Arabella’s father put the family heirloom necklace on the card table, and lost it to the Duke of Elenford. So, he orders his marriage-age daughter to get it back by whatever means necessary, since the Duke is supposed to be a rake. Meanwhile the Duke of Elenford has been getting threatening letters by someone he apparently wronged, so the Duke of Elenford is sent away to Scotland, and his brother Andrew investigates and tries to make amends for all the wrong the Duke has done in hopes that one of the people he smooths over is the author of the threatening letters. Being the second born son, he has been overlooked all of his life, and decides to take up an invitation to a masked party and walk an evening in his brother’s shoes as the Duke. Arabella’s father takes her to the party and pushes her to entice the rakish Duke, and even though his brother Andrew is not a rake, he is drawn to Arabella and continues to woo her under the title of the Duke.
Unmasking the Duke is a sweet (not clean though) romance between two shy people. I liked both Andrew and Arabella even though they were a bit generic for their character types without anything all that special about them. He’s the typical overlooked handsome gentleman lord who typically is enchanted by the heroine at first sight. And the heroine is the typical beautiful shy wallflower who has to pluck up her courage. I liked the intrigue and suspense of what would happen when their lies come to light. And it irked me when Arabella stormed out when it came to light that he wasn’t the Duke. She didn’t storm out because of the lie about his station but because he lied about who he was. Still, that seemed a minor thing than her engaging in a relationship mainly to retrieve the family heirloom, without exchanging it for the money that it represents. It’s as good as stealing. And yet that didn’t seem to bother Andrew in the slightest, considering that her heart wasn’t in the relationship at the beginning, just nefarious purposes. I will say there was one scene in the garden (that went beyond just a kiss) that felt like it was added in later. Like someone told the author after the story had been written that the historical romance readers need more than just a kiss. So, it feels a bit out of step with the rest of the story which was entirely innocent (except for at the end). And it’s not even referenced later, just the kiss part, which felt tame to the rest of that scene. And the whole plot thread that the real Duke was sent away because he was being threatened felt largely forgotten through the story with only a mention or two about trying to smooth things over felt almost like an afterthought rather than the crux of the plot. The version I obtained ended at the 60% mark with the rest being a sample of another story.
This was a short novella that was really a great story. Imagine two people hiding who they really are from each other for different reasons. Lord Andrew Stephens, brother of a Duke and Arabella Marley, daughter of an Earl meet at a masked ball and are introduced to each other, but each has a secret. Arabella is being forced by her father to retrieve a necklace he lost in a gambling wager to the Duke. The attraction Andrew and Arabella have for each other complicates matters for her. Read this delightful tale and you will turn the last page with a smile. Will be following this new author!!

A CAPTIVATING READ!!! A well written, easy to follow tale with twists and turns that will keep you captivated from the first page until the very last word. A full range of emotions from betrayal, loss, greed, lies and deceit will keep your attention and frozen to the edge of your seat. Ellie did an amazing job bringing the characters and detailed scenes to life. I would recommend this read to anyone who loves a fantastic regency romance.
Such a sweet Regency romance. When Arabella's father gives her an ultimanun, and neither choice is a good one, she has to comply to save herself. Thankfully, a switch of identities makes her task easier. Sounds intriguing? It truly is! This is a delightful book that has interesting characters and a unique plot. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from Ms. St. Clair. I received an ARC of this book. The choice to read and review it was mine.
A series of threatening notes are sent to the Duke of Elenford’s home. The menacing messages warn that the anonymous author will seek retribution. The Duke’s brother, Andrew, fears for his brother life and encourages the Duke to go into hiding. After preparations are made to secure the Duke’s safety, Andrew takes on his brother’s responsibilities. When Andrew takes on his new role, he decides to find out what it is like to walk in his brother’s shoes. During the charade, Andrew is captivated by a woman a lovely lady, named Arabella, who has a menacing secret of her own.
