The jackpot Cam hit in Vegas finally gave him the chance to party like a rock star. He never wanted to forget the weekend he barely remembers, so he got himself a permanent souvenir: his first tattoo. Now more tattoos are beginning to appear and Cam has no idea why.
Mornings in the SoCal apartment he shares with his best bud are all starting off the same way: Cam wakes up and discovers a new ink breakout somewhere on his body. Sometimes it’s undecipherable writing. Other times it’s a strange symbol. Every time it’s a blemish even his most expensive exfoliant can’t scrub away. All attempts at finding out who or what is vandalizing his once-immaculate appearance are coming up empty, and the ever-multiplying tattoos aren’t just destroying his looks; they’re destroying his whole life.
Forced to embrace his altered self, Cam starts over in the place he least expected. There his life begins to follow a familiar and comfortable pattern and gives him hope of a new normal. What Cam doesn’t realize is that his transformation is far from complete.
Buan Boonanca always had the craving to see the world outside of the bubble of the Orange County, CA ghetto where he was raised. Drawn to the spirituality of the Native peoples of America, he moved to Northern Arizona to live among the tribes which inhabit the area. Before long, the hedonistic sands of Las Vegas seduced him and lured him away from his peaceful life. The years of materialistic excess in Vegas left Buan broken and bankrupt. He found his way to a Buddhist sanctuary where he began his recovery. Temptation called again and drew him away from his new-found serenity. This time it was the call of adventure. He then spent the next decade on an extensive exploration of Europe and eventually fell in with a band of Taoists. Through much study and meditation, Buan discovered he only exists in the imagination of a contract manager for a small software company located somewhere in The Netherlands. He currently still resides in the mind of another and enjoys his fabricated life.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I think it has the qualities to become a modern classic. It starts as a comedy, but you will soon feel the melancholy of the main character, Cam, his detachment from his surroundings, even before he is forced to abandon his life and start his bizarre journey into the unknown. The book is deep, ironic and very entertaining, its characters stayed with me long after I finished reading it.
I love stories that are unpredictable. What started off as a fun and carefree time in Las Vegas suddenly took a dramatic turn that transformed one man's entire life, leading to his quest of self discovery. As the story unfolds, readers too are led on a path of self reflection as the author constructs his plot around ideas and thought patterns that brings the reader to question learned 'truths', beliefs and teachings... at least this is the path my mind was led on. Buan Boonaca's book really invites one's imagination to embark upon an open journey of bizarre events that will thrill and excite and will leave your mind to ponder on the reflective elements brought out in this story, long after reading.
This story begins with a couple of young guys looking for sex and materialism to fill any void they may have inside. Only, something goes horribly wrong! This pushes the main character to the brink of insanity, transforming him initially into something he previously loathed. As an older female reader, the story was a little wearing on me at first with the guys' rants about "chicks" and such, but picked up considerable interest with all the twists and turns it takes. Soon, I could not put it down, only breaking for a day when I had to be away.
Genius in its composition, the book has the ability to tease the reader while we discover the main character's continual transformations. There are mysteries layered well within the story. The author did a great job on dialogue and gave vivid descriptions of the characters, drawing you into their lives as well. The ending leaves room for a possible sequel and hope for Cam's future. I see many people of various backgrounds enjoying this book.
This book makes you think about stereotypes, self-discovery, life meaning and purpose. It is very different for fiction and humorous at times. During most of my reading, I felt a sense of mystery.
This book kept jumping between 2 and 3 stars, interesting idea, tattoos keep appearing on the main character, Cam's body, new one each morning it seems. The characters are dull, very shallow and nobody for the reader to like, this may have been intentional as the ending cleverly highlights their shallowness, unfortunately it makes reading the book a bit tough.
I liked the spiritual side of the story but huge chunks of the book could have been cut out to stop it feel like it was dragging, unnecessary day dreams took up many pages. I read this on the kindle so that might have added to why it too me so long to read, I find it much easier to get into a book I am psychically holding.
