The Super Summer flu is devastating the United States. Meanwhile, Scarlett Lewis, an ordinary grade school teacher, mopes around her condo, recovering from a painful break-up. She finally gathers the courage to reconnect with society—oblivious to the pandemic.
Until . . . she begins noticing the bizarre events unraveling around her.
During Scarlett’s desperate search to find her sister and the rest of civilization, she meets other survivors who may not have her best interests at heart. With hope as her last weapon of defense, Scarlett must learn to survive the creeper-infested world without sacrificing her own humanity as she discovers the dark fate of the Human Race.
A.D. Popovich was born and raised in Louisiana. At the age of fifteen, she moved to California with her family. Living in California was a huge eye-opener for her. California meant freedom. "Well, back in the 70s it did."
After meeting her husband, life has been one adventure after another. They lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico for a while—absolutely wonderful. Several years later they made a wrong turn and ended up in Florida: too many tornados and alligators. They returned to California and set-up their own business, The Cosmic Shirt Company, for about two years until the Bankstas caused The Crash. Homeless for a while, “Yes, really. They finally managed to get their feet back on the ground after obtaining super-boring jobs.
After several years of working in the mundane world, A.D. Popovich decided it was time for a change. She focused almost every second of her free-time focusing and visualizing her childhood dream—writing. She is busy working on the second book in The Dead Series “Only the Dead Don’t Lie. She strives to write compelling, scary, survival stories with a touch of the metaphysical about the average guy and gal, (not a hitman, superhero, military expert, reporter or socialite).
When asked what people find surprising about her, she replied, “Hmm, the people who know me from my working-world life were super-surprised when I told them I had published a dystopian novel. They were like . . . ‘Whut? They were just getting used to my metaphysical side. Now they really think I’m weird. It seems odd to me as well that I like to venture to the dark side in my stories. Also, I’m super-girly; most people are surprised that I was in the Army Reserves. In fact, some people actually don’t believe me when I mention I had served in the military.
Pretty book, reminds me of Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, a little bit of Resident Evil, and 28 Days After.
This is cool. This is a nice book for those who like things above. Strong female character Scarlett, an old man Dean and badheads boys are included. As usual for me I have only one question: on which side would I be? Could I survive in such a world?
I like who author describes characters, their decisions, and their relationships.
But more I like developing of zombies. You know, they aren't just stupid fresh-meat-eaters, and this is cool. I'd like to know what we will see in the next book.
Scarlett quickly finds herself on the run, trying desperately to reach her sister and her family in Pinole. Dodging zombies and abandoned vehicles blocking the roads, Scarlett finds shelter where she can, when she can.
After scavenging the neighborhood for supplies, Scarlett is ready to make tracks for her sister's; fate intervenes and her plans are completely overturned....
Wow, what a ride! Loved, loved, LOVED this book! Action, adventure, fast paced and thought provoking! Scarlett and others face seemingly insurmountable odds to survive.... and possibly..... thrive?
I really got into this book after a brief slow start. Other than some editing issues with grammar, punctuation and wording, it was a great book. She knows how to tell a good story and her characters have great depth, you really get to know them! I'm definitely going to buy the next book!! Do yourself a favor and read it, then do the Indie author a favor and leave even a short review. That is the only way these Indie authors get the word out about their books, so good or bad please read and review!,
This is basically a beginning apocalyptic book. It starts at the beginning of the issue and goes from there, you dont jump into a world thats dead or dying, you watch it happen. At least you do once Scarlett realizes what is happening. Im not normally into books like this but this one is well written and enjoyable.
Only the Dead Don't Die - a review by Rosemary Kenny
When a corrupt pharmaceutical company invents a zombie-virus and infects the West Coast of the US, (hoping to cash in by selling the only antidote), innocent lives are lost and civilization begins to crumble almost instantly in this apocalyptic thriller by the excellent A D Popovich.
The military round up infected people into 'rescue centres' after the number of antidote vaccines available for the so-called 'Summer Flu' run out faster than people are 'turning' and encourage all residents to make their way to the schools, sports stadiums etc where they'll supposedly be safe.
Who is Scarlett and why did she remain ignorant of the apocalyptic events happening around her? What does she witness after visiting an elderly neighbor? Who is Dean? How does he rescue Jimmy? When do they meet Lulu and Ella and where do they all stay? What are Paxton and Nate's motives? How does Jimmy reach out to other uninfected survivors ? Why do Dean and Luther leave?