The major themes in Unmasking a Duke address the issues of reputation, abuse of power, and vengeance. St. Clair does an excellent job of getting readers to identify with the characters circumstances by using the themes to invoke readers empathy.
Arabella’s reputation hangs in the balance during most of the story. Her character qualities come across as she faces the hardship of her situation. The mission she is forced to take on causes her great anxiety. She is intimidated into taking on a certain task. This fact causes one to feel great concern for Arabella's welfare.
What Andrew has to deal with during his brother’s absence will cause a reader to have great empathy for him as well. It is easy to identify with him as he contemplates his brother’s situation and worries about the misunderstanding he creates when he meets Arabella.
Although the main characters face challenging circumstances lessons are learned about responsibility, courage, and honesty. There are also lessons about truth and love. What is learned causes the main characters to go through major changes. Andrew changes his views about love and Arabella’s demeanor changes when she decides to take certain actions.
Some readers may not be convinced that Andrew can avoid certain problems while he takes on his brother’s responsibilities. The way in which the author presents Andrew’s secret may cause some readers to doubt that he could actually keep it. A more creative way of getting Andrew to hide his secret would make Andrew’s situation more compelling and perilous.
This book has a few intimate scenes. The scenes have been crafted to invoke heartwarming feelings as Andre and Arabella gradually get to know each other. Fortunately, very intimate interactions, between the main characters, allow a reader’s imagination to take over.
Romance enthusiasts will definitely enjoy the course and conclusion of this story. This is a short tale that can easily be read in one sitting. Die-hard romance fans will probably read it a number of times due to the main characters thoughtful and caring personalities.
I give Unmasking a Duke 4 out of 5 stars.
I was given a free copy of the eBook in exchange for an honest review.
I found myself unable to put this compelling read down. I had it read in four hours. Ms Ellie took me on a wonderful, exciting adventure. This was a compelling and marvellous twist that had me rooting for refunded characters. So let me introduce you to them.
Elias Stephens, Duke of Elenford, minor character but needs to be known. He is selfish, self-centered, and as always arrogant. He is being threatened by an unknown peer, so his brother convinces him to get out of town while it get straightened out.
Andrew Stephens, the brother, takes over investigating who is behind the threats. While also smoothing the ruffled feathers of other "Ton" members that Elias has wronged.
Stanley Marley, Baron Lancastershire, father to Arabella, is mean, abusive, and also arrogant. He likes to gamble and get drunk. When he loses he takes it out on his daughter and staff.
Arabella Marley is kind, gentle, and loves animals. She is being forced to retrieve a necklace her father lost in a card game. Not wanting to do this she reluctantly agrees to avoid a marriage to another abusive man.
Arabella never had a season because of her mother's death and her father's lackluster caring. So with being an unknown to society she boldly walks up to THE DUKE and greats him to start the charade to retrieve the necklace. Liking her boldness, Andrew, who is pretending for one night, just wants to enjoy her company. He finds himself intrigued with her. Since he has no knowledge of what has happened, Andrew, wants to get to know the bright, why woman. Arabella finds that the Duke is very much a contrast to what society rumors claim.
As they get to know one another, each wants to tell the truth but are afraid. Now knowing the other needs to learn the truth both find they have to keep the charade going or lose the other. OR do they? To give you more would spoil the fascinating story. I will just say, HAPPY READING!