I feel bad giving this such a low score, but it has too many faults to be more generous.
Baun Boonaca's Accululation finds itself on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ lists such as Best Dark Humor, Best Quirky Dark Novels, and Best Books You've Never Heard Of. That alone had my attention and from page one, this novel was unparalleled in cleverness and provocative all around. In the beginning, Accumulation comes off as a comedy. Cam's character plays sophomoric nearing simpleton, standing on the precipice of growing up and leaning toward not doing so. It's right at the point when you accept that vibe and settle in that there's an almost infinitesimal shift in the tone of the story. Before you know it, you're knee deep in a much different comedy; something a little more morose. I wouldn't call it dark or sinister, it's more a realities of life kind of thing.
I don't want to give anything away so I hesitate to delve much into the plot beyond what the summary gives us. Accumulation is much more than simply the story of a young man who gets one tattoo and more and more mysteriously appear on his body. So much more.
If there's anything I would give to this book, it's the author's powerful way with words. With it, he fancifully expresses his thoughts, adding a great deal of humour to the mix.
The story follows Cam's life as it takes a drastic turn into the unexpected and almost unexplainable direction, all because of one measly tattoo. It doubled without warning and made Cam an object of scrutiny. This frustrating experience forces Cam to see life in a whole new perspective as he tries to make sense of his present predicament. He encounters positives and negatives along the line and finally makes a decision no one saw coming.
I recommend it to those who enjoy humour, suspense, poetic descriptions and any who suffered societal stigmatisation based on physical appearances.
Accumulation read like a movie in my head with cinematography by Sven Nykvist. I was in Las Vegas, walking down those brightly lit streets in the dry desert heat dodging porno flyers thrust at me. Each time Cam changed his location, I was with him, seeing what he saw, feeling what he felt. The deeper I got into the book, the more I started to wonder: was I reading science fiction or self-help? Cam starts off with a teenage ego and grows from there. At first, I couldn’t identify with him, but I was drawn in and found my inner Cam. Usually, I gobble up a book. I’m a fast reader and can’t wait to get to the end. This book was like a seven course meal in an expensive restaurant. I wanted to savor every bite. I stopped many times and closed my eyes, just to take in what I had just read. When I did reach the end, I couldn’t stop thinking about Cam and his journey. He stayed with me. Accumulation is a great first offering by this author. I can’t wait to read his next book!!
Accumulation in the story of how the main character, Cam, went off for a stay in Las Vegas with his best friend and, after winning a jackpot, gets his first tattoo to celebrate. Only this tattoo is the start of something Cam could never even dream of: soon, new tattoos start showing up on his body and he can’t do anything about it. He loses everything dear to him and has to accept his new fate.
Finally, a story that is new and imaginative! I’ve never read another one like it. Thank you Buan for an interesting journey with Cam.
(A little bit of warning: it can get kinda of graphic so if that’s not your thing, you might want to skip a few pages ahead.)
Although "Accumulation" has a protagonist, Cam, who initially seems to be the typical macho, the novel is incredibly entertaining and unpredictable. The fantasy plot point that the novel gives is genius, since from the first words of the book, this is presented as a realistic reading, however, the importance of the Cam tattoo and everything that develops from this is extremely great in addition to the excellent pace that the book has and that will make you read it in one sitting.
Accumulation is by far one of the most interesting books I have read lately! The book follows Cam as he and a friend visit Las Vegas and party it up for the weekend after he hits a jackpot at the casino. Cam ends up getting a tattoo to remember the weekend and heads home. Once Cam gets home he starts accumulating tattoos not in the normal way but they just start appearing all over his body. From little splotches to symbols and illegible words, Cam has no idea what is happening. It gets so bad that he loses his job and his whole life. It’s then that Cam sets out on a journey of self discovery. I was hooked from the minute I started reading this book, I really couldn’t put it down. By the end I didn’t know what was real or what was imagined but I did know that it was an amazing book! I’ll be looking for more from Buan Boonaca that’s for sure!
