences. Bo can't help but let her previous encounters control her opinions of Hockey players, but Gus comes in and takes on the task of proving her misconceptions wrong, and a few right. He is caring a willing to stand by Bo's side in all sorts of crazy circumstances. I found myself laughing along with the characters as the scenes were highly entertaining.

I was drawn into this story right away and when I read about Gus' family I was sucked in even more. It is a good example of how to love and support your children with friendship but still push them to work as hard as possible for the things they want and need. The same supportive relationship is built between Bo and Gus. They were able to laugh together, even in intimate moments and that is priceless in a relationship.

This book was better than I anticipated and Toni has already set the bar incredibly high. I loved this book and I will likely be finding myself rereading this book many times over.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

4.5 Stars!!!!

For some reason I thought this was part of the Assassins Series but it is not! I think this is my favorite Toni Aleo book so far. For one it was a more reasonable length because the Assassins Series each book is so incredibly LONG!!

This book was hilarious, sweet and oh so sexy!!!! These two characters were perfect and Gus’s parents were so damn funny!!

I feel like this is a real hit with some or a complete miss with others. For me it was a real hit and I did it as an audio book and I absolutely loved the narrators both male & female. They are my favorites since I have done other auto books that they narrate also.

*I voluntarily read an early copy of this title in exchange for an honest review**

The Misadventures Series has been a lot of fun with so many different and engaging books and Toni Aleo has added a clear winner to the stable!

Gus Persson has always dreamed of playing in the NHL. He was drafted by the Twin Cities Tornadoes, but the brass determined he wasn't quite ready, so he's out in California with their AHL affiliate. While he's known for bedding a different woman every night and only spending one night with them, one of the Sun's Ice Girls has caught his attention and he would like nothing more than to get to know her better.

For Bo St. James hockey has always been part of her life, but she has sworn off having any kind of relationship with a hockey player. She's totally focused on completing school and working. She's all about reaching her goals and not about letting a man influence any of her decisions.

As Bo and Gus get to know one another, Bo wants to hate him, but the chemistry they share is difficult to deny. As they spend more time together, it becomes clear that they may actually be exactly what the other needs in their life. Can they overcome things that have happened in the past and figure out how to move forward together?

I adored both of these characters. Gus was swoonworthy and he was a man that was brought up right and knew how to treat a woman even if it didn't necessarily appear that way on the surface. Bo was a strong female character and even though she was fighting many demons from her past, it was fantastic to see her grow as the book progressed. Together these two were magical and this story illustrated that when you find your person, everything you thought you knew can be turned on it's head in an instant.

I'd highly recommend this latest Misadventures tale!

Hockey & Toni Aleo go hand in hand. Misadventures with a Rookie is an absolutely fantastic Read right from the very first page.
We meet Gus “the bus Persson a cocky as all hell up and coming Hockey player just waiting for his chance to play in the NHL. While he waits he plays hard not only on the ice but also off the ice. That is until he meets Bo St. James.
Bo St. James is a hard working student trying to get her degree, working and moving on with her life but when she catches the eye of Gus her life does a complete turn and she can’t help bring out all her Sass towards him.
The banter between the two of them will have you laughing out loud, maybe shed a few tears and even let out a sigh or two but the chemistry you feel coming off the pages will be amazing.
Sometimes you can’t help fall for secondary characters but when you meet Gus’s Mom Lauren you will understand why. She is the Mom everyone wants, the support she gives him, the love even and the banter she has with him will leave you with a smile.
What I really mean is when you see the words The End you will close the book with a smile on your face.

This book was a lot steamier than I typically prefer, but man did I love his character and I seriously had a great time with this one. I laughed out loud and found myself in fits of giggles during certain parts. I also loved that it didn't go exactly the way I thought i t would go and that the author added all that awkwardness to certain scenes ;) Plus, I have this thing for books about hockey players...who knows why. Still, this one was an overall hit.

I think this was the fastest I have ever read a book. When I say I couldn’t put it down usually that means I did put it down to eat dinner, let the dogs out, whatever. I had Misadventures with a Rookie in my hands from the time I picked it up until I finished. I even ate my lunch while reading. I need to know who Toni Aleo is. I need to read more..

I am flabbergasted, enthralled, amazed. Rookie is EVERYTHING. I am so impressed I am having trouble finding words to explain it. Bo and Gus are it. They are the epitome of the perfect couple in my opinion. There is fire, lust, romance, comedy, the list goes on. I literally had chills while I was reading. The plot twist was so relatable.

Nothing about this novel felt forced or awkward. It just flowed and was absolutely seamless. It made me want more. I can’t get enough.

Oh hello hockey romance..

Misadventures of a Rookie was a cute book. Unfortunately, not a lot happened for most of this book. Yeah, Gus and Bo bicker a lot and sometimes that works for me.. but it didn't this time around. I wanted more - especially since this is book #10 in this series. If it was #1 then I might've been more lenient.