This nail-biting dramatic apocalyptic what if...? story will make the fantasy thriller fan and other readers alike feel drawn to the well-rounded engaging characters and wonder if there could be more than a grain of truth in how we'd all behave if such a dreadful reality came to pass. Be sure to read it - after you've locked your doors and windows - then sleep with an eye open just in case!
How do you survive in a world gone mad? That is the journey we are taken on in Only the Dead Don't Die by fantastic new novelist A.D. Popovich. A post-apocalypse zombie story with great character development and a new twist on the genre. A definite must read!!
This is the first book I have read by this author . I was really impressed with the story and the authors writing style After a bit of a slow start , it really turned into a great zombie story . We have our heroes . Scarlett and Dean and the band of people they are protecting . Justin, Lulu Ella . Then we have the evil characters who want to be the leaders and are basically just insane aka as Paxton and Nate . I must admit at the beginning of the story Scarlett kind of annoyed me , she seemed so naïve and so worried about herself and not really getting what is going on . But as the story goes on she turns into a butt kicking, zombie fighting machine . She finds her place in the group with Dean and the gang and she thrives . I really liked her character towards the end . Dean is a great guy . he is a no nonsense guy that wants to live and survive . He is a caretaker and a boss to the rest of the crew . Put Dean and Scarlett together and they are a great team . The author did a great job portraying the zombie apocalypse in her own way. The zombies are a mixture of the slow and fast zombies that are out and popular right now . Her characters are well developed . They are strong but have their faults and the author uses their faults to make them better characters . Even with the slow start and you wanting to shake Scarlett and scream at her to get her head in the game at the beginning. It takes off and you will be on the edge of your seat most of the way through the book . You will laugh , cry and get angry while reading this book . I read this book in an evening . So if you like zombies check it out, you will not be disappointed
Only the dead don’t die By A.D. Popovitch 4 12 2017
You would never think that this was A.D. Popovich’s first zombie / post apac book. After a short slow start it ended up being a great, intriguing attention grabbing story. The characters were well developed and the struggles were relatable. A few of my fave characters besides Scarlett Lewis was Dean, Luther,Twila & Zac the mystery man Scarlett Lewis was a jaded teacher who’s betrothed had dumped her before they got to the alter. An unlikely survivor as she lived a life of comfort and was sheltered from the uglier Side of society. She was afraid of everything, how could she possible fend for herself in a world of Creepers and Ravers?. This is an action packed story full of suspense and peril.
When Scarlett Lewis's fiancee leaves her, she is so absorbed in her own woes, and under the influence of pain killers from her teeth extraction, that she fails to realise there is a pandemic happening in the US. The flu is the worse the world has seen and everyone who catches it dies, but they don't stay dead!! When Scarlett finally realises what is happening, she goes in search of her family and any survivours she can find.
This was such an awesome read, an what made it awesome was the characters. This author created some pretty memorable ones and ones that are easily likable. They were well written and developed and I pretty much liked them all, except for the brothers, they were just bad!!!
The plot was fairly fast paced and entertaining. I liked that Scarlett didn't have a clue what was going on at first and enjoyed seeing her grow throughout. I liked the Zombies too and how they came about, and how they were throughout. I was impressed that this is this authors first book, as it was well written and developed. If this is what she can do, then I look forward to more!
In all, an enjoyable Zombie book, filled with memorable characters and one that will leave you wanting more. Can't wait to see what else this author can do.
Great characters and a fairly good story line. I read a lot of survivalist stories and many are lacking in real character development or the story takes a turn that does not make sense. I'm wanting more from this author !
WOW! What an exciting story with lots of suspense. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up late reading it and was a zombie at work the next day. I really recommend this book!
I have only recently come to the zombie/horror genre and I have been really surprised by how much I enjoy it. This book was no exception. I really got into it. The characters were all great and I like the way their stories are all linked but as the story evolves they each end up going their sperate ways. What I didn't like and stopped me giving it 5 stars was the ending. It ends abruptly with no conclusion leaving you desperate to know if they all do survive long term.
As this is the first book in a series of 3, I guess the ending is deliberate and designed to get you to purchase the next book. I like book series and I like to be able to follow characters but I think each book should have an ending where you can be satisfied to leave it and move on. The nding of this book felt like it was only halfway through the story.