Buan Boonaca has created an awesomely funny, creative, and unique story with Accumulation, a Twilight Zone-esque spin on the trope of getting tattoos you regret, or can't remember getting.
Boonaca’s style is downright literary with his well formed characters and witty reflection of life. You’ll be realizing how comically apt and true many of his observations are as you read this thought provoking narrative of character exploration.
It's often hard to find good quality fiction on Amazon that also leaves the reader pondering some deep questions of import once the digital cover is closed. Accumulation is philosophical without losing its entertainment value...a difficult combination for authors to wrangle into book form, leaving me looking forward to more writing from Buan Boonaca.
Imagine this: you and your friend decide to go to Vegas. It is not just any Vegas. It is Las Vegas; a city where “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’ rules apply. Money is no problem, neither for you or your friend. After all, you came here to make the best out of it, to have fun and to squeeze as much as possible from that word. However, just as you thought that this brand new cool tattoo would look awesome on you, something starts happening. Something is starting to change. It is not just the tattoo. It is like everything is changing. The world you knew, people around you, your job Everything is changing. Or- is there something else going on? Maybe you are the only one who is changing? Before you knew it, your world gradually starts turning upside-down. This is how Accumulation, a novel written by Buan Boonaca could be explained, in the shortest possible way. The character that is going through the process of “accumulation’ and change is “named’ Cam. One night, one tattoo will change his life forever. What do these tattoos mean? Why did they start appearing all over his body? What I like most about this novel is how the author managed to create a mixture of horror, the thriller in some way and a criticism of the modern society. There are not many books of this combination of genre, which only adds more to the overall quality. Horror. Thriller. Modern society. Secret tattoos. The secret meaning behind them. I like It. 5/5.
Tattoos accumulating on a body can represent many things: demons conjuring a tormented soul, burden of memories or dreams that sticks permanently or the thing that most of us can relate to, i.e. a deviating personality either hypocritic to adapt in our society or savage to act as a rebellion against it, and in that one is never the same person one used to be.
This guy from Orange County has unquestionably got some minerals, as of how this book captures our modern culture. I really love books that are unpredictable and the ones that ask many questions but at the end answers all-together different answers that are bigger than the subject of the plot itself.
Cam, the protagonist wasn't the most interesting to me but certainly, his character transformation totally got me into. I loved how the book explores our nature of reality from the third person that seems straight-forward but still disturbing. Though, I think the character arc would be best developed if it was in the first person.
Thank you, Simone, for recommending this! I'm so glad that I've read this at this point in my life which makes this subject so relatable and utterly relevant. People say literature is dead and post-modernism has ended but I think these are the kind of books that keep me bringing to the literature of our times. I would love to read more from you, Buan.
"Under all that hair and ink, you're still just a boy." I loved the idea behind this story. It was so unique and different from any other book I have read. From the start of it, it just pulled me in. Cam is the type of protagonist we love to hate, with his toxic masculinity and crude behavior, without many redeeming qualities. I was really intrigued by the mystery, but honestly didn't care about Cam. He went from incredibly shallow to incredibly deep in a way that didn't suit his character to me. "I didn't do anything...This is who I am now." I was a bit shocked how easily Cam took on his new life and role without much of a fight. Instead of balking against it, he threw himself into his new identity. It was an interesting juxtaposition between running away from yourself, loss of control, change, and acceptance. The random dropping of movie and tv show names got really old fast. It took me out of the story and made me question whether or not the author had made a bar bet at some point to see just how many of them he could insert into the story. I kept thinking they would weave into the story in a deeper way. If you look at them allegorically, you could tie them in, but they didn't fell like they fit to me. This story was great for me, until the second half where it goes from the mystery of the tattoos to a spirit journey. I loved many of the metaphors and ideas behind the tattoos and the skin-deep, visual surface of the world and our past experiences. The spiritual journey blasted this story to a metaphysical level I was not anticipating and that didn't feel like it jived with the rest of the book in some ways. Overall, I liked it though.