Then it got a smidge better towards the end. It was obvious that these two had chemistry but it also kind of felt a little too late for me? I just feel like this had so much potential but ended up being a dud. Wanted more from this book/storyline and got nothing in return.

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. **

Toni Aleo’s books never cease to amaze me! Misadventures of a Rookie had me hooked from start to finish! Gus “The Bus Persson was drafted by the NHL’s Twin Cities Tornados, but first has to spend some time playing on their AHL team the Malibu Suns. This is where he meets the fiery ice girl, Bo St. James. Burned by a past relationship, Bo wants absolutely nothing to do with Gus. All she wants to do is finish school and start her career.

Gus is sweet and understanding, but he also is driven and goes after what he wants. Bo is sassy and has a “take no crap attitude but is also very gun shy about relationships. These two are drawn together for an incredible journey filled with some awkward, some cringe worthy, and some down right hilarious moments.

This is an amazing book that I highly recommend reading. Once you start, you won’t want to put it down until your finished!

What a great book... This was a funny read. I thought the chase would last all through the book, but of course I should’ve known Ms. Aleo would tease us with these “too hot for each other characters. Wow, to say I’m loving the name Bocephus for the heroine was too funny. Bo, for short, was one of the Ice Girls for the AHL Malibu Suns in California. She was working part-time and interning for the team to become a physical therapist. Bo could not stand Gus “the Bus Persson because she thought he was a cocky rookie hockey player that chased any girl available and then dumped her after he got what he wanted .

I was surprised they connected right away, but I think Bo thought this would be a “one and done....not. They were hot for each other once Bo got tired of missing sex and figured after they hit the sheets, she would never see him again. This was a really great read to me. I laughed just about all the way through the book. There was a lot of twists and turns but in the end I think they make a great couple. I sure hope there will be more books coming with the Suns and the Tornadoes as a series. I definitely want to read more about Bo and Gus lives.

So reading the title, to me was a little misleading. Frankly I think it should have been titled something else in the form of a hilarious name due to a certain hilarious scene in the book . PS. Unicorn Spit is allllll the rage! *wink*

Anyways, Two characters, Bo and Gus. They have a weird way to start a relationship, but really don't some of the best loves happen that way? Toni's ability to combine comedy and reality is rather impressive from a reader standpoint because you get so engrossed in the story-line and feel like you are part of these characters. You simply cannot assume about the characters, like they did to one another in the book, because reality does not like assumptions.

So don't be like me and assume the title will be an oddly weird story (Because honestly that is exactly my thought when i was told I would be reading this ARC of this story) It turned out to be a GREAT love story that starts off in the hate-love kind of way and the comedic relief were placed just right throughout the story that it came together so smoothly. but seriously, please enjoy the unicorn spit because I need to find this stuff right NOW!

thank you Toni Aleo, for giving your readers yet another story to latch onto and lose themselves in the well developed characters and plot line!

I received an ARC for an honest review.
1.
“He must be special. I quirked my lips a little.
“He’s a pain in my ass. When she laughed quietly, I looked up and she smiled.
“The best love is.

Well, we all know this is true. Bo and Gus have a relationship I would consider truly honest. I mean really if they didn’t love each other they wouldn’t argue. Right? Or something or other. They have fireworks for sure. Love isn’t always sweet and tender. (Bleh!) Sometimes, it’s being mad as hell or a visit to the E.R. Maybe a lot of emergency rooms.

2. If you can’t laugh during sex or at previous sex then you need new sex. I’ve always said this and this book says it again.

3. Toni always seem to write books that generate some type of feelings. This one is no different. I felt sad, a little annoyed, aww (if aww is a feeling, that’s what I felt), and happy. MAOAR was a fairly quick read. I think it’s a typical length for Aleo books actually. I just have a tendency to soak them up.

4. I’m actually only giving this book 4.899999 stars. Simply because I wanted and epilogue. I really really wanted an epilogue. Come on Aleo, tell me the future!

I love this book, the writing the story the characters it all came together perfectly.

I’ve read a lot of sports books and going in I thought I knew what I was going to read but I was so wrong and especially about Gus.
Gus is the ‘rookie in the story, he’s the next hotshot ice hockey player he’s successful on and off the ice then he meets Bo and everything changes.

I’m calling dibs on Gus and his parents their relationship is everything, the love and support they have for each other is beautiful to read. Then there’s Gus who is such a sweetheart, he’s focused on his goals but not arrogant.

From the first time we meet Bo you know she’s different from her peers and you know she has a secret. Full disclosure I figured it out but it did not detract from the joy of reading the book.

What I wasn’t expecting was to laugh so much the back and forth banter between Bo and Gus was hilarious. There is a particular scene which I shall ever refer to as the ‘Unicorn that had tears running down my face with laughter.