This is more of a saga series. It starts with the apocalypse even though main protagonist Scarlett is on pain killers and doesn't realise it. That's one of my critiques: It sounds unbelievable that you're so out of it for days. Anyway, she somehow survives and joins a small group. Dean is our other main protagonist. But the book sometimes switches POV to tell us more about the plot from other person's point. This is something I don't like too much but it's ok here. The book spans a longer period of time becoming less zombie threat and more humanity-down-shit. By the end of the book the zombies are evolving and there is also a kind of supernatural element that reminds of The Stand. This seems to intensify in the next book. Book 1 gives a lot of closure but lots is open for book 2 too. I liked the writing and characters of this book. Scarlett is a strong woman although I wasn't convinced from the beginning. Dean's ignorance and Ella's denial sometimes got on my nerves and from time to time I wished for Justin to just move on. I kind of like the direction it takes in the end with supernatural visions and a kind of fantasy twist, so I probably carry on reading.
ONLY THE DEAD DON'T DIE by A.D. Popovich was an okay read but portions of the story were bogged down with inconsistencies evident throughout. The highly-contagious summer flu was quick acting and people seemed to just die in place leaving cars haphazardly everywhere as if attacked by an EMP. I did like the prepper's multiple-level tree house, but couldn't envision that it sat hidden all along from roving eyes.
This first book in the series begins with the outbreak and how six characters eventually came together and lived in a portion of a hotel. Two of the six are crazy maniacs that the rest avoid. However, when the leader of the pack leaves on a special mission, the others escape for their lives when the hotel catches fire. The crazy dudes are to blame and plan to enslave the women. They escape and evade both the maniacs and zombies for a portion of the book.
Not sure of the premise of this story as there is no goal established for the characters other than day-to-day scrounging and battling zombies. The abrupt ending doesn't help either.
I did make it through this story but will not follow up on the main characters by purchasing book #2.
This was a really good and different apocalypse story. It seems to have went from thriller to fantasy. The beginning was almost funny. Who sleeps through an apocalypse? I thought Scarlett was so silly in the beginning and lucky to be surviving. Luckily for her, she learned to adapt. I was glad when she met Dean and the others because no-one needs to be alone in the end. Everybody was good except the Stockton boys but there's always those bad guys in an apocalypse. I like the way the author has the zombies evolving and how it all started. Now the story is getting strange with the new characters, dreams and a silver lady? I can't wait to see where this goes and I just know she'll be meeting up with her original group. I hope. I also need to know what's up with Twyla because she's a little strange. So far I like this story.
I really enjoyed this book, the ending is a bit awkward for me. So I don't know how I feel about that. I do look forward to reading the rest of the series though. Definitely a TWD vibes.
I was not fond of Justin's way of talking. The whole Ye-Ha makes me think of Yee Haw. Or the way Ella said Cuh ray zee. Justin gave off ADHD vibes instead of a nerdy vibes. He's very eccentric for sure.
Scarlett! This author did great with her having some personal growth. I did not see her evolving that way.
Dean, oh my sweet Mary, Dean Worner. He has such a good heart and the author did excellent portraying a man at his age.
I do wish the timeline was a bit better, I kept getting thrown off that way but nonetheless I enjoyed it.

I really liked this book. It starts off by describing how easy it is to miss a major event, if you've decided not to engage with the news, been busy with a project, had an op or just been ill. Scarlet & Dean have survived the initial outbreak by sheer luck & so we learn how they continue to survive in a new world that is an extremely dangerous place. Will humans band together for survival & help each other, or will it be a free for all? A well thought out story & I'll definitely be buying the next book
I like the originality, the zombies in this book can learn and evolve, which makes life a bit more tense than other apocalypse books. The author does a good job fleshing out the main characters, but also makes them a bit unbelievable in places. I couldn’t see Scarlett, a sort of whimpy school teacher become a strong survivor, I feel in reality, she would have been a creeper in the first few hours probably like me. Reviewed by Cyrene
It's was really good! I know Scarlett was main character but we got to follow others during their journey of horrors with zombies. I usually hate gaps in time like weeks or months but the author did awesome job filling that up with detailing what they did or what they are planning.
The plague was only just the beginning and not the end. A vaccine is made but it is already too late. A super summer fly is going to bring the world to its knees. What will happen to those who survive? How will they cope? See how and if they do
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a really interesting end of the world book. I really liked the pace sometimes i got frustrated with how dumb the people were but you get that with end of the world books lol. It was a great pace and a great story that kept me interested the whole time. Really decent read.
Some of it was silly and a bit over wrought but it was a fine effort. If the author tones down the slang and too obvious plot lines it has the makings of a very good series.
This book started out very interesting. We had two interesting characters we were seeing the post apocalyptic world with. Then as soon as they met up, everything went sideways. It felt like the plot was completely lost. I just finished because I had gotten so far in. The ending makes zero sense.
This book kept you on your toes. Certainly difficult to put down. Had zombies, some romance, some baddies, hell it's got everything. This author can write!!