Wow this novel was truly amazing! This is so well-written and thought out. This story is told by Buan Boonaca. Who has a wonderful way with words that make the story flow so wonderfully. This book is a bit of a horror story focused on Cam and his one night in Vegas. Cam goes out with his friend in Vegas and is having fun. Cam hits the jackpot on a machine that is somewhat hidden in the corner away from almost everyone. He takes his winnings and hits the town with his best friend and a couple of ladies. Only problem they are more attracted to the money than to him. But then he decides he needs a memento To remember the night, so he decides he is getting a tattoo. But when he goes home he thinks all is back to normal. But Cam notices something wierd is going on. The tattoo he got in Vegas is not alone anymore. There are new tattoos showing up. Some of them are words scribbled in strange writing, others are symbols that Cam does not understand. There is only one huge problem, as the days go by they are covering his entire body. Unfortunitly he loses his job and starts to become alienated from the people that he cares the most about. Forced out of his life, Cam decides to start over somewhere else. Somewhere that will accept his new appearance. The problem is that the tattoos were just the beginning. Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too
I am writing this after just finished reading this, and I have a lot going on in my head...
First and foremost, I do not understand why there had to be really bad analogies. I thought we were past the time of calling someone "fat" in a really mean way or saying someone is "obviously homosexual" (see page 40). It really bothered me because I'm not the type of person who would say that. It's mean. I don't dig it. Of course, people could say, "Oh, it was just once. Simple. Let it go." As we live in a world where people are still getting killed for being their truest self, nope nope nope, won't take any meanness like that. Okay, rant over.
Let's get to the story. I thought it was pretty interesting. We see Cam losing himself and beginning to find himself. We see him literally lose it, which was a good story to see. We see him want the materialistic things that we think we want in life, and you can see the subtle hints that it isn't satisfactory for him at all. He always wants more or believes he's okay and to repeat every single day. We see him grow from that viewpoint into realizing there's more to life than just that. People judge you by looks, and Cam has begun to outgrow that mentality. It's ironic we see it at the end, and it's done at him. I wish we learned more about his past though. What was that scene about where the government had him and his family? Who was his parents and grandfather? What's the deal with the grandmother hurting him after the injury to her grandson? Everything tied together, but still left questions unanswered. It was a good story.
Man, I'm two for two on books with great premises that turned out to be completely pointless ramblings.
Cam and his best friend T go to Vegas. They win some money, get drunk and Cam decides to get a tattoo. Then they go home. The next day, Cam wakes up with a new tattoo that he doesn't remember getting. And the next day and the next. He has other moments of blackouts as well but he can't figure out what's happening to him.
Soon he is covered in tattoos and his entire life has changed. People look at him differently. People judge him. I'd like to say this book is about judging books by covers, but honestly I'm not sure what this book was about in the end. I found myself thinking more about the author than the story b/c he clearly doesn't like women. Both girlfriends are needy, selfish, jealous and pretty nuts (the first one is actually named Crazee). In the end, I'd skip this one even though it has 4.2 stars on Amazon.
This was an interesting and easy read....it kept me turning the page to uncover the answers to the many events happening to the main character. The premise was good and the writing was well done. There were a few situations that arose that made me flip back a few pages to see if I missed something, because strange happenings seemed to come out of nowhere. My only real complaint is the answers I sought never surfaced and I was left, literally, scratching my head as I let my imagination take over, which I now believe is the story's purpose.
The concept is great, the writing was well done, and the curiosity factor is off the charts. I recommend this book, especially if you're looking for something different to read and enjoy flexing your imagination muscles.