I loved the connection between Gus and Bo and all of the characters fit perfectly in their place in the story.

A well written beautiful story.

Honest review headed your way!!!

I have read damn near everything Toni has put out and Misadventures of a Rookie jumped to my top 5! I love the dynamic between Gus and Bo. Their witty banter had me rolling the whole time. The standard these two had for a typical date was enough to leave me in stitches! (pun intended)
Bo is a strong, determined, stubborn woman. (P.s you are going to love her full name! lol)
Gus is a cocky, arrogant, hilarious sweetheart that you can't help but love even when he is getting on your nerves. (which is probably why Bo couldn't resist him either)
I won't get into all the details of the book, that's not my style, but if you are looking for a fun read that gives you all the feels and a lot of laughs than this is the book for you. The characters are very relatable and the story line sucks you in and won't let you go.

PS I'm with the other reviewer though.... I wanted an epilogue! lol 4.999999 stars senorita Aleo!!!

I read this book in one evening because I couldn’t put this book down. This story is about a Hockey Rookie in the farm team who has eyes for the ice girl who has secrets and isn’t wanting to get involved with anyone. This book made me laugh, brought on the tears and the steamy hot sex made me fan myself. Again I love Toni Aleo and this book was everything I expected it to be.

Everything I hate in fics. Why the hell is it so hard for female authors to write decent female characters??? Anyway.... I'm going to give you the skinny recap and then put the spoilers below.

Bo (stupid twat) had her heart broken by a hockey player when she was a teen, plus some extra stuff. So now she hates all men and all hockey players. Since she teaches ice skating and is an ice girl for this hockey team, she meets Gus (whore.... oh, and a hockey player). They have some insta-chemistry. Gus is pretty proud of his reputation as a whore, in fact, he's f*cked all of the ice girls and pretty much every female he runs into. Gus totally wants to add Bo to his hockey stick, but she hates men and says no. Well........ chemistry happens and they start making out, he gives her an oral O and then he plunges inside and starts thrusting but wait... SHE'S SPRAINED HER FUCKING ANKLE. So, he's forced to pull out and take her to the ER. Yes, that's what everyone wants to read about. Anyway - we get a lot more stupid shit, they fall in love, yada yada, she breaks his heart, yada yada, HEA.

Bo is an annoying twat. I'm so over the "he broke my heart and now I hate all men and won't even go out on a date" trope. OVER IT. I get how she would be depressed at first, but it's been six freaking years. Time to grow up.

SEX: There are two times where he gives her the oral O and then one of them injures themselves and they have to quit. Like WTF. There are at least 3 trips to the ER. The sex scenes are all one pump chumps. OH...... AND A SEX SCENE DURING A DREAM SEQUENCE DOES NOT COUNT!!

SPOILER: Even if Bo wasn't such a bitch, this part would have definitely had me hating.

Even though Gus was a former whore, his lines and character were written really funny. There were a few parts that made me laugh, they all included him!!!!

The ONLY reason I started this book was because it was narrated by sexy voiced Jacob Morgan. If it hadn't been for him, I would have DNF'd when Gus was forced to pull out that first time during the sprained ankle. Seriously ...... WTF?!?!

Anyway - if you don't have a problem with that, go ahead and enjoy.

This was my first Toni Aleo book but it won't be my hockey romance loving heart's last! It took me a while to get in to it - Bo was just so aggressively anti Gus for no apparent reason and Gus was such an unapologetic manwhore that I just couldn't. But then there was a shift and I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN. They were both so much more than meets the eye and even though I was able to figure out the big secret (as usual but it wasn't really that surprising) it was such a unique reveal and the way it all played out was great. I also really loved the family dynamics between Gus and his parents and even Bo and her family. Plus Bo's real name is a hoot enough to read the book just to experience that. And I liked the secondary characters enough that I would love to see books about Gus' roomie and Bo's bestie. As it is, I'll definitely be looking to read Toni Aleo's Assassin's series ASAP! 4 out of 5 wine glasses.

First off let me say that I don't normally read sports romance. I do enjoy watching hockey but have never thought about reading sports anything. I'm so glad I read this book!!!! It was amazing! Toni Aleo weaves a fantastic story with two characters voices and point of views clearly represented that flow effortlessly throughout the book. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in a very long time. I laughed out loud and just felt so many emotions reading this book! Bo resonated with my soul and I found myself invested in her and her happiness. We all struggle with our past and she was relatable without being over dramatic. And Gus was just a mess, you want to hate him but you can't. Mrs.Aleo really hit it out of the park with these characters and even the side characters were very easy to connect to. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good story wether you love hockey or not. I will definitely be rereading this book many times over. The only thing I would add is I wish there was more, but isn't it always that way when you read a great book?