Apparently, the threat to the Duke of Elenford's life is coming from Arabella's father owing to the fact that the Earl lost the Marley (mislabeled as Marling in Chapter 2) Necklace in a card game to the Duke and he wants it back claiming (to his daughter) that the Duke cheated him and threatening bodily harm to Arabella if she does not do what she was bid in recovering the necklace. It was mentioned in Chapter 2 that Arabella had a season or her coming out debut and with the Marley Necklace as a dowry then she would have at least attracted some suitors. Her debut would have included her court presentation given that she is an Earl's daughter and she would have been introduced to the ton by a tonnish female relative at a ball in her honor and not by her father as the author implied. Her father's role would be to pay for all the necessary accoutrements and other expenses. In reality and following the above mentioned context, Arabella was never "out" (as stated by the author since her concept of the word "out" clearly conflicts with the reader's). Her situation as an on the shelf spinster was not clear at this point. (It seems that the author needs to research Regency terminology, practices and norms.) Also, there is an obvious lapse in editing, specially on the last two chapters like "made" instead of "maid" and "some" instead of "him" referring to the Duke as a reformed rake on account of his marriage or maybe to the phrase "somewhat softened him." In the end, the threat to the Duke came from another quarter and of a more intimate and closer encounter than the width of a card table. P.S. ~ The concept was a good one; developing it with accurate research on the genre would make this a good debut novel plus Ms. St. Clair is quite good at the suspense and misdirect. I would still encourage her to keep on writing in order to hone her craft.
This book will grab you and not let go until the last page. The Duke is a scoundrel, a despoiler of innocents, probably a card cheat; Andrew, his brother is honorable and caring. Of course, Andrew undertakes to protect his brother and investigate the numerous threatening notes the Duke has been receiving. Arabella, daughter of the Earl of Marley, has been charged by her abusive father to retrieve an heirloom necklace he lost to the Duke in a card game. When Arabella and Andrew meet at a masquerade ball, neither are honest about themselves. The deception is perpetuated by each waiting for the right moment for disclosure.
The progression of the story was steady, not often predictable. Arabella was an obedient daughter until she refused to be threatened further. Andrew continued to fulfill his quest on his brother's behalf. And in the end I was surprised by the resolution of the mystery of the notes.
This is not a long read, but will hold your attention for an afternoon. I wish it could have been longer, but it was complete as written. I just didn't want to leave the couple. I received an ARC from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.
Andrew Stephens is brother to the Duke Of Elenford . The Duke is a rake , and a dissolute, he drinks , cheats at cards , and is not what most people would describe as a typical peer of the realm . After the duke receives some threatening notes , Andrew sends him away ,and by chance takes his identity to solve the problem of the threats . Arabella has had a tough life so far , devoid of love and affection, beaten and insulted by her father who keeps threatening to marry her to relatives or friends of dubious morals. She meets who she thinks is the Duke at a masquerade ball , both of them struck by the other and a relationship starts to develop. But she is after something from him , a necklace, that was lost To The Duke in a card game with her father . Andrew needs to tell her the truth of his identity but will she want him without a title. A wonderful novella , with a story that keeps you riveted ,moves quickly, and is written very well with some great characters.
I received a copy of this book and chose to submit a review
Well, the Duke is not really ‘the Duke but his brother, Andrew. The real Duke was incognito to Scotland since he stirred up so much scandal in London. But the fake duke fell in love with a baroness named Arabella, but couldn’t reveal himself due to him being the not real Duke. Iiieee! In any case, all this fuss was due to the baron, Arabella’s father, gambling away a family heirloom, therefore he was forcing her to ‘get to know the Duke thinking Andrew was the real Duke with the sordid reputation. Anyhooo, the great HEA at the end seems to find everything straightened out for the fake Duke, the real Duke and the daughter of the Baron (the Baron, ahaha, being the one to mistreat his daughter, Arabella) did not get his HEA yay! You must read this for yourself because you may be totally confused by my review. However, I’m not confused because I read the thing.
(P.S., if you want to read only the clean version then I would suggest to stop reading before the last section, otherwise you will get the explicit wedding night romp in full color.)
This is a sweet little story. It is not very complicated. The hero is the Duke's brother, Andrew. Andrew is younger than the Duke but, has a better understanding of his brother's behavior and its consequences. Andrew is trying to right some of the wrongs the Duke has committed. The heroine, Arabella, is a victim of her father and his greed. Andrew's knows that something is very wrong in Arabella's life. He is just not certain what it is.This story is about finding out what it is and making it right. This is a stand alone story. There is a sexually explicit scene. If this is offensive to you, don't read this book or if you under the age of 18. It is not erotic, however. It is an engaging story and worth reading.