A surprise and delight! This book took me completely by surprise. I had b=never heard of the author and the description seemed intriguing so I decided to give it a whirl. I'm glad I did. Cam is the main character and he is a less than desirable man looking for women, money, and "stuff" to fill the void in his life and claim some sort of status in keeping up with the Jonses. A tattoo to commemorate a wild trip to Vegas takes a wrong turn - and the reader is thrust into more a plot full of unexpected twists and turns. The descriptions and writing are nicely done- I felt like I was there with Cam as he took his wild ride along the path of self-discovery. If you like unpredictability and a some fantasy elements rolled into the plot, this book will not disappoint.
Accumulation by Buan Boonaca takes you through the life of Cam who after winning the jackpot in Vegas decides to get his first tattoo. After he wakes up each day after receiving his first tattoo, he ends up with another, and he cannot figure out why. Buan Boonaca caught my attention on page one and kept me quickly turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I found that the pace set in Accumulation was easy to follow and I quite enjoyed the way the book played out. When I come across a good book, I strive to make sure that I pass on the joy of reading to anyone who is interested. This genre has piqued my interest and has reinvigorated my love for reading. If you are interested in this genre at all, I would definitely give this book a read. You will not regret it.
This is a really interesting story. I had never quite heard of anything like it before. Cam, the main character, gets a tattoo. Slowly, his body is taken over with tattoos. They just keep appearing. It's sort of horror esque but not quite, but it does have a spooky vibe to it. I mean if I woke up with more and more tattoos every day, I'd be freaked out. The idea is so unique it's worth a read just for that. I dropped a star because I feel like it didn't fully 100% come together. I still had questions at the end, and it could have been a bit better hashed out. But it's still a 4 star book, and by far the most unique idea I have seen in a long time, which is of value in and of itself in 2018 where there are no new ideas.
Weird genre combo - This story is about an extremely vain guy who is forced to change every exterior thing he loves about himself, and learn what it's like to be on the other end of the popularity scale. He goes from making fun of others to being one of those who is shunned, stared at and ridiculed.
It was an interesting journey that was both a comment on current society and a spiritual revelation.
This book isn't horror in a sense of scary things coming after you. It's more a personal horror, where the character is suddenly unable to control how he looks from day to day and also can't explain why he's suddenly covered in tattoo ink.
This was a fast read and an interesting look at modern society.
I have to say if you are into the sci-fi/fantasy then I'm sure you are going to love this book. This is not normally my genre to read but I couldn't put it down. I HAD to find out just exactly what was going on with this kid! Would I recommend you buy it, yes of course!! Thank you Buan!
Yet another example of a five star book with a three star ending. I see more of these all the time (Landscape with Invisible Hand, The Tree Museum, Ovenman, Glimpses). This book lost its way. This author lost his way. This character certainly lost his way.
I gave this book 4 stars because it was very well written but honestly for me it was very very confusing. But this is definitely out of my normal reading so please give it a try yourself and see what you think.
If you were able to live the life of leisure without financial worries, how would you spend your days and evenings? Read “Accumulation by Buan Boonanca to find out how one young man lives.
After winning a substantial amount of money, Cam feels he’s got it made and enjoys life to the max. After his first tattoo, he wakes up every day with another one, which he doesn’t remember getting done.
During the course of his new life, Cam learns more about his childhood and how his parents made a decision that impacts him to this day.
I found the story line unpredictable, so it keeps one guessing as to the next phrase of Cam’s journey.
It’s definitely a good read and has been featured on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ lists such as Best Dark Humor and Best Quirky Dark Novels.
I strongly recommend this book from mysterious author Buan Boonaca. The story starts off seemingly innocent with a crazy night in Las Vegas, but this night out with a friend is the beginning of the main character’s thrilling metamorphosis. A mysterious power starts to take control of Cam’s body and behavior. This book is nothing like you expect. It’s a story that will give you a shiver, but then will warm you up with a big dose of dark humor. My favorite character is the unforgettable Ras, who will make you smile even in the most difficult moments.