A classic regency novella in the style of many other favourites of mine. I love a good Regency romance, one of my biggest problems with it was that it was too short. I could have definitely carried on reading for a few more chapters. A tale of deception and miscommunication where the couple have to come clean about who they really are before they finally end up together. Throw in a rogue brother, a nasty father and the pair questioning their own feelings and this is a recipe for easy reading on a quiet afternoon.
I received this book for free and enjoyed it very much, although the regency romance has been done hundreds of times it never stops me reading them.
Stanley Marley lost an heirloom necklace to the Duke to Elenford in a card game and tells his daughter Arabella she has to get it back. He doesn’t care if the duke seduces her and ruins her reputation. He blames her although it’s no one’s fault except his. At a masquerade ball, Marley points out the duke. It is not the duke but his brother Andrew Stephens who is pretending to be the duke to find out how it feels. Arabella comes to him and they dance. He calls on her several times but never tells her the truth. She has not told him the truth either.
A short and entertaining story. Lord Andrew is trying to right his brother's wrongs, unaware one may or may not be the acceptance of an heirloom wagered by Lady Arabella's father. In such a short story deep character development cannot be expected, but Andrew and Arabella are painted as decent individuals saddled with less pleasant relations. I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily chose to post my review.
This is a greatbookI recieved this GREAT book free for an honest review. It is a story of a young lady that lost her mother at an early age and her father likes to gamble and has lost the family heirloom necklace to a Duke. HE sends his daughter out to steal it back under pretext that she is courting the Duke. The Duke is being threatened for something he has done. HE is a Rogue so he is sent to Scotland to hide while his brother pretends to be the Duke to try to figure out who is after him.
The author right away pulls me into the world of Arabella and the Duke, or should I say Andrew. Didn’t like her father. The two had great chemistry and hated when the story ended. I will keep an eye out for more books from the author. I loved the story.
This is a short story that plays on the deception of two people. One is afraid she will run if she knows who he is. The other is being pushed to steal back her fathers jewels. The plot is rather good, unfortunately the climax fell just a little short.
I received this book for free and this is my honest opinion.
A young lady who has been kept from society is forced by her father an Earl, to go to a ball to meet a Duke who has won a family heirloom necklace from him. The Earl feels it was stolen by cheating and wants her to get it back. Instead without knowing it she meets his brother.
A truly lovely clean historical romance before women ever had any rights and were pretty much treated as possessions --- with a drunken, gambling father Arabella is told and threatened that she much steal a family heirloom her father had lost.but true love follows making for a happy fairy tale ending!
I really enjoyed this Book. The Story & Characters were well written. What starts out with deception on from both the H & h starts spiraling. I love reading books by Ellie St Claire, she knows how to capture your attention and hold it throughout her Stories. I am looking forward to reading more books by Ellie.
Very good book that I did not want to put down it is a coffee break, or read at bed type of story of only 62 pages . This is Andrew Stephens, and Arabella Marley's story and neither are who they pretend to be.I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
What a lovely romance story. The Duke send his scandalous brother away and replaces him at a mascarade ball. Of course he meets a beautiful woman who believes he is his brother. Never wanted the story to end. Received a free book.
A nice story that did not drag out with misunderstandings as some stories do. Young women with little or no options for standing up to abusers must have had a difficult life in Recency times.
Wow. A double-deception certainly spices up this beautifully written Regency Romance. I loved Arabella and Andrew’s story. It was well-plotted, well-written and had great lead and supporting characters. What more could one ask for? Definitely recommended.
I really thought this was a sweet little romance! poor Arabella having to put up with such an abusive father! I'm glad she met Andrew! the Duke was a real piece of work too!
Unmasking a Duke by Ellie St. Clair is a short Regency love story full of deceit and betrayal and a true love that blooms as the truth is revealed. My free opinion. Thanks.
This is a sweet story about love. The abusive father received his just rewards of nothing. The irresponsible older brother to pay for his thouhgtlessness.
